Tinkerbell had flown back to Peter and healed his wounds, sitting on his other shoulder as he slept looking at him worriedly. Even though Peter was in no pain now and was just sleeping soundly. Tinkerbell sat quietly thinking, if that lady was the fairy they were looking for, why didn’t she cast a spell and save herself? She could have easily if she possessed the black magic she was to have. Yet, there was something that pointed to this criminal fairy being somewhere amongst the pirate crew. But where was she?
The crew had gone back to the boats and were now rowing back to the ship. James still held Caitlin close to him holding her tight, unwilling to let her go in anyway. They had wrapped a blanket around her to keep her warm, and none of the crew said a word. Liam was being brought back to the ship as well under heavy guard in the boat furthest away from the Captain’s. The doctor still had volumes to answer for, and with Caitlin still alive his crime was that much more unforgivable. Liam looked towards the boat Cat was traveling in wondering how she was doing.
James felt eyes upon him and turned glaring at Liam in warning. The ship surgeon looked away giving a sigh figuring his life was over, as he knew it. Any freedom and special privileges he was afforded before where most certainly revoked. It was obvious that Caitlin was in need of medical attention, and the reason that his death sentence had been postponed and he was still alive.
Once back aboard the ship, James sat next to Caitlin on their bed and ran a cool cloth over her skin wiping the dirt from her face. His eyes turned towards the tattered nightgown she wore and he grew annoyed with it, and used his hook to cut the dirty thing away from her body and threw it away. As long as he had known her, she had adored being clean all the time and looked absolutely radiant to him. Smee came in and looked at the Captain, “Capt’n?” Hook’s look darkened as he reached for a blanket pulling it over Caitlin’s bare body. Smee winced knowing he should have called out before coming this far into the cabin, hoping he was not about to get a slash across his belly for his mistake.
“What is it, Smee. Has he mended himself enough to attend to her?” Smee stepped closer shaking his head. “No Capt’n, it’ll be a day or two before he’s able to take care of anythin’ more then himself.” James eyes never left Caitlin and he shook his head.
“Have the cook boil some water and have it brought to me immediately. I will not have her wake up and find her body in such a state.” Smee nodded and quickly left to follow the order he had been given. James reached up pulling the cover back off of Caitlin looking at the wounds. The deep cuts and scratches were mending well, but the bruises were still dark including the one on her eye. “Not even in my fits of rage did I ever leave such a mark as this upon you.” He whispered carefully touching her cheek. “That boy has lived far to long, how dare he think treating a woman in such a manner is acceptable.”
Aurora shook her head and sat up having quite a nice nap as she stretched giving a yawn. Scratching her head she looked up seeing the roof of the cabin over head, they must have come back home while she was sleeping. Crawling up out of James pocket her eyes went wide as a frown crossed her face. That FEMALE, there she was! Aurora was certain that she was finally rid of her and would never see her again.
James looked down seeing the fairy in his pocket looking at Caitlin. He reached up and evicted her out of his pocket; she flew up and levitated before his eyes. “Back into your glass box creature.” Reaching up he flicked her in the backside sending her flying in the direction of her small chamber. She grumbled to herself and did as she was told. James turned back to his battered wife and reached up with his hook untying the rope that held the curtain open, wanting to give her a bit of privacy until he got her cleaned up and into a fresh gown.
Peter had awoken and was sitting in his chair in the main all of their hide out. “How many?” He asked looking at the boys he’s sent back to the fortress to retrieve the ones that had fallen. “Eight Peter.” The boys replied sadly, their hats all removed as they spoke of their fallen brothers. Peter looked down feeling a sort of anger at this, but a fear as well. As long as the pirates had been here, he had never seen Hook in such completely reckless hatred.
“What are we going to do Peter?” They all asked looking around like the lost little children they were, they had never lost so many at one time before. All of them were in shock not sure what to feel or how to react. Peter didn’t answer and pushed up from his chair leaving the hideout to be alone and sort out things in his mind.
Hook had tended to Caitlin and now sat at the end of their bed, leaning against a bedpost with his feet cross on the bed watching his wife sleep. He would have a bandana made for her to wear until her hair grew back, so she would not have to feel self-conscious about her appearance. James himself did not care about it, he was just thankful to have her back and to see her alive once more. He couldn’t help but remember when she saw him, a look of thankfulness and happiness to see him rested in her eyes. Once she awoke, he would inquire to what had happened and the things she had seen during the time she was away from him and presumed dead.
Caitlin had gone through far to much hardship and tragedy in the few months she had been here. There was no doubt in his mind looking at her wounded body now that he should have left her in the mortal world. Hook loved her, and wanted above all else to be with her for all time but not like this. Not when most of the pain she suffered was hers and not his. He would have gladly walked through hell and back barefoot for her, but it was she that was punished for his bringing her here. There was no going back now; he could not return her less she suffer even more. She was part of this dark story now.
He had no intention of leaving her side for even a moment, or take his eyes off of her. James wanted to be there when she woke, he wanted to be the first thing she saw so she knew he had stayed with her and kept her safe. Every once and a while he would lay next to her and rest his hand on her abdomen while watching her sleep, dozing off a bit himself but making sure he was touching her so she didn’t wake frightened or feeling that she was alone again.
He made a decision that when she awoke and recovered from this ordeal he would finish her training. She had been taught well and was very skilled in the art of swordplay, but he could teach her how to load and fire the pistols and riffles they held aboard the ship. Also he could teach her how to use and wield a dagger. He would commission one made especially for her so she could always wear it and defend herself less she fall in danger and enemy hands again. She had the heart, and the wit to learn quickly. All she needed was to be taught.
Down below, Liam took medications and kept his wounds clean and bandaged, and spent the rest of the time sleeping to give his time body to heal itself. When he was awake he couldn’t stop thinking about what had transpired between he and Caitlin. He just hoped that she was all right. There was no way he could go up and check on her now that he was locked in the infirmary with the door guarded.
It was a slow time for everyone in Neverland, Peter Pan and his lost boys, the fairies and everyone aboard the Jolly Rodger. Hook had not left his cabin nor his wife’s side since they had returned to the ship. All were recuperating from the ordeal they had all just experienced. Peter Pan’s plans and games were not going as well as they used to, and Hook had become even crueler and more merciless then he had ever been before he left Neverland.
James continued to keep water flowing into her body, sitting her up and pouring liquid into her every few hours, careful not to let her choke. Then he would lay her down again and run a warm cloth over her face, neck, shoulders and down across her chest. He carried for her on his own in whatever way he could conjure wanting to speed her recovery. In turn, Smee took care of the Captain, bringing him three meals a day so he could eat and not have to take leave of Caitlin.
Finally, after days and days of this Cat took a deep breath and let it out slow catching Hook’s attention. Hook quickly moved closer to her taking her hand looking to her face. Her eyes opened and fluttered a few times as a soft groan came from her lips. James couldn’t help but give a sigh of relief, to see her eyes again. Cat’s eyes shifted from left to right before they cleared enough to see it was James who was beside her. James smiled brightly leaning over and kissing her forehead running his fingers through what was left of her hair. “Good Morning my darling.” He whispered to her in a loving voice.
She closed her eyes for a moment as a smile swept her face, “We really have to stop meeting like this Captain Hook.” She said playfully before her eyes opened and looked up at him again. Once again he was dumbstruck, there were no words in any known language that he could say. Raising her hand to his lips he kissed the back of it just looking into her eyes.
The next day, James had finally left her side and was now sitting at his desk writing silently letting Caitlin sleep. It was obvious she needed her rest and he had no intentions of keeping her from it. He continued to write on several papers describing the events of the past few days as a record for the ship. Hook had been keeping one for years when they discovered that memories would become lost on a regular basis. His hand came to a stop as he looked up seeing Cat had risen from their bed and was moving through the cabin.
“What are you doing?” He questioned watching her curiously. Caitlin was heading strait for her closet although moving slowly. James put down his quill not wanting her to come across one of the mirrors that were kept about the cabin quite yet. Getting up from his chair he quickly walked over and caught her wrist pulling her back to him and wrapping his arms around her holding her tightly, “You really should not be out of bed yet my dear. You need rest.”
“James I must look a mess, I should get cleaned up and changed into something else so that I look more presentable. You don’t really want to see me like this.” She said softly starting to pull away from him again, but he pulled her back.
“Your appearance at the moment is the last thing on my mind, I am only thankful that you are living and not at the bottom of the ocean as first assumed.” Taking her hand he pulled her away from the closet and back to their bed. “The first and only thing you should be concerned with, is letting yourself heal and regaining your strength, nothing more.” She looked up at him a moment before giving a sigh and nodding.
“There is my good girl.” He said helping her back into bed and covering her up, before pouring a glass of water for her. “Drink this and then go back to sleep. The more you sleep the faster you will get well.” Caitlin did as he requested before looking up at him wondering. James caught the look and paused, “What is it?” Cat shrugged a little lying back down against the pillow.
“I’m just . . . . your taking such extremely good care. . . .well I mean, I never saw you . . . . like . . .” Hook chuckled and shook his head placing his finger against her lips to stop her words.
“Hush, just rest.” Leaning down he kissed her forehead before smiling, “Just do not impart to anyone your knowledge, hmm?” She smiled and nodded before turning over finding a more comfortable to lay. James pulled the blanket up over her and kissed her shoulder before pulling the cord on the curtain letting her go back to sleep.
Down below, Smee brought Liam’s food to him setting it down on the table seeing the doctor lying in the bed starring at the ceiling. “Didn’t I warn ye doc? Now yer gonna pay for it.” He said coldly looking at the foolish man. Liam gave a sigh still looking at the ceiling.
“The boy came lookin’ for help for her, what was I supposed to do? Turn him away? She would have been worse of then when he found her.” He said growing tired of having to justify himself in this matter.
“Ye were supposed to tell the Capt’n before ye left the ship. It was because ye kept it to yerself is why yer gonna have to pay.” Smee shook his head walking closer to Liam, “The Capt’n’s wife may have bought ye a little time. Right now he’s up there with her, watchin’ over her and taken care of her, to thankful that she still be alive then to think about ye.” Liam looked up at Smee at those words, in a way that seemed excited she was awake. Smee gave a sigh shaking his head, “Yes she’s awake. No doubt the Capt’n will be sendin’ for ye before to long to look her over and make sure she be alright.”
“That should be an interestin’ meetin’. Does he really trust me to be alone with her?” He asked sarcastically, still feeling completely indigent about being put under guard and confided to quarters. Smee just shook his head and headed for the door, stepping outside.
“ye brought this on yerself.” He said before shutting the door and putting the bar back across it. Liam sighed and got up from the bed, poking at the food on the plate not feeling very hungry.
A few days passed by and Caitlin’s marks and bruises had faded into lighter shades and already she was feeling much better. James had gone out on deck to scold the crew for taking advantage of the time he had spent watching over Caitlin by neglecting their chores. When James returned to the cabin, he found that Caitlin was once again where she had been each time before when he had left for a bit. Sitting at his desk, scratching away at the parchment with ink and a quill. “My dear, you should have considered becoming a novelist.” He said closing the door with his hook. “Regardless of how such a career is not thought of very well in society I have no doubt that you would have written rings around all of your peers.”
Caitlin had been quiet, and seemed to become nervous each time she found herself in James’ presence. Her back became ridged and her eyes stayed down at the paper as she dipped her quill into the inkpot once more. Hook gave a sigh at this, she had been acting this way every since she had gone into her closet and seen herself in the mirror. The bruises and cuts were one thing, all of them except the one adorning her face could have been hidden with the right dress. It was the way her hair had been left that made her so incredibly uncomfortable around James.
Shaking his head he walked over and sat on the desk next to her looking down at her. “Darling, you need not feel this way.” He said softly reaching down and turning her face up to his so he could look into her eyes. Even then, she kept them downcast unable to gaze up at him. “It will grow back, and I have already made arrangements in a week or so to have it evened out and left in a way . . . that does not look as if a 10 year old, villainous, swag-bellied, miscreant took a dagger to it. Until then, you can not even tell there is a thing wrong. Merely that you wear a cloth over your head to keep your hair out of your eyes.” Even though he tried to comfort her it did not seem to help very much.
“Come, put away your stories, and your writings.” Taking the quill out of her hand, he closed her journal and put them aside before reaching down and taking her hand pulling her to her feet. “It is well beyond time that you have some sunlight.” Before she had a chance to object he wrapped his arm around her waist and guided her out of the cabin. She closed her eyes and turned her face to lean into his shoulder, the sun was so bright today and her eye was still sore. James held her not letting her retreat back into the cabin. “You can not hide for ever, my trying to hide you from this world is what nearly got you ripped from my grasp.” Taking a few more steps into the sunlight.
“James what if I fall over the side?” She asked worriedly wanting to run back inside and lock the door. Unconsciously she tried to pull away but his arms remained firmly around her.
“Your not going to my dear, we will not even go near the rail and there are plenty of men on the deck to catch you if you feel your foot stumble. Not to mention it is daylight and those creatures do not come out in the sun. You have nothing to fear.” He whispered gently to her. He let her struggle as much as she wanted to, and his words were still soft. However it looked to the men on board that he was forcing the woman out of the cabin against her will, and James preferred to let them think that. All he needed now was for this band of murderers and backstabbers to think he had gone soft.
“Easy now!” A voice from the main deck shout, James couldn’t believe what he had just heard. “We just got her back and she’s nearly in pieces!” He turned his eyes up looking down towards the group of pirates, wanting to know what man had dared to interfere.
It was a difficult situation for Hook to decide what to do. He couldn’t very well lose his temper and throttle the truth out of which one had grown bold when Caitlin stood here and had heard the comment as well. Nor could he just let such a thing pass with out addressing it, less the crew think he feared them. James released Caitlin but took her hand jerking her with him as he walked to the top of the stairs. “Which one of you mewling, pox-marked, hedge-pigs have decided they wish to share same fate as the last who DARED to interfere with my marriage!” He shouted.
Of course the entire crew hushed immediately and no one stepped forward. Caitlin was a little confused and frightened seeing the way James had changed from how he had treated her the past few days into this so quickly. He held her wrist tightly and jerked her around in front of him, wrapping an arm around her back against him her feet nearly leaving the ground. “GET BACK TO WORK!!!” He ordered. The men grumbled darkly and broke off to return to their chores. James glared at all of them in complete annoyance that they would so willingly and openly challenge his authority after all that had happened.
“This will have to wait for another day.” He said into Caitlin’s ear, turning around and pushing her roughly towards the cabin. She scrambled to her feet and opened the doors hurrying inside. James of course followed after her locking the doors behind him. He turned back shaking his head but stopped. Caitlin stood behind his desk putting it in between them as she starred at him wide eyed. “Caitlin, do not look at me in such a way.” Hook said, not wanting to go back to the daily struggle they had before she was taken. He hated seeing that frightened rabbit look in her eyes, and had hoped it would have been forgotten.
She said nothing nor made a move, he began to walk towards her. “You must understand, I am the Captain of a pirate ship whose crew is filled with undisciplined criminal . . . .” Just before he could reach her Caitlin quickly pulled away putting his chair between them. James stopped and took a jagged breath, not wanting any of this to happen. “Caitlin, you must not do this. I am not . . . fully back to myself after . . . after having thought you were dead for nearly two weeks.” He took two slow steps towards her feeling he had to explain before a demon jumped out and grabbed her shaking the truth into her.
“It has left me . . . very unpredictable. I have put no demands on you, I have cared for you, comforted you, and watched over you since your return. . . . I realize you are very frightened of something else happening to you and even suspect me of wanting to harm you. . . . but I do not.” He took another step towards her but stopped when he saw her body tense getting ready to bolt away again. He clinched his fist tight a moment before releasing it.
“Caitlin . . . I love you with each breath I take, with each and every beat of my heart, and every part of my being . . . . even with this, it does not do to act this way around me. Especially now. I wish I could say that I will not hurt you if you continue, but I would be a liar for I cannot control the beast that has laid dormant inside.” He closed his eyes clinching his fist tight again as his jaw tightened as well, swallowing the lump in his throat. “I have not even tried to take you, even though I have yearned to make love to you as soon as you awoke from your slumber.” His eyes opened looking a bit darker, “That small detail is not helping me control this thing that lives inside. Please Caitlin . . . come to the table and sit down.”
“James . . .” She whispered wanting to take another step backward but feeling if she did, she would be pounced upon like some animal upon it’s prey. “How can I trust you when I see you change so quickly in front of your crew.” James closed his eyes again for a moment, a light sheen of perspiration crossing his brow.
Aurora had heard a slight commotion and poked her head out from under the cover that kept her bedchamber hidden. Cautiously she snuck around to where she could see and watch what was going on. It was curious to say the least, and her little wings flitted a couple times as she watched.
“You would not be able to trust one man of my crew if they thought they could challenge me unchecked.” His eyes opened still dark as he looked at her. “It would not be safe for you child. If they thought me weak in any form. Even when it comes to my own wife.” Hook began to take one last step towards her, but her body shifted it’s weight in such a way he froze in place. “Caitlin . . .” He could almost feel the animal trying to claw it’s way out. “. . .you must come to me now. Move in no other direction except towards me.” He said maintain his last ounce of resolve and control. “Trust me and do as I say.” James could almost see what would happen to her if she tried to escape him, and he would have no control over it. There was no murder involved, but he could not imagine it would be pleasant for her in the least.
When he saw pan and his lost boys gathered around cheering and holding the one thing that was most dear to James heart, it unleashed the beast that had grown inside and he had brought back to Neverland with him. It had been lying dormant until Caitlin’s supposed death had awoken it. Then a glimpse of what it’s full furry and wrath could be was shone to Peter Pan before he flew away like the coward James had always seen him to be. His very voice changed and made the angels themselves shiver in fear.
Time seemed to stand still as he stood there starring at her, and she at him. There was a desperate hope inside of him that she would do as he asked, and his breath caught in his chest as it felt like a thin thread was all that held this thing back. “Come to me Caitlin . .” He repeated as gently as he could trying to coax her to come to him. Caitlin herself was struggling, as it seemed no one anywhere in this land could be trusted. Not those children, not Smee, not Liam . . . not even James. Why had he spoken gentle words to her just outside, then turn them so cold as he roughly manhandled her almost as if he was showing off to the crew.
James eyes went wide as he could see her weigh starting to shift backwards, “No . . . Caitlin do not! . .” But it was to late, her decision was made and she turned to run away from him. Inside he felt ready to weep as he could feel his very heart darken, and his eyes open turning black as coal starting to glow red.
