“You will not fall out Master Chuin. Once we leave Earth’s atmosphere the moth will automatically seal the doors. It is only a short trip to the Lexx.” Kai was reassuring Chuin.

“The wings are firmly attached? They will not fall off?” Chuin asked.

“No the wings will not fall off, Little Father. Just get in so we can go.” Said Remo.

Stanley and Xev made sure that there was a second moth available for Kai’s use. It was the first thing that they had done, leaving a message for him to join them on the Lexx. They were now on the moon collecting rocks.

The sound of a squawker going off drew Kai’s attention. “Kai, good. We are almost ready to head back to the Lexx, 790 says we have enough rocks to extract the elements he needs. We’ll see you there.” Xev’s voice said.

“We are leaving for the Lexx now.” Kai replied. “Remo and Chuin are accompanying me. I will need to go into cryostasis as soon as I arrive. My protoblood is very low.”

“Do you have enough to make it back?” Xev asked.

“It should be sufficient. Protoblood failure is not yet eminent.”

“Protoblood failure?” Remo asked.

Yes if my protoblood expires or goes below a certain level my systems start to shutdown. I malfunction resulting in incoherent speech, loss of motor control and eventual collapse. The symptoms are not dissimilar to a living person progressing from mild inebriation to severe alcohol poisoning.”

“So what do we do if it happens? If you have this protoblood failure?” Remo asked.

“You will need to pilot the moth. Simply use the joystick to direct it where you want it to go. It will fly itself. Use the squawker to contact Xev and she will come to lead you into the Lexx.” Kai said handing him the squawker. “However I believe that we will be aboard the Lexx well before it will be a problem if we leave now.”

“Then what are you waiting for?” Chuin asked settled into the passenger seat of the moth.

“Hell Stanley, Xev, 970.” Kai said.

“You cut it really close Dead man.” Stanley said.

“It is staged first.” Kai replied.

“How long has he been like this?” Xev asked.

“He just started sounding like Yoda about five minutes ago.” Remo replied.

“This is the failure of protoblood he spoke of?” Chuin asked.

“Yeah the first stage.” Stanley said. “We get about a half hour of a dead drunk before he actually starts physically losing control. Come on Kai, time to go nighty night in your cryopod.”

“709 to make protoblood?” Kai asked.

“Yes dead and dreamy. The first batch is almost done. We must test it so I only made a small amount.” 790 replied.

“Wake test not much.” Kai babbled. “Xevley, Stan, careful set cryopod. Brace Remo protect.”

“What did he just say?” Remo asked.

“He said not to give him too much of the test batch of protoblood when we wake him. He wants Stanley and Xev to be extra careful that the control setting on the cryopod is correct.” 790 said.

“And the Remo brace part?” Chuin asked.

“Oh that was not important.” 790 said casually.

“He asked you to keep him from bracing us if he wakes up wrong or if the protoblood causes him to malfunction. If we only give him a tiny amount he will use it very quickly.” Xev said.

“And go back into protoblood failure.” Stan added.

“Yes she said what.” Kai agreed.

“Come on Kai, lets get you to the cryochamber before you collapse, I know how heavy you are.” Stan said.

“Mr Prince, it seems that your nemesis is just as durable as my own. The failure of your forces to engage them in battle did not help the data collecting.” Mr Gordons stated. “I must see him in action, as I have with the two masters. This may reveal some weakness that we may exploit.”

“I can only reveal one weakness that I know of. His two companions, Stanley Tweedle and Xev Bellringer. He seems to consider it his ‘divine’ duty to protect them at all costs.” Prince noted.

“Then we must find a way to endanger them.” Mr Gordons surmised. I believe that we must make use of your resources again Mr Prince. I noted that you have several contacts among the less savory types.

We have been concentrating on your nemesis. You have a resource that will guarantee that my nemesis also gets involved. Perhaps it is time we try a different line of attack.” Mr Gordon’s said.

Harold Smith looked up as Ruby entered his office with a cup of tea. She sat it on the desk in front of him. “You are working too hard Smitty. You should get some rest. That computer will be there tomorrow.”

“I know Ruby, but Gordons is back. He’s allied himself with Isambard Prince.” Smith said.

“Head of the ATF Prince?? That disappeared about a month or so ago?” She questioned.

“One and the same.” Smith said.

“That’s not good. There were some rumors at ATF headquarters about him. Everyone connected with those rumors disappeared before he did except for the former Deputy Director Sam Wells. Mr Wells is doing the Thorazine shuffle in a mental institution outside of Norfolk, Va. It seems Mr Wells publicly insisted that Prince was not human.

You and I have known Remo and Chuin long enough to know that everything cannot be explained and some things that seem impossible are indeed true. Perhaps Mr Wells needs a change of scenery?” She said slyly.

“I believe you are right Ruby, Mr Wells would get much better care here at Folcroft. You’ll see to it?” Smith grimaced in what his staff had come to understand was actually a smile.

“Consider it done.” She said.

“Kai has exceptional reflexes.” Chuin noted as he once again positioned himself to deflect the brace. “He attacks as the chamber opens.”

This was the sixth test batch but 790 had announced that they were making progress. With the first test batch Kai had coldly announced “I kill you now in the name of His Divine Shadow” and fired his brace. Only Chuin’s lightening fast reflexes and Remo grabbing Xev had kept her head attached to her shoulders. Then Remo and Chuin had to wrestle him back into the cryopod.

By the third batch they had worked out a system of Chuin acting as bait and Remo positioned to keep Kai inside. Good thing they had because Kai had stopped announcing his intentions and just attacked. With the fifth batch he had hesitated for several seconds before once again calling on the name of the Divine Shadow and attacking.

“How is this progress?” Remo asked as he once again managed to stuff Kai back inside the cryopod. “He’s still hell bent on killing us.”

“No he is not, this time he hesitated much longer before the attack occurred. There was also increased brain activity outside of the program. He is fighting the urge to kill when he awakens. He is ‘hell bent’ on not killing you.

It’s these last two elements that must be at a precise balance. We are very close now. We will see what happens with a minor adjustment.” 790 said as he accessed the protein regenerator changing the mix and recording it.

“Stanley, if we can make Kai a new supply of protoblood, he won’t need the cryopod anymore. He can stay animated as long as he likes.” Xev said.

“Yeah, I know.” Stanley said pushing his green goo around his plate. “Remo says that 790 has almost got the mix right, so Kai can stay with us forever. Or at least until we die.”

“Stanley you don’t sound very happy.” Xev observed.

“I guess I’m having second thoughts. I did this without ever asking or thinking about what Kai wants. I did it because I would miss him. I didn’t think about whether or not Kai wants to keep existing Xev. More than once he’s said ‘the dead just want to be dead’.”

“Stanley, Kai is a part of our family. He’s been with us for 4000 years. Why wouldn’t he want to stay with us?”

“Because his only motivation has been to take care of us Xev. When have we ever thought about what he wants? He does what we ask him to, he defers to us, he saves our lives over and over again. Maybe he does want to be dead. Maybe after 6000 years the guy just wants to rest in peace instead of babysitting us.” Stanley said.

“Stanley, I appreciate the thought of you considering my wants, but the dead do not have wants.” Kai said entering the galley carrying 790, Remo and Chin followed him.

“Kai it worked!” Stanley said as Xev rushed over to give Kai a kiss and a hug.

“Yes Stanley it worked. I do not need to worry about running out of protoblood, thank you.”

“Are you sure that you want to thank me? I mean you can go on existing forever now.”

“Stanley I do not have wants to matter, but you and Xev want me to remain with you. Since I do not have wants, I will borrow yours.”
