Chapter Five
I wasn’t surprised that Emmett had apologized for his behavior shortly after I had told Edward that I wouldn’t come over anymore. He’d waited. Edward and I had needed to make a stop at the house, for what I wasn’t sure, to me it was nothing more then a set up. Once we pulled up he came out shortly after Edward went inside and asked that I forgive him and his immature behavior. Three weeks later I found myself sprawled out across one of the white couches at the Cullen’s house. Alice sat cheerfully at the coffee table writing down details for the wedding and slyly Edward had slipped away to speak with Carlisle about something of importance, leaving me alone to deal with Alice. Emmett and Jasper sat on another couch in front of the TV watching reruns of Trading Spaces.
Alice looked up at me with coal black eyes, which reminded me that Edward needed to feed again, and smiled at me. Her excitement dance in her eyes and lit up her face. She was clearly overjoyed to be worrying about the wedding plans. “Bella, what kind of flowers do you want at the wedding and reception?”
“I thought we talked about this already,” I muttered tiredly. We’d been at wedding planning all morning long and I’d forgotten half of the things we’d talked about.
“You did, and you said to let you think about it,” Jasper explained easily.
I didn’t answer right away, I hadn’t thought about flowers at all. But then my favorite flower popped into my head and I smiled, proud of myself, “Lets have scarlet and gold lilies. I love lilies and they’ll match the bride’s maid’s dresses.”
I asked Rosalie if she would like to be a second maid of honor in my wedding. She giggled at my silliness and explained that you can only have one maid of honor at a wedding but she would be more then happy to be a bride’s maid. I was about to agree with her obvious knowledge of weddings, but Alice had interjected quickly.
“It’s Bella’s wedding Rosalie; if she wants two maids of honor then there will be two maids of honor.” I put up a hand to argue that it really didn’t matter either way, as long as Rosalie was involved, but Alice cut me off. “Bella, a woman is allowed to run her wedding any way she wants. It’s a sweet thought that you would ask both of us to be maids of honor, that way we can get matching dresses.”
“Doesn’t that mean that Edward will need two best men?” I had questioned.
“I suppose so, but that’s fine, both Emmett and Jasper will be best men.” Alice said as if it were no big deal at all.
“Well who will hold the rings then?” I asked quickly.
“That’s easy; Emmett has the habit of losing things. So we’ll let Jasper hold them.” Rosalie said with a smile.
Alice’s voice brought me out of the thought, “Perfect of course! I’ll see about lily corsages and bouquets too. We can get yellow lilies for Rose and me and then you’ll carry white lilies. How does that sound?”
I sighed and tired to picture it. The description really did bring a lovely image to mind. “It sounds beautiful of course Alice.”
“Doesn’t it? Your wedding is going to be amazing.” She promised with a sincere expression. Quickly she turned back to her notepad, “Oh, Bella, have you purchased a gift for Edward yet?”
“No I haven’t, I planned on going to Seattle or Port Angels in a week or so.”
“Alright, I’ll go with you. That way you’ll be safe and Edward won’t worry.” She said simply.
“You can’t, I need to buy presents for you and Rosalie as well.” I protested. I had planned on buying something for the girls and the best men too just for attending. I also needed to get guest presents too. Shoot, the next week or two looked busy for me.
“I know what all you have left to do Bella; we can get all of the gifts bought and kill three birds with one stone. Not pun intended either. Oh shoot, I forgot about getting the doves! Alright, so we’ll need to go to a pet store as well.”
“Alice we don’t need doves, isn’t that a little mean? I mean you get these birds that are tame and then you let them go? What if they don’t know how to take care of themselves?” I asked thoughtfully.
“If you’d rather not have doves then that’s fine, but it’s sort of like an old tradition though. We get those for Rose’s weddings all the time. You release them right when the bride and groom are leaving for the reception.” Alice explained. I looked at her for a few moments and realized that she wasn’t going to let me win this.
“Can you at least get trained doves? That way they come back?” I inquired as a lame attempt to win the argument.
“No Bell, you can’t get trained doves. They’ll be fine, I promise.” Alice assured me comfortingly.
“Alright, if you say so then it must be okay.” I sighed and looked at the TV.
“Okay, one more question, as far as seating in the wedding and reception; where should I put Charlie and his date?” Alice questioned quickly.
“Date,” I snorted with laughter, “Charlie won’t have a date.”
“Oh, well he reserved for two people so, where should I put them?
“He really reserved for two people?” I asked in shock, who could Charlie know that he would want to bring to the wedding?
“Yes, my question is should I put them next to Renee and Phil or not?”
I thought about it for a moment, “Well if you don’t put them next to my mother then he will probably want to sit with her and do it anyways. So, put them next to each other.”
She went back to jotting things down again. I took the opportunity to get up and go to the bathroom. I flipped on the light, the fan came on too, and then closed the door behind me. I sat down and peeked at my underwear. Crap, still nothing! I thought to myself worriedly. I relieved myself and washed my hands in the sink. Pausing, I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I looked even paler and slightly upset.
Seven days, it had been seven days and still I hadn’t gotten my period. Normally it would have started by now. My body almost always stayed on the same schedule. Maybe I was too stressed? With the rapid approach of the wedding, Alice had been hounding me for last minute details. My stress levels could have easily thrown my schedule off, it happened to women all the time. There wasn’t anything wrong with me; I wasn’t going to die or anything. The last thought had barely left my mind when I remembered what Esme had told me, that vampires could get pregnant. It was rare but it happened all the same. I really couldn’t be pregnant we’d done it…how many times had we done it? I felt a sinking feeling in my gut and panic set in. Quickly flipping off the bathroom light I walked out into the living room to join the other three.
The TV show was coming to an end and Emmett was looking through the channels. He clicked on one and said, “Ahhh, the miracle of life, such a beautiful thing.” I starred at the screaming lady the screen and felt as if I were going to throw up. Alice said something to me and I didn’t hear it.
“What Alice?” I gasped out breathlessly.
“I asked why you keep running to the bathroom ever five minutes. Hey, are you okay?”
She questioned worriedly, having seen the look on my face.
“She’s nauseated, are you alright Bella?” Jasper asked.
“Yes, yes, I’m fine thank you. I just need to speak with Alice.” I got up not waiting for her. Carefully I stumbled out of the door and onto the porch. She followed behind me without asking why. I looked at her and tried to find the right words. Finally I gave up and started talking, “Alice, what I’m about to tell you needs to remain a secret. You can’t even think about it because I don’t want Edward to know. Alright?”
“Should we walk away from the house some?” She asked quickly. I shrugged and followed her out into the middle of the clearing in the yard. When we stopped I turned to her and swallowed loudly.
“Umm…Alice…I’m sort of late.” I muttered. I was scared that my suspicions might be right. What would Edward say if I was right?
“Late for what?” Real wonder played on her face. Of course she didn’t know what I was talking about. She was at least eighty-six years old and she’d never lived with anybody who might use the expression.
“My period, it’s late.” I explained frantically.
She looked at me for a few moments as if she still didn’t understand. A series of emotions played on her face at once. She was happy, curious, surprised, and upset. “Let’s go and speak with Carlisle.”
“I don’t want to talk to anybody unless I know its true Alice.”
“Okay, well let’s go to the store and buy a few home pregnancy tests.” She turned and walked toward the house excitedly.
“Wait, what are we going to tell Edward?” I followed her to the door and into the house. She thought about it for a moment and turned to the boys in the living room.
“Jasper, Emmett, when Edward comes out here looking for us tell him that we had to do some planning that was private. We’ll be in town for a while and then we’re going to go to Charlie’s to talk out the details. We’ll be back a little later, if he needs anything have him call me on my cell phone.” With an angelic smile she danced over to Jasper and gave him a heartfelt kiss good-bye. Then she turned to me and pulled me toward the garage.
I’d never ridden in Alice’s Porsche before, but we’d both been in one during our visit to Italy. I slid into the comfortable seat and listened to the car purr to life. She smiled and put on a CD that I didn’t know. It was some sort of rock group with woman singer. She sung with it and it actually sounded like a very good group.
“I’m ashamed of all my somethings!” Alice yelled and played the air-drums.
“Alice, who is this?” I yelled over the music.
She flashed me a bright smile and shouted, “It’s a group called Flyleaf.”
“Oh! They sound pretty good actually! Alice, where are we going to go to get the pregnancy tests?”
“The store in town. We’ll get a few of them and then go to you dad’s he’s working so it’ll be fine.” Alice said turning down the music. We were flying toward Forks in nothing more then a yellow blur. I bit my lip and gripped the door handle.
Less then five minutes later we were walking through the doors of the store. Rain had soaked both of us and we had to talk carefully on the slippery floor. Alice drug me toward the aisle that had person products like tampons, toothpaste, and condoms. On the far end of the aisle were the pregnancy test. Alice carried the store arm basket and hurried to them. There were so many stacked on the shelf that she didn’t know which ones to pick. Out of nowhere she started throwing one of each kind into the basket.
“Do you really think that all of those are necessary?” I asked with wide eyes. I was worried that somebody might see us and what we were purchasing. I repeatedly looked about us for anybody that could be watching.
Alice took my hand and pulled me toward the registers, “You can never be too prepared, better safe than sorry right?”
I let her pull me through the line and I even let her pay for the tests that were far more expensive then I thought they would be. We rain through the rain and jumped into the car. Alice turned the key in the ignition and slammed on the gas. A few onlookers were shocked by Alice’s hurry and I sunk farther into the seat. In a flash we were sitting in front of Charlie’s house. I took the key from the eve and unlocked the door. We walked through the door and tossed our jackets on the couch. The bag of tests was in my hand.
“Hurry Bella,” Alice rushed me up the stairs and into the bathroom.
“Alice, I don’t even have to pee!” I exclaimed.
“Just go Bella. I’ll wait for you out here.” She ran a hand through her short spiky hair and leaned against the wall. I bit my lip and shut the door. I few seconds later I heard a knock. “Bella, here is a Dixie cup. Pee in this and then you can dip the tests into them”
I cracked the door open and took the paper cup from her hands, “Thanks.”
Ten minutes later I still wasn’t able to go and I shouted to Alice.
“Turn on the sink!” She suggested quickly. Sighing I turned on the sink and waited. Finally I was able to go and I was proud of myself for getting some of it into the cup.
“Alright, Alice, now what do I do?”
“Can I come in?” She questioned before coming in.
“Sure.” Alice came into the door and looked at all of the tests stacked on the counter. I had them all popped open but otherwise untouched. She grabbed the nearest one from the counter. Pulling out the pregnancy test she handed it to me and began reading the directions. I waited impatiently for her to finish. She looked over at me with the test in hand and smiled apologetically for making me wait.
“This one says to pee on the end for three second. Then is takes six minutes for the results to show up. So I guess you can put it in the cup for three seconds and then let it sit. Make sure that you put the cap back on, it says that you need to put the cap back on.” She’d picked up another box and had started reading the instructions. I put the absorbent end into the cup and waited. “Bella do you happen to have an eyedropper?”
“No I don’t think we have one, why?”
“Because this one is supposed to have one but it’s not in the box. Bella three seconds!” She exclaimed almost causing me to knock over the cup. I pulled it out and placed the cap back on it and then set it aside. Instantly there was a new one in my hand. I took a plastic eyedropper from Alice’s hand and lifted a brow.
“I thought we didn’t have an eyedropper in this one.” I questioned looking at the cheap clear tube.
“Oh, we had two of those so I stole the eyedropper from the other box. With this one you have to put five drops in the little hole and then wait seven minutes.” I nodded and did as I had been instructed; carefully I filled the dropper up and then dropped five drops into the shallow hole. Carefully I moved it away from my makeshift work area and waited for Alice to give me more directions. “Here, this one you dip into the cup for five seconds and then we wait for seven. That one’s kind of cute; it’s got a smiley face on it.”
“I don’t care if it’s cute or not Alice lets just get these done. How many more do we have to do?”
“Six.” She said and started reading the directions for the next.
Completely forgetting the first few tests, I kept following the instructions and eventually all of the tests were done and sitting on the counter. Alice had advised that we wait to look until all of the tests were done developing and we both made our way into my room to sit out the wait. Minutes ticked by slowly and the only noise in the room was both of our breathing. We tried not to concentrate on the watch, and eventually our thoughts drug us elsewhere. We both jumped when Alice’s cell phone rang.
“Hello,” She asked even though I knew that she was certain it was Edward. She glanced at me a few seconds and listened, “No Edward, everything fine. She’s sitting right here. No she isn’t sick, Jasper was wrong. I know he isn’t ever wrong, but then again neither was I and look what happened a while back. We didn’t tell you because you were busy with Carlisle, plus we’re just doing some planning. You would have come ruined our girl time. Yes.”
She handed the silver phone to me and I put it to my ear. Clearing my throat I said, “Hi Edward.”
“Bella are you alright?” Edward’s voice came through the receiver concernedly.
“I’m fine.” I’m just waiting for nine pregnancy tests to finish so that I can see if I’m going to be having a baby, I thought to myself hysterically.
“You don’t sound fine, you sound worried, where are you?” Again his voice was filled with worry. He doesn’t know what worried is, I reflected angrily. He was sitting at his house and the only thing he was worried about was where I was. I was worried about the fact that I might be PREGNANT!
“We’re at Charlie’s,” I murmured ignoring Alice’s frantic head shaking from side to side.
“I’ll be there in a few minutes. I love you,” He didn’t even wait for me to say anything back. He’d hung up on me.
“Come on, it’s been more then ten minutes. I’m positive all of the tests are through by now.” Alice drug me from my room toward the bathroom. My stomach turned threateningly and my fear had caused my nerves to tie in knots. My pulse sped up and we walked into the bathroom. I plucked the nearest test from the counter and groaned. Positive, the test had two lines and that meant it was a positive. Alice peeked over my shoulder and then into the mirror at my face.
“Is this a good thing or a bad thing?” Her hand was on my back rubbing in useless circles. The way a mother comforts a child when they had a scary dream.
“I don’t know!” I grabbed one test after another until I had looked at them all. Each had stated that I was clearly pregnant. “Alice can I have a minute alone?”
“Will you be alright?”
“Yes, please, just a minute?” I pleaded still in shock from the unplanned pregnancy.
“Alright, Edward will be here soon. I’ll be just outside.” Was all that she said as she closed the door behind her. Quickly I locked it and put my back to it, sliding slowly down to sit on the floor.
The shock began to fade away and my fear turned into a hideous monster. I was pregnant. Edward and I had made a child together. What would he think about it? What did I think about it? My mother found herself in the same situation when she was about my age. She and my father had decided to keep me and then they spit up. I wasn’t even one hundred percent sure that I wanted to get married. I was eighteen, getting married and pregnant. Hot tears of uncertainty and fear welled up in my eyes and I began to sob uncontrollably. Over my sobbing I head Edward’s raised voice yelling at Alice.
“I thought you said she was alright!” He bellowed angrily at her. He banged his knuckles loudly against the bathroom door. “Bella, sweetheart, let me in please.”
“She was alright when you called.” Alice insisted defensively. The anger in Edward’s voice didn’t seem to bother her a bit.
“What happened then, Alice?” He snarled at her.
“I can’t tell you Edward, you’ll have to speak with Bella.” She told him modestly.
“Why the hell not?” He bit out. His voice had evened out enough that he wasn’t yelling anymore, but the bitterness was still there.
“It’s for her to tell you.”
“Bella, please open up. I need to know that you’re alright.” Desperation filled his voice as he spoke to me. I sighed and wiped the tears off of my cheeks. I stood up and unlocked the door pulling it open.
“What’s the matter?”
My eyes drifted to the tests on the counter. He followed my gaze and saw what it was that I was looking at. Picking one up he looked at it and realization dawned on him, “Bella, you’re pregnant? How?”
Though tears were streaming down my face again I worked up the energy to be sarcastic, “Well when a man and a woman love each other very, very much…”
“I’m being serious. I thought this very rarely happened.” Edward said looking down into my face sternly.
“Well you know, you are with me. Unusual, unthinkable, impossible, disastrous things are always happening to me. Every day of my life.” I stated grumpily.
I could see that he was trying to guard his expression. Getting it under control he asked, “What do you think about this?”
“I’m overwhelmed. I didn’t think this could happen and I’d come to terms that we wouldn’t be able to have kids. This is like some sort of bad omen! My mother and father when through this very same thing and they split up when I was six months old. We’re only teenagers and we’re going to have a baby. How will I be able to change if we have this baby? I’ll need to stay human to take care of it. We age and our child doesn’t?” I babbled randomly.
“Sweetheart, this isn’t a bad omen. It’s just a coincidence. That’s all, there is nothing else to it. We aren’t going to do what Charlie and Renee did. They fell out of love and split up. We’re not going to split up, we’re going to get married, and we are going to love each other unconditionally for the rest of eternity.”
“What about the change? I won’t be able to change when I’m pregnant will I?” I looked down at the test in his hand and sighed heavily. All of my planning, all of the persuasion, everything I had worked on was slowly slipping out of my grasp.
“I’m not sure; we’ll have to ask Carlisle about that. He should know something about out situation. You may have to put off changing until after the baby is born. Are you even the least bit excited?” Sadness filled his tone and as he waited for me to answer I realized something.
Edward was happy, maybe even excited about our unexpected pregnancy. A weight I hadn’t know I was carrying lifted from my shoulders and relief blossomed throughout my entire body. “We weren’t prepared for this. We’re both too young to be having children right now. I used to picture having children and the though of one day having one or two made me happy. I’ve always wanted to be a mother, but I just didn’t know that it would ever happen. I knew that once I changed I wouldn’t be able to have children and I had to accept that. I’m glad that I have the change, but I’m not sure that we’re ready for this and it scares me.”
He was quiet for lone moments and I knew he was breaking down every word I had said looking for some sort of reason to be worried or upset. I looked beyond his shoulder at Alice who stood motionless against the far wall of the hallway. There was a reassuring smile on her pixie-like face.
“We’re not too young for this Bella, you’re eighteen and I’m far old enough to support you and a family. I’m old enough to become a faithful loving husband and a devoted father as well. I’ve got more money then I know what to do with. We’ll never have issues paying for the child’s needs or his or her future. We’ll get married, honeymoon, and then we’ll come back and focus on our family. Unless you don’t wish to keep the baby, then there are other options,” he trailed off quietly.
My mouth dropped open in surprise when I realized what it was that he was suggesting, “Edward, I couldn’t have an abortion! What sort of monster do you think I am?”
His eyes widened and I saw the corners of his mouth twitch with a smile, “Well, some people can do things like that without having any regrets. I just don’t want you to think that you have to go through with this pregnancy if you don’t want too. It’s your body and it is your life that it will affect.”
“I couldn’t do that. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. That’s an innocent life and I haven’t the right to take it. Plus, how often does the vampire of my dreams get the chance to be a father? Would I really want to take that way from you?” I asked lightly with a sniffle. I smiled up into his expressionless face and tried to make him believe that I was happy. Really I was.
“This is a very rare opportunity, but that’s no reason for you to do something you may not want too. Carrying a child is no simple task, you have to make sure you stay healthy, be extra careful as far as falling, and you have to give birth and that’s no simple task. Are you sure you want to do this? Are you happy Bella?” He’d set the test down on the counter and had taken both of my hands in his. The seriousness in his face made be consider my answer before I spoke.
I thought about it for a few long moments. Was I happy? I was going to have a baby, becoming big and fat in the process, and I was going to do it with Edward by my side the whole time. “Yes, I’m happy. I’m just scared and unprepared. I don’t know anything about babies and parents. What do you think about all of this, are you happy Edward?”
“Bella, love, I’m delighted. I’ve always thought about children, but I knew it was a slim chance. Even slimmer of a chance for me because I hadn’t found anybody I was willing to settle down with. You know will have to go and tell everybody about it, they’re bound to find out.”
“Oh God, what will Charlie and Renee say?” I breathed.
“They’re going to have hysterics.” Alice finally spoke shrugging away from the wall. She smiled at me and pointed to the counter, “You’d better grab those and then we’ll get going. Charlie will have a cow if he finds those in the garbage.”
“You’re not helping Alice.” Edward snarled at her over his shoulder. She shrugged and then disappeared down the stairs leaving us alone. “I love you very much Bella. I’m so happy that I’ve found you and that we’re forging our own lives together. It’s not just about my family and Charlie; it’s about you and me and what we have together.”
“I love you as well, and I’m glad that we are too.” I murmured before pressing my lips against his for a soft kiss.
He pulled away from me and pulled me into a tight hug, “Let’s get going. We need to speak with Carlisle about this.”
“I know, let’s get going. I’ve got to think of a way to break this to Charlie easily.” I let him go and put all of the tests and the boxing into the shopping bag. Great, we were off to see Carlisle, maybe he would have reassuring news for us.
