Caitlin began to stir feeling water drops falling onto her dry lips, her tongue caught the drops and she quickly swallowed them. Her eyes fluttered open finding a form looking down at her. Closing her eyes a moment she opened them again waiting for her
vision to clear. “James?” She questioned softly. No answer came and finally she could make out the face that eagerly waited for her to wake. She closed her eyes a little disappointed, “Liam.”
“Ye gave me quite a scare misses. Can ye sit up? Ye are very dehydrated, ye need to drink.” Cat nodded and sat up slowly, the doctor quickly helped her into a position where she could lean against the wall. Liam poured some water into a cup and handed it
to her, “Sip it slowly, if ye drink it to fast it’ll hit yer stomach hard.” Caitlin closed her eyes and began to sip at it as she was instructed. Liam watched her drink, looking over the dark bruises on her skin. “They worked ye over pretty good didn’t they.”
“No, I said a phrase that Pan didn’t approve of and he gave me this.” Reaching up she touched her tender black eye. “The other ones are from the poles they used to keep me away from the bars. I don’t know what these scratches are from, they’re strange to me.” Liam filled her cup again and pulled her sleeves up to look at her arms, there were the deep bloodless cuts that Cat had found, and the edges of the tears where lined with a blue tinge. Caitlin looked down at the arm he was looking at, “Why isn’t there any blood?”
“Because, these are mermaid scratches. They have a sort of venom in their claws and teeth, much like the one that spiders have. To paralyze their victims so they can’t fight back.” Liam looked up at her, “How many days where ye asleep before ye awoke?”
Caitlin thought a moment before shaking her head.
“I . . . don’t know, I couldn’t tell you. I haven’t felt very well since I woke up.” Liam sighed and pulled his kit over taking out a few things and putting them aside. Caitlin drank a little more water feeling much better with just the few drops that she
had received so far.
“It’s not surprisin’. As many mermaids that attacked ye and took ye away from the ship, it’s a wonder yer still alive at all.” Cat looked over the things he took out and frowned looking up at him. Liam caught the look in her eyes and shook his head, “It’s
alright, I’m just gonna clean yer wounds is all. It’ll help ye feel better. Just lie back down and relax.” Caitlin wasn’t entirely sure about this, but James probably sent him to take care of her like he had done when she was hurt before. She thought it best to cooperate and finished drinking her water, handing the cup back to him. “Let’s do yer back first.” Reaching up he helped her lay on her stomach and went to work attending her injuries.
Back on the ship, Smee headed down to the infirmary looking for the doc. The vigilant first mate thought it would be a good time for the ships caregiver to take another look at the Captain, since it had been a few days. Two crewmembers were already
standing at the door as Smee approached, “Is he still not answerin’?” They both shook their heads as they had been waiting for a while. Smee walked forward and pounded on the wooden door with his fist. “Come on Doc! Ye can’t just stay locked up in there forever! Ye need to check on the Capt’n before his senses return!” He shouted, pounding again. Still no answer, and not a single sound came from within. “DOC!”
The first mate gave a loud sigh and turned around, “Bastard has no call to be broodin’ like this.” The crewmen looked back at the door, “What should we do? Just leave him be?” “No, keep tryin’. If he doesn’t answer before to long, we’ll break the door
down.”
James was up in his room, a chart of Neverland spread out on the table before him as he used his compass and other tools plotting out a course that they would sail around Neverland. They had had this same anchorage for quite sometime, long before he
made his journey into the real world, and they were long over due for a new view of the island. Also he was hoping they could capture more mermaids along the side of the boat, as the creatures were becoming even smarter knowing enough now to stay away from the ship, lest they be next.
Smee slipped in looking at the captain. Hook didn’t even glance up for he already knew who was there. “I expect to weigh anchor at dawn tomorrow Smee. We shall sail around that spit of land a few times until I find a better place for us to make birth.” James sat up untwisting the tool that locked into place, putting it aside and replacing his hook.
“The crew has been allowed become slovenly and lazy, it shall be remedied forthwith.”
He rolled up the parchment and put it away, before walking to his desk and sitting down. “One of them has it, I know they do. There is not a soul or creature in all of Neverland that would toss away something that is such a shinny and glimmering trinket. The mere
value of it would be a subject lost upon them. While the fact that it is pleasing to the eye is alone what would make them want to keep it in there possession.”
“Capt’n, what will ye do once ye find it?” Smee asked with a trembling voice, almost certain that he should not have asked it. It was very unlikely the Captain had thought beyond his current expedition for revenge.
“It is not something we must concern ourselves with now Smee. As I have said time and time again . . . . . All of Neverland can wait, Caitlin is to be seen to first and foremost. That boy, that . . . PAN can go hang himself for all I care, for he shall
wait as well.” James reached for the middle drawer of his desk finding it empty, he gave a loud sigh, “I am a bit dismayed to find that every last bit of spirits have been removed from my cabin, and I continue to receive water with my meals instead of wine.” James
slammed the drawer shut looking at Smee with narrowed eyes. “Do you have some sort of explanation for this, or shall I start carving into your flesh until my cravings subside?”
Smee shuttered at the thought and stepped forward, “Uh, no Capt’n . . . .ye see, The doc, whose been watchin’ over ye while ye’ve been ill, said it would be best if ye didn’t drink for a while. Just until your body has regained its strength. I’m sure he’d let ye have some with yer meals.” James eye began to twitch at these words.
“I beg your pardon? He would LET me!?” he stood up walking around the desk his teeth grinding, “Was there some point while I slept that my command has been usurped? Did I become incapacitated or even revert to that of a boy who has no say over what he does, that you or anyone else aboard my ship would DARE tell me what it is, I can and cannot do!” He shouted. Smee’s legs began to shake and his knees began to buckle from the sudden fear of James’ temper turning on him and growing as the moments went by.
“Well . . . no one Capt’n . . . I mean . . . not I . . .I would never. . . . . . the doc. . . the doc said ye. . . needed time to rest. . . and to get all the spirits out of your system ... otherwise ye would have another episode, and become even more ill than. . . . . than when I found ye!”
James eyes flashed at the mention of the man whom had haunted his wife’s steps, taking too much of an interest in her well being, and starred at her each time she walked out of the cabin in the sunlight that shone on her golden locks of hair. “And where IS
this so called savior of the Captain, who dares to overpower me by taking that which is mine in the name of my HEALTH!”
Back on the island, Caitlin had fallen asleep with the medication that Liam had given her for the pains she had been feeling. Her eyes fluttered open as she lay under a blanket to see the ships doctor still sitting beside her. “Doc. . . where is Captain Hook? Is he nearby?” She questioned in a quiet voice. Liam put down his kit he was sorting out,
crawling next to her and sitting down so he could see into her eyes.
“‘Doc’? Ye haven’t called me that when we were alone for a long while. Have ye forgotten my name already?” He said reaching up and placing his hand on Cat’s forehead checking her temperature, and not answering her question. “Yer wounds are lookin’ much better now Caitlin. With all of the venom and other bits and pieces removed they’ve already managed to close themselves and have started to heal.” Caitlin leaned up looking down at her arms seeing what he said was true. All of the blue coloring that had been embedded in her skin was gone and the cuts looked like normal wounds should.
“Thank you Liam . . . . I feel much better already.” She whispered softly, shifting her eyes away from him and looking about. “Where is Danny? Is he alright?” She said quickly finding that he was nowhere in sight. Liam reached up and clutched her shoulders
in his hands pushing her back down gently.
“He’s alright Caitlin. I sent him back to his brothers, so they would not find him missing and blame him for yer escapin’.” Even after Caitlin’s body relaxed, Liam left his hands resting on her shoulders looking down at her, and slowly his thumbs started to caress her soft skin. Cat suddenly felt very strangely about this, he was a doctor of course, and he had examined her many times, however he had never quite given off the feeling he gave now. Nor had he ever touched her in such a way.
“Shouldn’t we be going to meet James? I’m sure he’s worried and wants me back aboard the ship as soon as possible. We should be going.” She said starting to get up again, however she leaned on her injured shoulder forgetting about it for a moment and
cried out, clutching at the joint. Liam caught her and laid her back down, feeling over her shoulder to find it was indeed out of joint.
“Turn yer head that way, towards the wall a moment, I’ll fix yer shoulder so it won’t hurt so much.” Caitlin was unsure about this but did as instructed. Liam put his knee against her shoulder and took her arm. A few short seconds later, he popped her
shoulder back into the joint hearing her cry out in pain. Sitting next to her again he rubbed her arm trying to comfort her. “Yer a mess Caitlin, I haven’t known ye that long, but it seems as if I’ve been piecing you back together for an eternity.”
Cat frowned looking up at him, “Doc . . . why do you call me Caitlin . . . I know we are friends, but . . . the way you say it is so . . . .” Her words stopped short feeling as if perhaps she was just taking his kindness and concern for her out of its intended and proper context. Liam half smiled and refilled the cup she had been drinking from handing it to her, she sat up enough and took it from him. “You’ve . . . always called me misses before.”
Liam took the cup from her and set it down before looking back into her eyes. “You don’t have to be his misses anymore if ye don’t wish to be.” He said seriously. “This be yer chance to escape him if ye wish it.” Caitlin blinked a few times looking up at him, and he reached for her hand holding it in his. “Caitlin . . . Cat . . . please hear me out.” He began looking for the right words. “I’ve watched ye, I’ve seen ye when yer sick, I’m the one who took care of ye when ye were ill.” He took a breath getting closer to
her still, “I want to keep caring for ye, and looking after ye. I would happily help ye raise that boy if ye wanted him that badly. Ye know how much he wants ye to be his mother. The Capt’n would never allow such a thing, but I would.”
Caitlin sat motionless, clutching the blanket over her form felling extremely vulnerable all of a sudden. She had found comfort in his being a surgeon and part of the medical profession, but right now he was a man like any other and it sent chills of
discomfort up her spine. Liam starred into her eyes and continued, taking her hands in both of his caressing her knuckles with his thumbs. “Haven’t ye longed for two strong hands to caress ye? To touch ye and hold ye close? Rather then that cold steel hook,
that has murdered and shredded countless bodies and taken men’s lives, pressed against your soft skin? Ye would never have to be afraid of me hurting ye or growing angry at ye, or turning a maddened rage on ye when it had nothing to do with ye in the first place.” Caitlin’s eyes shifted down to the two hands that held hers in silence. Liam felt a sort of hope well up inside him at this; perhaps she was listening to him and seeing things his way.
He removed one of his hands from hers and reached up placing it against her cheek caressing it gently with the soft hand of a surgeon. Caitlin closed her eyes silently. Liam leaned forward intending to place a gentle kiss on her lips, but Caitlin pulled
back just before he touched her. “And your hands...” She said opening her eyes and looking up at him. “How many men have they seen inside over your charter with the Jolly Roger?” He couldn’t believe how cold she was, nor the words she chose to break her silence with. Slowly he dropped his hand away from her face. “You may be the ships doctor, and he the ships Captain . . . . but you are both pirates. How does that make
you any different from each other in that regard? People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones Liam.”
He shook his head looking at her holding her hands again not ready to give up. “I save lives Caitlin, he takes them. There is a vast difference between us.” Cat shook her head with a sigh.
“I don’t see how. You take the lives of others as a pirate, and you save your own and let the others die.” Liam shook his head in disbelief, how on this earth could she think him worse then the Captain in any capacity?
“Aye, that might be true, but the Hook doesn’t even save his own. He kills them as easily as an enemy. Ye can’t honestly think I’m worse than him.” Liam moved to wrap his arms about her and hold her close, but she pulled back yet again placing her hands
on his arms to keep him from advancing further, still clutching tight to her blanket.
“He has done a lot of things in the past, so have I. I’ve put his past aside, as he has mine.” Her eyes shifted downwards for a moment wishing this was just another of her dreams and she would wake up from this horrid situation at any moment. “We are friends Liam; at least that is what I thought we were. I’m sorry if I have . . . led you on somehow, or made you think . . . there was anything between us.” Looking up into his eyes a moment she said softly, “The only thing that may ever be between us is friendship. I am a married woman, and I am James Hook’s wife.”
Liam sighed and quickly moved wrapping his arms around her. Caitlin quickly grabbed for her blanket holding it further up to her neck. “One night . . . .give me one night to change yer mind.” Caitlin shook her head and moved his arms from about her.
“No . . . . Liam . . . he doesn’t deserve this.” She said looking up at him. “I don’t love you as anything more then a friend . . . I couldn’t.” She said softly trying to be kind to him and let him down easy.
“But ye don’t love him either, ye told me yerself. If yer goin’ by that, then ye can take me and I can take care of ye. What’s the difference to ye if ye go with him or stay with me.” Caitlin sighed looking down for another moment, why did he persist on
this after she had already told him no repeatedly.
“He needs me. He needs someone.” Her eyes moved back up to meet his. “I didn’t ask to be that person, but he lets me help him. He lets me care for him, something he’s never allowed anyone else to do. Regardless of whether it was his decision, my fathers, or even mine . . . I am his wife. It is my job to ease his suffering how ever I can, and that is what I intend to go on doing.” She half smiled looking at him, hoping that she didn’t hurt him too much. Liam just sat there silently, stunned, and in shock.
Caitlin turned and reached for her nightgown, feeling as if it was beyond time to put it back on and she felt very uncomfortable right now. However, as soon as she grasped the cloth, Liam reached over and grasped her wrist tightly causing her to let go of the nightgown and startling her. “Liam . . . let me go.” She said looking at his hand that held a death hold on her. Several moments went by before she turned her eyes up to look at his face. “Liam, please let me go.” She repeated feeling extremely uneasy.
The look in his eyes was not something she ever wanted to see possessed by any man when they looked at her. His teeth clinched together tightly, “Ye have no idea what I’ve risked to come to ye, how much was at stake. I came to give ye a chance at freedom and to make yer own choice and yer just as stubborn as ye can be.” He pulled her hand away from her nightgown, taking advantage of her weakness and pulling her against him.
Caitlin’s eyes went wide as she tried to pull back away from him. “You gave me a choice Liam, you gave me what you could and I did choose for myself. I want to stay with James, it’s my place.” A sick feeling started to well up deep inside of her when his eyes moved from her face down to her form that was just barely hidden by the blanket. A deep seeded fear awoken from long ago over took her heart as she whispered, “This won’t help you, it won’t change my mind . . . let me go, now before you do something... everyone’s going to regret.”
“What does it matter? My life is forfeit anyway. If the Capt’n finds out I came to ye without tellin’ anyone ye were alive . . . .” Cat’s hands pressed hard against Liam’s chest with enough force that it stopped his advances for a moment.
“What? . . . They think I’m dead . . .” Suddenly she realized why Pan didn’t seem so worried about someone finding her, and was instead only concerned with keeping her locked away. It must have been why she was kept so long and no one came to retrieve her, why would they look for her if she was dead? Her eyes went wide as she looked up at Liam, her heart starting to pound in her chest. “JAMES thinks I’m dead!?!” Her current situation was forgotten as her mind ran over what he could be going through. She
had to get back to him, right now, this very instant.
“Let me go Liam, release me!” She said starting to struggle in his grasp. He held her tight and finally pulled her across his lap not allowing her to struggle. She realized something else, no one else knew she was alive except the lost boys, and they weren’t about to volunteer information. Nobody aboard the Jolly Roger knew he was here with her, and it was certain James didn’t. He would have never sent Liam by himself with the suspicion and jealousy he held towards the Doc. Looking up at him she reached behind
her, holding his attention on her eyes as she searched for something to use, any sort of weapon that might aid her escape. “I won’t let James kill you. We can keep all of this between us and never speak of it again, if you just let me go now.”
“Ye’d be surprised how much stuff he does behind yer back Caitlin. Always making himself out to be a hero to ye. When he lies and deceives ye to suit his own purposes. Open yer eyes woman, ye can’t go through life with a blindfold on.” Caitlin found a rock and wrapped her fingers around it. This was madness, it had to be. She couldn’t believe he would ever treat her like this or act this way. Or perhaps this was the way he really was.
“I think you’ve removed whatever blindfold I was wearing, that allowed me to trust you.” At once, she took the rock and hit him squarely in the face with it, knocking him back and away from her. His hands clasped his face, stunned and dizzy from her assault. Caitlin quickly scrambled to her feet and grabbed her nightgown, running for the entrance of the cave and crawling out as quickly as she could. She whimpered as she shoulder was still tender and her body ached from head to toe. Once she was out of the cave she began to run down a path, pulling her nightgown over her head covering herself. Once it was back on she could run faster and she had no intentions of stopping any time soon.
Liam slipped out of the entrance of the cave as well and called out, “Caitlin . . . wait come back! I’m sorry! . . . I didn’t mean it! I didn’t mean any of it!!” He called out realizing his mistake not sure what over took him. “COME BACK!!!”
Back on the ship, Hook angrily made his way down below decks with Smee hurrying to keep up with him. By this time a few other crewmembers had gathered around the infirmary door trying to raise the Doc. The pirates quickly parted, not wanting to get in the Captain’s way when he was in such a mood. James reached for the door handle finding it locked, and took a step back before kicking the door in with one
smooth motion. He walked inside intending to take out his anger on the one who dwelled inside. However, as he looked around the room he found he was the only one there. He
looked about searching the cabin, but came to a stop finding the doctors kit missing, and several other things as well.
Hook turned around his eyes bright red, “FIND HIM NOW!” The men scattered away from the door and James walked outside of the infirmary heading back up to his cabin. How dare that miscreant attempt to escape his wrath. This only meant one thing, a clear admission of his guilt. He had denied countless times the question of what his true interest was in Caitlin, after her death he must have decided to escape with his life before James came back to his senses. Now he would pay, he would pay DEARLY for all he was guilty of. He had spared the doctors life time and time again so that he may live to looked after Caitlin and give her the proper attention she required. However she was
gone now and there was no reason for him to stay.
