Chapter 5-The Cln
An
Anita parked around back of the Circus with the sun setting on their arrival. Both she and her mate were wondering why Jean Claude had specifically asked for Nathaniel to come. As the trio of Nimi-Ra, Nimi-Raj and wereleopard made their way down to Jean Claude’s parlour, Nathaniel found he had a suspicion that his presence had something to do with his dream.
When the group reached the bottom of the stairs, dark had fallen. Anita could feel the vampires rising and gathering around the room they were headed for. She started to get scared, fingering th Browning High-Power tucked into her shoulder holster for comfort.
Upon entering the room, Anita saw a vampiress sitting with Jean Claude on a sofa, contemplating the painting above the fireplace which depicted the scene from Greek mythology where Psyche gazes upon the sleeping Eros, for which Jean Claude and a perfect, angelic Asher had posed.
“Jean Claude, we have arrived,” Micah said, seemingly announcing their presence, not liking the tension hovering in the room.
“Anita, Micah, Nathaniel. Please sit. I would like to introduce you to Noelle. This is my human servant and her mate. I believe you already know Nathaniel, since you requested his presence. Anita and Micah are his Nimi-Ra and Nimi-Raj.” He waited while Anita sat beside him on the arm of the sofa, nearly bursting with the urge to question what was going on, knowing that she should hold her tongue. Micah sat at her feet waiting patiently for and explanation. Was still standing in the doorway, staring at Noelle.
“I thought you were a dream, that you weren’t real.”
“I told you, mon chou, je rechercherais de vous aujourd’hui. I would look for you today. I understand though. Come and sit while I bargain with you Master of the City.” Noelle smiled and sent Nathaniel waves of comfort and warmth with her mind, calming him and inducing him to sit at her feet. His head rested against her knee and her fingers tangled themselves in his silky auburn hair while she talked. “I have been asleep for a very long time, buried in the Earth. I came here in the year 1146 AD, at the beginning of the second Crusade. I was at Edessa when it fell to the Muslims. After that I fled, knowing that the coming times would be nothing but slaughter and blood shed. I built a ship and just sailed away, taking camels for food and water for the camels. I landed sherehere in what is now Virginia. I travelled and fed off of Natives until I was too bored to exist. So I found myself a nice place in the mountains, the Ozarks I believe, and buried myself there. I did not stir until a few years ago. Your conflict with the previous Master woke me and caught my interest. It took me awhile to drag myself back my my body and then become strong enough to venture out. I formally request permission to reside within your territory.”
Jean Claude stared at her for a few moments. He then turned to Anita, “Ma petite, if Noelle is willing,” he glanced up and then continues, “I would like for you to try and judge her age and power.
With a nod from Noelle, Anita sent her mind and power to the vampiress, and was shocked by what she found. “She is around 1300 years old, but the power she has... It nearly matches that of the Earthmover, perhaps exceeds it.” She stared at the other woman, her mouth hanging open. “She’s practically and infant compared to him, but her power is possibly greater then his...”
“My powers are not so flashy as his. Mine are for more practical things. And I offer my services and powers to you in exchange for permission to reside here.” Noelle raised an eyebrow at the other vampire, trying to sweeten the deal. Her hands trailed through Nathaniel’s hair, soothing the both of them, her fingers massaging the back of his neck. Anita noticed and felt a sharp stab of jealousy. She knew what it felt like to run her hands through that red silk mane, to smell the vanilla scent of him on her hands.
“You and I both know that you could take the city on the merest whim.” Jean Claude stated, while making it subtly seem a question, curious as to how she would react.
“I have no wish to be Master of a City. That position holds too much responsibility. I prefer to watch the doings of others, participating and interfering occasionally. If it is reassurance you seek, then I give you my word that what I say is true: I have no plots nor designs upon your position and have no intentions towards dethroning you. As I have said, if it is agreeable to you, I would prefer to reside in your court and make myself a resource and asset to you.” Noelle waited quietly for his answer, as still as only the old ones are, as if her flesh had turned to stone.
“It is a deal then. You may reside within my lands for as long as you wish and I may avail myself of your skills. Now on to the next matter. This is between you and the leaders of the pard, understand?” Jean Claulanclanced between the two parties. “Je ne pense qu’ils te permettront il revendiquer sans une bataille. Ne les tue pas ou ne les mutile pas, s’il vous plaît. Anita, Micah, please don’t do anything stupid.” And with those cryptic comments, Jean Claude left the room, sending in Damian, Anita’s vampire servant, and Asher, his second banana as Anita would call him. The two vampires took up positions by the fireplace, close enough to intervene if necessary, but far enough to give the illusion of privacy.
“What was he talking about? And how do you know Nathaniel? What do you want with the pard?”Anita demanded, not bothering to speak in a low voice, knowing that the other vampires would hear anyway. Anita was scared by the amount of powhe whe woman had, and her fear had turned to anger, something she could use and deal with.
“Last night, you probably felt me break away from my resting place, as metaphysically powerful as you are. I felt a mind searching for me, reaching out for me. As soon as I was able I made contact with that mind. I drew them into the space between the atoms, a void where everything and nothing is possible. There I met Nathaniel. I talked to him long enough to get his psychic scent and then sent him dreams. I gave him a choice. I could feel that he was unhappy.” Anita gave a start at this, her eyes slipping to Nathaniel who avoided her gaze. “So I offered for him to become mine. I promised him that no matter what he choose, I would always care for and protect him, see to his happiness, and seek vengeance should I fail in protecting him. He choose to be mine. I warned him that there was no going back. I c I come before his pard leaders, his Nimi-Ra and his Nimi-Raj, and formally make my claim to him.” During the telling of her story, Noelle’s fingers clenched in Nathaniel’s hair, the only sign of her anxiety. Nathaniel murmured and rubbed his cheek against her knee, showing her the feelings she conjured in him, sending them to her with his mind. She was touched by his sensitivity and caring, and smiled down at the wereleopard.
Anita was furious, gripped by a terrible rage, fueled by mind-numbing terror. ‘She will not take him from me. He was mine first. She can’t take him from me, from the pard. I won’t let her. And how dare he go behind my back and do something like this. Why didn’t he tell me that he was unhappy? But how did she claim him...?’ “How did you claim him?” Anita was nearly over the edge, already in the buzzing white static her mind became when she killed. Then she remembered. Nathaniel loved her, but only because she could protect him, dominate him and direct his life for him. And now he had found someone else to do what she would not, could not do. Did he love this woman? Grief hollowed her chest while Noelle explained her bond with Nathaniel.
“It is not dissimilar to the bond between vampire and human servant. Nathaniel and I are bound together mind, body and soul. We have a psychic connection, we can speak mind to mind if we wish, we know the state of each other’s minds, hearts and bodies, etc. the only difference between our bond and that between, say you and Jean Claude, is that though our bond is complete, he is not immortal. The only way to kill him before old age catches up on him is to cut out his heart. Neither blood loss, nor decapitation can kill him now. You could try to blow him up with a nuclear bomb, and he wouldn’t have a scratch on him.”
“I will not let you take him from us. We are his family. I will not give him up without a fight,” Anita said in a wooden, dead voice. All through their exchange, neither Micah nor Asher nor Damian had twitched a muscle or said a word. At the tone of Anita’s voice, Damian moved to her side and draped his arms around her shoulders, comforting and calming her.
Noelle seemed shocked. Anita smiled, taking grim satisfaction from thinking the other woman had expected no opposition. She was surprised when the blood-sucker said, “I had no intention of taking him from you. I fully intend to stay here with him and be a part of his life, whether he stays here at the Circus or remains in your home. It had not occurred to me to remove him from the pard. I only wanted to have our bond recognized as valid and meaningful. Whether you do so or not is your concern, for it shall exist anyway. I just thought having Nathaniel’s pard accept my claim to him would be best for him, so that it would avoid complications in loyalties and such.”
Anita glanced to Micah, silently asking for his decision. Upon receiving a brief nod, she took a deep breath and slowly let it out. “Fine. The pard recognizes your bond and respects it.” she seemed slightly resentful until she saw the look of pure joy on the faces of Noelle and Nathaniel.
The vampiress raised an eyebrow at her leopard. He grinned and dragged her out of the room, racing for the bedchambers, leaving the other four behind, mouths agape and cheeks blushing slightly.
Je ne pense qu’ils te permettront il revendiquer sans une bataille: I do not think that they will aloow you to claim him without a battle.
Ne les tue pas ou ne les mutile pas, s’il vous plaît: Don’t kill or maim them please.
