Caitlin awoke to another rude assault as she was poked hard in the soft part of her side with a stick. She groaned and sat up, finding Peter Pan standing over her. Cat closed her eyes and shook her head, still suffering from a dry mouth and a headache. “You are very rude child you know that?” Peter smirked looking down at her.
“Lady, before when we brought you here it was a game, but now it’s serious. There is someone on Hook’s ship that we need to find and you need to tell us where she’s at.” Caitlin rubbed her eyes and shook her head.
“I’m the only female aboard the Jolly Roger. So apparently who ever it is you’re looking for is not there. If that’s all you wanted to know from me, then I would like to go home, I’m sure my husband is very upset that I’m gone again.” Peter drew his sword and held the point of it to her chin.
“Not until you tell us everything you know about the evil fairy whose using black magic.” Caitlin shook her head and closed her eyes again feeling very tired.
“Boy there is no such thing as . . . .” Peter flew down to her and covered her mouth with his hand to keep her from saying those words that would drop yet another fairy to her doom.
“Don’t ever say that. Every time someone says that a fairy somewhere falls down dead.” Caitlin rolled her eyes and sighed as Peter took his hand away from her mouth looking at her. “She has to be aboard that ship, she’s no where else in Neverland and I’m going to find her.”
“Then find her, but let me go. Play your little game of hide and seek and let me go home to the man you continually abuse with your little adventures you little monster.” Peter frowned and glared at her pressing his sword to her throat again.
“You’re my prisoner lady, you have to do as I say or I’ll have to KILL you. Now tell me where that fairy is at!” Caitlin was getting annoyed, she didn’t feel well and she was still quite a bit disorientated.
“LOOK, I don’t know what it is that makes you suffer from such huge delusions of grandeur with thinking you’re a hero and a savoir to all when all you are is a juvenile delinquent that should be behind bars somewhere! They told me how the pirate ship came to be in this place, and how you brought them here and trapped them for your own amusement! I don’t fully understand everything that goes on around here, but one thing I do know . . . is THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FAIRIES SO THERE CAN’T BE ONE ABOARD THE SHIP!” Peter looked shocked at outrage that she said those words after he told her not to. He doubled up his fist and punched her as hard as he could in the face. Caitlin fell back and onto her side covering her eye as her head spun and her headache nearly tripled then everything once again went black.
Back aboard the Jolly Rodger, Hook sat at Caitlin’s vanity in her closet looking into the mirror. He wondered quietly how many times she had sat here and made herself look beautiful each time she rose from her slumber, or even when she was ready to lay down to sleep beside him at night. Hook’s eyes shifted down as he saw her brush still in the same place she had left it, and picked it up slowly turning it over. There where a few strands of her golden strawberry hair left, remembering how her curls always fell about her face only making her that much more pleasing to the eye. James sat it down just as it had been before and looked back into the mirror.
It was late after dark and Smee carefully entered the cabin, once again putting himself in harms way to look after the Captain. Looking around he saw a candle lit in his late wife’s closet and walked slowly towards it, finding James sitting motionless once more. He stood at the door for several moments, seeing that the Captain still hadn’t changed his shirt after the events earlier in the day, and the stench of blood was extremely overwhelming. Hook’s eyes had dark black circles around him as he looked exhausted.
“Capt’n.” Smee said quietly before stepping towards him inside the closet. “Capt’n it’s late. Let me help ye get into bed.” James turned his head slightly towards Smee even though he never looked up at him. Smee walked in and helped the Captain to his feet, as he still seemed to be in a sort of trance born of his deep grief for his lost love. His first mate led him out and sat him down, removing his bloodied shirt, putting it aside. “I’ll see that’s washed out and mended for ye Capt’n.” Smee said trying to make conversation, but Hook just stayed silent. In all honesty, it was easier to care for him this way. If he was feeling 100% it would be much harder to get him cleaned up for he would fight Smee and send him away as he had done ever since he had returned to Neverland.
The first mate gave a sigh and removed James’ hook, and then the harness, which held it in place. The blood had soaked through and still coated his skin, which added to the smell of his not having bathed since he had lost Caitlin. Smee took this opportunity, figuring that after he got the Captain to sleep he would wake up in a rotten mood again and there would be no approaching him. Getting him undressed he bathed him from head toe at least twice, as he had done long ago, since he doubled as first mate and Hook’s man servant. Smee also gave him a shave and made sure his mustache and beard were trimmed. Still James seemed to not notice and made no acknowledgement of him the entire time.
Pulling his long curly and now clean hair back, Smee put it in a tie to keep it out of the Captain’s way. Once the Captain was tucked away safely in bed, Smee blew out every light except the candle he carried with him to sleep. “Good night Capt’n. Try to get some rest.” Smee closed the door taking the last bit of light with him leaving James alone in his bed.
Smee made his way below decks, heading for his own quarters when he heard some chatter going on between some of the crewmembers in the galley. “Do ye have any idea what that old codfish fed us tonight? I tell ye he’s finally gone off his rocker, he’s plum mad!”
“Aye, true enough. But ye have to admit; even knowin’ what it was we were eatin’ it was the best fish ye ever tasted. If ye hadn’t known what it was ye wouldn’t be complainin’” It went silent for a moment, as it seemed everyone in the small circle agreed.
“What do ye suppose he cut ‘er up for? If it was just for a meal, why did he take so long to kill ‘er.”
“Because you twit, that one and the rest of ‘em took his woman away. Or weren’t you on deck the night it happened.”
“I heard he was cuttin’ ‘er up to find the wedding ring he gave that bangtail. Ye think they ate ‘er hand whole without even botherin’ to take off that ring? Bet the one who got the fingers nearly broke ‘er teeth on that rock.” There was laughter shared by the men finding this extremely amusing. Smee shook his head and walked into the galley looking around at the small group. The laughter instantly stopped as all their eyes instantly went down cast.
“Ye are all playin’ with fire, and ye know it.” Smee said.
“Oh come on Smee. She’s dead, we’re just havin’ a bit of fun, that’s all. Why we been cursed ever since the day she set foot on the deck.” One spoke up and said.
“Yer gonna think it’s fun when the Capt’n guts ye and orders yer eyes boiled for soup ain’t ye.” All the men looked around at each other before looking down again knowing Smee was right. “No more talk like that, anywhere on this here ship. No callin’ ‘er a bangtail, the Capt’n would rip yer tongue out if he heard you callin’ her a whore. Ye all should be more respectful of the dead and ye KNOW it.” He looked at all of them very seriously for they seemed oblivious to the situation at hand. “We have not seen the worst of this yet. As he gets stronger, so does his rage. Don’t give him cause to take out his grief on ye.” They all looked at each other before looking back at Smee, “All of ye get back to yer beds. Ye heard the Capt’n; we are to catch another mermaid in the mornin’.” The men silently dispersed, retiring for the night as Smee shook his head returning to his own quarters.
Aurora sat on James desk watching him lay in the bed. She had given him dust that healed his body’s wounds but now he seemed even more distraught than before. A madness having fallen over him that even frightened her. She wondered what it was he had dreamed that made him react in such a way, but some how knew that human was part of it. Why couldn’t he look at her? Why couldn’t he find company and companionship in her? She was here and more then willing to grant his every wish. She gave a sigh continuing to watch him sleep.
Caitlin had woken again and sat next to the earthen wall silently. It seemed that the only two ways in and out of this place was that walkway a large stone was blocking, and the homemade bars that kept her incarcerated. She couldn’t even get close to inspect them for every time she tried she got jabbed with a stick. Cat was getting quite a few black and blue bruises across her shoulders and chest, and had a large black eye where her captor had belted her with his fist. Closing her eyes a moment feeling her head continuing to pound she tried to think about how she could escape should she find a chance.
She paused, hearing a small tap and she opened her eyes. Another tap came and she looked up towards the bars to see Danny’s small bright-eyed face looking down at her. Caitlin stood and walked over to the window looking up at him. He frowned and his little lip quivered seeing how horrible she looked with the bruises she was forming on her skin from her extremely rough treatment. Caitlin sighed a little, “It’s alright Danny. I know this isn’t your doing. Don’t look so upset, I’m tougher than you think.” He nodded a little before looking around and threw her a small bundle wrapped in a handkerchief. Caitlin caught it and opened it curiously. She found three large green granny smith apples, and looked up at Danny. “Will you get in trouble if you’re found out?” Danny just shrugged as if to say he didn’t care.
Caitlin looked at the apples again and smiled softly, “Thank you Danny.” He smiled at her and stood up hurrying off. Cat walked back and sat down next to the wall, taking out one of the large apples and hungrily devouring it. It was juicy and sweet and her mouth had been so dry. Digging a small hole in the ground with her hands, she buried the apple core and hid the other two apples in case her cell was searched.
Already she was feeling a bit better and looking around again, trying to think about what she had to do to get out. Not remembering her past of course, she had taken a few classes on critical thinking and it only took a little bit of research and the need to get out of this sort of situation. Caitlin paused a moment sitting up straighter against the wall, an idea springing into her mind.
Back on the ship, the Captain had risen from his bed and sat on the window ledge watching the sunrise in silence. The dream he had had still haunted him, and her words seemed to echo in his ears, “Find me.” Hook wondered if it was her restless spirit, wanting to be laid to rest properly and not just lost into the dark abyss of the sea. The thought had tried to creep into his mind, but he did not dare trust a bit of hope to her still being alive. For some reason her wedding ring seemed to be the key element he could think of to find her. The diamonds that were encrusted in the band and the band itself would not be easily destroyed.
A knock came at the door, but he continued to stare through the stain blue glass windows, “Come.” He said, not even turning to see who it was.
“Good Mornin’ Capt’n. Did ye sleep well?” James gave a sigh as he reached up and hooked his iron appendage in the latch of the window, unlocking the first one and then moving to the second.
“You are a moron Smee and you are lucky if you possess even half a brain, and that is being generous. Why do you ask me such foolish questions?” Hook pushed the window open letting the sea air fill the cabin as a cool and gentle breeze moved over the water. “Has another been captured and properly bound yet.”
Smee had hoped that this stage of the Captains madness would have passed by morning, but it was obvious that it had not. “No Captain, it’s still early yet, and they are hard creatures to catch. Not as dull witted as fish that swim into the net.” James continued to stare out the window in silence for a few more moments. Smee moved cautiously around to where he could see James’ face. “Captain, what is it yer lookin’ for? Do ye think there’s somethin’ one of them is carryin’ around in their belly?”
“I shall find it. I found quite a number of pearls in the one that was questioned yesterday. As I am certain you noticed when you removed her carcass and cleaned the deck.” The entire course of this conversation, the Captain’s eyes remained outside towards the horizon where the water and the clouds met. “Either way, they will suffer as she suffered. I shall continue to search one creature a day until I find what it is I search for, or until every last one of them is exterminated.” His last words where spat through his clenched teeth pushed out by the anger and rage that was turned towards the mermaids for now.
There was no reasoning with him at the moment, nothing else to do until his rampage burned itself out, and Smee thought it best not to turn his reckless wrath towards himself. “Aye Capt’n. I’ll tell ye when we catch another.” He said solemnly.
“See that you do.” Hook commanded. Smee gave a nod and quickly exited the cabin. A thought crept through James mind amidst his memories of Caitlin as his eyes narrowed in wonderment. “I have not heard that tick of doom since we returned. Perhaps that ghastly creature perished in one of the harsh winters that overtakes us.” It was a thought that sprung up out of nowhere, and he shook his head sinking back into his memories of Caitlin.
Caitlin stood up and walked to the bars that kept her locked inside her prison looking out seeing her guards standing on either side of the window holding their long sticks at their sides. She sat down on her blanket waiting, having been keeping track of their shift changes since early morning. Finally, what she had been waiting for arrived. “I’m starving, it’s well past lunch time. I’m going to go get something for us to eat, be back in a bit.”
“Well hurry up, you know Peter will be angry if he find out you left.” The other lost boy set down his staff and ran off into the distance. Caitlin stood up and walked quietly towards the windows, stepping up on the rock that was just under the window.
“Boy.” She said starling her young captor that she had gotten so close without him hearing. Quickly he jabbed his stick through bars intending to push her away with it as they had done before. However, Cat was ready for him this time and grabbed the staff. Waiting until he got a tighter hold on it trying to pull it away, she jerked it hard slamming the boy against the bars, knocking them lose from the frame they were set in. The boy fell to the ground stunned and fainted falling back as his wind had been knocked out of his chest with the force of his assault.
Cat reached up and tried to pull the bars off the rest of the way but found them still jammed tight, even though there was a small amount of give to them now. Looking around, she looked at the staff she had liberated from her guard. Thinking quickly knowing she had a limited amount of time, she jammed the end of the staff between the frame of the bars and the wall it was set in. Placing her foot hard against the wall, she braced the staff against her knee and pushed down as hard as she could grinding her teeth as the pressure it put on her leg was almost unbearable. Yet a few moments of pain, and all of her strength bearing down on her lever, the frame popped free and fell to the floor. Stepping back she grabbed the staff and pushed it out the window, pulling it against the wall making a sort of handle to pull herself up to the ground by.
She gave a cry as she found her shoulder seemed to be out of joint, and her pulling her full weight up on it only intensified the pain where she could notice it and she could feel the joint give way. Determined to escape before she was discovered, she finally was able to slip out the window onto her back. Letting go of the staff she sat up grasping her shoulder a moment, feeling as if she was about to pass out from the intense stabbing sensation in her shoulder.
The boy who had been unconscious began to stir, catching Cat’s attention. Reaching once again for the staff she had acquired she used it to get to her feet and she began to run in her bare feet, feeling as if she had the hounds of hell themselves where nipping at her heels. However she came to a stop at the end of a long path finding Danny standing there looking up at her. Cat took a few deep breaths and walked towards him, using the staff to kneel down to his level.
“Danny, I don’t know this place. I’m going to be found and taken back.” She whispered to him, about ready to cry herself. Danny’s eyes were tearing up seeing her so upset and frightened. He reached out and wrapped his arms around her neck hugging her tight, wishing there had been something he could do to keep peter from treating her as he had done. Caitlin groaned slightly, the deep cuts in her skin although bloodless were extremely painful but she wrapped her arm back around him holding him tight. After a moment she whispered, “You can’t stay with me. If they find you with me you’ll be in as much trouble as I am. I’ll find a place to hide.” Pulling back enough to look in his eyes she took another breath.
“You must do something for me Danny, please. You know the way to the Jolly Roger; you know where Captain Hook is. Go to him, and bring him back.” The red head looked up into her eyes sadly, as she didn’t seem to want to stay with him. Caitlin felt her heart ache at the look in his eyes. “Please Danny, I want to go home. I cannot make it there, I’m too tired and sore.” He frowned but nodded hugging her again. Cat closed her eyes and held him tightly, “I’ll find a place to hide until you bring him back, in the same cave that you took me to before when you helped me escape. Bring him there as fast as you can.” She whispered again. Suddenly behind them she heard shouting, and what sounded like an alarm of some sort being sounded. Helping Danny to his feet, she looked into his eyes. “Go, now quickly. I’ll not have them see you with me and blame you for this if they catch me.”
The boy nodded and turned on his heels and disappeared into the brush. Caitlin used the staff to get to her feet and started in the opposite direction to where she thought the cave to be. He shoulder was throbbing now, it was almost certain it was dislocated and her fingers where turning cold and getting hard to move. By some stroke of fate, she came upon a small creature she had recognized. The rabbit that kept her company when she was alone in the cave after her first escape from the insane band of lost children. Following him as he hopped away, it wasn’t long before he disappeared into a hole that she recognized as the entrance of the cave. It looked much different then it had when the earth was white with snow and it was now spring.
Peter was talking to a few of his older lost boys in their hide out, “We’ll try to find the fairy first, it’s almost certain that Hook knows where she’s at. We have to find her before she casts more spells on us.” They were interrupted when an out of breath boy burst into the cave.
“Peter! She’s gone! She’s escaped!!!” All of the lead lost boys stood up quickly, Peter jumped up his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. “She broke the bars! And she conked Loopy in the head!” Peter’s jaw clinched as he drew his sword.
“AFTER HER! We have to get her back!” The boys all scattered and flooded the forest surrounding the hide out, taking every path as they shouted drawing their weapons. Peter flew up into the air, searching for her from the air.
The deck of the Jolly Rodger was stained red once again with the blood of yet another victim of their Captain’s madness. Four crewmembers grumbled as they scrubbed the timbers with mops and brushes before it dried and began to smell of death. Smee sat on the supply boxes cleaning the Captain’s hooks he had used to slash and dismember his victim. No one above even imagined that a soaked young boy who had floated towards the ship on a hollow half of a fallen tree, was crawling into one of the windows the cannons were fired out of.
Danny poked his head over one of the large weapons looking around making sure he was alone. Quickly he crawled on his hands and knees heading for the door. Getting to his feet, he poked his head around the doorway looking down both ways of the hall not seeing anyone. Carefully, he began to tip toe down the passage way, and started to peek around the next corner.
Suddenly he was snatched up from his feet, and he cried out in fear and a hand instantly went over his mouth to keep him quiet. The small one found himself quickly hustled back down the passageway and pulled into a room that the door was instantly closed and bolted. Liam turned around and kneeled in front of him. “What in God’s name are ye doing here? Have ye any idea how much trouble ye be in? There’s no reason for ye to be here.” Danny looked up at him and turned reaching for the door handle, but Liam grabbed his hands jerking him around to look at him. “Caitlin is gone; she drowned the other night when ye fell overboard. Ye must return to the island before yer discovered, the Capt’n will gut ye for sure if he sees ye. Don’t ever come back, she’s gone lad, She’s dead.”
Danny looked into the doctor’s eyes in a way that made Liam’s words freeze in his throat. “What do ye know boy. Caitlin is dead, ain’t she?” Slowly Danny shook his head looking up at him. Liams eyes went wide as he pulled the boy closer, “Is she alright? Have ye seen her?” Danny nodded quickly thinking he might have found good help, remembering this man taking care of him when he was held captive before. Liam’s eyes shifted upwards knowing that the insane commander of the ship was up there in his cabin this very second brooding and pining away for his lost bride sinking further and further into madness. However, easing his suffering was not something that was foremost on the doctor’s mind and secrecy about this newly acquired fact seemed favorable. His eyes shifted back towards the boy, “Where is she, ye must take me to her and show me where she is.”
