Week 5 Watson
I woke to the sound of someone playing the violin. It was a simple, sad melody that held me aloft with each quivering note. Each bow stroke awakened in me something transcendental and beautiful. Slowly I opened my eyes, in the dim light of the morning I saw Holmes sitting naked in my room on my bed, playing his beloved violin. “Are you a ghost?” I asked him.
Holmes turned to look at me, pulling the bow from the strings that still harmonically vibrated from his last note. “I assure you I’m very much alive.” A smile crossed his lips as he tucked his violin under his arm. “How do you feel?”
“I’ve felt better…” I admitted. “You left me for a week…” I whispered.
“I was never in any harm. Lestrade made sure of that.” Holmes replied. “Really… he did, Watson. He told me about your breakdown after my death. I regret hurting you so much.” Absently his fingers plucked at the strings. Tucking the instrument under his chin he played a few testing notes before starting in on another sorrowful melody.
“Holmes…” I whispered, reaching out to touch his arm. “That’s so sad.”
Lowering the violin again, he gently set it aside like some delicate lover before taking me in his arms. “I wrote it while I was dead… it’s about you.”
“You think of me when you play?” I asked in awe.
“Always.” He whispered, kissing me gently as if he feared I would break before lying me back down on the pillow.
“Why are you naked?” I asked with some amusement.
“I come to you as if a new born babe!” Holmes laughed, opening his arms to show himself off, “…in the hopes that you will forgive a foolish man when he is at his most vulnerable. If you threw me out in the street, aside from being dreadfully cold I would also be humiliated beyond anything I have before experienced.”
“You’ve experienced humiliation before?” I asked, looking him over fondly.
“Not since young adulthood.” Holmes fidgeted with his fingers in his lap.
“Not since Victor Trevor was found between your legs.” I stared at the blanket upon me.
Holmes reached out and patted my knee. “There, there. I prefer to forget everything I was before I met you.” Casting me a quick smile he got up and carefully placed himself atop me, over the covers. “I am truly sorry for causing you such sadness. No doubt I may worry you again, but I’ll try to be safe.” His lips lightly touched mine. “I don’t want you to worry. But I do have a career that is dangerous sometimes. I’d prefer to keep you safe from it… but I will happily keep you at my side.”
“You left me for a week, Holmes!” I replied but my arms wrapped around him, feeling the chill of his back. He had been naked for some time.
“I do that. But I didn’t know it would cause you so much grief. Next time I will tell you before I leave.” Resting his head against my cheek, he breathed deeply upon my neck. “I didn’t know the depth of your affection for me.”
“How could I not have affection? We’re a domestic partnership as you stated before.”
“Married. We’re married.” Holmes amended.
“Is that what we’re calling it now?” I smiled.
“Isn’t that what this is?” Holmes shifted to look me in the eye. “I’ve never been married before so I wouldn’t know exactly… but you did call yourself my husband when you forbade me to leave.”
“You’ve never been in love before either.” I pointed out. “Can you recognize it?”
“All that I have is yours.” Holmes settled his head against me again.
“Why don’t you get under the blankets with me? You’re chilled.”
Holmes obeyed, sliding under and wrapping his long limbs around me.
I ran my fingers through his hair as if to comfort him. “Maybe what you need… is a ceremony.”
“Oh John, I don’t stand on ceremony!” Holmes lifted his head to look at me.
“We can invite over a few of our friends who know us well… your brother for example… and they can bear witness to our union.”
“He’s not going to watch us… you know…”
“What? Are we back in the olden days with public fornication? No. I meant a small wedding ceremony.” I was amused at the direction of his imaginings.
“We could invite Lestrade.” Holmes sighed.
“He knows?” I suddenly felt nervous.
“He claims he can recognize sweethearts.” Holmes chuckled. “And he told me about what happened after the falls.”
“I thought I had died along with you…” I whispered, not trusting my voice to hold. “I realized then the depth of my love for you. I was grieving like a widow and we weren’t even…” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to compose myself. “You had insinuated yourself into my life so deeply… a part of me was gone. And I felt that emptiness consume me.”
“Lestrade was the first person you told when you got back?”
“I thought of anyone who knew us together as a partnership, he would understand the most. Plus he’s always had a fondness for you and I thought he should know directly from me. He was a good friend afterwards and seemed to understand my loss. I am grateful to him.”
“Then I am grateful to him as well. It seems he has some value.” Holmes chuckled softly.
I playfully smacked him on the arm. “Hey now, he’s our friend.”
“I advance his career.”
“Well if he’s the only one to have sense enough to listen to you…”
“Do you really want a ceremony? Do you want flowers and cake and all that, John? Is that what you want?”
“I don’t care. I’m happy just as long as we’re together.” I smiled at him in a reassuring way.
Holmes smiled back.
