I walked down the sidewalk with my older brother Louise. Laughing as he told me about the shenanigans of the senior boy and his friends.
“Kyle totally tripped on his way over to say hi to Ashley, and then tried to play it off like half of the school didn’t see it?” He said chuckling at his best friend’s stupid actions.
I let out a light giggle in response.
“Kyle has always been a dork Louy. Give him some slack,” I responded, a grin stretched across my face.
We heard a rustling of a bush behind us. We turned to look but didn’t see anything suspicious.
“Probably a squirrel or some shit,” Louise said with a soft sigh.
I nodded in agreement, but something still felt off. Still, I figured that I was just being paranoid and we continued our walk home. If only I had put more stock into the rustling bushes we seemed to hear as we walked home from school each day. If only I had put more thought into the fact that more people than usual seemed to choose our street to walk down at the same time we did. Maybe, just maybe, I could still be living my life the same as before. We made it home and Louise helped me with my homework. Two siblings, just enjoying their time together with no idea what was to come that night. No idea that a beast had been stalking me for weeks. No idea that beast had decided to strike that night, to eat an entire family whole without a second thought.
After dinner and spending more time with my brother I turned in for the night, falling into a peaceful sleep. I had no idea how long I had been asleep for when I woke up to a loud sound. I shot up, sitting upright in my bed, my ears straining to hear what was going on. My ears began to pick up sounds, following right after one another. Glass breaking, heavy boot-clad footsteps downstairs. I jumped out of bed and silently rushed to my bedroom door, pressing my ear against it. I heard the heavy footsteps make their way upstairs.
A burglar? Out this far? I thought briefly. My senses kicked in and I quickly, but quietly grabbed my phone from its place on my nightstand and hid inside my closet. With a shaky hand, I dialed 911. I heard screams coming from the room next to me, my parents' room. Tears began to roll down my face as I heard my mother's cries of agony.
“911, what is the address of your emergency?” The lady on the other end of my phone asked rather blandly.
“I live on 838 Pine Street,” I frantically whispered into the phone. “S-someone broke into my house. They’re killing my parents, please send the police. Please” I begged my voice never rising above a whisper, thinking that I’d get killed if they found me.
“Of course, the police are on their way. Please stay on the phone with me until they get there,” She informed, her tone more serious.
“O-Okay,” I whispered into the receiver of my cell phone.
The screams of my mother had finally ceased and the house momentarily went quiet. I heard Louise shout at the intruder, threatening to kill him if he didn’t leave. All I ever heard in response was a deep, sinister laugh echo through the house. Only a few moments later my brother let out a single, distressed scream before the house fell silent again.
“P-please hurry, I think he hurt my brother,” I whispered into the phone, now panicking that I’m probably next.
“Hold on sweetie, they'll be there soon, just stay on the line with me ok?” She said in a feeble attempt to comfort me.
I heard my bedroom door open. I covered my mouth to try to silence my breath so that the beast in my room wouldn’t hear.
“Come out, come out wherever you are~” he called out in a sing-song voice.
I brought my knees to my chest and didn’t move an inch, scared of what he was going to do once he found me, convinced that I was going to be this maniac’s next victim. I heard him walk around my bed and stop. He’s probably looking underneath it.
“Come on, Kora, don’t keep me waiting. You might not like what happens to people who keep me waiting,” The beast warned, his voice seeming to inhabit the entire room.
My eyes widened at the realization that he knows my name. Just how long had this monster been stalking me, watching me from the shadows before he pounced?
“Haven’t you made me wait long enough?” He questioned angrily. “You don’t know how many years I waited for you, Kora. Waited for you to finally be born. Waiting for you to finally get old enough to make you mine.” He growled loudly.
What the hell was he talking about? I don’t remember this. Is this a product of being in a dream?
“Do you not understand how insane it drove me, watching you talk to other guys? How much I wanted to slash every guy's throat who even dared to approach and flirt with what’s mine?” He questioned as if the answer had been the most obvious thing in the world. “I’m not a patient man, Kora, and I’ve already waited for far too long for you, so you need to come out.” The last sentence coming through the doors of the closet.
He was standing right outside. As soon as we heard the sirens of approaching police cars he threw the doors wide open, revealing my frightened form in the corner of the dark closet. I looked up at the man who changed my life forever. His pale skin illuminated by the bright moon. His burnt black hair fell slightly into his face as he cocked his head to the side. It’s then I notice the smile, the scars carved into his cheeks, giving him a permanent smile. Even though his smile was already wide, it seemed to widen more at the sight of me.
“There you are, Kora, time to bring you home, love,” He cooed as he grabbed a patch of my long auburn hair and dragged me out of my hiding place.
“NO! DON’T PLEASE! LET ME GO!” I screamed as I thrashed wildly, trying to get him to lose his grip on me.
“No can do, dear, I’ve already waited longer than you could imagine. It’s my turn to be with you now,” he hissed, anger at my resistance clear in his voice.
He dragged me to my bedroom window and opened it. He hoisted me onto his shoulder as if I weighed nothing to him. He positioned himself to balance on the windowsill.
“Brace yourself, I’m going to jump,” He stated, and before I even had a chance to respond we were falling to the ground.
I let out a terrified scream as we hit the ground. My kidnapper laughed at my reaction and then took off running into the forest, never to see my home or my friends or my family ever again.
