---------------------------------------------------------------------
“Time passed quickly.” Lucy looked over at Tumnus. “Didn’t it?”
The two barely spoke to each other over the past day and a half. They were both fighting with them selves. Tumnus would smile at her. She would smile back. They would both blush and look away again. The centaurs noticed it. Kale noticed it but didn’t say anything. He told his herd to shush about it too. They had enough issues to overcome without prying noses watching them.
“Yeah.” Tumnus chuckled nervously. “You can see the castle Cair Paravel from here.”
“I never noticed how big the castle was.” Lucy didn’t want to not talk to him! “Um so.” She looked around them before glancing back in front of her. “Y..you..said ..something the other day to me.”
Here it was. Tumnus froze and looked down quickly. ‘Breathe!’ He forced him self to stay calm. ‘Breathe!’ He knew she would ask. Why did he say that so soon!? He was smacking him self mentally. When he looked at her he knew why but the fact was that he said it!
“I did.” Tumnus stopped the horse. He was fidgeting nervously on his saddle. “I said lots of things the other day.”
“I think I mean something that you....specifically said to me.” She stopped her horse beside his and waved the centaurs on ahead. “I..thought..we could talk?”
“I didn’t mean to offend you if that is...what it did.” Tumnus breathed in slowly and exhaled. “I honestly didn’t. I..know I am..just a faun.”
“Tumnus!” She said his name scoldingly. “You are not just a faun.” Lucy dismounted the horse and sighed. “I..w..want to hear you say it again. I want to know if you meant it.”
“Of course I meant it.” Tumnus followed her lead and dismounted his horse. “I..would not say something to you that I did not mean.”
“So you...”She walked over to a grassy patch and sat, speaking still. “You...L..” Why was this so hard? She wanted to cry. This shouldn’t be hard. Just say it! “Love was it?”
“Yes.” He followed her over to the small grassy patch. Tumnus sat down in front of her so she could see his eyes. “I said..” He took a deep breath and released slowly. “I think I just may be in love with you.”
“You think?” She was trying to control her breathing. “Or..I..mean.” Lucy grunted and plucked a blade of grass up in her hand. “We have barely talked since..you said that.”
“I guess it is because I was afraid you would slap me for saying such a thing to you.” The faun smiled. “I was afraid of the possible rejection.”
“So..It is more than think?” Lucy looked up at him. Her heart was beating very quickly. She could feel it pounding in her chest. “Or..maybe..not anymore?”
“I know I am in love with you.” Tumnus touched her hand with his. “I have loved you from the day I first saw you.”
“You have?” She held his hand softly. “W..Why have you never..said anything to me?”
“I don’t know.” He sighed. “I tried a couple of times but it never came out right. I always got the idea in my head that I could never be good enough for you. You are a daughter of Eve and I am a simple Faun. You are a queen and I live in a ..”
“Tumnus.” She shook her head. “You should know better.”
“It was more than that. Your brothers and sister made it..hard.” He swallowed hard. “Please don’t take that the wrong way. It was just..that they..You four were always together and..King Peter was very protective of you. All of them were. It made me feel so small.”
“I know what you mean. They were very parental towards me.” She shook her head. “I know they loved me but sometimes it was very hard to deal with them.”
“Lucy?” Tumnus scooted closer to her. He held both her hands in his. “I..you..I mean.”
“Yes Tumnus?”
“Lucy, I know it sounds fast but..I mean it. I love you.”
“I..”
She gasped. His lips were only inches from hers. She saw the tears in his eyes. She could feel him pulling her hands to touch his bare chest. His heart was beating just as impossibly fast as hers. Tumnus smiled and kept his gaze on her still.
“D..Do you..” He didn’t know how to ask her. “I..I have always felt..I mean..” He gahd! Inwardly. His thoughts screamed to just say it before he exploded! “I have always thought..maybe you..felt..the same about me.” Tumnus inched just a tiny bit closer. “W..what I’m asking is..Do..you love..me too?”
“Yes.” She whispered. Her lips pressed against his very, very softly.”I do love you.”
Tumnus’s heat burst from him and soared into the sky. He brought his hands up to cup her face within them. Her hands were left against his chest. His lips pressed harder to hers. Tumnus finally let him self relax and wrapped his arms around her to pull her closer. Lucy gasped again in surprise. She never kissed anyone before.
“Like sweet berries.”Tumnus pulled away so there was only a few centimeters between them. He could feel her hands still on his chest. “I love you.” He smiled. It came out easier. “I love you with all my being Lucy Pevensie.”
“I love you Tumnus.”
She smiled in return. Lucy leaned forward and kissed him softly again. Tumnus embraced her, leaning her back so she laid in the grass. He pulled away slowly and stroked his hand along her cheek. He was admiring her every curve and feel.
“You..could really love...a faun?”
“Yes Tumnus. I have always loved you. When I saw you turned to stone by that witch..” She shook her head. “I cried because I thought I would never see Mr. Tumnus again. I just..never..admitted it to my self I suppose.”
“We are both guilty of that.” He propped his self up beside her so he leaned on one elbow while his other hand stroked over her cheek and onto her arm. “You are..so beautiful.”
“Thank you.” She blushed even now at his words. It was because he meant them that she turned so lovingly red. “Tumnus?”
“Yes Lucy?”
“I..you..I mean..”She chuckled. “I have never kissed anyone before you.”
“You are the only person I have ever kissed. You are the only one I have ever wanted to kiss.” He let one of her curls wrap around his finger. He was combing them through the silky tresses. “You have..always been..my reason to breathe.”
“T..Tumnus.” He was being so sweet and loving to her. “You..take my breath away.”
“Only to have mine stolen away by you. So I guess it means we breathe for each other.”
“Yes.” She chuckled. “You really are a charmer.”
“Only because of you. When I am around you there is nothing that I can not accomplish.” He held her hand, lifting her up slowly so they were both sitting again. “One thing is for certain. What ever it is that I accomplish, I want to do it together with you. It is all I have ever wanted.”
“I want to see where this takes us as well.” She stroked his cheek with her other hand. “Right now though.” Lucy smiled. “I think we should get to Cair Paravel. We have left poor Kale and his men waiting for forever.”
“You are probably right about that.” He nodded and stood. Tumnus helped her to stand along with him. “I suppose we got side tracked.”
“Again.” She laughed quietly. “We have been getting side tracked this whole time I think.”
“Yes.” He grinned. “I don’t think Kale minded.”
“Probably not. I think I caught him grinning at us a few times.” Lucy turned and smoothed the back of her gown. “I think he understands.”
“You look fine and you are most likely correct. He is a very patient man from what I have seen.”
“Yes he is and thank you.” Lucy smiled as she walked over to her horse. “You have a bit of grass on your legs though. Might want to brush that away.”
“Ah!” He laughed, shaking his head. “Thank you.” He leaned down and brushed away the grass that was in the fur. “Fur, can’t do a thing with it.”
“Tumnus?”
“Yes?” He glanced over. She was mounting her horse at the moment. “You have that curious look in your expression again.”
“Well kind of.” She looked thoughtful. “I was just wondering about some of Narnia’s past. There were other daughters of eve and sons of Adam here?”
“From what I know of, yes.” He mounted his horse finally, which was considerably difficult considering his hoofed feet. He did however, manage to do it and quite gracefully. “Although It is hard to remember all of the old tales. Aslan would be the one who remembers them the most. Through out it all, he has been with Narnia for as long as she has been around.”
“Well I was wondering if any of the others tried to stay. None of them ever tried to live and have families here?” She had no idea why she never thought about this before but it seemed a relevant thought.
“I am not sure.” It was an odd query but he could see the pont of the idea.”There has been so much time that has passed. It is hard to say or remember everything. The fauns have so many old tales and legends that it is hard to know what might have been true and what was just a dream.”
“I would like to hear some of them if you..wished to tell me them.”She smiled softly. “Just because I want to learn more about you. You tell your stories and play your flute with such passion that I can see you in all of it.”
“I could cry right now.” Tumnus nodded. “You know me so well already. You describe the things I have come to love with your own heart. I am moved Lucy Pevensie. I am moved very deeply.”
“You are crying.” Lucy could see the small droplets of moisture that escaped him. “I only spoke the truth of how I felt about you when you played and when you told me some of the stories.”
“You have a beautiful spirit my lady.”
“And you have a very noble heart Mr. Tumnus.”
The two smiled at each other. In that smile they could see care, love, concern, friendship and so much more. It was in them selves that they could see each other. Their relationship went beyond the physical and touched something much greater. Their souls were separate but together they were one. For a heart to know this? It was beautiful and very spiritual to see. Kale looked on quietly. He considered him self a very privileged man to be able to witness such a revelation between two hearts.
“Shall we go?” Lucy’s whisper was soft.
“Lead on and I will follow my lady.”
Tumnus was feeling very emotional, and rightfully so. His hearts deepest wish and desires were coming true. Lucy smiled so sweetly, so honestly. She almost forgot how to do this after losing her Brothers and sister. Her reasons and will had become hurt but now? She could smile again.
“To Cair Paravel.” Lucy chuckled and urged her horse onwards. The horse started off in a smooth trot. “And onto life.” She whispered.
Kale motioned to his men when he saw them coming. The centaurs gathered them selves together. Some stood from a needed rest and others came back from getting a drink. Tumnus followed Lucy and nodded. His sensitive ears were enough to pick up that small whisper.
“On to life.”
Tumnus whispered it him self. He trotted up so he could ride beside her. They soon joined the waiting group of Centaurs. Kale nodded to them each and motioned his men forward. His smile told Lucy and Tumnus that he didn’t mind the wait. Cair Paravel was not that far away after all.
“Kale?” Lucy still felt she needed to say something though. “I apologize for the delay. I realize you and your men must have a thousand other things to do. I just wanted to say I appreciate you escorting us here.”
“It was my honor to do so your majesty. The others agree with me.” He chuckled and kept walking ahead. “You are our noble and valiant queen.”
“Yes but the point is you could have said no or even gotten impatient and I would not have gotten mad.” Lucy sighed. “You mst remember that I care about all the people and I do not expect anything from them that I would not do my self.”
Tumnus shook his head and grinned. She would never win this argument with them. Her people did love her and most would sacrifice them self in her stead. She showed modesty however and that was a very respectable queenly trait. It made them love her even more. When he thought about it, he was very lucky. He could probably think of a hundred men that would love to be in his place. This was a place he was not about to trade either.
“Look there.” Tumnus blinked. There was someone on the steps of the great palace. Not just someone but it was the someone. “It is..”
“Aslan!” Lucy gasped. Her smile was wide. “H..He..”
“Aslan.”
Kale and all of his men spoke the name at once. They did not see the gathering people to the sides of them. Lucy dismounted and ran forward towards the great lion. Her arms flew around him and embraced him. He gave one of his deep chuckled and nuzzled against her. Lucy always respected and loved Aslan, as did every person in Narnia.
“Lucy.” Aslan stepped back from the hug to look at her. “You surprised me. I must admit that I did not expect you to stay.”
Tumnus approached slowly from behind. He knelt down to join the others in their homage to the lord of all Narnia. They were also knelt down to honor their queen.
“Yes sir I..” She looked around and gasped, as if just now noticing the people that gathered. “I..couldn’t follow.”
“Come.” Aslan said.
He turned and stared to walk inside the palace. “We can talk inside.” He gave the others a nod and slight motion with his paw. They all stood and backed away slowly. All except for Tumnus. He stepped forward with his head bowed. Lucy reached and grasped his hand. She would not leave him behind.
“Ah Mr. Tumnus. It is good to see you again my old friend.” Aslan turned just slightly. “Come, both of you. I expect you are both a little thirsty and hungry from such a ride.”
He walked inside. Lucy smiled and turned to face the others that had gathered. Tumnus stayed right beside her.
“Thank you kale. All of you..Thank You for being here.” She was filled with joy and hope when she saw how they looked at her. “I will see you all soon.”
She was worried deep down however. What if Aslan had come to send her away. What if she was supposed to follow Peter, Edmund and Susan? Had she gone against some act of fate that Aslan set in place by staying here? It really was his land. She was a queen by his grace.
“You look worried Lucy.” Tumnus pulled her along and inside slowly. “Your smile has faded.”
“I..am a little worried.” Lucy bit her bottom lip nervously. “Tumnus what if..he..is here to tell me I am to go?” She held his hand tighter. “I do not wish to leave you or Narnia.”
“We must trust in Aslan to know. He has never guided any of us wrong. Keep faith in your heart Lucy Pevensie and all will turn out as it should.” Tumnus was scared him self. He just did not wish to show it. “We must keep hope.”
“No matter what happens inside.” Lucy stopped for a moment and turned to look at him.”I Love you and I always will.” She looked up at him. “Nothing could ever make my heart forget you.”
“Lucy.” He leaned down and kissed her lips softly, lovingly. “Nothing will happen. I can’t let you leave me now, not when we...just..”
“Lucy? Tumnus?”
Aslan called for them. Both of their hearts were beating fast. It was not for a good reason but instead because they were worried what Aslan would have to say to them. Was their’s a love that was forbidden? It was true that no other sons or daughters from Lucy’s world had ever stayed before.
“Keep hope.” Lucy whispered. “Right?”
“Yes.” Tumnus took a shaky breath and nodded. “We must trust in Aslan.”
“Right so...Why am I scared?” Lucy was trembling just barely. “I shouldn’t be.”
“I am ...S..Scared because I don’t want to lose you.” Tumnus bravely took the first step for them. “We must go talk to him.” He tugged her gently. “We must Lucy.”
“I know.” She followed him reluctantly. He was leading her to the throne room where Aslan was waiting for them both. “I...know.”
“I love you..” Tumnus smiled. “Just thought I should tell you.”
It made Lucy smile to hear that. She sighed though when she walked into the throne room. Aslan was standing there beside two thrones? Wait, Cair Paravel had four thrones. Tumnus’s heart almost sank. The thrones only changed when the rulers changed. At least, this was what the old stories he was told depicted.
“Aslan.” Lucy looked up barely. “I..”
“Lucy Pevensie.”
Aslan spoke. Here it was. The moment of everything. She would die inside if he sent her away from here. Tumnus would crumble and wither away into nothing if he lost her. Both of them stood ready and waiting for what Aslan had to say. They could only hope that it was something good for them both.
