Billy stared out the window at the falling snowflakes while Sam tidied up the living room for him. “Jacob is coming tonight, right?” Billy asked.
“Yes,” Sam nodded. “And there are a few things I’m supposed to go over with you first.” Sam sat on the edge of the couch, trying not to mess up the blankets. “Seth is coming too, though he’s not happy about it. Jake wants to be kept informed. Now, should the worst happen—”
“Do we really have to get into this?”
“Yes, we do,” Sam insisted. “Carlisle put everything in his little black bag that you’d need to cut the baby out if you have to. He also typed out a list of instructions and has gone over everything with Seth. I put the bag in your closet. On the way over Jake is going to tell Seth the baby’s name so you’ll know in case Jake doesn’t survive the delivery. He still wants it kept secret though, so don’t try to pry it out of either of them.”
Billy leaned back in his chair. “I really hate being so morbid. Jacob is coming here so he’ll be safe.”
Sam reached out and put a hand on Billy’s shoulder. “I’m sorry. We’re all hoping for the best, but I know if anything happened to Emily . . . .”
“I get it,” Billy sighed. “I just don’t like it.”
The silver Volvo pulled into the driveway and Edward helped Jacob out. Emmett was right behind them carrying a few large boxes. “Where do you want the dog chow?” Emmett grinned as Jacob headed straight to the couch.
“In the kitchen, I guess,” Sam shrugged. “Let me help you with that.”
“Just show me where to put it. There’s one more box out in the car.”
“Geez, did you really have to bring so much?”
Emmett laughed. “We only brought about a day’s worth. That kid is definitely a dog.”
“Hey!” Jacob frowned. “Carlisle said he just has a very healthy appetite.”
“He was just being nice.”
Jacob picked up a pillow and hurled it at Emmett. “Leave him alone,” Liam ordered as he brought in the last box and took it out to the kitchen with the others. Then he knelt by the couch and wrapped his arms around Jacob. “Listen to me. Whatever happens, don’t forget you have a baby to live for. He needs you.”
Jacob bit his lip and put his hands on his stomach. “I’ll try to remember that.”
Liam softly kissed his mate and stroked Jacob’s chin. “I have to go, but I’ll see you later, one way or another. I’ve waited several decades for you, so believe me, I can be patient when I have to, got it?”
“I got it.” Jacob gave Liam a small smile and one last kiss before watching the Cullens leave.
“I think it’s time for a Slim-Fast.” Seth interrupted the silence and went digging in one of the boxes, coming back with a can in his hand.
Jacob curled up into a ball. “I’m not really thirsty.”
“Drink it anyway,” Seth insisted. “Carlisle said you need to drink one every three hours. Little Spike needs it.”
Jacob snatched the can out of his hand. “Using guilt is pretty low.”
Seth smiled and sat down at the foot of the couch. “I’m taking care of you and Spike like I promised I would. Jake, I’m sorry you’re upset, but you can’t let Spike down. I like the name you picked, by the way.”
“And you’re gonna keep it to yourself until he’s born, right?”
“Yeah, of course. I’ll wait till Edward is born. I mean—oops,” Seth laughed.
Jacob’s eyes shot daggers at his packmate. “You little . . . I’m not naming my son Edward!”
The Cullens found themselves waiting in the clearing again, only this time with more allies. Those who vowed to fight, should it come to that, stood with them. The others stayed off to the side. Liam and Lucian stood out in front. “My brothers have arrived,” Lucian announced in a calm and emotionless tone.
They watched as figures in black cloaks glided toward them in a seamless form. All eyes were on them as they fanned out and took their stances. The wolves emerged as well, flanking the Cullens on both sides. Tension hung heavy in the air as they waited to see whether or not their plan would work.
Finally Aro, Caius, and Marcus appeared. “Lucian?” Aro didn’t even bother to hide his surprise. “Were you waiting for us?”
“I was, but not for the reason you think.”
“Oh?” Aro glanced back at his other two brothers. “You didn’t come to watch us punish the lawbreakers?”
“No,” Lucian answered, his gaze never leaving Aro’s. “Actually, they wanted my impartial opinion. How could I deny such a request?”
Aro shook his head. “Don’t tell me you’ve started letting your emotional ties cloud your judgment.”
“Don’t be silly.” Lucian laughed. “I may have agreed to come because of personal feelings, but my findings are based purely on the evidence presented to me.”
“And?” Lucian stepped toward his brother and took his hand. A silent exchange passed between them for several minutes. Aro’s face lit up when Lucian pulled back. “How remarkable!”
“What is it, brother?” Caius asked, looking rather irritated.
“This is not an immortal child,” Lucian answered. “I have seen her past, and observed her growth with my own eyes.” His gaze turned to Irina, who stood back with the wives. “She never bothered to do any investigating—for purely personal reasons.”
“That bitch is mine!” Liam snarled.
Aro chuckled when Irina took a few steps back, looking like she might try and run. “That doesn’t surprise me. It’s truly a shame you wouldn’t become one of our guards.”
“I wouldn’t make a very good guard. I hate all of you.”
Aro frowned and shook his head. “Why do you hold such a grudge against us? It was Rudolfo who wronged you, and he’s long dead. I let you go since he really should have known better.”
“Yeah, and you sent Lucian to follow us to make sure I behaved. And look, you’ve brought the whole lot to kill us and not ask any questions. I can’t imagine why I would hate your filthy black guts.” Liam’s tone was dripping with sarcasm and venom.
Aro sighed and turned his attention to Edward. “I would like to see the child in question.”
Bella pulled Renesmee close, looking to Edward to tell her what to do. Lucian looked a little offended. “Do you doubt me?”
“No,” Aro answered quickly. “But can you blame me for wanting to see this for myself?”
“Considering the circumstances . . .” Liam mumbled.
“Meet us halfway?” Edward suggested.
Aro thought for a moment. “I suppose that’s not an unreasonable request.” He motioned for the guards to stay where they were and he stepped forward. Edward approached him, Bella and Renesmee close behind. Aro smiled down at Renesmee. “Yes, she really is quite remarkable. I can hear her heart beating, and her scent . . . it’s like nothing I’ve ever come across before.”
Carlisle moved to join them. “Well, Aro, as you can clearly see, no law has been broken.”
Aro lifted his gaze. “Yes, I see that. However, I find it curious that you’ve gathered an army. Why would you need one if you’ve done nothing wrong?”
“I did not gather an army. They are witnesses. It didn’t seem like you would listen to us any other way. I’m certainly glad Lucian came when my brother asked, but I’ve learned not to put all my eggs in one basket.”
“I see.” Aro took one last glance at Renesmee. “You certainly have given us much to think about. If you will excuse us?”
“What’s to talk about?” Liam asked. “You came here because you thought we’d committed a crime, and we haven’t. What reason could you possibly have for not just going away?”
“You won’t get what you want,” Lucian warned his brother. “I’ve seen dozens of different outcomes, and if you insist on pressing the matter, no one will get a happy ending.”
“I will take that under advisement,” Aro assured him.
Lucian snorted. “Rudolfo didn’t heed my warnings, either. He was too excited about finally having a champion that could grind yours into dust. Not much has changed about my ex-mate. Hand Irina over and leave.”
Aro’s eyes narrowed. “Just whose side are you on?”
“As always, I desire true justice.”
Aro said nothing but motioned for Caius and Marcus to follow him away from the clearing. “Hold her,” he ordered the one guarding the wives, motioning to Irina. “You may get quite a treat shortly.”
Irina’s eyes widened in fear. “No, please!” she cried, looking to her sisters for help. Tanya and Kate were clearly torn, but the pull of tradition was too strong and they didn’t move to help her.
“I fear Lucian’s words were true,” Tanya frowned at her sister. “You never even confronted them. Would you have turned them in if it hadn’t been for Laurent?”
Irina was silent for a moment. Then, “How could I have known?”
Lucian’s face suddenly lit up, and he turned to Carlisle. “My dear friend, do you remember that coven who attacked the Powhatans—the one I helped you with?”
Carlisle tilted his head in confusion. “I’m not violent by nature. How could I forget?”
Lucian looked him directly in the eye. “The only difference here is the numbers, if you catch my meaning.”
Carlisle’s face lit up when he suddenly understood. “Okay,” he nodded.
Lucian moved to Emmett’s side, and quietly whispered in his ear. “I think I can do that,” Emmett nodded. Lucian made the rounds, whispering in each vampire’s ear. He paused at the wolves.
“The black one.” Edward answered the silent question. “They’ll all hear you at the same time.”
“Ah. Thank you, Edward.” Sam leaned down and Lucian whispered in his ear for several minutes, pausing every so often to look up and see where each wolf was positioned.
When he was finished, Carlisle turned and tenderly kissed Esme’s cheek before darting into the woods. Liam winked at Bella before following suit. Edward turned to his wife and daughter. “Let’s hope this works,” he said before taking off in another direction. The wolves ran in a fourth direction.
“Lucian, what are you doing?” Aro asked when he noticed what was happening.
Lucian smirked at his eldest brother. “Giving you a very good reason to keep to the agreement.”
“He’s betrayed us!” Caius hissed, his milky eyes burning with rage.
Lucian shrugged. “Perhaps. I suppose it would depend on what you consider betrayal. As I told you, I desire true justice. Leave us in peace, and my vision will never come to pass.”
“This was your plan all along,” Marcus accused.
“Perhaps,” Lucian chuckled. “But the choice is yours.”
“Where did Liam, Edward, and Carlisle go?” Aro asked. “Have they given up hope and abandoned their family?”
Lucian shrugged. “I have no idea where they went.”
Aro scanned the tree line. “What sort of trickery is this?” he demanded.
“The best kind, dear brother,” Lucian laughed. “Don’t you recognize a pack-hunt when you see one? Hmm, perhaps my little Liam did rub off on me some.”
Aro turned to the witnesses, who at this point looked more confused than anything. “You see what they’re doing?”
“Defending ourselves,” Bella hissed, holding Renesmee tightly.
“Indeed,” Lucian nodded, and he turned to address the crowd. “My brother Aro is quite the charmer, isn’t he? My friends know he was only using the immortal child as an excuse for some other motive, they just don’t know what. We could sit here all day as they try to think up some flimsy excuse to massacre this family that will stick. The truth is, they feel threatened. This family is different. When Carlisle first came to Volterra they laughed at his ideals. And now look—he has a large family that survives on the blood of animals. They’ve learned to control their vicious nature, most of the time.”
Lucian turned his attention back to his brothers. “You’re afraid. They’re stronger than you, and you know it. Thing is, all they desire is to be left alone, and I won’t sit back and let you destroy them.”
“Enough!” Aro cried. “I’ve given you plenty of leeway because you’re my brother, but you’ve gone too far.”
“You have that backwards, brother,” Lucian said, still holding his ground.
“You suck all the fun out everything. Anyone ever tell you that?” Liam grumbled as he emerged from the trees with Alice, Jasper, and two dark-skinned strangers behind him. One of the strangers, a young man, had a heartbeat.
“What’s this?” Aro asked as he studied the newcomers.
“I have some witnesses of my own,” Alice announced confidently.
“The time for witnesses is over!” Caius snapped. “I wish to be done with this.”
Aro held up a finger to silence his brother. “If there is more to be heard, we should hear it.”
The red-haired woman stepped forward. “I am Huilen,” she said in a timid voice. “I have brought my nephew Nahuel. I was told there was another like him here.”
“Yes, Renesmee is half mortal too.” Alice nodded and pointed at Renesmee, then turned to the Volturi. “I brought Nahuel here to show you what Renesmee will become. It seems she isn’t the only one of her kind after all.”
Aro looked Alice’s friends over. “Is this true?”
“It is.” Huilen nodded. “My sister used to talk of a dark angel that visited her in the night. I was afraid for her because I knew what this dark angel was, but my sister would not listen. Then she became with child. I left the village with her, and she began to hunt animals and drink their blood. Even when she began to realize the truth she loved the child. Then one day he clawed his way out of her, killing her. She used her last breath to beg me to care for him. He bit me and I became like his father.”
“So you’re venomous?” Aro turned to Nahuel.
“I am, but my sisters are not,” he answered.
“Your sisters?”
“Yes.” Nahuel nodded. “My father found me, and I was not his only creation. He believes he is creating a super-race.”
“If this boy and his sisters were any kind of threat to us, we would have already known about them,” Lucian pointed out. “Now will you admit you have no reason to be here?”
“I suppose you’re right,” Aro said. “We shall take our leave and be happy to consider all of you friends again.” He turned to Marcus and Caius. “The agreement will remain in place.”
Liam snorted but said nothing as he took Lucian’s hand. The Volturi and their guard slowly drifted away, as if nothing had happened. The remaining group breathed a collective sigh of relief; mates embraced each other in triumph.
Carlisle turned to Lucian. “Thank you, for everything.
Lucian gave him a warm smile. “Think nothing of it. Unlike my brothers, I really do think of the two of you as friends. Liam, I believe you have an anxious mate to return to.”
“That I do.” Liam gave Lucian a quick peck on the cheek and took off toward La Push.
