Kazel – hehehe. Edward will make his move soon, I promise. He’s going to start getting very mushy and sensitive all of the sudden. I can’t really tell you much right now, but read on! Thanks!
Amiko – Thanks. I don’t live in Detroit, but near there, so I’ve been to all those places too. I didn’t enjoy Frankenmuth that much, but the Sleeping Bear Dunes were cool. I love the Mackinac area; that’s why I decided to have a major part of the story there. I go there at least twice a summer. Do you like it up there? I had hoped but hadn’t really expected anyone to actually be from my state and read my story. That’s cool that you are! Thank you!
MoI – Thanks, glad I’ve hooked you! ;)
B Oots – Cool name. Thank you, I try to update often. :)
Richard frowned at the road. Raphael waited.
“I don’t think she would,” the werewolf said at last. “Why would she? She wouldn’t.” He paused. “Would she?”
Raphael shook his head. “It’s a very real possibility. She’s going on a trip, and she doesn’t take any of her close human friends, nor does she take any of the shapeshifters or vampires. Who does she take? Would you really enjoy going on a road trip by yourself?”
Richard nodded once. “I see your point, but after Catherine, Ronnie, us and the vamps, who’s left?”
Raphael shrugged, then turned in his seat to look at the crowded wereleopards in the back. They were actually dressed normally for once, all in jeans and T-shirts. Anita was constantly trying to make them dress like that, mostly because she wanted to stop how they slept around and basically pimped themselves out.
“Do you three know of anyone non-shifter or vamp that Anita would trust to bring on a trip?” the rat king inquired.
Cherry shook her head. Zane shrugged innocently. Raphael knew they were most likely trying to protect their leader–and themselves–from Richard’s wrath, so he stared hard at the weakest of the trio. Nathaniel glanced at them and then slowly nodded.
“There’s one guy she might trust….”
Edward and I decided to check in at a Super 8 motel that almost had a beachfront view before getting something to eat. I was right about the bridge–it was breathtaking in person. We got pizza and took it to a small park on the beach. Most beaches I’ve ever been to were by the ocean, so it was all white sand and tiny pebbles. Here, the sand was not white, but the color of sand in child play-boxes, and rocks at least the size of my fist strewed the expanse, especially at the waterline. I wouldn’t exactly call it a surf; it doesn’t make that thick white foam that ocean waters do. There were some thin, tall patches of grass here and there, far up the beach, but it didn’t add anything but a touch of brown.
“It’s getting dark,” Edward commented after we’d been sitting on a grey boulder for about an hour.
I nodded. “Yeah. I wonder if they light up the bridge.” I studied the brilliant colors behind the huge structure. “It’s really pretty.”
Edward surprised me then. “Yes, it is.”
I tilted my head at him. “You don’t normally say anything unless there’s a reason behind it.”
He shrugged. “Maybe I’m lightening up.” Then he smiled at me.
We took care of our trash properly and walked the small bit of beach right up to the bridge. There was a little museum underneath it. We agreed to visit it tomorrow and walked back the other way.
“So what do you want to do tomorrow?” he wondered.
“I think we should take the ferry to the island. Then we can rent bicycles and ride around the whole island. Maybe afterward we could pay to ride horses on some trails. It’s expensive, but we have the budget to cover it, I think.” He nodded. “Thought so. Then I want to take some pictures of the Grand Hotel. We should do some souvenir shopping, too. But the most important thing we’ll have to do is buy some real fudge.”
He laughed. Not his usual snickering I-know-something-you-don’t-know laugh, but a real laugh, full and joyous. I think he must have laughed like that as a kid.
“Agreed, I’ll buy you all the fudge you want.”
I started. “You’ll buy me?” I echoed.
He nodded. “Yeah. That is, if you don’t mind.”
Something in his eyes, something unfamiliar but pleasant, made me shake my head.
“I don’t mind, I just wondered why you’d bother. I mean, only boyfriends typically pay for all of their girl’s things.”
He stopped walking. I stopped and looked at him. He icy blue eyes were soft and full. He looked completely serious.
“I….” He licked his lips and tried again. “I don’t want to be Death to you, Anita. I don’t mind everyone else being afraid of me like that, but it bothers me when you’re afraid of me, possibly more than it should. I don’t want to be a cold-blooded killer to you. I want to be just Edward.”
I somehow knew what he was trying to say, amid all of the cryptic phrases. It’s still amazing to me that I understood; I rarely understand Edward’s code-speak.
“You aren’t Death for me, Edward.”
He smiled then. The next thing he did was the most astonishing thing he’d done yet; he leaned in and gently kissed me. I jumped, but gradually reciprocated. It wasn’t lustful and passionate like with Richard and Jean-Claude, so much that it was nearly closed-mouth, but it was one of the nicest kisses I’d had yet. When he drew back, I felt warm and contented. He was still smiling. Not one of his normal half-amused smiles, but a genuine smile. It was soft and sweet, almost like a child’s grin. I liked it. We linked fingers and continued walking, this time toward our hotel.
You know, they do light up the bridge at night.
That’s all for this round. Feedback?
