Renesmee sat impatiently while Carlisle took her measurements, noting everything in his journal. Lucian stood behind him, reading everything over his shoulder. “Carlisle, could I take a look at that journal?” Lucian asked when Carlisle was finished.
“Of course,” Carlisle answered and handed over the book.
Lucian took the journal and went outside to read the entire thing. “Do you actually trust him?” Bella whispered into Carlisle’s ear.
“I do,” Carlisle answered. “At least, I trust him to do what he feels is right.”
“What does that mean?”
“Lucian is very fair-minded. When I first went to Volterra, his brothers laughed at my theories. He listened to me with an open mind. That’s why I wasn’t worried when I noticed he was following Liam and me to the colonies. If he comes to the conclusion that Renesmee isn’t a threat to our kind, he won’t hurt her.”
“She isn’t,” Bella insisted. “She isn’t a threat to anyone. How can I convince him of that?”
“Stay back and let him see that for himself. The one downside is that persuasion doesn’t work on him. He likes to draw his own conclusions from the evidence.”
“Uncle Jake!” Renesmee’s voice rang out as Jacob came downstairs. She ran over to him and leapt into his arms.
“Morning, Nessie.” Jacob greeted her by her nickname.
“Momma says we’re gonna go visit Grandpa Charlie today.”
“Really?” Jacob raised an eyebrow at Bella.
“Yeah, it’s been a while since he’s seen us, and he’s getting a little nervous,” Bella explained. “He obviously can’t come here,” she motioned to all the vampires in the house, “so we’re going to him. You’re coming, too.”
Jacob glanced down at his swollen belly. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? I mean, we don’t want his head to explode.”
Bella laughed and rolled her eyes. “If it hasn’t exploded yet . . . . Besides, Sue and Billy will be there too. I guess Sue took it upon herself to feed the two helpless bachelors.”
“Okay,” Jacob sighed. “Let me go find some clothes that still fit.”
Lucian came back inside and handed the journal back to Carlisle. “I don’t suppose you could recommend a good place to hunt?”
“Anywhere out of state is fine,” Carlisle answered. “The farther, the better.”
“Yes, but I was hoping to possibly find a large grizzly bear.”
“Oh!” Surprise flashed across Carlisle’s features. “Those are Emmett’s specialty. I’m sure he can show you.”
Lucian gave a little bow and went to find Emmett. Carlisle turned to Bella. “See what I mean?”
Jacob came back down wearing an oversized red sweater and black slacks. He popped a handful of cashews into his mouth and put on the coat Alice had picked out for him. It was the least feminine-looking maternity coat she’d been able to find. He climbed into the passenger side of Bella’s new Ferrari and Renesmee climbed into his lap.
Bella pulled into Charlie’s driveway and turned to Jacob. “I’m not coming in.”
“What? Why?” Jacob asked, a little confused.
“There’s something I need to do. I can’t tell you all the details, because Edward can read your mind, but trust me, it’s important.”
“Okay.” Jacob nodded and got out of the car with Renesmee in his arms. Charlie came out as Bella drove away. “She has some kind of errand she needs to run,” Jacob explained. “I think she’s coming back when she’s done.”
Charlie only nodded. “Jake, you look . . . terrible.” Jacob said nothing as he carried Renesmee inside. “Billy, doesn’t he look thinner everywhere except around the middle?” Charlie asked.
Billy looked Jacob over and nodded. “Are they feeding you, son?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Have you looked in a mirror recently?”
Jacob suddenly felt a lump in the pit of his stomach and he headed up the stairs to take a look at himself in the bathroom mirror. Charlie was right, he did look thinner. His cheekbones protruded slightly, and his skin was stretched tight over his face. He didn’t look nearly as bad as Bella had, but he looked malnourished.
Billy was waiting for him in the living room while Sue and Charlie were setting the table. “Jacob, are you all right?”
Jacob lowered himself onto the couch. “I think so. I’m cold and hungry all the time, but other than that, Carlisle says I’m fine.”
Billy didn’t look like he believed it. “You don’t look fine.”
“This is different. He did a DNA test, and that doesn’t lie. This might be just another weird thing. I’ll talk to Carlisle about it later, I promise.”
“Lunch is ready,” Sue called from the kitchen.
Jacob took a seat beside Renesmee, who was eyeing the chicken pasta salad. “Come on, Nessie, try a little,” he urged her. She usually preferred blood, but they weren’t exactly in the right company for that. Renesmee reluctantly picked up her fork and took a small bite.
Charlie couldn’t take his eyes off Jacob. “So, where’s Liam?” he asked.
“Visiting with some friends,” Jacob answered before shoveling a big spoonful of food into his mouth.
“Yeah, Bella said some friends of Carlisle and Liam were in from Europe.”
Jacob nodded and swallowed. “Yep. They’re gonna be here for a while.”
“When do you think Bella will be back?”
Jacob shrugged. “I don’t even know where she went, so your guess is as good as mine. She just said it was important.”
The rest of the meal was silent. When they’d finished, Sue started cleaning up and everyone else went to watch TV. Jacob made it about halfway before falling to his knees clutching his belly, his face scrunched up in pain. “Son of a—”
Billy wheeled over to him. “Son?”
“I’m fine,” Jacob insisted after a moment, and slowly got to his feet.
“Did Cousin Spike kick you?” Renesmee asked.
“Yeah, Cousin Spike kicked me.” Jacob reached over to ruffle her hair.
“Cousin Spike?” Charlie looked back and forth between Billy and Jacob in disbelief. “You’ve got to be kidding me!”
“Need-to-know,” Billy mumbled, words that were slowly driving Charlie crazy.
Jacob settled himself on the couch, with Charlie staring at him like he was some exhibit in a freak show. As much as Jacob wanted to see his dad, he knew coming here had been a mistake. He tried to ignore Charlie and focus on Renesmee, who had crawled up on the couch and was curled up against him.
It was getting pretty late when Bella finally came back. “Sorry, had to run some errands,” she mumbled as she came in the door. “I hope Renesmee wasn’t any trouble.”
“Nope, a little angel as always,” Charlie said.
“Good.” Bella smiled and carefully picked a sleeping Renesmee up off the couch. “If Carlisle’s friends are still here next weekend, I might bring her back again.”
“That’d be good,” Charlie nodded.
“And I might be coming home for a visit next weekend,” Jacob said as he leaned down to hug Billy goodbye. As much as he hated the idea, Jacob knew it would be better if he stayed at La Push during the Volturis’ visit.
“So, what were you doing?” Jacob asked Bella once they were in the car.
“As far as you’re concerned, I was doing some early Christmas shopping.”
Jacob frowned. “So you’re keeping things from me now?”
“I’m keeping things from everyone.” Bella sighed in agitation. “I’m not even telling Edward, because then Aro might find out.”
“I’m not going to be anywhere near Aro,” Jacob pointed out.
“No, but you will be around Edward. I’ll tell you before you go to La Push. It involves you, anyway.”
Jacob leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. “You know, it kinda sucks that we aren’t as close as we used to be any more.”
Bella frowned. “Jake, we have our own lives now; we have our own families. I still care about you, just in a different way.”
“I know. I’m really glad I have Liam now. If I had to deal with all of this on my own I’d probably be catatonic right about now.”
Bella chuckled. “Somehow, I don’t doubt that. You are a very loyal and loving person. I never deserved you.” She glared over at him when he didn’t say anything. “This is the part where you argue with me and say I did deserve you.”
Jacob smirked. “But that wouldn’t drive you crazy.”
They both went quiet and their ears perked up as they neared the house. They could hear the arguing from the road. When they got to the house all the vampires were gathered around Amun and Carlisle. “Alistair had the right idea,” Amun growled. “We should all be running. This is madness!”
Bella looked to Edward. “Alistair left not long after you did,” Edward explained.
“All we’re asking any of you to do is simply be witnesses that Renesmee is not an immortal child,” Carlisle argued back.
“And if they don’t want to listen we all die,” Amun sneered.
“Or, you could run like the coward you apparently are,” Liam snorted. “Go ahead and leave if you’re that afraid.”
Amun glanced over to Jacob. “You seem rather cocky for one who’s bred a half-vampire, half-werewolf freak.”
Liam narrowed his eyes and let out a guttural growl. Eleazar put himself between Amun and Jacob. “I wouldn’t . . . .” Eleazar shook his head. “Leave the wolf out of this.”
Carlisle took a step forward. “Amun, we’ve been friends for quite some time. I assure you, all I want is to protect my family. I’m going to do everything I can to avoid a fight. And if there is one, I would never ask you to put yourselves in danger.”
“Very well, I will stay. But if there is a fight, I will side with the Volturi.”
The crowd began to disperse, and Jacob made his way over to Carlisle. “I don’t mean to be a bother, but I think something might be wrong.”
Carlisle gave Jacob a strained smile. “You could never be a bother.”
Jacob told him about Charlie’s comment, and Carlisle carefully looked Jacob over. “Let’s run some tests,” he said, and motioned for Jacob to follow him back to the basement. He drew some blood and did a full examination. “Jacob, I’m so sorry I missed this, but it does appear that you’re malnourished.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Jacob flashed a small smile. “I didn’t even notice. It was probably a gradual thing, and you’ve got a lot on your plate already.”
Carlisle nodded. “Yes, it was probably gradual. You’re not badly malnourished, and you’ve been eating enough to feed a small army. It just seems to not be enough to support both you and the baby. That’s probably why your body temperature dropped; your metabolism slowed. Your body is putting Little Spike’s needs ahead of your own.”
“Am I going to lose the ability to heal?” Jacob asked, a little worried.
“I can’t answer that.”
“So, what do we do now?”
Carlisle paused a moment. “The only thing I can think of to do is up your caloric intake and put you on bed rest.”
Jacob nodded. “I can do that; the bed rest part, anyway. You said I’m already eating enough to feed a small army.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll figure something out,” Carlisle assured him.
