What the hell was that noise? Rolling over deeper into her bed, Marilla buried her face in the pillow Hector had used. Wait… had used?
Coming fully awake Marilla looked around her room and found it was empty. Well that was odd… laying back down she pulled the pillow to her face and inhaled deeply. Where would he have gone? Did Acheron call him?
Wait… Acheron… FUCK!
She shot up and looked at the clock. 2:25 p.m. Shit she was late! Training was going to start promptly at 2. None too gracefully she shot up out of bed, however her blankets decided to follow and Marilla sprawled onto the hardwood floor.
Quickly she scrambled up and ran into her closet. Flipping the switch she grabbed the closest pair of black skinny jeans then a bra followed by a tight sports bra. Never could have enough support, immortal or not. Throwing a black tank on next she swiped the nearest pair of thigh high boots she owned and stepped into them as she walked, zipping them on the go. She could’ve just manifested her clothes… but this morning she was far too frazzled to remember.
Exiting her room she stopped by a small cabinet and grabbed a set of throwing knives she placed in the holders on her boots. Always had to be ready when training with Acheron. Hence the thigh highs…
Running down the stairs she was greeted by Simi. The petite demoness held a muffin and her favorite fingerless leather gloves. Smart girl…
“You know… I’ll keep you.” Marilla said, taking a huge bite out of the muffin as Simi helped her get the first glove on. The glove was tight over her knuckles where four rows of razor pointed silver studs lay. They weren’t high, but the points were sharp enough and did considerable damage. If she heated them enough they could help her hand slice right through an enemy… but she ruined a few pairs that way, so it was a last resort.
Simi smiled and wiggled the other glove on Marilla’s hand. She was in for it. The gauntlet had been laid… “You better get in there. And be careful when you walk in.”
Marilla nodded absently as she headed down the hall. Coming to the large double doors that led to the training room she stepped inside. The shades were pulled and she took the moment to let her eyes adjust. Thankfully she maintained her dark hunter sight, but it took a moment when she was accustomed to the light. Some of her powers hadn’t fully acclimated to being back home in her body just yet.
Quickly, she sprinted down the hall and slid to a halt inside the gym doors.
A blade whipped by her face, skimming her nose as it went and embedded itself to the wall on her left.
What the fuck! Ok… whoever threw that was gonna fix the wood.
Turning to her right to confront the person she saw a large man and the next thing she knew she was being picked up and wrestled to the floor.
Using her strength she shoved his arms apart and landed on her knees at his feet. He reached again, quickly for a human and she landed a punch to one knee. He had pads on… but it was enough to distract him as she rolled back onto her hands and flipped away to get a good look at her attacker.
She met his green eyes and watched as his blond hair flipped away from his face as he righted himself.
“Kyrian!” Marilla yelled. What the hell. Then she took in her surroundings. The room had been cleared of all equipment and on the floor were black taped lines sectioning off the room. Each one held another opponent, though she couldn’t see them. She wouldn’t see them until she stepped over the line.
The gauntlet. Acheron loved this technique and had only created it when they found out that not only could she block the drain, but Hector could also. Though she was never the poor sap to come through the door last. Damn being late! She slept like a rock and Hector no doubt hadn’t been able to wake her… now she was the last one here and therefore the first one to run Acheron’s little obstacle course of dark hunters.
Another blade skimmed her temple as she turned back to face the ex- dark hunter. A smile lit up his face and she saw the playfulness in his eyes.
“Its about time you got down here little one. Its been too long. And I’m mad at you missy… been in New Orleans for all this time and haven’t come to see me.” He shouted, bringing a kick toward her head.
Dropping to her knees she slid beneath his leg. Coming up behind him she caught him in the side under his arm with her elbow. He brought his other arm around and caught her neck in the crook of his elbow. He bent her back, her knees caving under her.
“Oh Kyrian… I wanted to… but I’ve been busy.” she gasped, dropping her weight and falling to the floor. Kyrian was caught off balance and stumbled. Marilla took her moment and swung her legs to catch his knee, dropping him.
With ease she rolled onto his body, pinning his hands under her knees as she straddled him. Pulling a blade from her boot she made a tiny cut on his cheek.
Opponent one eliminated.
“Get off me kid and let me give you a proper hug.” complying she crawled off him and pulled him up. Kyrian pulled her into his embrace for the first time in about 300 years. He had tried to talk her out of her deal with Hades. But she was stubborn. The look on his face now told her he was relieved to see her and nothing but kindness and warmth emanated from those big green eyes of his.
“Missed you kid.” Pulling back he gazed down at her with that knowing smile. She fought alongside Kyrian and Julian in Greece at Athena’s order. She had adored Kyrian the moment she saw him, and had she not been infatuated with Hector and had he not been married… well it was history now.
“I missed you too, and I’m sorry I didn’t get to see you. I’m hoping the invitation is still open.” Marilla asked.
“Yes it is. But don’t worry, now that I know you’re in town… I’ll make sure to pester you plenty.” Kyrian’s laugh filled the room and she felt him wrap his arms around her again. He had always taken care of her even though she was much older than he was and fully capable to taking care of herself. She never told him that though, deep down she liked his protective nature.
“Hector’s a good guy Mar, he’ll treat you right. And if not… I’ll slice him up.” she stared into those deep green eyes and knew he meant every word. She had no doubts either that Kyrian could hold his own against Hector. Especially when angry. She could remember the first night a man wandered into her tent looking for some fun. He caught her by surprise and her yell alerted Kyrian. It took Julian and three other men to pry him off her attacker. Suffice it to say, no one ever came calling to her tent out of fear of Kyrian and what he would do to them.
Not only that but Hector and Kyrian had spent time as Dark Hunters together and while she was recuperating she had heard Hector had been sent to New Orleans to work with Kyrian. Of course the three of them had their own escapades long ago. Granted… Artemis didn’t know about them, but there was a reason daimons were slain so easily in the dark ages. Being able to shield the drainage power had its perks. A smile crossed her face at the memories. In truth the three of them only hunted when it was necessary, or easy to get away with.
Patting his arm, she walked toward the other line. She couldn’t see anything in front of her except Acheron at the other end of the room. A smile was plastered to his face and she wanted to smack him. Oh she hated this game! Leave it to her best friend to create something she couldn’t stand.
“Who’s next Kyrian?”
“Tsk Tsk… you know the rules Mar Mar… cant tell you. Even so, I‘m not sure because I was last in.”
Rolling her eyes at the nick name… only he could call her that. She’d killed lesser men for uttering the ridiculous nick name, but not Kyrian.
“Dammit.” boldly she stepped forward and stopped across the line into the next area.
Stepping in she looked around. No one to her right, but there was a man to her left. He was tall… and describable with one word. Sex. He was pure sex… and he was gorgeous. His hair was blond and cropped short but still held small ringlets. He had his head down, propped against the wall with a sword in one hand.
She knew that sword and she knew that body. When she looked back to the mans face she saw those blue eyes watching her.
Julian!
“Come get me kitten.” he whispered. Picking his sword up and moving from the wall. His eyes twinkled and a smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He always enjoyed a good fight.
He hadn’t changed in all these years. Without another thought, Marilla picked a blade from her boot and threw it toward his face.
His sword deflected it in one swift move and then he was on her. She was left completely open and he weaved a dangerous dance as he rushed her with his sword.
This was how they used to train. The footing was the same, and his movements identical to 2000 years ago. The only thing that changed was his power. He was more formidable than before. She ducked and dodged his blade.
His eyes glinted with a smile as they made contact with hers.
“Missed you kitten, haven’t heard you in close to 1000 years. Been too long” He swung at her side and she dropped to her knees sliding under him and scrambled onto his back to get her mark her small blade ready. He was quick though. Julian dropped his sword and flipped her onto her back. She landed hard on the floor and her breath escaped her as he recovered his sword.
Bringing it to her face he paused.
“You didn’t free me though.” he whispered, smiling lovingly at her. Julian had been a close friend. Both him and Kyrian had taken it upon themselves to be her protector, even though her duty had been to protect them. Kyrian had been easy. He was an open book in those days. But Julian had been impossible.
She finally wormed her way into his heart though. She could still remember the battle. They had been victorious, like always. It had been the celebration after and she came upon a few men drunk and stupid. They had the nerve to put Julian down and Marilla’s temper won out like it always did.
She didn’t know Julian had been following her the whole time when she came upon the three men. She didn’t even remember the fight to be honest. She only remembered her fist connecting with the largest man’s face before the other two were on her. When the dust finally settled she stood over the three of them and screamed at them to shut up and remember who their leader was.
When she turned to find Julian standing beside her, she immediately noticed the change. His eyes were soft, and it was the first time she saw him smile at something other than victory. That day they became friends.
A smile came to her face as she felt his blade stroke her face and met his gaze. That same smile graced his features and the warmth in his eyes was sincere.
“I’m sorry Julian. I wont lie… I always wondered… but we were friends. I couldn’t desecrate you that way. You deserved more.”
“You begged Athena to free me.”
Marilla nodded. She had received the book from some woman when she was on leave. The story had been told, and she knew what it was. To say she hadn’t been tempted was an understatement. But she knew the Julian that would step from that page would not be her friend. Marilla had refused to bring him forth and possibly hurt him. After turning to Athena for help and the Goddess being unable, she found out how the curse occurred.
She had even stormed Priapus’ temple and laid it to waste in her anger. He had always been a sniveling little brat! Lucky for him it was only his temple. He was pissed to say the least, but he couldn’t touch her. He knew he wouldn’t win, but he called a favor for the incident and Athena made her pay. She delivered him a fine virgin for his loss. Not a big deal, but enough to irritate her.
“Thanks Kitten.” he whispered and as he moved to scratch her cheek she sent saw his jaw bleed.
She had caught him with her small blade as she came over his head and neither felt it. He had knocked it free from her hand when he flipped her, but she still caught him seconds before it left her fingers.
“Julian I got you.”
Reaching up he wiped his jaw and saw blood. A scowl came over his face and he dropped his sword.
“Well damn! Fine, you won! Get off your ass and give me a hug.”
Jumping up she wrapped her arms around his neck and laid a kiss to his cheek. He returned the sentiment and set her back on her feet.
“Congrats on the family ’Dad’. I hear they are lovely. Hopefully I can do babysitting duty some day?”
“Umm, you will be doing family duty missy. Don’t think I’m letting you off as easy as Kyrian. You have Sunday dinners and family holidays to be attending. And of course other events. Yeah you have a lot to make up.”
“Yes sir commander.” Marilla said, standing back to salute in customary style.
His laughter rang out and she heard Kyrian’s as well as he stepped to stand by his friend. The fighters could step across lines once the two stages had been passed. She felt at home as she looked upon their faces. There they were. The two bravest men she had ever had the pleasure of fighting along side.
“Oh yeah… same thing goes. I fully expect to get to know this Hector. Kyrian already knows him, and while I trust his judgement, I still need to decide.”
Marilla rolled her eyes. Oh this was good. Sighing, she merely nodded, knowing Julian was serious. At least Kyrian had known him as a Dark Hunter.
“Hey you three! I didn’t set this up to be a stop and chat session! Get to it Marilla. You will have plenty of time to catch up and reminisce later.” Acheron yelled, meaning business.
Julian smacked her butt and pushed her toward the next line. Yeah… she would’ve broken his hand had he not been Julian.
“Might as well get this show on the road.”
The next few stages were a blur.
Stepping into the next stage she instantly felt a hand wrap around her throat. The prick of something sharp assaulted her neck in five places and as her body left the ground and was raised high in the air she met a dark pair of eyes.
“Hey Tasty.” she heard him growl.
“What up Z.” She gasped, holding onto his forearm for leverage. Her skin instantly began to heat and drew the sharp tips into her skin, not leaving a single mark. Before he knew she let loose an arrow from her hand. It was small but it clipped his ear when he threw her.
Marilla rolled into the next stage and her eyes widened as a pair of strong thigh s straddled above her. Two blades flew over her face and quickly she rolled to her back, feeling one catch her shirt, but no skin. The other caught her boot as she scurried out of the way.
That was it! Her shirt she could handle… but not her boots!
Whirling around as she stood she saw him. The little celt.
“Talon, I’m going to cut up your pants for that.”
“Ha! Bring it on baby girl.” She lunged for him and dodged his next attack. Quickly she knocked one blade from one hand and as the other came for her she turned her back into his chest and watched it move by as it caught the skin of his other arm.
Quickly she deflected that blade before he could draw it back to her.
“Does that count as a hit Ash!” She yelled as Talon’s arms wrapped around her. He held her with one arm as another reached for a small blade in her boot. Quickly she brought her head back into his and he dropped her.
“Damn Marilla!” he yelled, holding his nose as she reached for a blade and threw it.
“No it doesn’t count. And no more absorption Marilla, you used it on Zarek.”
“Damnit” she cursed as Talon caught her blade. He threw it back and it lodged to the hilt in the floor, holding her shirt to the ground.
It happened in the blink of an eye. Marilla drew her blade the instant he was on her and they both froze. She felt blood spill down her cheek but watched as his blood stained the floor. She had caught forearm… but who got who first?
“Who was it?” Talon whispered.
“Marilla, by a second. In fact you slid into her blade Talon.”
“Damnit” Talon jumped up and pulled Marilla to her feet after she dislodged the blade from the floor.
Before either of them had time to say their hello’s Acheron appeared and shoved Marilla into the next stage.
“See you in a bit Marilla!” Talon yelled as she disappeared across the next line.
The smile faded off Marilla’s face as she came face to face with her next opponent.
“Well well… out of Hell I see. Now lets see how soft you’ve become since being a bedmate for 100 years.” Valerius commented as Marilla felt her world go dark.
The room heard the scream coming from the area Marilla was in. Both Kyrian and Julian knew that scream. That wasn’t a cry for help, it was a battle cry. The façade lifted as Marilla’s dark energy burst through the spell. Kyrian, Julian, Zarek and Talon all turned to see Marilla face off with Valerius.
Acheron and Hector stepped close, ready for the worst.
Acheron knew the two didn’t like each other. He just didn’t think Valerius was stupid enough to throw the Hades thing in Marilla’s face.
Course… he had been wrong before. Before Acheron could move to pull Marilla out of the area, he felt her barrier go up and he was powerless to step inside. The six men stood outside an invisible barrier and watched Valerius circle Marilla.
This was not good.
