Jacob
Buying in bulk is pretty awesome, it really cuts down on trips to the store. While you're here, you might as well get it, right? This place made leaving the rez to get groceries totally worth it.
Ten pound bag of chicken nuggets? Hell yeah, we'll eat it!
Five pound bag of curly fries? Sure, why not!
I pulled my phone out when I was in the dairy aisle, just to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I smiled at my phones wallpaper, a close up of Ness with a goofy grin. I loved having her in my pocket when she wasn't with me, as rare as that was.
My phone didn't show any new calls, no new messages. Satisfied that nobody was trying to reach me, I shoved my phone back in my pocket, and finished the shopping.
When I passed the floral section, I couldn't resist getting some for my lovely ladies. I got Ness some white roses, and Swan some of the same after some thought. For the twins, I got some tinted daises that were all kinds of crazy colors, they'd love them. Asa would probably want some too, so that he could stick them in the ground and try to get them to take root. Not wanting A.J. to feel left out, anything would set him off these days, I got him some too.
While my items were being scanned, I checked my phone again.
Holy shit, eight missed calls?
Apparently, I'd had some reception issues when I was deep inside the store. Now that I was in the front of it by all these huge windows, it was back. I'd forgotten that this massive store is a total pit when it comes to phone reception.
I'd missed two calls from Swan's phone, three from Nessie's, and three from our house phone.
If you get eight missed calls from the same two people, chances are they are not calling just to say hi.
I was as apologetic as I could be to the young cashier when I told her that I'd have to leave and come back for this stuff another time.
In the parking lot, I took long strides past my car. I'd be able to get home faster phased. After thinking about it for a second, I knew I'd be able to stick to the woods and not have to cross any roads. I didn't waste time checking voice mails. I was pretty sure I already knew what was going on. I called Ness and started running toward the house.
She didn't even say hello when she picked up, I could hear Swan crying.
"Ness? Sweetie, I'm so sorry. I didn't have any reception."
"Oh my God, Jake. He phased in the kitchen and then ran off. I don't know where he is, you have to phase and get him to come back,. I couldn't catch him!" she cried.
"I will, are you guys okay there?"
"We're fine, don't worry about us. I hear howling so I think somebody is with him. Please Jake, just find him," she begged.
"Okay, okay. He'll be fine. I'm phasing right now. I'll be home as soon as I can."
After tying my shorts around my legs I phased so quickly that it sort of hurt.
Dad? came Anthony's shaken voice in my head.
It's me, where are you?
I don't even know.
I heard Seth's voice next.
I'll phase back now, any thing you want me to do?
Yeah, actually. Would you go by my house and stay with Ness til I get back?
You got it.
Then Seth was gone.
Is Swan okay? Anthony asked. What about Mom?
Yeah, she's just worried about you. Head home, buddy.
I don't know which way!
Yes, you do. Just use your nose.
He spent a minute looking around and sniffing. I could tell where he was, he'd gotten awful far from the house. When he turned south, I knew he was going the right way.
As we both trotted along, toward each other and home, I saw little flashes of what had happened before he left. Him screaming at Swan, and then running through the sliding glass door, breaking it. Ness hadn't mentioned that in our short conversation.
I'm sorry, Dad, he told me.
It's not your fault. Plenty of us have broken stuff, especially that first time. Trust me, just ask your Uncle. It's only a door. No big deal. The important thing is that nobody got hurt.
I really hope not.
You're mom would have told me, they're fine.
As was we ran home, I saw the details in flashes. It looked like he really scared Swan, and he felt awful about it.
She'll forgive you. She may act like a drama queen, but you know how she is, she'll get over it ,I joked.
You can kind of feel it when another wolf smiles. I felt his heart lighten for a second.
He then started thinking about the fact that he knew he was going to phase soon, but this was still a crazy experience. He likes to be prepared, and I tried my best to help him, but you can't ever be totally prepared for this.
This is kinda weird, he said.
Yeah, it really is. I know it feels like you'll never get used to it, but you will. It's your second nature.
I thought about teaching him how to phase back once we get home, and Ness sees that he's fine.
Is it hard? he asked.
Sometimes at first, I answered honestly. You're pretty smart though, buddy. You'll get it in no time.
Renesmee
After talking to Jake, I was relieved. I was calmer, and more able to console Swan. She was convinced it was all her fault. She may have inadvertently cause him to phase, but it certainly was not her fault. Teenage werewolves were as quick to anger as rabid dogs.
"It was just a matter of time, Swan. It could have been anything. Somebody, or something, was going to set him off for some silly reason."
"But it was me," she insisted.
"You aren't to blame here, sweetie. Not that I don't want you here, but maybe you'd like to go see Caroline?"
Swan and Caroline still managed to have plenty in common, despite their age difference. They both still liked to dance, and I don't see Swan ever growing out of loving Disney movies.
"Yeah," she said, pulling away from my embrace and wiping her eyes. "I think I will."
"Go ahead. I'll call Aunt Rachel and tell her you are coming," I said, and kissed her forehead.
Once she was gone, I started cleaning up the broken glass, and called Rachel using speaker phone.
"Hey, Swan is on her way over," I said.
"Okay, awesome," she said. "We're balls deep in Play Dough over here."
Balls deep? Who says stuff like that, about Play Dough? What a nut.
"Christopher! If I see that Play Dough going near your mouth again, you are done. Done!" she threatened. "The blue kind, he only tries to eat the blue kind," she said, befuddled by his selective eating.
"Nice. Well... we've had a very interesting afternoon. To put it mildly," I said.
"Uh oh. That doesn't sound good, what happened?"
"Anthony just phased, and Swan had a front row seat," I said dryly.
"Holy shit!"
I went through the whole story with Rachel. By the time I'd reached the end of it, I'd cleaned up the glass, and artfully covered up the hole that A.J. had made in my counter, with a bowl of fake fruit. At least it was on the end, and it wouldn't be in the way until we fixed it.
"So, I'm just standing in the middle of the woods screaming like a crazy person. There was nothing I could do, but when I heard a second wolf I knew at least somebody was with him."
"Could you tell who it was?" she asked.
"I think it sounded like Seth."
"I bet you're right, he does live closest to you guys."
"Exactly," I agreed. "Jake finally called me back, he said he was gonna phase so he's with Anthony now. Not 'with him,' but you know what I mean."
As we talked, I stood in front of where the sliding glass door used to be, watching the woods. A few minutes after Rachel said Swan had arrived at her place, I saw Seth coming through the trees.
"Rach, Seth is here. I'll call you before I go to bed."
Once I'd hung up with her, I went outside to meet Seth, and asked if that had been him that I heard howling.
"Yeah, I could hear you and Anthony both, so I was calling for Jake."
"What happened?" I wanted to know.
"Nobody else was phased at the time, so that was good. I only phased when I heard you guys. He was a little freaked out."
"Why did he run off like that?"
He shrugged, "I dunno. I couldn't tell, but Jake is with him now."
After Seth caught me up on what he knew, which sadly wasn't a whole lot, I went and got some shorts for Anthony and Jake, and set them around the side of the house. I sat in the courtyard to wait for my wolves, trying to absorb that I had two now.
When I saw them trotting towards the edge of the trees, I jumped up. When Anthony's eyes met mine, he sat down and bowed his huge head, either in shame, or apology. It caused a lump in my throat.
"Oh, baby," I said. "Come over here and see me."
He approached slowly, and leaned down to put his face near mine. I held it in my hands and gently stroked his fur. "Nothing that happened today was your fault," I told him. Since I was touching him, he saw my thoughts, I needed him to know I really meant it. His eyes looked guiltily at where the door used to be.
"No," I told him firmly. "I don't care about that, all I care about is you," I murmured. I scratched him behind his ears. He was so shaggy, I'd have to give him a hair cut. As much as I disliked the thought of chopping off his beautiful hair, he'd be so much more comfortable, and able to see better.
Jake barked at him then, time to get to work trying to phase back, I guessed. This might take a while.
I stroked Anthony's muzzle and said, "I put some shorts around the side of the house for you."
I released him, then went to Jake. I pulled his face down to kiss his nose.
"Have fun boys."
I headed into the house to write a quick e-mail to Mom. I typed out the same story I'd told Rachel, and told her that I'd have just called, but I didn't want Anthony to hear me talking about him. She wrote back right away, and made a great point. Now that it's over, I won't have to stress about when it's going to happen anymore. I wrote back agreeing with her, and told her it was time to go feed the wolves.
Now, to see if I can scrape up some comfort food.
Anthony
It was harder then I thought it would be to get back into human form. Dad showed me again and again. I could feel what it felt like to him, to change back and forth. I felt like it should be happening, I understood what it felt like, but it wasn't working. I was getting pissed off.
If you don't calm down it won't happen. Why don't you take a break for a minute and go play with Pizza. They've been watching you over there.
Pizza, Takoda, and Ophelia sure did look curious about what we were doing over here. I walked over to them, and got on my stomach, down to their level.
Yup, it's just me, I thought. I wished they could hear me, that would be cool. It would be fun to really play with them as a wolf, but maybe next time. I just wanted to rest. Once the wolves were satisfied with my identity, they curled up nest to me and joined me in my break.
I was so relieved I hadn't hurt Swan or Mom. I had to get out of there before I accidentally hurt somebody, so I ran hoping that I hadn't already done so. I'd just nearly ripped Swan's throat out, over nothing. I didn't have any certain place in mind when I took off. I had to get away from them. I just ran, and ran, and ran...
Come on, buddy. Don't dwell on stuff. Why don't we get back to work.
I looked up, and Dad was standing in front of me.
You know if you don't change back, Mom will probably make you sleep outside tonight, he teased.
I barked a laugh.
So I tried, and tried again. I could smell dinner cooking inside, it was only then that I realized I was starving. I must say, it was a good incentive.
When I finally got it right, I knew it. I knew it for sure. I blinked and I was back on two legs. I took a minute to get my bearings, and get used to it again.
Dad barked happily, and ran around the side of the house.
Oh, yeah. Clothes. I need some of those.
I jogged over, watching the windows to make sure nobody was looking out. I was glad to not be seen streaking through the yard...this time.
Dad was used to this, by the time I reached him he was already dressed in a pair of shorts again.
"Wow, you're good," I commented as I pulled on my own shorts.
"It's all about practice, you'll see. You did great, you managed to phase back quicker than I did that first time!"
When we went inside, I wasn't surprised to see that Swan was nowhere to be found..
Mom wrapped her arms around me without hesitation when I came inside. Man, she is short!
"How are you feeling?" she asked, taking both of my hands in hers.
"Just worn out. Hungry."
"Well, that can be easily taken care of," she said cheerfully.
"I'm really glad you're okay, Mom."
She looked up at me with that gentle smile.
"Where's Swan?" I asked.
"She went to go hang out with Caroline."
I just nodded, letting myself think it was a random visit, and it wasn't because of me.
My other sisters had come home, they looked me up and down pretty good.
"Hey," they said cautiously, and in tandem.
"Hi. At ease, girls. I'm fine," I said, and went to lay on the couch and watch TV until dinner was ready. It didn't escape my notice that I remained in there alone. I supposed I'd just have have to accept that I might be kind of a pariah for a little longer. I knew I had a lot of work to do on myself, and some apologies to hand out, too.
With the TV's volume low, I let myself fall half asleep while waiting for dinner. It felt great to just drift off.
Mom made juicy, flavorful BBQ cheeseburgers with onion rings on top, plus nice and gooey bacon mac and cheese. It really hit the spot. I tried to savor it, but I just couldn't help ignoring everybody around the table and scarfing it down.
Swan remained noticeably absent.
I headed right to bed after dinner, and kissing Mom goodnight.
"I love you, A.J."
She hugged me a little longer than normal.
I was beyond exhausted, but my mind was still spinning. The laws of the pack floated around in my head. Like how anything you hear in a brother's head, you keep to yourself. They aren't your thoughts, so you don't have the right to say them out loud. That's their choice to make.
It's all about keeping calm, and learning to control my body.
I slept for a couple of hours, then my eyes popped open when I heard the front door close downstairs. Swan was home. I kept thinking about the fear in her eyes when I had her cornered in the kitchen, until I forced my sore muscles to carry me across the house to her room.
I knocked on her door as softly as I could.
"Can I come in?"
She didn't answer right away.
"Fine, but keep your distance."
So I entered the land of pink, glittery, fuzzy stuff. I leaned against the wall next to her door.
She was sitting cross legged on her floor. She took off her headphones and looked at me expectantly.
"I'm sorry for scaring you," I said. "That's why I left you know, so that I wouldn't hurt you. I'd never, ever hurt you."
She shrugged, and looked down. "Not on purpose, anyway. Whatever."
"Okay. Well...sorry, again," I said, after a long, awkward silence, and turned to leave.
"That wasn't the worst of it," she said, making me stop and turn around. "You said some really awful stuff to me," she said, her eyes filling with tears. "I was gonna put your books back, you know."
"I know. I'm sorry, Swan. Everything about my whole body was out of control. You know if I was myself I wouldn't have said those things."
"Maybe I am a little selfish sometimes, but nobody is perfect. You sure as hell aren't. I'm not some terrible person just because I looked at your books," she said bitterly.
"I know. I really am sorry...did you find out when the meteor shower is?"
"Yeah," she said, still not meeting my eyes.
"Can I watch with you?"
"I guess, if you want. Mom said she wants to watch, too."
So all seven of us, eight with Seth there, sat on the grass in the backyard and watched the sky as it looked like it was raining stars. Swan sat as far away from me as she could, without looking like that was what she was trying to do. This was a start thought, she'll forgive me sooner or later. Right now, I'm leaning towards later.
Mom sat next to me, and rested her head on my bicep. "Are you too old to cuddle with your mom?" she said, looking up at me with a grin.
I snorted a laugh. "Probably," I said, and wrapped my arm around her shoulders anyway.
I should try to earn some money to pay for the things I broke today.
I couldn't believe she wasn't afraid of me, not even now, when I was afraid of myself. I knew she loved me just as much as the day I'd been born. I felt it through her gift She wasn't afraid of me, just afraid for me. I felt that from her again, when she patted my hand before walking inside, once the meteor shower seemed to be done for the night.
"Goodnight again A.J., I love you."
"Night, Mom. Love you, too."
"We are gonna leave our door open in case you need anything, okay?" she said.
Woah, that never happens. "Okay."
"Night, buddy," Dad said, giving me a pat on the back before turning to follow Mom inside.
"Dad? Wait, I have a question."
"What's up?"
"What if I'm angry in a dream or something. It's not possible to phase when your sleeping, is it?"
He shook his head no, "You'd be the first."
Good.
A/N: Oh, Anthony lol. I wouldn't worry too much about him and Swan :)
