Everything changed the evening Bella and Jacob went to the movies. The evening itself didn’t even go that well. Everyone but Mike cancelled on Bella, so it was just her, Jacob, and Mike—and Mike got sick before the end of the movie, so they ended up leaving early.
Bella noticed a few odd things about Jacob, like how he was so hot to the touch, but Jacob insisted he felt fine. He seemed fine too, until just before he left for home. He assured Bella he wasn’t feeling sick, just weird.
That didn’t stop Bella from worrying though. She called the Black home twenty minutes after Jacob had left to make sure he’d got home all right. Billy answered and told her Jacob was home and had gone straight to bed.
Liam knew what was happening. He also knew Jacob would probably be different when it was all over. He may not even want to be around Bella. This worried Liam, because he hadn’t been able to bring Edward to his senses yet.
As the days passed Bella started to slip back into her depression. She kept trying to call Jacob, but no one ever answered. Eventually she ended up asking Charlie to call Harry Clearwater, who said Jacob had mono, and Billy was having trouble with the phone.
Bella decided to give it another week before she drove over there. Liam was impressed with her persistence, but a little annoyed with her ignorance. How she’d ever managed to figure out what Edward was, Liam had no idea.
At the end of the week she called again, and Billy answered to tell her Jacob was feeling better and had gone out with friends. Bella wondered why Jacob hadn’t called if he was feeling better, and she started to panic. The thought of spending yet another day all alone terrified her, though she tried not to let it show. She didn’t want Charlie to worry.
Even though there were reports of a huge black bear in the area, she decided to go hiking and continue to try and find the clearing on her own. Jacob had been trying to help her find the clearing Edward had taken her to. She’d told Jacob she had come across it and wanted to see it again, but in reality she was hoping to hear Edward’s voice again. She was getting better with the motorcycle, so that wasn’t doing it for her any more.
Liam followed her of course, staying far enough away that he wouldn’t be noticed. One thing he had to admit was that she was becoming a lot more graceful crawling through the underbrush. Jacob had been good for her, so it was a shame she was losing him.
Bella actually got lucky and found the clearing on her own this time. At first she was excited, but then reality crushed her. Edward’s presence wasn’t there. She saw nothing but trees and grass. She crumpled to the ground and wished the earth would swallow her up.
She had been there for quite a while when she spotted the figure on the other side of the clearing. A thrill of excitement ran through her before her brain processed that it wasn’t Edward. As it turned out, it was Laurent.
“Laurent!” she called out excitedly as she got to her feet. She didn’t feel afraid because he hadn’t tried to kill her before. He had said he was going up to Alaska to join other civilized vampires. She should have been afraid.
“Bella,” he greeted her with a predatory grin. “What luck to find you here. I would have thought you’d left with the Cullens.”
Bella’s brain suddenly started to put two and two together, and she took a step back. And at that moment she got what she wanted: Edward’s voice told her to lie. “It would look too suspicious if I went with.”
“Still, it’s even stranger that they left you unprotected.”
“They didn’t,” Liam said as he stepped out from the treeline. He wasn’t supposed to let Bella see him, but she already knew he was there, and the situation called for his presence.
Laurent took a moment to assess the situation. “My apologies.” He bowed gracefully. “I’ll be leaving, then.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “You actually expect me to let you waltz out of here and go report to Victoria?”
The name sent a shiver through Bella. She’d been so preoccupied with losing Edward she hadn’t given Victoria a second thought. It dawned on her that maybe that was why Liam was still there, in case of things like this.
Laurent tried to run, but Liam took off like a shot after him. Laurent was fast, but Liam was faster. The scene unfolding before her reminded Bella of watching a lion taking down a baby wildebeest on the nature channel. She closed her eyes tight and tried to block out the sounds of animalistic snarls and tearing flesh.
She opened her eyes again when she felt a hand land gently on her shoulder. “Are you all right?” Liam asked.
She stared up at him, not quite knowing what to say. She was grateful that he had protected her, but angry that he had hidden from her. In the end she decided to push the anger aside so she wouldn’t chase him away. “Yeah, I’m fine,” she assured him.
Liam helped her up and his eyes scanned the treeline. “What’s wrong?” Bella asked, fearing that there were more vampires lurking in the trees.
“We should go,” was all Liam said as he swung her around so she was clinging to his back like she used to do with Edward. “Close your eyes and hold on tight,” he warned before bolting into the trees.
Bella didn’t close her eyes. She missed watching the scenery go by in a blur. What she hadn’t anticipated was that Edward either must have held back on her account, or Liam was faster; maybe both. When they reached her truck and Liam let her down, the world spun and Bella fell on her ass, fighting the urge to throw up.
Liam laughed and scooped her up and put her in the passenger side of her truck. “I told you to close your eyes.”
All Bella could do was groan in response while Liam reached into her pocket and took her keys. It was getting dark and she knew Charlie would be worried. She had told him she was going to spend the day at home.
“Why did you hide from me?” she asked Liam when she finally regained her senses.
“I was supposed to,” he answered without taking his eyes off the road. “He wanted you to heal, not hound me for information,” Liam explained, referring to Edward, but not saying his name.
Bella choked back a sob and tried to look angry instead. “Well you didn’t do a very good job. I knew you were there.”
Liam laughed again. “I didn’t say I was trying very hard to keep that promise. In fact, I’m on your side.”
“You are?” Bella asked, completely shocked.
He nodded as he pulled into the driveway. “My nephew and I aren’t exactly on speaking terms because of what he did. I hope you’re not angry with Carlisle. He did what he thought was best.”
She nodded. “No, I’m not angry with them, not even Jasper. I just want them back.” It was amazing how easy Liam was to talk to. She had met him only once, yet she was completely comfortable with him.
Liam opened his door and hesitated. “He’s being very stubborn, but he can’t out-stubborn me. Such a thing is impossible,” he mused.
“Come in,” Bella said while gazing up into his now emerald eyes. It was more of a demand than a request. “You said you’re here for me, and I need you.”
“I don’t think your father would appreciate my company,” Liam argued. Charlie was probably not very happy with the entire Cullen family for what they’d done to his daughter.
“It’ll be fine,” Bella pleaded with her eyes. She didn’t make saying no easy. “You’re not…you didn’t do anything.”
“Fine,” Liam sighed. “But if Charlie shoots me….”
They both got out of the truck and made their way inside. Charlie was pacing in the living room. “Where in the hell have you been?” he cried when he saw Bella. “And who is that?”
“This is Liam Cullen,” Bella introduced him. “He’s Carlisle’s brother. I met him—”
“Hiking,” Liam finished the sentence for her. “Well, the first time we met was her birthday party, but today I was hiking in the area.” He was turning on the charm and trying to prevent any trouble. Charlie was angry, but Liam managed to calm him down some. Being able to influence others’ emotions came in pretty handy in times like this.
“What were you doing hiking when I told you not to?” Charlie yelled. “You said you were going to spend the day at home. You had me worried sick when I came home to an empty house.”
“Sorry,” Bella mumbled. “I was going to stay home, but I got bored. You don’t have to worry about me hiking any more, though.”
“Yeah, you have no sense of direction,” Liam teased. That seemed to appease Charlie a little bit.
“Anyway, Liam said he was going to help me with my computer. It’s doing something funny, and he said he might be able to help me.”
“How old are you?” Charlie asked.
Liam gave him a soft smile. “I turned twenty-one in June, but don’t worry, my only interest in your daughter is as a friend. We’ll leave the door open.”
Charlie seemed to be placated for the moment so Bella led Liam to her bedroom. He left the door open as promised and took a seat in the rocking chair. “Well, I’m here. What do you intend to do with me?”
“I just don’t want to be alone,” Bella confessed.
“Then why didn’t you stay downstairs with Charlie?”
Bella sighed. “It’s complicated. I know he’s worried, but it’s just not the same. I miss Jacob. I can’t believe he hasn’t called me yet. Did I do something wrong?”
Liam started laughing and Bella scowled at him. “I don’t see what’s so funny.”
Liam leaned forward a little and looked her right in the eye. “Bella, think about it. You remember when you first met my nephew, and he was acting strange? You figured him out amazingly quickly. Of course it didn’t hurt that you seem to be his kryptonite.”
“What does that have to do with anything? Jacob was sick.”
Liam nodded. “Yes, except he was feeling weird, not sick. And now everyone is acting all strange. Billy wasn’t taking your phone calls. Bella, you’re smarter than this.”
She narrowed her eyes. “You know, don’t you?”
He shrugged. “It’s not my secret to tell. If Jacob is a true friend, he’ll come around. It may take a while though. He’s going through a lot of changes. And I should probably go before your father comes up to make sure I’m not taking advantage of you.”
“Liam, please tell me where they are.”
“I can’t. I won’t be held responsible for you jumping on a plane in the middle of the night.” He brushed her cheek as he walked past, causing her to suddenly feel sleepy.
When he reached the bottom of the stairs Charlie was sitting at the table with the newspaper. “Did you fix it?” he asked without looking up.
“Yeah,” Liam answered, “it wasn’t anything serious. I guess I should be going now.”
“Need a ride?” Charlie offered.
“No thanks, I think I’ll walk,” Liam declined with a smile. “It’s a nice night, and walking is good for you.”
“Okay then, just be careful. There’s a bear in the area.”
“I will.” Liam nodded before heading out into the night. He debated whether or not to call Edward when he got home. On the one hand, making Edward sweat was fun. On the other, clearly Bella was in danger. He had read Laurent’s thoughts and knew what Victoria was planning. The situation was getting more and more complicated.
