Several weeks went by. Quiet weeks, much quieter then any other time there had been in Neverland since James and Caitlin had returned. Each day, James tried to teach her a new skill, and introduce her to something of this world. Hook knew that her ignorance that he tried to keep her in was the reason for her abductions, and her disbelief in things, that allowed her to put herself right in front of danger.
Today, James and most of the crew had gone ashore. It had come time once again to stock provisions, for the food supply was running low. He had felt confident for the first time in a long time to leave Caitlin anywhere that was not in his direct line of sight, and even then he was strangely uneasy about doing so. As he went ashore, he constantly pushed the crew to work harder, faster, and cut out their breaks so they could be done and return back to the Jolly Roger as soon as possible.
Aboard the ship, Caitlin slipped out of her cabin and sighed softly. Slowly she made her way to the main deck, walking up towards the rail looking out over the water. She had been feeling quite ill over the past two weeks, and she had started to feel dizzy inside the cabin and thought that some air would make her feel better and calm her stomach some. Looking down into the water, she could see clearly all the little plants and fish that resided below the wooden haul of the ship. Strange, it seemed so peaceful and exciting during the day. Not dark, mysterious, and frightening as it was at night.
Her mind wondered back to Red a moment, wondering what had become of him. She had not spoken of him or tried to get back to him for fear that insane young leader of the lost boys might have killed him for helping her. Caitlin couldn’t bare the thought, and if the reality was true it would be more painful then any thing she could imagine. Suddenly, she felt weak and she lifted her hand to her cheek. “Miss? Miss are ye alright?” One of the crewmen said standing nearby.
Before she could say anything, her knees gave way and she fainted. She would have fallen hard onto the deck if the pirate who had inquired of her well being hadn’t stepped forward and caught her. The few others on deck rushed over and looked at her wondering what was wrong. Smee had of course been left in charge aboard the ship. Usually, he accompanied the Captain ashore but once again, Smee was the only crewmen aboard that derived the least suspicion where Caitlin was concerned, and if nothing else, he was loyal to James.
“Get out of the way, Move it ye dogs!” Smee said pushing them out of the way, seeing Caitlin’s skin almost white as he knelt down next to her. He looked up, “Get the doc out of his room, and tell him to get up to the Captain’s cabin.” Smee ordered, as he directed the one who had caught the ill woman to carry her upstairs.
James sat impatiently on shore, going over a few things in his maps with all the information he had been collecting over the course of the last few months. He’d not had time to put it into good use, but it was becoming time to look towards his plans once more. Caitlin was doing much better, and accepting things more then she had before. The tension between them was still there, but it seemed as if they had both been beaten down too much for the passion that was once in their relationship to cause them to fight, argue, or even make love. Hook had never wanted this sort of daily struggle to come about in their marriage, he had worked extremely hard to prevent it from happening, but one night seemed to make all of his hard work and constant efforts worthless.
Caitlin was feeling the pinch as much as Hook was. Many nights, she found herself unable to sleep and would rise from their bed and sit at his desk, filling page after page with meaningless words. They had forgiven each other for the indiscretions that had occurred whatever they might have been, but still it was as if a wedge had been driven in between them. Each longed to hold the other close, and touch as they once did but neither of them dared to do so; as if fear of something horrid happening kept them apart. The last few weeks had been absolutely peaceful, and as normal as they could be under the circumstances. It would be easy to attribute it to their lack of intimacy. Especially with the extensive belief that all pirates held in superstitions, you would not want to upset things so they would turn against you once again.
“Capt’n?” One of the pirates who had come ashore with them broke the silence having approached the ill-tempered captain. Hook didn’t even acknowledge him as he continued to look over his charts and maps. “We . . we have a problem Capt’n.” James hand halted his writing as his eyes shifted upward.
“Dare I ask what it might be this time?” What was it about this island, that every time they came to shore something new and dastardly was afoot? The look on the crewmen’s face told him it wasn’t something small and meaningless as it usually was.
Caitlin’s eyes fluttered open as she looked upwards a moment before sitting up. “Take it easy now misses.” Cat stopped instantly recognizing the voice and found Liam sitting next to her on the bed. The look in her eyes was that of confusion as she looked about again wondering why he was here when James was not.
“Ye had a spell misses Cat.” She heard Smee’s voice say. Caitlin saw him standing at the end of the bed watching over her so she had nothing to fear. Her eyes turned back to Liam who looked absolutely frustrated that she relaxed when she realized the two of them were not alone together.
“What sort of spell? Did I faint again? I’ve been feeling ill for about two weeks but I was sure it would pass soon.” Liam looked at her for a moment, wondering why she hadn’t said something before now if she had been feeling under the weather.
“Ye mean, this isn’t the first spell ye’ve had? Why didn’t you come see me for this, if ye thought somethin’ was wrong?” Caitlin just gave him a look before her eyes went down cast. Liam fell silent as it was uncomfortably clear she didn’t trust him anymore.
After a moment, Caitlin spoke softly, “Can you give me something to make the dizziness stop and the sickness go away.” Liam just starred at her. Was it possible? Even here in Neverland when most things always stayed the same? Even though the physical body does not age, if it is cut a scar appears when it heals. If someone is killed, then they die. If one does not shave his face everyday, a beard would grow.
“We . . . we’re going to have to wait for a bit. I don’t want to give ye the wrong remedy and make ye worse.” He needed time to explore a few things before he could be sure or give her a direct answer. “Just drink some water and take it easy for now misses. Ye’ll be feelin’ better after ye’ve had a little rest.” Caitlin gave a sigh. Rest? Again? It seemed rest, and sleeping made up more then 70% of her life. However, she had been feeling poorly, and perhaps he was right.
Smee made sure to hustle Liam outside of the Captain’s cabin before he exited, leaving her alone. The first mate turned and looked at the doctor. “What’s wrong with her?” He asked plainly.
“I can’t be sure yet. We shall have to wait a while and see.” Liam looked at Smee, seeing that the first mate didn’t exactly believe him. Stepping a bit closer to Smee, he said in a more definite tone, “I don’t know. What good would it do me to hold any information concerning her health? Do you think I want to see her die?”
“Ye can’t have her for yer self, perhaps ye think no one should.” Liam’s face darkened at the implication. He turned to leave without another world but Smee raised his hand halting his retreat. “Ye’ve proved yerself a fool more then once already doc. Learn from yer past mistakes . . . .don’t do it again.”
Liam jerked away from Smee’s grasp starring him in the eye, “I don’t want her to die, I don’t want her to suffer, and I wouldn’t withhold anythin’ that was life threaten where she was concerned. My life hangs by a mere thread and nothin’ more, and if I be right . . .she’ll need a doc around more than before.” Liam pushed his way past Smee, and headed back down below decks to be locked in his infirmary again.
Back on the island, Hook approached a large crowd of his pirates all gathered around gawking. What was it with these imbeciles? Each time something happened, they had to gather around it and stare, or when possible, poke at it and bet should it be a fight or contest. “Out of my way you putrid swine.”
Hook looked down to see the sight that had startled the pirates so. There on the ground, was a skull with two crossbones lying where the poor devils neck would be. The same symbol that was held on their pirate flag. Underneath that, lay the dagger that had been used to cut Caitlin’s hair, Captain Hook had seen that stupid little boy holding it in his hand while the other held up Caitlin’s golden locks like some sort of wild savage who had just scalped his prisoner. It was covered in blood, fresh blood. Although, whom or what the blood belonged to was uncertain. James narrowed his eyes upon looking at this sight. “There is evil at work about us.” One of the crewmen whispered to the others. James didn’t acknowledge the comment but he heard it.
“What a clever little miscreant. His messages are cryptic but clear. Perhaps one day he will find being illiterate is a hindrance and writing in script rather in old remains and blood is a bit less dramatic and is to be taken more seriously.” He rolled his eyes and stepped forward kicking the pieces of the message that was left away. Turning he looked at his men, “Get back to work! I want to return to the ship within the hour!” He shouted, as he headed back to his maps.
The pirates all looked around at each other, not entirely sure what was going on or what the message said but quickly scrambled to follow their Captain’s orders. James looked back at the mess left after he had destroyed it. “Damn you boy.” He growled under his breath. Now the whole of his crew would think that ‘the evil eye’ was casting its stare on them once more and looking for someone on which to place the blame.
Hook was growing tired of these endless games. Pan was, needless to say, a spoiled brat and he was only proving that with each new exploit he attempted. Had he not wished for those boys to die, he would not have abducted the pirate Captain’s wife. Instead of taking the consequences of those actions, he was trying to avenge an injustice that was his own doing. He knew now that the lost boys had finally gotten themselves pulled back together, and he would have to keep a sharp eye for whatever mischief was afoot.
It was growing dark when the crewmen arrived back at the Jolly Roger from a hard days work. Their captain had not let them have a moment’s rest, anxious to return to the ship. James started up the stairs to his cabin, but was stopped by his first mate. “Capt’n. I think there’s somethin’ ye should know about.”
Under the cypress trees on the island in there newest hide out, Peter and the rest of the lost boys lay on the dirt floor, as Pan drew out their plans. “Tink says she’s been all over the pirate ship, and there is no fairy to be found. We’ve already searched the rest of the island, so it must be that lady. She has to be the fairy, cast a spell on herself by Hook’s will. She’s not only broken the fairies law in Neverland, but she might have done it against her own wishes.”
Pan plunged his stick into the middle of the figure drawn in the soft mud floor of their hideout. “There is only one way to free her, which is the same way she is to be punished. Finish getting things ready. Then we can turn our attentions to Hook once more.” All the boys shouted and cheered as they got up and ran off to return to making weapons and armor.
Liam sat up hearing the board that was always placed across his door to keep him incarcerated being removed. As the door opened, Captain James Hook stepped inside looking at him coldly. Liam stood to his feet quietly keeping his eyes on the Captain. James walked in further, circling around him a bit as his eyes met the doctors gaze with a cold and icy stare. “I am told, that my wife . . .” Hook always insisted on referring to Caitlin this way on purpose when ever he was around Liam, as if to constantly remind him of who exactly she belonged to. “ . . . suffered from a spell today. You were called to see to her.” Hook’s eyes shifted to some instruments laid out on the table, looking them over. “Tell me, what was it you found that caused her current condition.”
Liam stayed silent for a moment, “I can’t be sure yet Capt’n. All there is to do is wait a while and see what develops.” Hook threw down the instrument turning back towards the doctor.
“Then by all means, my well-learned ships surgeon who is supposed to hold all the answers to the medical profession, enlighten me on your suspicions!” His eyes narrowed as Liam wasn’t quick to answer him. “If I find this, . . . lack of understanding is do to some roués to see her on a daily basis alone, I shall put into effect the sentence I spoke for you before!” He shouted.
“If what I think is wrong with her Capt’n . . . It will be far from my doing, it will be yers.” James eyes narrowed at the boldness of this foolish man’s statement. Here he stood, accusing Hook to his face of causing Caitlin some form of illness, when he would never intentionally do anything to harm her. His hook instantly found it’s away against the doctor’s throat.
“How. . .DARE you!” He roared looking into the man’s eyes, pure hatred and malice filling his own. “You of all people dare to accuse me of doing something to harm her!! YOU who left the ship knowing she might have been in some sort of peril, where life was at stake, and as it turned out. . . your silence nearly cost her what little was left of her life!!!” James took a deep breath through his teeth trying to control his anger. “Of all the people on this ship that could have had the knowledge which you possess, to heal illness, and mend broken bodies . . . some fate with an ill sense of humor appointed it to be you.” He growled, each word dripping with pure distain. He would like nothing better then to carve this man’s body into small pieces as he did the mermaids that were pulled onto the deck of the ship and questioned as to Caitlin’s whereabouts.
“Kill me then Capt’n . . . and ye will be the one left to try and find an answer to this new aliment.”
“YOU HAVE SOME IDEA AT THIS MOMENT!!, and I suggest if you value your life in any form or want a relatively quick death when the time comes that it finally befalls you, you divulged your knowledge!”
“There is no point in speculating about it Capt’n! I need time! I need to explore the possibilities and what actions are to be taken!!” Liam’s eyes narrowed looking at the Captain, unable to stop him before the words left his mouth. “If ye truly care for her, and do not keep her only for yer trophy to show the world as yers, ye will give me time.” Hook’s eyes flashed red, and he hooked the front of Liam’s vest and threw him across the room. The doctor slowly started to rise from the ground, shaking his head. James took a step towards him but forced himself to stop, breathing hard.
“I want an answer by tomorrow morning. If you do not have one by then, I will cut out that deceitful tongue of yours and feed it to the mermaids!” He shouted before walking out of the infirmary, slamming the doors behind him.
Liam stood up slowly, feeling the ache of his neck and another in his shoulder. At once he spit at the door were Hook had walked out. “I’ll tell her before I ever tell ye.” He cursed towards the door.
James made his way up to his cabin, and opened one of the double doors stepping inside. He paused a moment as he found Caitlin standing in the middle of their cabin practicing what she had learned with a dagger she found lying about. A smile swept his face as he watched her in silence, not wanting to stop her just yet, he closed the door slowly behind him so he didn’t make a sound.
Caitlin lunged forward as if she was fighting some worthy adversary, and then took two steps back blocking their advance. James eyes moved over her, as it was obvious she had been practicing for some time. He could see the glistening of perspiration on her face and across her cleavage. She had been coming along nicely in their daily lessons for the past weeks and all of her hidden talent and skill were starting to emerge.
Cat was too engulfed in concentration to realize she was no longer alone, otherwise she would have stopped swinging the knife about or at least been more careful. All at once she spun around and flung the dagger at the double doors that James was standing in front of. It flew through the air and just barely missed his face. Hook’s eyes moved to the dagger a moment. Caitlin’s eyes went wide as her hand clasped over her mouth muffling a slight scream. She almost killed him and was sure he would be angry with her for being so careless.
James eyes turned back towards her and at once he walked up to her and pulled her into his arms kissing her passionately. Caitlin was stunned, he had not done this in weeks and it seemed strange that he chose to do it now. Hook pulled back from her lips and started to trail hungry kisses down her neck to her shoulder, holding her against him with both arms wrapped about her waist. “James . . . James I almost killed you . . .” Caitlin said quickly wondering if he even realized what almost happened to him just a few moments before.
Hook took a deep breath before moving back to where he could look into her eyes, reaching up with his hand and running his fingers through her hair “You most certainly did.” He breathed pulling her into another feverish kiss. Caitlin was also out of breath but it was from her sparing she had been doing for the past hour.
James mouth continued to consume hers hungrily over and over again, as he started backing her up towards the fainting couch, his desk, the bed, which ever they ran into first. Caitlin was a little surprised, and his sudden onrush of passion was overwhelming to say the least.
As he moved from her mouth returning to the other shoulder he hadn’t quite gotten to yet, Caitlin whispered trying to regain her breath. “James . . . how was. . . was there enough supplies to fill the ship?” She asked weakly.
“Of course my dear.” He breathed deep, as they reached the fainting couch. He braced his bad arm behind her and lay her down laying over her with one swift clean move. “You shall have a special treat at breakfast tomorrow morning.” He breathed as he began to caress and kiss down her neck to her soft chest. “Strawberries, dozens of large, ripe, beauties . . . waiting to be devoured.”
Caitlin could feel him caress her breasts and suddenly suspected that he wasn’t talking about strawberries any longer. “James . . . umm, the weather has started to grow colder, do you think that there . . .there is a change of weather approaching?” James took a deep breath and groaned laying his head against her chest halting his explorations. It was obvious she wasn’t on the same page he was.
“The frustration I’m experiencing at this moment is excruciating.” He said through his teeth before lifting his head looking down at her. “You cannot honestly be interested in the weather of all things at this particular moment . . . can you?” Caitlin just looked up into his eyes torn in two directions, wanting to give in but something was holding her back. Hook wasn’t ready to give up on his quest quite yet, “Caitlin . . .it has been weeks upon weeks, upon weeks . . . and I can feel every single one as if it was a full eternity from dawn until dusk, and the nights even longer then the days . . . have you not suffered the same? . . .” He hoped the answer was yes so he could continue with the venture he started.
Caitlin just looked up at him in silence as a tear escaped her eye and slowly slid down her cheek. He winced slightly seeing this; the mood was quickly fleeing the room. He reached up with his good hand resting it against her cheek, as he wiped the tear away gently with his thumb. “I promise Caitlin . . . I promise I will not hurt you this time . . .” He said almost pleading for permission to continue.
