The Denali clan spent the day getting to know Renesmee. It wasn’t long before the child had them under her charm as well; everyone except Eleazar. He paced back and forth in front of the window trying to figure out why the Volturi would come themselves instead of just sending guards. “It doesn’t make any sense,” he growled. “Have I truly been that blind?”
“Don’t make yourself crazy over this,” Carmen tried to comfort him.
He sighed and sat down in an armchair. “There must be some sort of pattern. Aro doesn’t often leave Volterra. He’s only ever left when—”
“When what?” Bella demanded.
“When he wants something,” Edward answered. “I wonder if that’s why Alice left. He wants her badly.”
All eyes turned toward the sound of a deep laugh. In the kitchen doorway stood a tall, well-dressed man with flowing raven hair. “So, you’ve finally figured out my eldest brother.”
“Lucian, it’s good to see you again,” Eleazar nodded.
“And you.” The ancient returned the greeting. “Now, where is this child?”
Renesmee tried to hide in Carmen’s arms. Edward looked to Liam, who was right behind Lucian. “She’s right here.”
“Excellent.” Lucian smiled and moved to where Carmen was sitting with Renesmee in her lap. He knelt down by the chair, looking Renesmee over like she was some artifact. “How interesting . . . .”
“It’s just as I told you,” Liam said, kneeling beside him. He reached out to stroke Renesmee’s chin. “It’s all right, sweetheart,” he cooed. “This is my friend Lucian. I know he looks a little scary, but he won’t hurt you.”
“Show him what you showed Carmen,” Edward encouraged.
“Not necessary.” Lucian rose to his feet. “I’d rather see for myself.” He closed his eyes and stood still for a moment.
“Are you going to help us or not?” Bella snapped.
Lucian turned and glared at her. “You’re lucky I’ve learned to be patient, young one. I’m here as an impartial observer. I’ve agreed to study the child and relay my observations to my brothers; no more, no less.”
“But do you think Aro has an ulterior motive?” Edward asked.
Lucian snorted. “Of course he does. Eleazar has it about right. He wants something.”
“But what?” Bella asked.
“My guess would be you.”
“Me?” Bella was practically in shock. “What on earth would he want with me?”
“It makes sense.” Eleazar nodded in agreement. “She’s a shield.”
“A what?” Bella raised an eyebrow. “You mean there’s a term for what I can do?”
Lucian turned to study her for a moment. “You shield yourself from others, apparently without even realizing it. I almost feel sorry for you, Edward. That was an awkward courtship.”
Bella furrowed her brow. “How would you know?”
“He’s a lot like Alice,” Liam explained. “He can see the future and the past. That’s probably why Aro wants Alice so badly; he misses having a walking crystal ball.”
Lucian chuckled. “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. Anyhow, I hope Carlisle can find at least a few allies for your cause. You’re going to need them.”
Confusion flashed across Bella’s features. “But I thought they’d listen to you.”
“I’m going to give my impartial opinion, but if Aro wants something, I doubt my opinion will matter much.”
“But you’ll still help?”
Lucian’s gaze flitted over to Liam. “I’ll do what I can.”
“Liam!” Jacob’s panicked cry came from upstairs.
Liam rushed to his side, finding his pregnant mate curled up under the blankets on the bed, shivering. “What’s wrong?”
“I . . . I’m fr-freezing!” Jacob answered through chattering teeth. “I . . . I’m n-never cold!”
Liam put his hand on Jacob’s shoulder to try and comfort him. “Don’t panic, love. Carlisle said your body might do some strange things. Are you in any pain?”
Jacob shook his head. “Just c-cold.”
Liam pulled the blankets down and put his ear to his mate’s belly. “His heartbeat is a little fast, but that might be because of your distress.” He tucked Jacob back in and pressed his lips to the werewolf’s forehead. “Well, you’re not running a fever. You feel about normal for a human.”
“What?” Jacob’s eyes went wide.
“Deep breaths. Maybe Little Spike was hot. Hold on, let me check your healing.” Liam scratched Jacob’s arm with his fingernail deeply enough to bleed. A tiny bead of blood pooled to the surface. He wiped it away and watched the tiny mark closely until it disappeared about three minutes later. “That’s still fine. Maybe now would be a good time to find out if the furnace works.”
As Liam headed back downstairs, another car pulled into the driveway. It was Peter and Charlotte. Alice and Jasper had tracked them down and sent them after all. They took the whole situation much better than the Denali clan, and also promised to be witnesses.
As the days passed, a slow trickle of vampires arrived. The treaty with the werewolves had been explained to all of them, and they seemed to take to it well. Jacob stayed out of sight for the most part. He would have stayed at the cottage but it didn’t have an electric furnace, and his drop in body temperature apparently wasn’t a temporary thing.
Something else that bothered him was that their visitors decided to simply hunt out of state rather than become vegetarians for a short time. He knew it was probably driving Sam nuts, because they were staying well away from pack territory. Jacob consoled himself by telling himself this was to protect his mate and unborn child.
The Cullens managed to assemble quite a group of allies. They had clans from Ireland and Egypt, and Alice had found the Amazons. Three more nomads had joined them as well. It made for a crowded house, but no one seemed to mind.
The family returned after a little over a week. Carlisle examined Jacob right away and found that the baby was absolutely fine. Liam had been telling him that all week, but coming from Carlisle it made Jacob relax a little.
At Lucian’s suggestion, Kate was trying to help Bella extend her shield to protect others. She used her gift of being able to shock others on Edward. As much as Bella hated seeing him in pain, it was agreed that a little motivation would help her learn faster.
The others gathered around to watch, rather fascinated with her rare talent. One afternoon Liam whispered very quietly into Kate’s ear before sending Renesmee to climb into her mommy’s lap. Bella took one look at Kate and snarled. “No! Don’t you dare.”
Kate didn’t back down, even when Bella crouched, ready for the attack. Bella never even noticed Liam right behind her ready to snatch her. Kate was only a few inches away when she stopped and turned to Edward. “Could you hear her?”
“No.” Edward shook his head. “Nothing. But you might want to let Bella calm down before continuing.”
Bella suddenly noticed Liam’s presence and turned on him. “You!”
Liam stayed calm and relaxed. “Harnessed rage is a powerful weapon.” He smirked in Lucian’s direction. “I would know.”
“You made me think she was going to hurt my daughter!” Bella shouted.
“And apparently it was just the motivation you needed. Renesmee was never in harm’s way. What kind of monster do you think I am?”
“One who would use a child like that. You’re going to be a father, you should know better.”
“It’s all right, Bella.” Edward pulled her into a tight embrace. “I was in on it, and so was Renesmee. It was a dirty trick, but at least it worked.”
“And hopefully you’ll remember what you learned,” Liam added. “As for your little comment about me becoming a father, I do indeed have a pregnant mate who might need a shield.”
Bella huffed and shook her head. Liam’s motivation was to protect Jacob and Carlisle, and he’d go to any lengths he deemed necessary. She had a similar incentive when it came to Renesmee. “Point taken,” she mumbled. “Alright, let’s try again.”
Carlisle had told Jacob he needed to relax; his blood pressure was up, and that wasn’t good for the baby. The thing was, relaxing was easier said than done. He was a defenseless pregnant werewolf surrounded by vampires. It didn’t help that his body was doing all sorts of strange things. If his body temperature could go down like that, maybe he would lose his healing ability. Maybe the baby really would end up killing him.
He stepped out of the shower and wrapped himself in a towel. The warm water hadn’t helped much because his mind wouldn’t stop racing. He opened the door and blinked when he saw Liam waiting for him on the bed. The bedroom was dimly lit by two taper candles on the dresser, and jasmine-scented smoke rose from the incense burner on the nightstand. “What’s all this?”
“I’m doing my fatherly duties,” Liam answered and motioned for Jacob to join him.
Jacob shook his head. “We can’t, remember? It’s too risky.”
“Just get your ass over here and trust me a little. Carlisle said the only thing bothering our son is your distress.”
Jacob let the towel drop to the floor and headed over to the bed. Liam directed him to lie on his back and picked up a bottle of oil. Jacob watched as Liam straddled his hips and leaned down to place a cool kiss on his belly. Liam trailed up his chest to the base of his throat, causing Jacob to let out a soft moan as a shiver ran down his spine.
Liam sat up again and poured a little of the oil into his hands and rubbed them together. Then he touched Jacob’s chest, kneading the muscles with just the right amount of force. Jacob gasped when the oil became warm to the touch, the heat spreading through his whole body.
Liam worked up Jacob’s shoulders and down his arms. Jacob closed his eyes and felt his body relax for the first time in days. “You’re too good to me,” he mumbled.
Liam chuckled and flashed an evil smirk. “You haven’t seen anything yet.”
When he finished with Jacob’s hands, Liam repositioned himself to massage Jacob’s feet and moved up his legs. Jacob’s eyes flew open when he felt a warm touch on his cock. “No—we can’t!”
Liam rolled his eyes. “We can’t do anything involving penetration. Relax and enjoy this.”
Jacob bit his lip and arched his back when more warm oil was dripped onto his thickening member. Liam’s hands slid up and down in a torturously slow circular motion, occasionally flicking his thumb over the head. Jacob’s mouth opened in a silent scream as he jerked his hips up off the bed. “Oh god, more!” he gasped.
“That’s the spirit.” Liam grinned and leaned forward to take the head in his mouth, his lips sliding across the edges. Jacob inhaled sharply and dug his fingernails into the bed when he felt Liam’s tongue swirl around the tip. He tried to push himself in further, but Liam easily held him down with one hand.
It had been so long, and between Liam’s tongue and hand, Jacob didn’t think he would last long. He felt his body tighten up, and he let out a cry of frustration when his mate pulled away. “Liam, what the—”
Liam pressed a finger to Jacob’s lips to quiet him. “Patience will make this all the sweeter.”
Liam waited a moment before sliding the werewolf’s entire cock down his throat, milking the invader as he pulled back. Jacob hissed and swallowed hard, heat radiating from his flushed skin. “Ah! You—” His words were cut off by the tip of Liam’s talented tongue probing his piss slit.
Jacob started tossing his head from side to side, his breath coming in short, uneven gasps. Liam continued the delicious torture for nearly an hour, gleefully watching his mate writhe in pleasure and need.
Jacob felt his body tense for the fourth time, throwing his head back and crying out as intense pleasure jolted through his body like lightning. His vision blurred and he could barely breathe for a moment. Liam grinned as the last spurt of white goo squirted out of Jacob’s cock and dripped down his hand.
“That . . .” Jacob panted, at a loss for words. His heart returned to his chest and his body melted into the bed. He tried to say something more, but sleep claimed him before he could.
“Sleep well, my love,” Liam whispered, leaning in to kiss Jacob’s forehead before getting up to wash off.
