Hook’s attention turned back to Caitlin, as his charming way returned walking around the table towards her, “I apologize once again with your having to witness that, I’ve been away from the ship for quiet some time on very important business. Pirates and sailors tend to get restless with nothing to do. I had a few things to . . . deal with upon our return.”
That was enough to bring the young college student back to her senses, as she snapped out of the entrancing spell the Pirate Captain had cast over her. “You. It was you brought me here.” She said pointedly, as she turned towards him. Not sure if she wanted to sound angry, or annoyed towards this man. “Why have you brought me here, what do you want from me.” She asked her tone sounding a bit harsher then she had intended it, but she stood firmly behind her question.
Hook winced slightly as she looked towards him like a flighty rabbit; ready to bound off in any direction from the fear and confusion she was feeling. “I’ve brought you here to entertain you of course. What better place to share my hospitality then here, in my home.” Giving her a kind smile with his words. Her body stood strong as if to say she covered every inch of ground she stood on, rather then drawing back up in herself like many women where prone to do when they were frightened. Inside he felt even more drawn to her at her courage.
“You’ve kidnapped me from my school, you snuck onto the campus and broke into the girls dormitories and carried me off in the dead of night. You could have asked me, you could have given me the choice to come here or to decline.” The words she spoke sent a chill down her own spine, there weren’t many women accepted at Oxford. Being an American, she found herself beaten down and humiliated in front of her classmates quiet often for speaking her mind to the teachers. She saw rage and fiery tempers flare towards her. Most times she took the stance she held now not backing down, even though inside she felt as if she could curl up and die.
This encounter was not starting off well at all, “I apologize for that, certain extenuating circumstances forced me to forgo the formalities.” Before she could say another word or argue again he raised his hand towards her chair not daring the approach her any closer until she was more at ease. “I would very much like it, if you would dine with me. So that we may enjoy one another’s company, and perhaps some pleasant conversation.” Caitlin had been looking for a way out of the argument she’d started, being tired from her constant worrying all day and one shock after another she’d suffered. Hesitating only a moment, she moved slowly towards the chair sitting back down silently, her back strait and posture perfect, due to the extremely tight bodice she was wearing.
He bowed slightly before turning back towards his own seat across the table sitting down, watching her. “Please don’t hesitate to eat, you must be famished considering you did not partake of a meal yesterday nor today whilst you slept.” There was a rather large plate set before her filled with food that was still hot and smelled wonderful. Her eyes shifted downward towards it a moment, taking a breath. While her eyes where turned away, The Captain moved his hook he had been hiding from her view underneath the table. She would have to see it sooner or later but not yet.
Her eyes shifted back up towards the pirate Captain who had stolen her away. “Will you not be eating as well?” She asked suspiciously, still thinking in the back of her mind that the food could be poisoned, it was so tempting and she would happily dive right into the plate. Yet she was still cautious and wanted to see him eat something from the table first.
Hook smiled at this, she was as devious as himself when it came to inadvertently seeking information, without letting the person you were seeking it from know what you wanted. However, it being a method he had used on several persons before, he knew exactly what it was she suspected. Reaching up, he picked up a small piece of meat and without hesitating popped it into his mouth chewing and swallowing making sure that she saw. Watching him for a moment, feeling starved and able to eat an entire animal were the chance given her, she decided it was enough to go by and picked up her fork and knife. She began instantly cutting off pieces and eating them almost as quickly as she’d cut them. He watched her in silence, knowing she was hungry and didn’t think ill of her for the way she ate for even a moment.
After she had enough to eat to slake her hunger, she slowed down taking smaller bites as she looked up at him remembering where she was. Hook had been to busy watching her to start on his own meal, and she called attention to it. “Are you not that hungry?” She inquired watching him for several moments, thinking him incredibly strange in his manner and the way he acted.
“Hmmm?” His brows rising slightly not sure what she meant by that question, before realizing he’d not eaten anything since his demonstration for her the food was safe. “Oh, yes . . . I’ve been with out appetite as of late.” Picking up his knife and fork as he began to join her. His eyes wondered up to her for a moment, wanting to hear her voice again. Deciding conversation was the best way to do so, “Tell me . . .” He began calling her attention back to him, “. . . what are your interests Miss Amore.” Her eyes moved up to look at him, similar to that of a deer in the headlights.
“Music? Literature?” adding to his question hoping to speed his attempt at making her feel at ease and getting her to speak with him. “I was under the impression you took quite a bit of delight in writing, and reading.” Remembering how many times he watched her as she sat in the courtyard in the quad of the school, sometimes making her late for her next class.
Caitlin knew well what manners where, and knew it would be completely rude of her not to answer him, even if he had some dire plan for her after stealing her away in the dead of night. “Oh yes, I do. I’m not sure that there is a book left in the Oxford library that I haven’t read since I came over to study.” It was a start, and she seemed less defensive and slightly more comfortable. Hook quickly sorted out thoughts running through his mind of how to continue, feeling as if he was on the right track.
“Is that what you wish to do with your studies? Become a historian or even perhaps a novelist one day?” The thought of a woman writing and publishing her works was slightly unheard of to him, considering the time in which he’d come from when the curse was first thrust upon him and his pirate crew. Even though the time he’d spent walking the streets of London looking for his companion had taught him volumes of the new accomplishments of the human race, there were just some things that he could not understand nor quite grasp.
“No, it’s more of a hobby then a career choice. I have several degrees and I have an internship waiting for me back home when I return there in two weeks, now that finals are over.” Reaching up, hook took a hold of his crystal wine glass taking a drink. She would not be returning, but she did not know that as of yet. He had to convince her in someway to want to stay here with him. Caitlin’s mind was filled with many thoughts as well. Some about the mysterious Captain who seemed very eccentric as far as his cabin and possessions where concerned. Other thoughts about the possible dangers she was in kept stirring about in her thoughts as well. “Captain . . . . .” she had started, but stopped realizing that she’d not heard his name yet.
He’d realized it as well quickly thinking of something different to tell her other then his nickname ‘Hook’. “James, please call me James.” Caitlin thought that odd, she’d never heard of a Captain who wasn’t addressed in formal fashion. Especially a pirate Captain, weather he be a real one or suffering from delusions of grandeur on an exceptionally large scale. She was already leaning towards the second one, but found it best to humor him in his request.
“James . . .” She said correcting herself. Hook started to grin at the sound of his given name as it crossed her crimson lips, but quickly stopped himself regaining his interested expression. “Why have you brought me here, and in such a criminal way.” With a full stomach now, she’d regained her strength that was lacking behind her courage when she’d inquired to his reasons before. “I can not think it was simply to treat me to a meal and conversation.” She looked down at her dress and then back up at him, “You’ve even dressed me in clothing that is . . . . .very old fashioned and nothing at all like other people in London wear. Nor anyone, who’s apart of this century. What is going on?”
He was cornered; any attempt to sate her again would only make her more avid. It was obvious that she thought he was insane. He leaned back in his chair a moment trying to think on how the best way to go about explaining things to her might be. Slowly his blue eyes lifted again towards her waiting face, “Your not in London, nor Oxford nor even England anymore. You are in a place far from there, in fact it’s nearly impossible to get back or to escape this wretched womb of misery.” Caitlin’s eyes grew wide at his words. The shock of what he said washing over her a few times sending chills up her spine. He continued knowing that he must, despite her reactions, “I brought you here on such sudden notice because I had to return, and I could not take the time I would have liked to put into affect the formalities that were lost.”
He paused here waiting to see what she had to say next. Caitlin’s eyes shifted downward a moment as she let what he had said sink in. Finally her eyes moved back to his face, “It’s a lie. We’re somewhere in England. If we were on a ship as you said, the boat would be moving, I would hear water and sounds or something. I’ve felt and heard neither of those things.” Needless to say it was absolutely true. He pushed back from the table standing, taking care to keep his hook behind him. Caitlin’s heart jumped up into her throat as he walked towards her, and she instinctively leaned back away from him.
“Come with me dear woman, and I will show you why you have not heard the sounds that would make you believe me.” Her eyes blinked once or twice, not sure if she should trust him. She’d seen his face when he spoke to his first mate. It was not the gentle expression he carried now, it was very different. However, it wasn’t as if she had very much choice in this matter. Slowly she moved to stand on the opposite side of the chair that he’d move near. The way she continued to shy away from him and keep her distance made his stomach turn. How was he ever going to get close enough to touch her while she was awake?
He moved crossing the room moving his hook to his side so she could not see. Slowly she followed after him when he walked towards the door. Unlocking it as he turned to her, looking over her dress once more. She’d not want to stay out of the cabin very long as low cut as her garments were. Taking a breath he turned back and flung open the doors of the cabin wide open. A snowstorm had come up in the short while they had been inside, and snow blew in through the door. The icy wind tore over her body with it’s bone chilling teeth. She raised her hands in front of her eyes, to keep the white dust like snow from hitting her face and eyes as she pushed out the door onto the deck outside his cabin that looked over the rest of the ship.
You could not see the island with the mighty strength of the storm that had arisen but she could see off to the sides of the ship that where incased in solid ice. She was breathing hard as she’d never felt so cold in her life, while her mind tried to process how this all could have happened so quickly. The Captain quickly pulled her back inside, not wanting her to freeze to death from standing out in the ice and rain very long. Quickly closing the door and locking it yet again, he turned and looked at her. Her teeth chattering and body shivering, he saw already a slightly blue tinge to her skin. Not being able to help himself he walked towards her reaching out beginning to pull her towards him, “Here, let me warm you . . .”
Caitlin’s eyes grew wide quickly pushing his hand away from her, backing up a few steps away from him. She began to speak out loud, her mind trying to process everything. She was 22, no longer a child and was educated through a high level of learning. The logic that children where not burdened with, but nearly all Adults were, was weighing on her mind heavily. “This is impossible. How could we have possibly been frozen at sea so quickly if you had carried me here only last night. It does not get this cold in the waters around England, we would have had to go further north and that takes more time in a ship that requires wind to move then half a day.” He stepped towards her again, only to have her jump back even further away.
“Caitlin” He said sternly, “Don’t run from me.” He demanded as he walked towards her again, she moved to stand behind the chair she’d sat in only a little while before. He did not like this in the least bit. The way she looked at him, seemed to say “I dare you.”. It was a dare he was willing to accept as all at once he lunged forward grabbing her arm with his good hand and pulling her around the chair up close to him, enough that he could wrap his arm around her so she couldn’t back away from him again. She began to struggle, but he held her fast and tried to speak to her in her growing state of frenzy, “I brought you here, because I chose you. I chose you out of all the women I came across in my searches. You were beautiful, lovely, graceful.”
She stopped struggling for a moment to catch her breath as her eyes looked up at him, his grip so tight on her as he pulled her hard against him, she could barely breathe. The weight of the dress and yards and yards of cloth she was not used to, made it extremely difficult to move. The whalebone in the bodice limited her movement to nearly nothing except the movement to breathe. “Take me back, do you hear me? I want to go back to the school immediately!!! You got us out here, now take me back whatever way you brought me!” She yelled starting to struggle again. He held her tighter still, as he looked down at her.
His voice grew harsher for a moment as well, not being used to having any person oppose his wishes for so long. “You may struggle all you wish, but you can not break my grasp I’m much stronger then you are.” His tone softened for a moment as that of absolute desperation, this situation had turned bad quickly. “Caitlin, I want you for my wife, I want you to be with me for eternity. Everything you have ever wanted in your life you would have. I would give you everything and the very stars above if you wanted them.”
“I’m not going to marry you!!” She yelled, in a panic she found herself able to lift her foot enough to bring the heel of the boot she wore that seemed to go with the dress onto his foot. He hollered loud as his body froze for a moment, enough for her to wrestle away from his grasp in just a few seconds. She ran for the door and looked for the mechanism that he used to lock it, wanting to get away without the thought of her freezing to death once she was out, never even crossed her mind.
Hook turned and looked at her, the sudden attack on his person causing a flash of pure rage and anger to cross his face, but he claimed it quickly following after her. He grabbed her shoulder turning her around to face him as his took her once more into his grasp. She whimpered in dire despair, as it seemed there was no escape. “Caitlin, calm down, please calm down, . . . .” He tried to gently get her to listen to him, but it seemed she was not hearing, “CAITLIN, CALM DOWN THIS INSTANT” he shouted at her. His voice roaring, loud, terrifying as she stopped moving looking up at him. Her eyes wide and her chest heaving against the bodice she wore taking in breath after deep breath. The sound of his voice shook her very bones paralyzing her with fear.
He looked down at her for several moments, taking a few long breathes of his own attempting to cool his temper at her display. “You can not go back. You are going to stay with me, here aboard my ship.” She started to struggle again pushing against his chest, growing tired and feeling absolutely helpless. He shook his head and pushed her hard away from him as she fell against the wall, moving quickly he raised his good hand pushing her hard against the door, pressing against her collar bone. Hook moved in close, his face only inches away from her’s. “I do not wish to be cruel to you Caitlin, but your not leaving me with a choice.” She took a breath, and made one last attempt to wrestle free of his grasp, her hands reaching up grasping his wrist trying to move his away from her neck. He growled his temper flaring again, raising his hook and slamming it hard into the wall just next to her head. It sunk deep into the wood of the ships frame causing it to splinter. Her eyes grew wide at the sight, the large gleaming object that replaced this man’s hand, sharp and terrible just to cast eyes upon. All at once her body stopped struggling and went limp. Those beautiful blue eyes of hers closed as she started to slide down the wall.
Hooks anger melted a way in a matter of moments at this. Reaching out to stop her fall, her body shifted away from the wall and fell against him into his arms. “Caitlin?” He questioned, but there was no response and her body was absolutely limp. He turned her so she would lay against his knee on her back looking at her face. Her skin was pale and nearly white as a sheet.
His eyes looked up towards the wall, at the damage his hook had dug into the ships wooden frame, before his eyes moved back down again to her unconscious form. All at once the thoughts of his actions and what he had just done to her flooded his mind. The things she had to accept upon his telling her, that her educated mind had grown to believe was impossible, had caused her to fall into a state of shock and she was out of her head with fear. He grew angry not understanding why she would act in such away. A sense of absolute stupidity entered next at his growing bold and insisting on holding her to him so she could not retreat, against her will.
He had lost his senses in just a few short moments and couldn’t stop or control himself. He had wanted her for such a long time, it felt as if an eternity passed as he watched her without being able to get close to her. His emotions and that fact had governed his thoughts more then his common sense. She’d be terrified of him now when she awoke “Dear god, forgive me.” He said cupping her cheek in his good hand turning her face towards him with the utmost gentleness and care. “Forgive me.” He whispered, his thumb rubbing apologetically and affectionately against her cheek.
