Chapter Five
The finals had begun and I was seated down opposite Daniel. Fortune had smiled and we had come out of the hat next to each other. One of us was going to go to the finals and one was not.
Daniel had a perfectly blank look on his face and his eyes were looking all over me, as if expecting me to draw a knife from my sleeve. So I rolled up my sleeves on purpose to show there was nothing there, and he seemed to become more suspicious.
“Let the games begin,” I said softly.
“I am so going to clean your clock,” Daniel threatened.
I sat down and offered up a fist for ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock’. Daniel beat me with scissors beating paper. Daniel took the white and played first.
“Gonna make a bad starter move?” Daniel offered. I put a pawn forward two spaces. “Looks like you are.” Daniel started playing and the game continued.
I kept my eyes down on the board for a while, doing my best to remember what dad had taught me and how to play. For some reason I knew every good move to make. He moved a bishop there so I moved a knight here.
While this intuitive playing went on, I looked up at him. My mind cleared while I looked at him thinking. All my emotions that so wanted to ram has bishop pieces up his nose turned to that lustful want that I kept. His short dark hair was gelled nicely and his pale skin still looked beautiful. I looked at his mouth and the shape it made when he was contemplating. I’d seen him making the same face when doing tests in class. Must be a subconscious thing. He then looked up at me and we looked at each other for a long moment. One of those moments where you are not sure what it is you are sharing. Then his gaze narrowed a bit and he waved a hand in front of me.
“Yo, space cadet, it’s your move!” I came back to earth and looked down at the board. “Take a photo Jerry, it’ll last longer.” Daniel clearly worked out I’d been looking at him. I’m sure the comments would have been harsher if Mr. Murray wasn’t in earshot.
By about half way through our time the pieces were widely scattered and Daniel was getting the upper hand, however I seemed to be putting up a better fight than usual.
Finally, the moment that I had been waiting for arrived. Daniel moved his queen to a bad square, because it was only protected by a pawn. My knight moved in and took it, and while he took my knight, my queen was still on the field.
“Lose something?” I asked, holding up the queen.
“I can win without her,” Daniel snapped. He moved a bishop across the board to take a castle, and the game continued. Daniel was starting to shed pieces, and his capturing of mine was less successful.
I even baited him for a while, letting him think he was going to get a pawn to become a queen, and then took it at the last moment. Finally, time was up and I pinned down his king and won the game.
“Checkmate,” I said flatly. Daniel was either going to cry or melt away into disappointment. He looked so defeated. I put my hand out but he refused to take it. I shrugged, got patted on the back by Bronson and Mr. Murray moved my name up to the top three.
My wish had come true. I had made it to the top three.
I accepted the third place trophy and thanked Mr. Murray. He had that disappointed look again because I had told him I was finishing with the Chess Club. I started to feel really bad. I looked at the people around me: Mr. Murray, Daniel, Corey, Steven and everyone else. Even Dad popped into my mind. I had caused a lot of disappointment. It hadn’t dawned on me that I had taken something people wanted, or that I had raised people’s hopes.
When the bell had gone for the end of lunch I put the trophy in my locker and then went to a study hall class. The end of my week is quiet studying and, for today at least, contemplation. I felt really bad. I wanted the trophy, but I didn’t deserve it. My contemplation of what to do took up the whole time and I didn’t get any homework done.
I decided I’d go talk to Mr. Murray and asked who would have come forth. Perhaps my guilt would go away if I gave the trophy to them.
Wouldn’t you believe my luck? It was Daniel. His scoring had led him to come forth, and I somehow had to pass the trophy to him. How I was going to do that, I wasn’t sure.
As I was walking down the deserted passageway, I was suddenly stopped by someone cheering and clapping. As I stepped back, I saw it was Clarissa.
“Oh well done! Third place! Congratulations!” Clarissa cheered happily.
“Thank you, but I didn’t deserve it.” I answered.
“Well you wished for it,” Clarissa protested.
“I know, and it was mainly because I didn’t believe you, and now I feel selfish because of it. I detest Daniel, even if he is attractive, and he has earned this trophy. I stole it.”
“Well, it is time for another wish.” Clarissa wiggled her fingers eagerly.
“I’ve got nothing right now,” I said.
“Well, take this with you,” Clarissa put a hand into her bag and pulled out a small red crystal on a necklace. She put it around my neck. “Whenever you have a wish, say it and it will come to you.” I looked down. The necklace suited me, so I thanked her and went on my way.
Saturday dawned and I had a day of sitting in my room contemplating between my homework and my moral compass. I decided that, despite every pang of guilt and reluctance, I was going to call Daniel and organize to meet with him.
The phone call was, in short, unenthused. Daniel seemed surprised to get a call from me and his tone was flat and indifferent. We agreed to meet at a small park close to both of our places. I got on my bike and rode over. Daniel was waiting by the swings as I rode up.
“What do you want Jerry?” he asked.
“To give you this,” I said, passing him the trophy.
“What for?” Daniel asked, surprised as he took it.
“You earned it, not me.”
“I don’t want it,” Daniel said, shoving it back to me.
I couldn’t believe it. The jerk couldn’t handle that I was forfeiting to him.
“Do you want me to admit I cheated? Is that what you want?” I demanded.
“I already know you did. You’re such a bastard for doing it.”
“Well you know what Daniel, you can be happy because you’re the winner here, I’m leaving chess club, enjoy beating everyone!” I yelled, shoving the trophy into him.
“Why should I? I’m not taking this so you can feel better about yourself.”
“Yeah, why should he?” A voice asked. I turned to see Corey. This was getting better and better.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“I happened to be at Daniel’s when you called. Knew you cheated. I wanna know how.”
“Screw you if you think I’m letting that much on.”
“Well you’re a fucking bastard and we are going to punch your head in, unless you can give us a reason not to.” Daniel balled up a fist and I knew I’d take it if I didn’t think of something. Sadly, my mouth was faster than my sense for survival.
“Jeez, I wish you’d get fucked Daniel. That way you’d probably be nicer to everyone.”
What happened was a flash of red light that I couldn’t explain, I could have sworn I saw Clarissa pass between two trees in the distance, and then Daniel’s fist collided with my stomach and it was on.
I was home half an hour later, no trophy (Corey had taken it) and a bloody nose, aches and pains plus mum nursing me with tissues.
“I want to know what happened.” Mum demanded of me.
“Daniel and Corey ganged up on me when I was at the park getting some air.” I continued.
“Well that is not good enough.” Mum said. “I heard you on the phone. You didn’t provoke him did you?”
“Not by intention,” I mumbled.
“Well then explain yourself,” Dad said, as he entered the rom.
“Not you too,” I sighed.
“Yes me too,” Dad answered.
“What did you do this time?” Rhys asked as he came downstairs.
“Oh for the love of God,” I growled.
“Will you please start talking?” mum asked.
“I wish you’d all take a hike.” The instant I said it, I knew it was exactly the wrong thing to say.
