My heart leaped into my throat. I couldn't breathe. The edges of my vision went black and I felt myself falling. Next thing I knew, I was waking up in a large plush four poster bed, staring up at the sweeping canopy above me.
"You are awake." The voice next to me sounded relieved, but I dreaded turning my head to look at the man seated next to me. "My healers said the stress of losing your home and being separated from your friends and family caused you to faint. I am relieved to see you are okay." Galbatorix sounded genuine, but I still did not trust him, and I could not bring myself to answer him.
"Rest a little while longer, my love," he murmured as he leaned close to me. "I will send someone in to take care of you. You will not want for anything anymore." I lay silent, staring at the soft blue fabric above me and waited for him to leave. When the door clicked shut, I let the tears burning in my eyes flow freely. I curled up into a tight ball and wept. When the door snicked open, I didn't even look up. At that point, I was not sure I cared who came or went. I wanted to be alone.
I felt a small hand gently stroking my hair, and the mattress dipped as someone sat next to me. "Shh now dear, you are safe here."
The kind voice made me pull back and wipe my eyes enough to see a woman smiling softly down at me. She reminded me so much of the village women I grew up around, and of my mother, that I began to cry again. "Oh, dear, that won't do," she tutted, standing up. She walked around the room, straightening things up, and pulling other things out. She pulled out a large metal washtub and began filling it with steaming water and scented oils. When the tub was full she came back to the bed. "Come now, dear, let's get you washed up and I'll take you for a little walk." She pulled the blankets to the end of the bed and helped me up.
"I know these last few days have been very hard on you and your village," she said as she started to unlace the back of the gown I was still wearing. "You will see it may be for the better you are here." The gown pooled at my feet and I stepped out of the circle of fabric. The woman continued talking as she helped me out of my shift and into the tub. I numbly let her lead me through the motions, barely registering what she was trying to tell me. "Galbatorix has never taken a bride, never hinted that he was planning to. Now I think about it though, he has been ordering women brought to him more often, especially from far off villages." She scrubbed my hair and let me soak in the scented water as she spoke. "Honestly dear, you should count yourself lucky you were chosen by the king. Some of the soldiers can be quite ruthless. But I guess you would know that..." She trailed off gently as I sank farther into the water, trying to escape the truth of her words. My body still smarted from the violation the night before, but I was thankful he had not compromised my virtue more.
The woman helped me out of the tub when she deemed me clean enough, and helped me dry off. I realized then that I had not done anything to take care of myself. A warm flush crept up my face and I reached to take the cloth from her hands to dry myself, but she stopped me. "No, no, dearie, you are the King's betrothed now, you don't ever have to worry about anything again."
I found my voice. "That means I can't do things for myself anymore?" The woman paused halfway up my left leg.
"Well, I guess that is why he sent me in to care for you. But I have not yet met someone to object at being taken care of."
"Let me be the first then. I lived on a farm, I am accustomed to taking care of myself. It would be too difficult to let you do everything for me when I am perfectly capable of doing it myself."
She smiled at me. "I hear what you are saying, dear, but the king would not be happy with me if I did not take proper care of you. Just relax and let me take care of things for you. When you become queen, you will not be allowed to do much anyway, so you should get used to it now while you have the chance."
She continued her ministrations and soon I was dry and dressed in a brand new gown made of the softest cotton I had ever felt. It was a soft lilac color, and had matching slippers that almost felt as though I wasn't even wearing shoes but for the hard bottom. She sat me in a low chair and brushed out my hair for me, the golden tresses trailing over my back and shoulders. "I can see why the king chose you, dear. You are beautiful. And your hair is magnificent." She twisted locks together in intricate knots and pinned them to my head. "One last thing," she murmured softly, coming around to stand in front of me. She held a beautiful circlet in her hands. It swirled around itself like water, and in the center was a beautiful soft purple stone. She set the circlet on my head and twisted a few more strands of hair around it to keep it in place. "There, all finished. Now lets go take that walk."
"What's your name?" I took her arm as she reached for the door handle, stopping her and turning her toward me. She looked at me in surprise. I realized we were the same height.
"Kiandra, dear. Why do you ask?"
I smiled at her. "So I know what to call my new friend." She smiled brightly at me and opened the door.
"Are you ready to see the place you will be living?" Together, we stepped through the door. Everywhere we went there was something new to see, more people to meet. Everyone that we passed stopped what they were doing and bowed of curtsied, and stepped out of the way so we could pass. I smiled politely at them all but every time a soldier bowed, or a waitingwoman curtsied, I cringed. I would never be able to get used to this type of treatment.
Paintings of dragons were everywhere, spaced with portraits of Galbatorix. There were statues between each painting, and around every corner a new scene, a new image. The palace was massive, and I knew then I would never be able to get around without someone leading me. I recognized a few of the paintings and finally looked forward. We were at the huge doors leading into the hall. My heart sank. I wasn't sure I ever wanted to see this place again. Kiandra wordlessly pushed the doors open and in we went. She led me to the top of the hall and the raised dais where the king was seated when we had first arrived. Only now, there were two thrones. Just as we reached the dais, another door hidden off to the side in the shadows opened, and out walked the king, followed by the black clad youth that had brought me here earlier.
Kiandra turned to me. "I am to be your lady in waiting. I will help you with anything you need, and will be there to take care of you. I will be right behind you the entire time, like Murtagh for the king." She ushered me up the stairs to the smaller of the two thrones and made me sit down. She fussed over my skirt for a moment, and made sure I was sitting up straight and tall. I looked over to my left, and Galbatorix was already seated and watching me intently. A sad smile spread over his face.
"I hate to put you through this my darling but it has to be done. I am going to have to teach my soldiers a lesson." He gestured to Murtagh, and the boy went to open the doors. As he walked back, I could tell he was purposely blocking the view of the man he was leading. When they reached the dais, Murtagh continued forward, and behind him I could see a man bowing deeply. He was dressed in a fine uniform, clean and unwrinkled. It looked like it was rarely worn. He stood up straight and I recognized the captain who had violated me.
"Your Majesty, let me just say I was most pleased to hear you had summoned me here to speak with-" He stopped speaking abruptly when he saw me seated there next to the king. The color drained from his face and he started to sweat.
"Ah, so you do know why I called you here. You committed a serious offense against my future queen, and therefore must be punished." The man before us started to visibly tremble in fear. "However, because she was not at the time promised to me, I cannot have you executed." Relief showed on the man's pale face. "Be that as it may, you have still committed a despicable and unspeakable crime against a woman. So it is my decision that you will be stripped of your rank and banished to the depths of the Hadarac Desert. You may take with you what you will need to survive but no more. My decision has been made and my word is final. Go now."
I watched with some amusement as the man scampered from the hall as if the hounds of hell were at his heels. Then I remembered where i was and what was happening to me.
"Now that that miserable business is over, we can turn our attention to a more pleasant affair. Come! We have a wedding to plan!"
