Randy didn't know it, but the only thing saving him was Amy.
After his loser buddies told him where she was, and that she was with me, he got right in his truck to come after us. The pack was still keeping an eye on him, and this was exactly why. We were a step ahead, and he wasn't going to get anywhere near my girls.
Nobody would let me protect them, so I was on my way to eat him alive, when stupid Xandra had to ruin it. She ran after me, playing in my head a conversation Amy and I had about a week before.
She had been talking about Randy. It wasn’t anything heavy, just something random. We were in the kitchen and she mentioned how gross she thought it was that he put extra, extra mayonnaise on everything.
"If you could just snap your fingers and he would drop dead, would you do it?" I asked.
Because you really could.
She looked at me like I might be a little nuts. I guess it was it was kind of an odd time to bring it up, since she’d been talking about his condiment habits.
I was hoping she would say yes. I'd have loved nothing more then to take care of that for her.
"No," she finally said.
"Seriously?" I asked, a little surprised.
"Seriously."
"If I were you, I think I would," I said, still hoping maybe I could convince her.
"Maybe someday he'll turn things around and he can have a relationship with Daisy. I'm not gonna let him near her any time soon, I'm talking about far off in the future, like when she's grown up. As much as I wish he wasn't her dad..." She sighed. It made me wish that I was her dad. "He still is. I kind of feel like she should have the right to make that choice for herself."
I nodded in support, even though I was astonished that she still thought he would change. What an incredibly sweet and loving person. He couldn’t have been less deserving of the love she still had for him somewhere in her heart.
She doesn't want you to do it , Xandra reminded me.
I know.
So you can't.
I know!
My sister was really getting on my nerves.
That doesn't mean I can't scare him a little, and tell him to get the fuck out.
Well, you just scared Amy a lot by going all caveman on her.
I already knew I owed Amy an apology for that. When Alice saw that Randy was coming after them, I couldn't help freaking out. It was pretty much my worst nightmare, and I just lost my mind.
The rest of the pack had phased by now, so the shame I felt knowing I could have hurt her wasn't even private.
I know you know better, Dad told me.
He was right, I did.
Cole had been the one watching the house and saw Randy leave. He was running along the road as Randy sped down it.
So do we have a plan here? he asked.
Not really, I admitted.
As we all ran to meet up with Cole, I could see through Seth’s eyes that he was with Amy and Daisy at my parent's house. Alice and Asa were with them too. He was trying to make them laugh, but it wasn't going well. I could see that I really had scared my girls. I just wanted to get back to them. As soon as I was done with my little errand, I would. Once I got Randy out of the picture, they'd never have to be afraid of anything again, especially not me.
I could see Randy toss a beer bottle out of his truck window. Classy.
He stopped at an intersection, a little longer than he needed to.
"He's going to the rez," Alice said, just before he made the turn.
From the description he'd gotten of me, he must have figured that'd be a good place to look for us.
Jack ass.
Cole had been cool enough to lend me the shorts he'd had tied around his leg. I suppose I wouldn't have minded doing this naked though, since I knew what I had to offer had to be a lot better.
The last stop sign he pulled up to before he got to the rez, he found the entire pack blocking him. His eyes widened as he took us all in. In one night, I wanted to make sure he felt all the fear he'd made Amy and Daisy feel for all those years. It looked like I was off to an excellent start.
I walked up to the drivers side, resisting the urge to rip his throat out. It was the probably hardest thing I've ever done.
"Get out," I said calmly as I could.
"Hell no!" he shouted rolling up his window.
He looked at me as he did, and he seemed to slowly realize who I was.
"This will go a lot better for you if you do what I say," I assured him.
I saw him grab an empty beer bottle from between the seats, like he'd actually be able to defend himself with it. He looked around at the wolves nervously.
"This is the last time I'll tell you. Get out of the car."
He just glared at me, so I flicked the window and shattered the glass. Before he could get to the other side of the car, I had him by the front of his shirt. I dragged him out of the broken window, and tossed him across the street into the field.
He landed on his side, then scrambled to his feet as fast as he could, which wasn't very.
The tiny cuts all over him from the glass started to bleed. I hoped they hurt.
"You better run," I told him.
We all followed him into the field.
"Maybe when I catch up to you, I'll do to you what you did to Amy. I bet you lost count of the black eyes you've given her."
I knew the pack wouldn't hurt him, but they were putting on a great show with all the growling and barking.
"She gives you a sweet little girl, and you give her a broken jaw. That sound fair to you?"
In his terror, he stumbled and fell flat on his face.
He didn't get up this time. He held himself up with his hands, and turned around to see us closing in on him. His face was covered with dirt and a little blood too.
Good.
I bent down as he looked around at the pack, he was shaking now.
"How long do you think it would take them to rip you apart?"
He wiped the blood from his mouth.
"Maybe I should let that one have your head," I whispered, and pointed at Dad.
Randy was good and scared now, just how I wanted him.
"Think you can manage to do what I tell you now?"
He stared at me.
"Is this really happening?" he asked.
"You bet your ass it is. Now answer my question."
He scowled, but nodded.
"Here is what you are going to do. You're gonna go home, pack up all your shit, and leave. Tonight. Get far away, and don't ever try to come near Amy or Daisy again."
"Why do I have to do what you say?" he asked defiantly.
"Because I'll be watching you, just like I have been. How do you think I knew you were going to the rez?"
He failed to come up with another explanation.
"Fall asleep there one more time," I warned. "I'll burn that place to the ground with you in it. Try me, you little bitch."
I stared him down, daring him to go ahead and do it, try me.
"And why do you get to just take my family from me?" he demanded.
“Because you don’t deserve them!” I bellowed.
He was mad as Hell, but there was nothing he could do about it.
"Fine! Shit. Just get these things away from me!"
We let him go back to his truck, staying close behind him the whole way.
We followed him, but stayed hidden in the trees as he hauled ass down the road back to his house. It started to become more obvious how drunk he really was.
I had phased again, so I could hear my dad thinking that maybe we should stop him from driving. He could hurt some innocent person, and he's done enough of that already.
But just then, Randy took a turn too wide, and too fast. Before I could even process what was happening, it was over.
When the truck landed it was upside down. He hadn't been wearing his seat belt but somehow he'd stayed in the truck.
Should we- I started, but Dad cut me off.
I don't think there's anything we can do, buddy.
Randy’s neck didn't look right. Our eyes met, and I watched the life fade from them. I was the last thing he saw. It didn't feel as good as I thought it would, because it wasn't what Amy wanted.
Was it really so bad though? Isn't it true that sometimes what we want, isn't necessarily what's best for us?
I had no idea how to tell Amy what had just happened, but I knew I had to get back to her.
Do you want me to tell her? Seth asked.
No, no. Could you just take them home?
Yeah, should I say anything at all about...anything?
Um, no. Just ask her to wait for me on the porch. Tell her I'm coming home.
Soon I could hear the sirens. Dad had called Grandpa Charlie. At first I wondered why, why didn't we just cover the whole thing up? After I thought about it, I figured it was probably better not to. It was just an accident. So why was I feeling so guilty?
I remembered how I must have scared her earlier, and felt even more guilty. Was I about to spend the whole evening apologizing?
I phased back once I got closer to the house and got dressed again. I didn't want to frighten her by appearing out of nowhere, so I slowed to a walk once I was close enough that she could see me. As soon as she did, tears started to roll down her face. I stopped right where I was. I wasn't sure if she wanted me anywhere near her, but she ran to me.
"I'm so glad you're back!" she cried.
Relieved, I picked her up and breathed in her sweetness.
"Oh, Amy. I'm so sorry that I scared you before. I just lost it when Aunt Alice said that he was coming to find you."
"It's okay."
It really wasn't, she was more forgiving than I deserved.
"Is your little flower in bed?" I asked.
"Yup, fast asleep."
Amy must have been really glad I was home. She lifted her head from my shoulder and kissed me, and didn't stop. She usually waited for me to kiss her. She'd had such an emotional day already, I guessed she just needed some comfort. I'd give her as much as I could.
"Wanna sit in the grass and look at the stars for a little while?" I asked, when I finally pulled away. I could still taste her.
"That sounds nice," she said with a sweet smile.
I sat down on the ground and pulled her into my lap. It was a chicken move, I just didn't want to see her face when I told her.
She brought Randy up before I did.
"So did you tell him to piss off?" she asked.
"Pretty much."
"Good," she said, sounding satisfied.
"He seemed pretty drunk..."
She shook her head.
"As usual," she muttered.
"He flipped his truck and..."
Like ripping of a bandage, just hurry up and get it over with. But I knew that even though he was gone, this would probably never stop hurting.
"Sweetheart I'm so sorry, but he died before we could even do anything."
She was completely still.
"I would have helped him if I could have."
"What?" she whispered.
"I'm so sorry," I said again, hoping she knew I really did mean it.
Her hands turned into angry fists and she let out a scream that just about ripped my heart out. I held onto her, but she jumped up out of my lap.
"That stupid son of a bitch! I told him a million times. I told him, I fucking told him that if he loved his daughter he would stop driving drunk!" she shouted.
I wanted to take her into my arms, but I wasn't sure if she would go for that, so I let her keep pacing around the yard.
"I know you must think I'm nuts for even caring, but I'm not upset over the Randy that you knew."
She took a minute to gather her thoughts. She must have had so many. The tears I had been expecting finally came. I never wanted to see her cry this much in one day again.
"Before at least there was a chance, I know it was tiny, but there was that tiny chance that Daisy might be able to know the Randy I used to know. Maybe then she'd understand why I stayed so long, but now that’s gone. She'll never get to. Her dad is gone, and that's how she's gonna remember him, the drunk who beat her mother."
She plopped onto the ground and put her head into her hands.
"Why did he have to do that and take himself away from her!"
She ripped out a chunk of grass and threw it.
"Fuck!" she shouted.
I walked over and sat down across from her. When she looked up at me, my eyes became as tearful as hers because of all that pain she was in. Pain that was at least partly because of me.
"How am I supposed to tell her she doesn't have a dad anymore?" she asked.
I had no idea.
"We can figure it out. If you want, I'll be there when you do."
She nodded.
"She's not gonna miss out on anything because of this, I'll be there for her," I promised.
She smiled, as much as she could.
"I know you will."
"I love her almost as much as I love you, and that's a lot."
She laughed a little and wiped her eyes with the backs of her hands.
"We love you too, a lot."
"I want us to be a family," I said.
She smiled.
"Me too."
"I could adopt her, you know, legally. If that's what you want."
Talk about too soon. I thought for sure she'd shoot me down. Instead she looked touched.
"You would do that?"
"I'd love to, I really would."
"I think that would be amazing. We'd have to explain to her what that means and everything, let her decide once she understands it. But I think she'd love that. And I love you for being so good to her."
She smiled, really smiled this time.
"She's a part of you. Part of the package, and I love that. I couldn't imagine my life without you guys in it."
She climbed back into my lap, and let me wrap my arms around her again.
"We should get married, too. Do you wanna get married?" I blurted out.
Oh, God. Did I really just say that? This is not how it was supposed to happen! I'm not even down on one knee, this couldn't be more wrong, or less romantic! I was certain I'd just scared her off.
I was about to take it back, even though one can't really take back a half assed marriage proposal, when she gave her answer.
"Yeah, let's do it," she said, twisting around to look up at me.
"Really? You sure? I mean not just for legal reasons or something like that. I'm sure I could adopt Daisy anyway-"
She let out a small laugh.
"Why are you trying to talk me out of it?"
"I'm not, it's just that you deserve a lot better than that! That was pretty lame of me."
"It was fine! You are so funny, don't be so hard on yourself! Lord knows I'm not perfect."
I kissed my fiance (holy crap!) and told her, "To me you are."
A/N: Whew! Those were a couple of busy chapters! I'm guessing some of you might be a little bummed that there were a couple of characters that weren't really in these past two chapters (or at all). I feel the same way, but like I said these last two were pretty busy already.
However pretty soon there will be a wedding that's sure to be swarming with God knows who. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it : )
Not sure when I'll be able to update next. I'll be looking for a new job and a new apartment closer to the city so I hope to be moving again soon. It will be easier this time (I think lol.)
You guys totally deserved a double update after such a long wait, so I really hope you enjoyed it!
Till next time, be safe ;)
