Jacob sat curled up on the couch, staring blankly out the window. He had dark circles under his eyes from not getting much sleep the night before. All he could do was think about what he was going to do if something happened to Liam.
He wasn’t worried about money; he would have plenty of that. Liam had opened up a joint bank account earlier in the week with what Jacob thought was an obscene amount of money. There was also a giant wad of cash in his pocket. Their son would be very well taken care of.
Jacob was in a very unique situation. It really did feel as if Liam was all that was holding him to the earth. That was why bonded mates were off limits; the rest of the pack couldn’t touch them. Should something happen to Liam there would be nothing holding Jacob in the land of the living any more. But then there was the baby. Could he hold on for his son’s sake?
It was a heavy burden for a seventeen-year-old boy to bear. It didn’t help that he was left at his father’s house to wonder either. Seth was out on the porch in wolf form, but Jacob couldn’t hear him. He wouldn’t know what happened until it was all over.
He had eaten breakfast but couldn’t even look at food after that, no matter how much Seth or Billy pleaded with him. Eventually Billy gave up and sat in silence with him. Jacob had given his dad a small smile to show him he appreciated the company.
As the minutes ticked by Jacob began to fear the worst. Surely it wouldn’t be taking so long if the Volturi had listened to them. . . . Jacob jumped when Seth phased back into human form and shouted, “Yes!”
“Please tell me the Volturi are leaving.” Jacob let out a little sigh of relief.
“Yep,” Seth laughed. “It looked like things were going to get bad for a minute there, but Alice came to the rescue. Those bloodsuckers ran away like little cowards.”
“Alice? She came back?”
Seth nodded. “She brought another half-breed with her. I guess Renesmee and Little Spike aren’t so unique after all.”
“Correction: Renesmee isn’t so unique after all,” Jacob said as he rubbed his belly. “My Little Spike is half-vampire, half-wolf.”
Seth rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Liam is on his way to get you.”
Jacob’s lips curled into a smile; all the weight suddenly lifted off his shoulders. His eyelids drooped, his body finally giving in to the need for rest. About five minutes later the silver Volvo was back in the driveway. “Jake, wake up.” Billy nudged him.
Liam came in and went straight to Jacob’s side. “I told you I’d come back,” he whispered. Jacob grunted and tried to open his eyes, but he was too exhausted. Liam softly kissed his mate’s forehead and got up to help Seth load all the boxes back into the car. He frowned when he saw the food had hardly been touched, but he wasn’t going to say anything. Jacob had been through enough.
“Going home now?” Jacob mumbled sleepily as Liam scooped him up into his arms.
“Yeah, we’re going home now,” Liam answered. He couldn’t help noticing the hurt look in Billy’s eyes. Liam almost felt sorry for the man, but things had changed. He and Jacob were a family now, though Billy would always be welcome to visit them.
Jacob spent the whole ride home curled up in the back seat. “I’m hungry,” he said when the car came to a stop.
“I’m sure you are,” Liam smiled. “What are you in the mood for?” It was almost like nothing had happened.
“Chinese.”
“Okay, what do you want me to make?”
Jacob shook his head. “I want take-out from that one place.”
“Your wish is my command,” Liam sighed and helped Jacob inside. The rest of the Cullen family was seated in the living room with their guests, Huilen, and Nahuel. All the witnesses had gone, but Carlisle wanted to speak to Nahuel about Renesmee.
Nahuel stopped in mid-sentence to turn and look at Jacob. “Is this the other one you spoke of?”
“Yes, that’s the pregnant werewolf,” Carlisle nodded.
“The hungry pregnant werewolf,” Liam added. “And he wants take-out from that place up in Port Angeles.”
“I’ll go get it,” Jasper offered.
Jacob snatched the menu and the phone from Liam’s hands. “Thank you, Jasper,” Liam nodded and settled on the couch beside his mate.
Nahuel tilted his head as he watched Jacob order his food. “He doesn’t drink blood?”
“No,” Liam answered. “In fact, the smell of it makes him sick.”
“Very interesting.”
“So, what’d I miss?” Liam asked, turning to his brother.
“If Nahuel is anything to go by, we don’t have to worry much about Renesmee,” Carlisle said with a little smile. “Her growth will stabilize in a few years, then slow. Nahuel says he’s about one hundred fifty years old.”
“Oh.” Liam nodded and turned to look at Jacob. He still wondered how their son was going to turn out. The werewolf gene was activated when there were vampires nearby. How was it going to work when mixed with vampire genes? These were questions not even Nahuel could answer. Only time would tell.
Jasper left to go get the food, and returned about a half-hour later. “They always give us such a funny look,” Jasper mumbled and set everything out for Jacob, who dug in. Huilen and Nahuel stared at him in amazement as he shoveled the food into his mouth, barely chewing.
“Maybe that’s because Jake always orders enough food to feed a small town,” Emmett joked.
“Don’t forget to chew.” Liam patted Jake on the shoulder. Jacob leaned back with a groan when he couldn’t eat another bite. “Feel better?” Liam asked, moving to clean everything up.
“Still sleepy,” Jacob yawned. “Coming?”
“Yeah, right behind you,” Liam answered. It was a major relief to have everything back to normal.
“Do you think that’s the last we’ll hear from the Volturi?” Bella asked, cuddling her daughter close.
“I doubt it,” Liam answered. “Their pride took a major blow today. They won’t want to let this go. Of course, they’ll need another excuse.”
“So we won’t give them one.”
Liam shook his head. “You’re naïvety is amusing.”
Edward stroked his mate’s hair to soothe her. “What my uncle is trying to say is they have a way of always finding a reason when they need one. It didn’t work today because we were ready for them. I don’t think we’ll hear from them for a while though. They’ll want to wait until today is just a dim memory.”
“Bloody cowards,” Liam mumbled as he headed upstairs to his room. Jacob was already sleeping peacefully, his snores echoing off the walls. Liam crawled into bed to snuggle close and frowned when Jacob jerked his arm away with a shiver.
Liam backed away with a soft sigh. The cold never used to bother Jacob, but ever since his temperature drop. . . . He would be back to normal in a few weeks, but Liam didn’t like having to be so careful. Liam had to wonder about their son, too. Renesmee didn’t mind her parents’ cold skin, but that was Renesmee.
He turned when he sensed his brother standing in the doorway. “Penny for your thoughts?” Carlisle flashed him a soft smile.
Liam snorted. “As if you don’t already know them.”
Carlisle shrugged and took a seat on the corner of the bed. “I try not to pry unless there’s something wrong. Li, he’s out like a light, he jerked on instinct. He’d never upset you like that on purpose.”
“That would be the point,” Liam said, not taking his eyes off Jacob. “I can’t be near him the way I’d like to be; the way I could if I had a pulse.”
“Don’t start this again. It might work, but the more likely outcome is you being killed.”
Liam turned to face his brother. “I’m just so tired of the never-ending cycle. Don’t worry, I won’t do anything until the baby is born. I’d have to go to Wales, and I don’t want to leave him.”
Carlisle shook his head. “I wish I could say I understood.”
“Look at it this way: if it works, all of you could settle down for a normal life.”
“You’re going to have to talk to Jacob about this, you know. You can’t make this kind of decision without consulting him.”
“I know. Now, go back to Esme. I know you want to.”
Carlisle rolled his eyes and ruffled his little brother’s hair before getting up to leave. Liam closed the door and settled on the corner of the bed, where he remained the rest of the night.
