The entire crew stood out on deck, for it was not often they had a chance at real entertainment. Caitlin had woken before dawn and made her way out on deck after she bathed and got dressed. Hook was still soundly asleep and she let him rest, knowing he had suffered perhaps more then she these past few weeks. The early morning watch was the only one on deck and she began to converse with him. Now a crowd was gathered around watching intently.
James stirred and turned over on his side expecting Caitlin to still be lying beside him. Even though they slept apart for the time being, they still shared the same bed. His eyes opened as he sat up looking about the cabin giving a loud sigh, “I really wish she would cease this disappearing act.”
A short while later, after the Captain had had time to put himself together and dress, he walked out on deck. He arched a brow seeing the crowd that had gathered on deck, but he could not see what all the fuss was about.
“Now lass, it is that simple. Ye just aim at your target, and throw.” The watch that she had been talking with placed a knife in her hand. She nervously took the weapon, and held it as she had been shown. Some of the others in the crew had formed together a crude dummy with a spare set of clothes and straw and hung it on the deck as a practice target. Caitlin took a step forward and looked at her target.
James walked down to the grouping where he could see what was going on, none of the men noticed him for they were watching so intently wanting to see what happened. Caitlin took a deep breath and threw the knife as hard as she could. The weapon flew through the air and hit the practice dummy in the neck. Her eyes went wide as she took a step back. The men all looked at each other before giving a cheer of approval. She looked at the man who had taken it upon him self to teach her this skill. “It might just be luck lass, here. Try it again.” He handed her another knife and she swallowed the lump in her throat as she took her stance once again.
Hook watched quietly. She held a talent for weaponry that seemed hidden deep inside. He had seen her in a sword battle, and sparred with her himself and knew there was something about her that was eager to find it’s way out.
Caitlin threw the knife and once again it flew through the air, much lower this time squarely between the dummy’s legs. Cat’s eyes went wide as her hand clasped over her mouth feeling very embarrassed. The man who had been teaching her jaw had dropped as his starred wide eyed at her shot. The crowd of men didn’t cheer this time, as they all seemed as if they could feel the dummy’s pain. “Uh . . . I think maybe, ye’ve uh . . . practiced enough.” He said looking at Cat. Then men all nodded and started to disperse.
“No!” Their commanders voice stopped every man from moving from his spot parting as he walked through them to Caitlin. He looked down at her very interested and curious about this undiscovered talent she seemed to have hidden away. “Give her another dagger immediately.” The men looked around at each other, before one of the men offered up his dagger to be used. James never took his eyes off Caitlin’s as he took the knife and held it out to her to take. Caitlin looked down and took the hilt of the dagger before looking back up at James. “Again Caitlin.”
Cat blinked a moment before taking a step back to give her self plenty of room. Taking aim once more, she threw it yet again and it flew through the air skewering the dummy through it’s belly. Her eyes went wide as she turned and looked at James. Hook was extremely impressed himself, as a smile found it’s way to his face once again feeling a deep sense of pride swell inside of him that she wore his name. “The rest of you get back to your duties!” He ordered keeping his eyes on his mysterious bride. Once they dispersed he approached her. “You seem well enough to begin other areas of defense would you not say?” He took her arm and lead her way from the main deck, up the stairs to the bow of the ship where they would have space and a semi amount of privacy.
Aurora sat in her box on her small feather motionless; with the darkest look on her face anyone had ever seen anywhere. She was sure that she had been ridden of that stupid human female. Now she was back, and once again she was confined to this small glass prison not allowed to leave it unless her captain called for her. Her arms were crossed over her chest and her wings were frozen in place on her back as she just sat starring. She had to do something to finally rid herself of this. Something that wouldn’t go wrong, something that would be permanent.
Onshore, Peter and his lost boys had finished burying their dead and the cheery playfulness that had always been part of the lost boys was nowhere to be found. All of them felt there loss and wasn’t sure how to feel about it. The truth was, had they not started something with the woman who was so dear to Captain Hook, those same lost boys might still be alive and well. The fault was theirs, but they blamed the pirates and the Captain aboard the Jolly Rodger. Once their grief and shock had subsided enough, they would strike back.
“Again Caitlin!” James ordered as they stood on deck together. Standing opposite of each other, James had removed his outer coat down to his vest. The attachment he had in place was that of a dagger instead of a hook. Caitlin was completely frustrated and her hair was a bit of a mess, as each time she lunged at him with her dagger, he blocked her or threw her to the ground. HE wasn’t doing it to be mean or to be rough with her for no reason, he was teaching her a new skill and this was how one learned. Cat reached up sweeping a strained of hair from her face breathing hard as she looked at James.
“James, this is pointless. I’m obviously no good at this sort of fighting.” She said ready to either move on or to quit for the day and go back into the cabin. James raised his brow at this, there was no way he was going to allow her to just give up.
“Only because you are not concentrating and using your head instead of your hand. Now take your stance and attack again. Now!” He shouted. James was a good teacher, but a hard one. Especially with her for he wanted her to know how to defend herself so she would not be taken captive or harmed by another soul or creature in this ghastly place. Cat took a deep breath and let it out slowly trying to clear her mind of the frustration and took her place holding the dagger firmly.
After a moment she lunged at him again, but he moved to the side and pushed her to the ground with one easy move. Caitlin fell to her knees and smacked the floor hard with her hands. James sighed walking towards her, “Caitlin, your not taking my instruction.” He said reaching down and pulling her to her feet. “I have seen you listen to someone for five minutes, and then just a moment later aim at your target and hit it with deadly accuracy. What difficulty are you finding with following instructions now?” He questioned.
Cat sighed and looked away from him, her jaw clinching tight. “Caitlin? Answer me.” He demanded, still in the role of a teacher rather then that of a husband. Cat stayed silent for another moment before looking at the weapon in her hand.
“I don’t want to learn how to use this James.” She said plainly, turning the knife over in her hand before looking up at him. “Why do you insist that I learn how to use this.” Hook wasn’t quite sure what this new theatrical game was.
“I beg your pardon?” Reaching over her took the dagger from her and held it up to where she could see it. “This is the smallest, and easiest weapon to carry and access. You need this Caitlin. I wish you to learn this skill as well as the others so that you may defend yourself.” He lowered the knife taking a breath stepping down from his ton for a moment. “I have tried with everything in me and all of my power to protect you and keep you safe since I brought you here to this place.” Reaching up still holding the dagger but sure to turn it away from her, he touched the bruise that had lightened considerably over the past few days. “It is well beyond obvious that I have not been successful in my quest.” He stopped himself there, for if he dwelled on the past few weeks he would not be able to continue to teach her today. “It is why you must learn how to defend yourself. You do well enough on your own, I have seen it with my own eyes. But you are going to have to learn to use weapons such as these, for those lost boys each have one and they will not hesitate to use it on you. Do you understand this?”
Caitlin listened to all he had to say looking down at the dagger, which he held once more. After a few moments the truth about the reason she held inside for not wanting to do this came out. “With the problems we face, and the nightly adventure that takes place behind the closed doors of our cabin . . .” She began looking into his eyes, “I do not wish to learn a skill that fear may misuse against what may have caused it.” Cat said. Hook stopped and just looked at her, he had not honestly thought about this yet. True, she had the sort of heart that if it knew how would defend itself in a way that might be a bit drastic if she held the knowledge.
Stepping forward he looked down into her eyes, barely any space between them. “Caitlin . . .” He began softly, “I want you to learn how to defend yourself. Do not be afraid that your skills may one day be used against me, for I have no doubt that I will have more then earned it should such an event come about. I have no intentions of putting your life in danger, by putting my own before yours.” He smiled and kissed her forehead, reaching up and touching her face with his fingertips. “Besides my love, You have not yet beaten me in a game of skill. You can imagine why your learning how to use this tiny thing is hardly of any consequence to me.” Hook couldn’t resist getting a jab in at the last. However it was true, he would be better then she for he had many more years of practice and experience, and when it came down to it he was much stronger then she was.
James reached up and took her hand putting the dagger back in it, “Now, lets go over the basics again shall we?” He walked around be hind her, and used his good hand to wrap around hers which held the dagger. He used his bad arm to wrap around her waist to pull her against him so he could guide her better, careful to mind the attachment so he would not injure her.
“Do not be afraid to use your free hand my dear, that is half of your weapon. You must always watch your enemy, and if you can help it you wait for him to strike at you first.” He began, showing her the different movements and stances one at a time.
Liam had come up on deck and sat on the supply boxes looking up towards the second deck where James and Caitlin where sparing. His hands were busy at work with a few pieces of leather straps forming a sort of rope for something to do. Each time someone walked by his eyes quickly turned back to the piece in his hand and he waited for them to pass. Yet his eyes kept turning upwards again to see what little of Caitlin he could. Since they had returned, and she had run from him in the island, they had not spoken to each other. Cat had not seen him for she was asleep the few times he was near her and James was standing right there watching his every move. It seemed as if the only chance he would ever get to speak to her again was if she got injured and he certainly did not wish such a thing on her.
Still he wished he could talk to her, the terms they left on weren’t exactly favorable. To do so would only earn him the sentence that had been spoken before Caitlin was found alive. Once again she was the only thing that kept him from being dragged along the underside of the ship. His thoughts wondered back to someone else, that he wondered if Caitlin thought about as well. She had not said anything about him or tried to get back to shore to see him. He didn’t quite understand it.
James released Caitlin and they stood across from each other once more. “Now, take my instruction this time and put it to good use. I know you much better then you think, and you hold the talent and the fire in your heart. Attack!” Cat hesitated for only a moment, before lunging at him with the dagger.
He started to dodge her attempt as he had done countless times today, but she spun about almost catching him off his guard, and he put his own dagger up just in time to keep a slash from being placed across his shoulder. Hook grinned as he reached up with his hand pushing her back. “There is the girl I chose to be my bride!” He shouted triumphantly as Caitlin came at him again. Hook blocked several more attempts, before taking a few swipes of his own. Cat raised her forearm blocking his strike as she made another attempt of her own. Yet his hand came up and blocked her strike as well. Both of them stepped back taking a breath looking at each other before clashing together again.
Now a crowd was forming on the steps, as the pirates were all anxious to see this battle. The sound of steel hitting against each other was always an enticing sound. Cat made a huge lunge towards him, and he grabbed her wrist spinning her about as he landed his dagger against her neck stretching her upwards once he pulled her back against him chuckling to himself. “Now my dear, if you could just learn out to control that temper of yours, I dare say you will be a force to be reckoned with.” He pushed her forward again releasing her from his grasp.
Caitlin didn’t stop or hesitate this time as she instantly sprung back swinging the dagger around hard. Yet she was stopped cold finding James fingers around her neck holding her in place. Cat remembered the last time he had placed his hand to her throat in such a way, and her eyes instantly looked to his hoping that she would not see that dark color with a glow of crimson. However it was James and not that demon that she had met just a few nights before. There was a grin across his face as he looked at her, bursting with pride. He loved to see her fight, and to watch her spar with him. It aroused him beyond all reason, to see that fire that burned in her heart unleashed. His hand slid to the back of her neck as he pulled her against his body kissing her passionately, unable to help himself.
Caitlin was stunned, and the dagger slipped from her hand falling to the deck of the ship. Suddenly several whistles and catcalls were heard coming from the stairs, and James pulled back casting his eyes in that direction. All the eyes that had been upon them instantly disappeared to return to their duties, knowing full well they shouldn’t have been watching.
James turned his eyes back to Caitlin. “I think we have had enough lessons for today.” He said looking at her with a smile. “Come, we have other matters to discuss.” Hook to her hand and began to lead her back to their cabin.
Aurora still in her box, had fallen asleep on her feather bed and was snoring loudly, her arm draped over the side and hanging down to the floor carelessly. James pulled the cover off of the lantern and unhooked the latch, snatching up the small sleeping fairy and slipping her into his pocket. She slid easily inside, the warmth of his body against her only causing her to sleep deeper.
Hook walked out to where he had sat Caitlin down at their table before sitting in the chair he had moved closer to her. Cat just waited quietly as James had said he had more lessons to learn that involved this strange and mysterious land they lived in and where just as important as the combat training he had begun to give her. “My dear, there are several things that you may see here that you will have difficulty accepting. Sorts of things that you have only read about and stories, books, children’s fairy tales, and other flights of fancy that you have dismissed when you grew older into a woman. You must understand, that here these things really do exist and you mustn’t be afraid of them.” He started to reach into his pocket but paused a moment looking into her eyes. He wasn’t quite sure if she was in the frame of mind yet and wanted to be absolutely certain. “What I am about to show you my love, is real and alive. You have encountered creatures such as this before, but like I have already expressed to you, you have dismissed them as large lightening bugs or fireflies.” Caitlin moved closer and nodded waiting to see what he wished to show her.
Reaching in he wrapped his hand around Aurora and pulled her out of his pocket. Moving a bit closer to his wife, he opened his hand slowly holding the creature up for her to see. Caitlin looked curiously at the small sleeping creature for a moment as her eyes grew as wide as cannon balls. “This is a fairy, and her name is Aurora Sun.” He said softly not quite seeing the look in Caitlin’s eyes.
“Oh my God.” Caitlin said with great shock and surprise in her voice. There in Captain Hook’s hand, laid the woman in her dreams and her name was that of the one who had constantly haunted her nightmares. Cat bolted up from her chair knocking it over as she took a few steps back. Hook blinked standing to his feet as well as her reaction was completely unexpected. He was sure that he had prepared her for this.
“You must not be afraid Caitlin, this small thing could not hurt you.” He looked down at Aurora once again noticing her strange gothic appearance, “She is quite a bit different from the rest of her kind, much darker in many ways.” Caitlin shook her head starting to breathe hard. Aurora opened her eyes slowly as she sat up stretching her back with a yawn, having risen from a nice and peaceful slumber. James watched Caitlin not sure of what to do. “Love calm down, she is just a pixie.”
Aurora looked up at James wondering what he was talking about, and then turned seeing Caitlin starring strait at her. Suddenly she realized just how much trouble she was in. There was no doubt that his human female would recognize her for she had hardly changed her appearance in her dreams. “It’s her.” She said her eyes frozen on the small creature that James held in his hand.
James brow furrowed slightly in confusion at her words, “What?” wanting to know what on earth she was speaking of. Cat’s moved up to James.
“The woman in my nightmares.” She said her eyes still wide with fear as the images that had flooded her dreams started to replay in her mind. Aurora bolted up into the air looking at James seeing he did not react right away and Caitlin’s words had not sunk in yet. Quickly she turned and zipped out of the cabin as fast as her little wings could carry her through the window that had been left open, leaving the ship. Hook followed after her but was to late, she was already gone.
“Damn that little devil!! How DARE SHE HAVE DONE THIS!!!!” He roared as he grit his teeth in outrage. Hook turned back seeing Caitlin pressed up tight against the wall of the cabin where she had been trying to get as far away from her nightmare as possible. James quickly walked over to her looking into her eyes, raising her chin so she would look at him. “Its alright Caitlin, she is gone.” He said softly pulling her into his arms trying to comfort her. Reaching up he laid her head against his shoulder holding her tight resting his cheek against the top of her head. A dark look crossing his face as the full reality of what had been going on flooded his thoughts. “She will not harm you anymore, you are safe now.” Once again he found himself lying to his wife, but what else was he to say? That he couldn’t protect her in her dreams, and she couldn’t very well protect herself? She would never lie down to sleep again.
“Times like these, are when it should hold true that . . .” He paused a moment as his eyes shifted upwards, speaking the words through his teeth, “There is no such thing as fairies.” Hoping the one that had been struck down dead was the little monster who had been tormenting his wife. If it did not, he would soon find her and seal her fate as painfully and slowly as possible. There was no doubt in his mind she would return to the ship, . . . . he knew full well, that her heart belonged to him. Even though he cared not, it would not allow her to keep away from the ship.
