It seemed to be the worst day for pirates. Those aboard the Jolly Roger had taken one of their own to torture slowly by the most gruesome execution. The band of lost boys held another crewmember that belonged aboard the ship intending to torture her to get information she was not partial to.
Peter stood up with a hand full of Caitlin’s golden curls, holding them up for his lost boys to see. Another loud cheer shook the walls of the black castle ruins. Danny was being held tightly by some of the older boys to keep him from swimming to the rock where Cat was being held captive. His small green eyes went wide and filled with tears when he saw her long, pretty colored hair had been cut short. Caitlin’s eyes were turned away to the opposite side of the castle, unwilling to let any of these insane children see the tears in her eyes. She was not vain, but the humiliation of it was more painful then any of the wounds she had sustained in the past week.
Peter turned and leaned down next to her, “Are you afraid of me yet lady? Pirates all deserve to die. They’re all evil.” Caitlin closed her eyes and clinched her jaw tight, still defiant as ever. Pan continued looking down at her, “You’re a pirate too, you’re just a lady pirate.” He smiled as he held up her golden locks of hair, “I’ve won and I’ve claimed another prize!” He shouted gleefully.
“It’s not a hand, it will grow back.” She said through her teeth keeping her eyes closed and her face turned away. The smile faded from Peter’s face as he held his dagger to her neck, ready to cut into it.
“Not if you’re dead it won’t.” He said hatefully looking at her. Any other creature, including mermaids, Pan was eager to save from peril, doom, or even certain death. He flew to their rescue and would defend them to the death. His noble intentions were known and respected and he was cheered and hailed as a hero to all of Neverland. But the one chink in his shining white knight armor was pirates, and any other adult that was associated with them. He showed them no mercy or kindness. If she was indeed the fairy they were searching for, she was condemned to death anyway for the crimes she had committed.
Tears fell from Danny’s eyes, as he seemed to be forgotten by Peter, who had originally saved Caitlin from the mermaids at Red’s request. He kicked and tried to escape from the ones that held him, but it did no good. Finally he bit one of the boys hands who yelped and let go and kicked the other hard in the shin who hopped up and down on one foot holding onto his leg. Danny quickly slipped away and ran from the fortress.
The men had paused to take a breather, and play with their captive a bit. James sat by on a rock watching quietly, letting them abuse the man however they wished. It was great sport for the men who’d had nothing to do but regular backbreaking work for the past several months. Sort of a vacation from the other duties that was required of them. Smee stood behind the Captain, not participating, feeling as if something was amiss. They continued with their sport, the rope still tightly around the doctor’s neck hindering him from speaking.
They threw him down on the ground causing him to slide a few feet, as a small silver object fell from his vest pocket and rolled across the ground until it stopped at Hook’s feet. The smile faded from his face, and the commotion from the pirates fell silent as they all looked to the commander. James knelt down and grasped the object, picking it up to where he could take a better look at it. His eyes grew wide as he stood to his feet, holding Caitlin’s wedding ring in his fingertips. Liam had removed it while he worked on her wounds and tended to her other injuries incase her fingers began to swell. He’d put it in his pocket, not having had the chance to return it to her when she disappeared so suddenly because of his idiotic foolishness.
James eyes shifted from the ring to the man who lay motionless face down on the ground. He quickly walked over placing his boot under the doctor’s shoulder and pushing him over onto his back, kneeling down beside him. He hooked the front of his shirt with his iron claw and pulled him up from the ground. “Where did you get this you swine? You found her body did you not?” Liam had been knocked unconscious with the last few assaults that were given him. James teeth began to grind as he began to shake the doctor with his hook securely twisted in his shirt. “ANSWER ME DAMN YOU!!!” Still no movement came.
It was absolutely unbearable, a clue to where she might be, and possibly intact enough to give her a proper burial, was held in the mind of an unconscious backstabber who had tried his best to make Hook into a cuckold. He threw him down on the ground and stood up looking around at the men. “SEE TO HIM! He is not to die before telling me what he knows!” He shouted. The few who had some experience in tending to wounds stepped forward and began to follow orders.
James stepped away from the crowd looking at the ring he had given Caitlin that rested in his hand. “That wretch found you. He found where you washed up on land and disembarked the ship without so much as a word of his knowledge.” His eye began to twitch as he grasped the ring in his fist. What more proof was needed of what his intentions for himself with Caitlin had been?
Danny ran through the forest trees as fast as his small feet would carry him, wanting to find help before it was to late, anywhere that it could be found. He would even take that man, the doctor, the one who had chased her away if he could save her life. He stopped a moment looking around, too flustered to know which direction to take. Looking down a path he took off in that direction hoping that maybe he could get back to the cave, or even towards the ship.
Hook waited impatiently for the doctor to be revived, but he remained unconscious. The Captain paced back and forth a few times looking at the doctor again, still no movement came. “This is absolutely preposterous! This fool could not have honestly thought he could get away with such a thing!”
Aurora poked her head out of James pocket to see what was going on and what all the commotion was about. It was just that doctor who had been watching over that human woman while she was alive. She shrugged and went back into James pocket with a yawn, finding a comfortable spot to sleep in.
The pirates continued to pour water over the docs face trying to bring him around, none of them realizing that a small boy was not far away. Danny was just up the hill next to them, running as fast as he could. However, his barefoot stepped on a banana leaf that slipped out from under him sending him rolling down the hillside, square into the center of the clearing. Sitting up he shook his head feeling dizzy, wondering what had happened and began to get up brushing himself off. He stopped and looked up seeing at least 40 pairs of eyes on him.
He frowned and started to take a step back to run, but the pirates gathered behind him blocking his escape. James turned seeing the small red headed boy that had come to Caitlin aboard the ship, going into the Captain’s cabin, and causing the last argument that he and his late wife had had. Hook’s look darkened as he walked towards the boy. “What an interesting turn of events, yet another whom I had intended to seek out appearing out of the trees and landing right into our grasp.” Reaching down he hooked the boys clothing and picked him up off the ground dangling him in mid air. “Any last words before we see if you too possess the same capability to fly as your beloved fearless leader?”
Red reached up holding on tight to James wrist piece that his hook set and locked into place, looking up at the fierce captain. He was still just a young boy and he was very frightened to say the least, as any child would be when one of their nightmares came alive and seized them. “Nothing to say? I cannot say that I am surprised, since you seem lacking in the ability to speak.” Hook’s eyes narrowed and a small grin crossed his lips, happy that he could take out more of his grief and anger on one who only still lived because of Caitlin. “Farewell then, ‘Danny’!” He reached back to throw the child the rest of the way down the hill onto the jagged rocks below. However before he could follow through Danny’s hand reached up and grasped Hook’s pocket reaching inside his small fingers finding the object within.
James dropped the boy to the ground, pulling his hand from his pocket. “HOW DARE YOU LAY A HAND ON ME YOU . . . .” Even with James shouting, Danny quickly got to his feet, and reached up wrapping his hand around the Captain’s hook and started tugging at him, trying to get him to follow him. James eyes narrowed looking down at the small boy’s pathetic attempts to move him. “What the devil are you playing at?” Hook demanded to know growing tired of this child’s game. Danny released James hook for a moment and held up Caitlin’s wedding ring he had removed from Hook’s pocket. James eyes went wide that his pocket had been picked of such a precious heir loom and reached out, snatching it back from the child. Danny walked a few steps and pointed down a path before looking towards James.
Hook’s mind turned a few times. It was obvious that the boy wanted them to follow, for he knew something that had to do with Caitlin. “You have found her body as well? . . . .” He questioned. Danny turned and nodded looking at him, hoping when he said body he simply meant his friend the Lady. James walked past him looking at the path he had pointed to. “And what, may I ask, are you seeking in return for this knowledge boy? I warn you I have no intentions of playing foolish . . . .” Danny cut him off by running up and grasping James’ hook again tugging hard wanting him to follow as fast as he could and stop talking.
“SMEE leave two men here to guard that loathsome idiot while he recovers. The rest of the crew is to come with me. If this be a trap, this child will be the first to die.” He growled before jerking his hook away from Danny, pushing him out in front of him so he could lead the way. James detested being touched by those filthy child’s hands.
Back in the Black Castle, Caitlin’s eyes remained tightly closed, unwilling to look at the boy who held her at his mercy. Peter looked down at her before poking her sides and then her back. “What did you do with your wings?” It was well beyond the point when Cat would answer anything that this wild adolescent asked of her. Inside she wished she could she James again, but even stronger she wished this humiliation she was being forced to endure would come to an end and they would just kill her and get it over with.
“Peter? Where’s Tink? She could tell if this lady was the fairy or not, couldn’t she?” One of the lost boys said, and the others soon chimed in agreement. Pan gave a sigh at this.
“She’s not here, she said she had to go away for a while. We’ll have to deal with this lady on our own.” Peter began to poke at her soft body curiously with his dagger once again, finding that when he poked her in certain spots she would wince or whimper. Like a boy who had captured a bug and was torturing it to see what it would do before he at long last got board with his game and squished it.
Danny brought the band of pirates to the top of the hill where they could look down, finding the dark ruins of the fortress just below. The small boy turned back to the Captain pointing at the castle, letting him know that was where he had to go to find Caitlin. Hook starred at the boy a moment before stepping forward gazing down the hillside. What on earth would she be doing all the way on this side of the island in the castle? Could the mermaids have brought here there for safe keeping after they took her away? It seemed a strange place to wash up, but he had to find out. He had to see for himself and retrieve her remains if he could.
“Keep a sharp eye fellows. There is an ill nature that breathes danger in this quest of ours.” Pushing the small boy aside, James started down the path, his crewmen following quickly behind. They seemed to be like sheep today, for anything was better than boredom or backbreaking labor. They would venture out to find El Dorado itself if it meant getting out of a days work.
Back in the clearing, the doctor’s eyes opened slowly, looking around, then closed once again. His head seemed to pound with every beat of his heart. Slowly he sat up finding he was not alone, and two pirates stood over him that were left to guard him. “What, is the fun over already?” He said dryly as he tore off a piece of his ripped shirt and used it to clean some of the wounds he had sustained.
“The Capt’n wants ye to wait here, until him and the rest of the crew come back. Seems that little scallywag that his dead wife took a likin’ too knew where she washed up at.” The other pirate kicked Liam’s kit over to him before sitting down on a rock.
“Clean yerself up doc, ye look a fright.” Liam sighed and gave a nod, willing to buy as much time as he could mange to think of away to escape. Danny returned and fetched Hook? If he risked his wrath after Liam had warned him, then Caitlin must have been in real trouble.
“Damn it.” He cursed under his breath as he began to tend to his wounds. Still not understanding why he had suddenly treated her in such a horrible way. The pirate that seemed to have been left in charge looked down at their captive.
“What was that ye said doc?” Liam’s eyes shifted up towards the man a moment before he went back to sewing a gash in his arm, and tying a bandage around it before moving onto the next wound.
“Nothin’. Just hit a tender spot is all.” Both of the pirates chuckled at this, and went about their guarding him while keeping themselves entertained until the Captain returned.
Hook and the motley crew of the Jolly Roger crept into the fortress quietly at every possible entrance. They had heard the cheers of small boys echoing from inside of the castle ruins, not only letting the Captain know that they were in fact about, but that they had no idea the pirates were coming. His eyes shifted towards Danny who was looking worriedly towards the fortress. James dismissed this and decided that he was just nervous that he was going to get caught betraying his brothers.
As they crept in looking down below, the cheers became louder and filled the cavernous place. James eyes went wide as he saw Peter Pan standing on the rock that was the center of the fortress, surrounded by water that he himself had chained countless prisoners to. However this time, he saw Caitlin’s motionless body laid stretched out below the puling spawn, and her golden hair that had hung about her shoulders had been cut short and her locks lay near by on the rock. His eyes began to glow bright red. That they would desecrate her body with their games of glory and adventure was unheard of and an abomination in itself.
“Kill them.” He said simply before turning his demonic eyes towards Smee, “Kill them ALL!!” Smee shrunk back a bit, never seeing the Captain’s eyes changing into such a soul shuttering glow. He nodded quickly and turned to all the others with them, letting them know to get ready to attack. James grabbed his pistol and stood up taking aim. He had missed Pan before, but not this time. Resting his gun against his arm he took aim and fired.
What would have been a killing shot went through Pan’s shoulder instead as he bent down to reach for Caitlin again. He screamed and fell to one knee looking upwards his eyes seeing James as he clutched the wound. At once all of the other pirates stood up from their hiding place and began firing down into the crowd of lost boys. With the first wave of shots five lost boys dropped to the ground, dead as could be. The others scattered trying to get undercover and escape into the forest while their attackers quickly reloaded.
The few lost boys with bows fired arrows towards their enemy, but with the men so high above them they were out of range to the children’s toys. James drew his sword and shouted the command to attack. All of the pirates gave a shout drawing their own swords and flooded down over the rocks heading strait for the group of children. Peter looked around seeing they were clearly outnumbered and at a disadvantage. This was the first time in a long time he and his boys did not have the upper hand. He took his hand away from his shoulder finding it red with crimson, his eyes going wide.
His eyes moved to shore as he saw Hook standing there, his eyes red as Pan’s own blood, his sword drawn and his hook at the ready. Peter stood up slowly his jaw clenched tight. Looking around he saw several lost boys dead, never to be revived again, and the others chased out of the fortress by the ruthless pirates that had attacked them without warning. Tinkerbell flew up seeing her friend wounded, a horrified look on her face.
Nothing about this situation seemed like a game at all, it was real.
Hook still stood on the rocks staring at Pan with all the hate and malice that the demons inside him possessed. All of them were unleashed and starring out from his eyes. “Fight me. You have spit in the face of common decency. You will pay for desecrating my wife. I will cut off your head and have your body torn apart and hung on my SHIP!!!” Peter looked around knowing he couldn’t leave any of his own behind, but found he was the only one left of his group in the fortress and flew up into the air starring at Hook. James eyes narrowed as he saw the boy had no intentions of staying and fighting.
Hook’s voice changed into the most unholy sound, as his eyes seemed to glow brighter, “You coward, FIGHT ME Today the bells toll for you and you will pay for all you have done in FULL!!!” Peter began floating backwards still stunned and clutching to his arm, not being able to take his eyes off the nightmare that stood before him.
James had no intentions of letting this boy leave, not now after what he had done. He stepped forward taking his sword he flung it hard at Pan, intending it to stick squarely into his heart. However Peter moved at the last minute and flew up into the rocks above with all the speed he possessed and disappeared completely. “I WILL FIND YOU, AND YOU WILL DIE!!!!” James voice roared and echoed through the fortress. No response came, not a sound except Hook’s own breathing.
His eyes turned quickly to the rock, and he jumped down into the water making his way over to Caitlin’s body. The pure evil in his eyes quickly disappeared as the remains he had been searching for was in his grasp. Pulling himself up onto the rock, he stood finding his sword in the water on the other side. Reaching down he pulled it up and gave a yell of anger as he chopped away the four chains that held her body against the cold rock. Dropping the sword he fell to his knees beside her. He looked down at her, horrified beyond belief as he ran his gloved fingers through her shortened hair, grasping a single curl that had fallen next to her head. Reaching up he placed his hand on Caitlin’s cheek, not feeling the warmth for the glove that covered his hand. “My love . . .” He whispered seeing the deep black bruise of her eye, and the wounds on her body. She must have suffered greatly.
Just like in his dream he rested his head down against her chest, wrapping his arms about her holding her tight against him. Caitlin’s eyes opened slowly forgetting where she was for a moment before realizing she was being held by strong arms. Familiar arms that felt safe and secure “James?” She whispered softly.
Hooks eyes went wide as he raised his head looking to her face. Her eyes were gray but nonetheless they were open and there was life in them. “You . . . you are alive!?!” He exclaimed placing his hand against her cheek, wondering if this was yet another dream or if her heart truly beat in her chest.
Reaching up slowly she touched his cheek with her cold delicate fingers, “I thought
you would never come.” She whispered looking into his eyes. Still shocked, amazed, grateful beyond any words could ever express he held her tighter against him. Placing his hand gently against her head holding her against his shoulder. She wrapped her arms back around him in turn hugging him as tight as she could. Tears filled her eyes, “I’ve been living in a nightmare James.” She whispered holding onto him tighter, afraid that she was dreaming as well.
“You are so weak my darling.” He whispered feeling the frail way she tried to hold him. Millions of thoughts were running through his mind and every once in a while a totally unrelated comment slipped from his lips. “You were such a powerful swimmer. . . I thought I had lost you when they took you from me.” Pulling back he looked down into her face once more resting his hand against her cheek. “I thought I would never see you again, and I would only hold you in my dreams for the rest of my existence.”
She looked up at him for several moments just happy to see him once again, he was the one she had been waiting for. However it wasn’t long before her eyes began to close as she fell against him. The joy in his face of seeing her again and alive faded quickly. “Caitlin . . .” Hook shook his head not willing to relive the nightmarish reality of watching her die a second time. Quickly and carefully he laced his arm, which was adorned with hook under her knees and lifted her into his arms carrying her back across the water. “ I have not found you just to lose you again.”
