Chapter Five: A New Perspective
I don’t know exactly what I was expecting. I’d heard stories, of course; being in the Entourage pretty much assured it.
Salem was so far beyond my expectations.
We landed in a small building; landed is the most accurate word for it, since we hit the ground hard. After getting ourselves back on our feet and ensuring that Bella hadn’t broken anything we moved toward the exit, where a bored looking woman sat waiting. She was reading a book and didn’t bother looking up as she spoke and gestured toward a box on the desk in front of her.
“Welcome to the Salem Shopping District. Please deposit the used Portkey and enjoy your shopping experience. ”
Harry thanked her in an excessively chipper voice and she glanced at him over the top of her book. The book hit the desk around the same time as her chin.
“You’re Harry Potter!”
Harry just shot her a smile, thanked her again, and led us out of the building. He stopped, glancing up and down the street while muttering to himself. Despite the smile on his face he sounded frustrated.
“Why do people always do that? I know what my name is.”
Jasper and Emmett started snickering, but Bella and I patted his arms soothingly. Even though she didn’t laugh out loud, I think Esme was amused, too. After a moment Harry moved to the left and we followed like little ducklings. We’d barely taken five steps before someone else was telling Harry his name; soon we were surrounded by people who all apparently loved him. It was one thing to hear about it, but it was something entirely different to see it for ourselves. When people started throwing out marriage offers for themselves and their offspring (including one woman who was offering the kid she was pregnant with at the time) I started to get pissed.
Really, really pissed. Check out the hair styles, assholes!
Thankfully Emmett can read me pretty well because he made a few subtle gestures to Jasper, Carlisle and Edward and we found ourselves surrounded by protective Vampires who acted like professional bodyguards. Harry whispered that we were going to the huge white building about eighty yards up the street so Jasper and Emmett led the way. We made it there in far more time than it should have taken and saw the next new thing; small green…things. Things that were definitely not zombie C.H.U.D. raisins. Thankfully Harry whispered that they were Goblins before any of us could make fools of ourselves. The Goblins bowed as they opened the doors for us, and we followed Harry’s lead by bowing or curtsying in return. I noticed that the Goblin I passed seemed to be appraising us; I had a feeling he was trying to decide if he could take us in a fight. If even half of what I’d heard was true there was no doubt that he could. We joined the line and got first hand experience being associated with Harry Potter in a place that was not Muggle or the street. When a Goblin closed his line and hurried down to offer his assistance Harry politely offered to wait his turn in line behind everyone who had already been waiting their turns.
Everyone else got out of line.
Harry pasted on the smile I understood to mean ‘I’m pissed off but will remain polite’ as we moved forward to the Goblin’s counter. Once we were there I watched as everything else got back in the fucking line. They were smiling and whispering about how lucky they were to be in the same building as THE Harry Potter. Twenty minutes in a Wizard settlement and I already understood why Harry avoided them. The Goblin reopened his line and Harry told him that we had several points of business we were hoping to attend to while at the bank. I looked around the room. Marble, marble, more marble and precious metals.
This was a bank? The fees must be astronomical.
The Goblin closed his counter again and led us down a long hallway; more marble and precious metals, but here there were precious stones the size of Emmett’s hands embedded in the walls. I made a private note to recommend Harry transfer his account to Wells Fargo or Chase as we were led into a room; large sofas upholstered in rich brocades, antique end tables, even a bone china tea tray with fancy little sandwiches and blood pops sat waiting for us! I admit that I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. Harry led me to the longest sofa and settled me in the center. After making sure Esme, Alice, and Bella found seats as well Harry sat to my left and Emmett sat to my right. I grabbed both of their hands tightly; Emmett squeezed back, but Harry just pressed a kiss to my cheek before leaning forward to offer Bella tea. He didn’t try to take back his hand and I didn’t think to offer it so Bella ended up saving the day, as it were, by pouring cups for the both of them. She even put in his milk and sugar the way he asked for it before handing him the cup. Harry sat back, leaning into me as though our close proximity were his idea instead of mine, and opened a conversation with Bella.
“May I ask?”
That caught my attention, pulling me out of my self imposed shock. I could see all of my family mentally sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to see where this was going. Bella didn’t need him to qualify the question.
“I Googled Poly-fidelity after I got a strange email from someone I don’t know named Luna. She said that my choice to adhere to bigotry was going to lead me down a lonely path. I don’t know why I believed her but I did and I’m glad because I understand now.”
Harry nodded as though this were normal. After taking a sip of his tea he explained his lack of reaction.
“Luna is my Alice.”
Well that certainly explained why Harry was so comfortable with my sister, then. Before the conversation could go any further the door opened and another Goblin walked in. Harry rose to shake his hand so we all followed, but the Goblin waved us back into our seats casually. Harry retook his seat beside me and the Goblin waved his hand; a desk and chair popped into existence, where he settled himself with a single sheet of parchment.
“How may I assist you this afternoon, my Liege?”
Harry sighed.
“I’m never going to get you to stop calling me that am I, Garske?”
The Goblin laughed.
“Indeed not, my Liege. ”
Harry shook his head in amusement before getting serious.
“I need to make a few changes to my accounts and then I’m going to need to visit a Vault. I don’t really care which one.”
I looked at Harry out of the side of my eye at that. How many Vaults did he have? We’ve never discussed our finances so I didn’t really know anything about this. We rarely shopped together and when we did whoever got to the register first paid for everyone; perhaps this was a discussion we needed to have at some point…I was pulled from my thoughts when the Goblin spoke again.
“What changes would you like made, my Liege?”
Harry took a deep breath and I felt like Alice for a moment; I just knew he was going to do something that would knock my world sideways.
“I need to designate a Family Vault and add my partners to the entire account.”
Damn was I ever right.
“I’m sorry I think I just had an aneurysm. What did you say?”
Harry turned to me seriously, grabbing my hand tightly.
“Please trust me.”
I didn’t even need to think about it; I agreed and let him do whatever it was he was doing. He turned back to the Goblin, who nodded.
“I need both their given human names and their chosen Vampire names to legalize the addition.”
Harry turned toward us, indicating that we should answer that. I spoke first, trying not to appear surprised that the Goblin knew we were Vampires.
“My human name was Rosalie Hale, and my Vampire name is also Rosalie Hale.”
The Goblin nodded, writing it on his parchment. Emmett spoke next.
“My human name was Emmett McCarty, and my Vampire name is Emmett Cullen.”
The Goblin wrote that as well before sending Harry a slightly scary smile; I think it was the teeth.
“That is rather refreshing.”
Harry smiled back sunnily.
“Isn’t it?”
We all looked confused so the Goblin elaborated.
“Many Vampires feel the need to change their entire name to something…I guess stereotypical is a good word. Like Gabriel Potter who now chooses to go by Sanguini del Mar.”
I turned to a cringing Harry.
“Gabriel Potter?”
He chuckled uncomfortably.
“Yeah, my many times great grandfather. We don’t talk much because he’s new to the vegetarian diet and doesn’t trust himself around humans.”
Carlisle spoke up excitedly.
“How new?”
Harry gave that uncomfortable chuckle again.
“About three centuries.”
Jasper looked so disappointed.
“Three centuries and he still has trouble?”
Harry nodded understandingly.
“He has completely cut himself off from humans since changing his diet, so the once or twice a century he sees one is way over the top on the impulse meter because he refuses to build up any sort of immunity to it.”
Jasper seemed appeased by this and the Goblin gave my brother an understanding sort of nod.
“If you are having difficulties I can put you in touch with a well qualified Potions Master and Charms Master to assist you, but using freewill is always preferred because then you have no concerns if you miss a dose or the Charm fails.”
Jasper seemed to almost swell with determination; if this was common enough to be common knowledge here then damned if he wasn’t going to do it himself. However…
“Perhaps I can make contact in case of an emergency?”
The Goblin nodded.
“They would make very good allies.”
Harry and the Goblin got back on track and my world fell sideways again.
“And the designation for the Family Vault?”
“Cullen.”
There was shock on the faces around me…except for Carlisle’s, who just had a small smile. When he noticed my notice he answered the unspoken question.
“I remember this tradition and I am honored to accept.”
He didn’t explain any further but Alice got that look on her face for a moment before she let out a squeal and Edward’s face snapped to Harry in shock. For his part Harry just looked embarrassed.
“I’ll explain later.”
Again I just nodded and followed his lead; I had complete trust in Harry to do what was best for us in any situation so I had no reason to press for details now. I could do that later. At home. When I had him captive. With no possibility of escape. Or short green pointy toothed backup. The sudden coughing fit Edward had told me that line of thought had leaked through…
“I’ll need the human and Vampire names of those involved, and I presume that I will be making the Muggle Inclusion?”
Harry nodded carelessly and sat back while everyone gave their names; Bella was shocked when the Goblin asked for hers as well, but I didn’t need Harry to explain that she was included through Edward. I still don’t really like the girl but I wouldn’t fight Harry on this, especially since it would make Edward happy. Once that was done the Goblin left the room to have our keys printed and I turned to Harry for an explanation; he flushed when everyone else did as well. He rubbed the back of his neck self-consciously for a long moment before speaking.
“I sort of went about this the wrong way; I should have spoken to your fathers first and everything, but basically by designating a Family Vault I’m giving the Family Cullen a dowry for the both of you. I decided to do that sort of spur of the moment since we were already here and had agreed on the hair thing…”
Harry trailed off, but that may have been on account of my squeezing the breath out of him. Or Emmett doing it to the both of us. Not that I needed to breathe, but that’s just splitting hairs and I hate split hair. I let myself be squished between Emmett and Harry, who was doing his damnedest to squeeze me in return, until the Goblin got back. After handing out our keys (Emmett and I got a huge handful each, which was a bit surprising but we just dumped them all in my purse for the moment) the Goblin led us out to the lobby of the bank. From there Harry, Emmett and I went through another door where another Goblin waited to take us in what looked like an old mine cart. I cast it a dubious look but Harry reassured us that everything was perfectly safe; I was more worried about the dirt and grime on my designer dress and Harry’s robe but didn’t argue. It was cute how the silly boy actually thought I was worried for my safety.
I’m a freaking Vampire for goodness sake.
The ride was amazing; I’ve always loved roller coasters and this was one of the best I’ve ever been on. Then we got to the Vault; the Goblin asked for a key and Harry handed over a whole ring of them, laughing that he wasn’t sure which one it was. The Goblin looked unimpressed until Harry admitted that he hadn’t specified which Vault he wanted to visit; suddenly we were this Goblin’s best friend. The Goblin opened the door to what looked like a large wall safe absolutely filled with gold coins. Harry casually filled a purple velvet pouch he pulled from his pocket with as much as he could fit (which seemed to be a good hundred times it should have) and we put the rest into my purse; I knew I carried oversize purses for a reason. Soon enough the Vault was empty and the Goblin looked overjoyed; almost orgasmic, even, which was a bit creepy. Once we’d made the return trip Harry explained.
“That vault just had yesterday’s interest from one of the other Vaults in it. By taking it all I showed that I trusted the Goblins to make the right investments that will fill it back up quickly.”
That made an elliptical sort of sense so we met the rest of the family, who we learned had gone to the Family Vault, and took our positions to go back outside; in other words, full guard formation again. As soon as we crossed the threshold my only thought was Holy fuck it got worse. There was an absolute mob of people clogging the street and blocking our way off the bank stairs. Old fashioned camera flashes (the sort that puff and smoke that I remember from my human life) were going off throughout the crowd and I noticed several people with quills shouting questions we couldn’t make out over the noise. Reporters? Is the news day that slow today? I heard Harry heave a weary sigh but he plastered on a smile and raised his hand for silence, which came surprisingly quickly from this crowd. From there he gave a pretty speech about how wonderful it was to see everyone and how much the shopkeepers were sure to appreciate their patronage; I heard Edward stifling his chuckles behind me and had to repress a smirk of my own. Pressuring these people to spend their money while they were stalking him would teach the bastards a thing or two! Once he was finished Harry agreed to answer a few questions and the first came from some overly made up woman near the front.
“Why have you changed your hair?”
Harry’s smile turned just the tiniest bit sappy and I felt a surge of triumph for helping to put that look on his face.
“I’ve fallen in love with two of the most amazing people I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet. Because they live in the Muggle world where Triad Bondings are no longer accepted we chose to show the acknowledgement without the legal hassles. We’ve actually just completed the Designation.”
I heard someone call out asking for our names and Harry waved us forward.
“It is my exquisite pleasure to introduce you to Rosalie Hale and Emmett Cullen of the Family Cullen.”
More flashes went off and I had a feeling I’d be front page news, not that I minded; I looked fabulous. This time a young boy no older than ten near the front asked a question.
“Do they play Quidditch?”
Most of the crowd started laughing but Harry took the question as seriously as he had the others.
“Not yet; we go to college in Boston and there isn’t a pitch out there. Once we’ve gotten our degrees I was thinking I’d take them to see the World Cup and ask if we could play a pick up game afterwards.”
Emmett spoke up next, focusing his ‘I’m a big goofball and not at all threatening’ grin at the little boy.
“I think it would be cool to be a Keeper, but I probably wouldn’t be fast enough. I’d make a good Beater, though.”
The crowd mumbled at that, mostly agreements from what I could hear, while the boy sized Emmett up.
“You’d be a good Beater but Vampires make better Chasers because they almost never drop the Quaffle.”
Emmett twitched slightly in shock but didn’t let it show on his face while he responded to the little boy.
“I’ll keep that in mind, thank you. I’ve never really given any thought to being a Chaser. I just know I want to be on Harry’s team; he never misses the Snitch.”
The crowd cheered, which was too loud and grated on my nerves a bit. Harry answered a few more questions; I even got one about my hair care and clothing designer. Apparently all the girls were going to be wearing my favorite designer for now because I was; it was ego boosting. Finally Harry agreed to answer one last question and the crowd reaction to his answer shocked me cold.
“What brand is your shirt, Mr. Potter? I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
The question asker was a seamstress who’d already asked about my dress and our robes so I didn’t think too much of it. Harry sent me a gentle smile as he answered.
“Rosalie made it for me as a gift.”
The crowd went completely silent, shock on nearly every face. The seamstress sputtered a bit before getting out her next question.
“By herself?”
Harry nodded solemnly.
“Every stitch by hand, and contoured to suit my body perfectly. She even modified it a bit so it could be worn alone, with a blazer, or under an open robe.”
The crowd loosened up after that and let us through, but I noticed throughout the marathon shopping expedition we undertook afterward that people were regarding me with shock and no small measure of awe. I needed answers but I wasn’t going to get them here. Thank goodness we’d be alone this evening; I was getting my answers.
If I was lucky I’d also get to watch my two gorgeous men have sex for the first time since we’d gotten home. Hell, luck had nothing to do with it; I was going to orchestrate things to go my way. Just because it was Harry’s birthday didn’t mean I couldn’t get a present, too! When we got home there were only two hours until our reservation so Emmett sent our family away while I drew Harry into the bedroom to get him ready. He was going to remember this birthday for something more than a trip to the bank and Dr. Seuss if I had anything to say about it.
