Author's Note: Wow! I hadn't realized that AFF was back up and running. That's great! Anyway, I lost my co author to this (I have bad taste in women/coauthors it seems. Stupid cheater *Grumbles*) Anyway, the postings will be slower, but enjoy!
Summary: As Cari's relationship develops with Nathaniel and Jason, a new hate group gives the weres of St. Louis trouble while a figure of recent vampire lore, Fire and Ice visits the city, making a wager between Jason and Asher all the more interesting.
This story, unlike the prequel, is not a PWP... There IS plot. Gasp, I know. We also have some new characters. Please read, review, and enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own any of LKH’s characters or plot related ideas (like she has actual plot... or much of it). I DO own the original characters in this story and the ideas and plot therein said story. Thank you.
The hunt... It was the best part of her job. It had been a month since her last kill, and Riley had been getting anxious. Pent up anger, her ass... She needed a good fuck, but since that obviously wasn't going to happen, she might as well kill someone. Smirking at that interesting thought, Riley ran a hand over the throwing knives at her belt line. She had been waiting and watching for nearly two hours now. She knew her hit would be leaving soon, since the club closed at 3am.
Finally, she saw him. This should be interesting. He should have laid off the fatty foods and gotten more exercise. He wouldn't be able to run more than a block without keeling over. The chubby man seemed sober for all the hours he'd spent in the bar. Riley waited till he was just past her before stepping out of the shadows. She had taken the time to change before coming out tonight. Her black leather flare pants were fit with throwing knives at the belt and suede lacing down the sides. She wore a black leather halter top that cut off just below her breasts and her red hair hung loose down her back. The overall effect... seductive and deadly. "Carmichael..." The name was said just loud enough for the man to hear.
Joseph Carmichael froze, then slowly turned. He'd felt the eyes watching him... felt the danger... He should have known it was coming... double dealing... or triple dealing, as he was doing, was bound to get him killed at some point. Realizing his stupidity at simply standing there, he turned once again, and began to run.
Asher froze in his contemplation of the moon, nearly full, as he heard something. Looking up, he saw of all people, Joseph Carmichael, the man who handled Jean-Claude’s funds running down the street. Dieu, what...?
Riley smiled as she watched the man take off. He would tire soon. She turned down another back alley and walked as the man ran. Standing in the shadows, she watched Carmichael round the corner. Pulling one of her throwing knives, she threw it, quickly hitting her target... She never missed. The man fell to the ground as the blade sank deep into his calf. Riley pulled another knife to throw and froze as she saw Asher enter upon the scene. Shit! The whole reason she hadn't entered the club was because of him. She'd put enough distance between her and the club. Why was he here?! Riley backed into the shadows and waited to see what would happen... either way this man would die.
Asher glanced around before hurrying to Joseph Carmichael's side, sending a message to Jean-Claude so that the master of the city might send help.
"A... Asher... they..." Joseph Carmichael shook as the vampire pulled the blade from his calf, causing him to scream.
"Shush, Mon Ami... be calm." He looked around for any sign of the attacker.
Riley sighed inwardly. She had little patience for someone who disturbed one of her killings, but somehow she thought that harming Asher would piss Jean-Claude off, and as much fun as it would be to go to battle with a master vampire, Riley really didn't feel up for it... Not to mention the fact that she kinda didn't want to hurt Asher. Okay, let's just leave that little fact unmentioned.
She had to get Asher away from Carmichael if this was to work without scorching him too. Riley took one step closer, still staying in the shadows so that she could not be seen. She was close enough to the light, however to get it to reflect of her belt and blades. This was getting risky and she calculated in her head how she could pull it off and get out of there without getting caught. If she could get Asher away from Carmichael, she could use her own power to create flames on his body. It was one of her gifts. She was pyrokinetic, but she could also start fires without touching the person or object. When she had a plan formulated, she moved slightly, causing the light to reflect of her knives.
The vampire's eyes lit on the glint. "Stay still, Joseph." Asher took flight, soaring immediately toward where he had seen the glint.
Joseph Carmichael cried out in fear as he realized he'd be left alone. "Ash-"
The words never finished making their way out of the man's mouth, but instead turned to shrill screams as scorching flames covered his body. Riley turned and ran down the ally she'd come from. There was a manhole that lead beneath ground there. Reaching her destination, Riley knew that she didn't have time to get it open with her hands, but maybe... just maybe... She popped the knife in the toe of her boot out and worked to pry the manhole cover off as she turned towards where Asher would soon be coming from, letting flames dance along the skin over her arms. The lighting was perfect. Something finally was going her way. The way the light fell cast shadows across her face, leaving her knives glinting and the flames on her arms standing out oh-so-slightly in the darkness. The only other feature that was even slightly noticeably was fiery red of her hair.
Asher paused to gape at the body, but within seconds, he was on the chase again, running into the alley after the murderer. Looking up, Asher stilled as he saw the woman there. The woman of their legends, despite her most recent appearance in their lore. Fire and Ice. She was bending over something, flames dancing over her arms in a warning.
Riley's breath caught. Damn. Why did Asher have to be so sexy? She hated thinking of his looks when she was supposed to be trying to get the cover of this hole. What would he do? She saw him staring at her as she worked to get the cover off the hole with her toe knife. Thank God for the strong blade. But it still took a few moments to get it just right so she could remove the cover. She held her breath, thanking her lucking stars that Asher could not see her face or get her scent over the burning flesh in the next isle over.
Try as he might, Asher could not make out the woman's face. All that he could see that distinguished her other than the flames was her fiery hair. "Dieu-"
Riley managed to finally get the cover off the hole. As she did, she opened her arms wide and let fire burst forth filling the entire end of the ally. Asher would be unharmed, but other than that, everything would be torched. When the flames died, Riley was gone, but not before Asher saw long locks of red and a sparkle of amber eyes.
***********
Riley wasted no time in getting back to Tailor Made. She'd stayed underground as much as possible so that she couldn't be tracked. Luckily, she hadn't needed to cut through the worst section, just empty tunnels. However, now as she enter the apartment, cobwebs were caked to her hair and the God awful stench of sewer clung to her. Shower... must get shower... Riley headed toward the bathroom without one thought as to where Cari might be.
Cari stepped out of the bathroom, finishing belting her robe around her. Needless to say, after her phone call, she'd needed a shower. Now... An over whelming, putrid scent filled her nose, and she struggled not to gag. "What the- Riley! What the hell happened to you?"
Sighing Riley looked Cari over. "Let's just say my night didn't go as planned..."
"Uh huh. Why do you smell of scorched flesh and the sewer?" The werepanther crossed her arms over her chest, quirking a brow.
"Can we talk about this after I take a shower?" Riley gave pleading eyes. "I smell like shit... Literally."
"No, Riley." Cari wasn't in the mood to wait.
"I was in the sewers, that’s why I smell like this." Riley was getting impatient. That happened a lot with her. "You were busy.... so I went out for coffee, met Edward, was given a job. It didn't go quite as I planned." The last statement was said faster than normal and in a voice that made it sound like every day news.
Cari's eyes darkened, and this time not with desire. "Oh?"
"Oh what? It's not a big deal. It just didn't go as planned. The guy is still dead, though." Riley leaned back against the wall with a blank look on her face.
"Who was it?" An ebony brow raised. Cari's voice was calm. Very calm.
"I don't think it really matters who it was." Riley could tell that this job upset Cari. She continued to lean against the wall with a blank look on her face. Never had she ever looked so much like Edward.
Cari stared at the other woman. "Riley, you promised me you wouldn't take any jobs while on this vacation. You know that in some way I'm connected to most of the people in the city. Now, I'm asking nicely. Who was it?" Her voice lacked emotion. If the assassin wanted to play this game, so could Cari, whether or not she herself was a killer or not.
"Joseph Carmichael." Riley sighed. "And I couldn't just pass it up. That man was worth a pretty penny, Cari."
"Joseph Carmichael? As in the VP of Mytel banks Incorporated?!"
"Yes."
"Riley..." Cari took a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she counted to ten. "You do know that he's the man Jean-Claude does his banking business through?"
"I do... I'm sure the company will find another man to be Vice-President." Riley shrugged. "Now can I please take my shower? I'm stinking up the whole apartment."
"Indeed. Enjoy your shower, Riley." Cari moved, walking into the bedroom and taking care to shut the door quietly behind her, no matter how much she longed to slam it.
Rolling her eyes Riley walked into the bathroom and closed the door. She would try talking to her again after her shower.
When she had finished her shower Riley, went to Cari's room. Softly she knocked on the door. "Cari?"
Cari looked up from her sketchbook and the new design she was working on. "Yes?"
"Listen, I know you are upset about this, but you need to know the facts." Riley explained as she entered.
"Fine. Explain."
"Cari, This job gave me a million dollars. That's a lot. Can you imagine make $1,000,000 in one night?" Riley sat on the edge of the bed.
Cari's fingers tightened on her pencil before she continued sketching. "Yes. I can. I can also imagine Jean-Claude somehow finding out you're linked to it... maybe through a witness... And he knows you're linked to me. I can imagine him killing you... and taking his business from me. The business that is the entire reason Tailor Made is a success." Cari knew that sounded callous... She loved Riley, she really did, but at the same time, she also knew that Riley could take care of herself and was the least of her worries.
"There's no way they can trace it back to me, and the only person who saw me at all only saw enough to know it was Fire and Ice who made the kill. They won't even be able to trace me through other assassins since none of them know who I really am."
Placing her pencil carefully on her night stand, Cari looked at the other woman. "The point, over all, is that you promised not to do any jobs while on vacation. You've also sworn to me repeatedly that you wouldn't endanger my business in the slightest way. What do you want me to say?"
"I haven't endangered your business. You have no control over what I do Cari. Jean-Claude would know that. This guy wasn't even an extremely key person to him. I've had a lot of pent up energy in me; that's why I took the job. If I recall clearly, you were the one who invited me out here when you heard I was taking a vacation. I can't pass up a flat mil. job even if it is my vacation. I also never promised or swore I wouldn't take a job while out here. What I said was that the only way I would even think of taking one is if it was extremely worth my while. This paid good and was a hell of a lot of fun." Riley fought not to scowl. She loved Cari, but some things the other woman would never understand about her. "I would never make a promise that I didn't know 100% I could keep."
Cari rose from the bed, shutting her sketch book and placing it on her dresser before looking at the clock. "If you don't mind, I'm going to go to bed early. Good night." She sat on the edge of her bed once more, before laying down and cuddling beneath the blanket.
"Fine, and it's 3am.... so I wouldn't call it early." Riley retorted. If Cari wanted to act like this, let her. She didn't need to coddle her, and she certainly was not about to apologize for doing her job. She would make sure that no bad would come to her or her business. "I'll sleep on the couch. Night." Turning, she walked out of the room shutting the door behind her. Couch...ha! She was so wired from the kill, then the argument, that she wasn't going to get to sleep till at least noon.
