The next morning, every man aboard the Jolly Rodger was tired and in very poor spirits. Not very many, if any, got sleep. Something was indeed going on, for it was not usual for nightmares to come to so many at one time. They had not even been in a battle of any sort to cause such a wide spread epidemic as this.
James came back into the cabin finding Caitlin sitting at the table with a blanket wrapped around her. “Smee will be up shortly with some coffee my dear.” Hook said, putting his hand on her shoulder as he walked by, giving her a comforting touch. Cat looked up at him a moment knowing that he had to be as tired as she. James pulled a chair closer to hers and sat down next to her. “It seems we were not the only ones stricken with this plague of unfathomable misery. Nearly every last man aboard got as much sleep as we did.”
Hook looked away from her a moment glancing around the cabin, trying to figure out what strange sort of sorcery had decided to take a shot at them now. “James . . .” Cat said softly looking at him. “What’s going on? We can’t go forever without any sleep.” She was obviously extremely tired, and feeling weak. Her skin started to grow a sickly gray color as she raised her hand to her forehead.
“I wish I had an answer Caitlin . . . . .” He glanced at her for a moment, but stopped his words cold. “Caitlin . . . . are you feeling alright?” She took a few deep breaths, raising her hand to her forehead again. James got up quickly and helped her to her feet. Putting his arm around her waist, he hustled her outside of the cabin getting her to the rail just in time for the contents of her stomach to vacate the premises. After a few moments Caitlin stood up from hanging over the side and wiped her mouth, looking
away from James feeling extremely embarrassed.
Morning sickness. There was no other explanation for this sort of reaction. “I’m sorry James. . . . it’s some sort of sea sickness, I’m sure it will clear up soon.” She said softly still looking away from him. Hook watched her for a moment having a strange feeling deep within him. Quickly he shook his head and pushed it aside.
“Yes, I am certain it will flee before too long.” Taking out his handkerchief he handed it to her. Cat took it and held it to her mouth. As she turned and looked over the deck she saw more crewmen then usual out and about. “Are you feeling better now my dear?”
“Yes . . . I just needed some air I think. James? . . . . why are so many above deck? Did you call some sort of meeting?” She said looking at him, knowing they gathered when he ordered it.
James sighed and looked in the same direction as she, “They do not wish to be in the dark. Above deck there is always light, even after the sun has gone down. The eerie glow of moonlight is better then no light at all.” Caitlin sighed softly looking towards the shore.
“What a strange land this is James. Sometimes it’s the most beautiful sight I’ve seen, other times . . . . it holds terrors I’ve never dared to dream of. I had these sorts of dreams before, but after you explained to me it was that little pixie I understood them. Now . . . . now I just don’t know.” Hook walked up beside her looking towards her eyes for a moment. Reaching up he ran his fingertips over her cheek. Was it possible her skin had become softer, and a glow was in her eyes? Even with her sickness, and going without sleep, she seemed even more beautiful then ever before. The child perhaps? No, it couldn’t be. All child baring did for women was make them old and their bodies misshapen. Caitlin turned suddenly looking at him, “James… I would like to go to shore.”
Hook just looked at her for a moment, “What on earth for?” It seemed like a strange request at this point in time.
“I want to find Danny. I get a strange feeling deep inside that he’s in trouble. He tried so very hard to help me when I was captured.” Hook just stared at her for a moment before starting to protest. Cat shook her head quickly and reached for his hand drawing closer to him, “No . . . James please. He helped you find me, you told me yourself that he did. He may be a lost boy but he’s still just a child, and there is nothing in his mind or soul that wants to kill anyone. . . . he certainly doesn’t want to harm me, and I know he wouldn’t try to hurt you.”
James groaned slightly as she just seemed to use up all of his breath along with her own with her argument. Looking into her eyes for several moments, how could he say no to her? After everything that she had been through? At the very least he could allow her to see him if that was what she wished. “Alright . . . we will go to shore tomorrow.” Cat’s eyes lit up hearing this, James thought it best to tell her the conditions before she got too excited. “However . . . he can not come back aboard the ship with us, he is still a lost boy and I will not have a war started on his behalf. If a war is going to occur it shall be on my terms, and not because we are accused of capturing one of their kin.” Caitlin nodded knowing that this was a big exception to his rules he was making for her. Before, he had forbid her just to speak his name much less see him.
Giving a sigh as he gazed at her he wondered. All he ever wanted for her was to take care of her and make her happy. Perhaps a child would accomplish just that. A joy beyond words that she could have a child of her own, to watch over, to nurture and take care of . . . . and take hours of time of her, taking it away from himself.
“Capt’n?” Smee’s voice came breaking the silence. Hook turned and gave him a deadly look, hating to be interrupted when he and his wife were spending time together, having a conversation. Smee took a step back knowing that look all to well. “Uh . . . it’s the doc, he wants to see ye.” James looked at Caitlin a moment before kissing her cheek.
“Go back inside dear. I shall join you shortly.” Caitlin was too tired to argue and just nodded a bit before going back inside. James turned and looked a Smee stepping closer. “This endeavor I have begun with the surgeon is to remain silent. If it reaches her ears, I shall cut off yours!” Smee nodded quickly as James pushed passed him and headed for the infirmary. As Hook walked past a large coil of rope on the deck, a pair of emerald green eyes stared at him. Once he had disappeared into the walkway that led to the lower decks, Danny’s small head poked out from the rope to make sure the way was clear.
As the locks and latches were pulled back, James entered to find the doc standing over the table where he was pouring the mixture into a container. Hook stepped forward watching him a moment. Liam glanced towards him as he continued his task. “It’s ready Capt’n. Took quite a bit of skill.” Closing the container he gave it to the Captain. “Are ye gonna tell me what it’s for?” James reached out and snatched it away from the doctor.
“I do not personally see how it is any concern of yours.” Hook said looking at the container. Liam just stood there starring at him. He was up to something, but what? What could he possibly be playing at? He crossed his arms looking at James before speaking.
“I’m the ships surgeon Capt’n. If somethin’ goes wrong with this, if she has a bad reaction to what ye give her, I’ll be the one who has to look after her, and it’s best if I know what she’s taken and why.” Hook just glared at Liam a moment before turning away and exiting the doc’s cabin. Liam sighed. It’s obvious that the Captain was angry with him and for quite a good reason he supposed. However, Caitlin’s health was at stake and he hoped that the Captain’s prejudice towards him was not going to get in the way of her well-being.
The cabin doors to the captain’s quarters burst open with a wave of shouting and noise. Caitlin jumped up from her seat on the fainting couch to see what was going on. All at once, Danny jumped into her arms burying his face in her shoulder and holding on
for dear life. Several crewmembers had spotted the boy and had tried to capture him and stop him before he could get past them, yet he was too fast and bolted into the Captain’s cabin before they could get close. Cat looked up at the men who stopped at the door a moment. “There he is! Get ‘em!” Two men started to lunge towards the child but Caitlin pulled Danny behind her putting herself in between him and the pirates.
“Stop this! Stop this at once!” She said smacking one of the men’s hands that held a dagger towards her.
“WHAT THE DEVIL IS GOING ON HERE?!” Hook’s voice roared from the cabin door. All eyes turned towards James as he entered into the room. As he walked in further he cast his stare towards each of the men. “I see no acceptable or valid purpose that you putrid, disgusting, imbecilic swine could have to be inside my chambers with my bride!!!” However, his scolding was cut short as he took a few steps closer to Caitlin. Two small green eyes starred out from behind her. Two eyes he had come to recognize as his only true competition in Caitlin’s heart. It was that boy, the one whom she called “Danny”. The boy who had invaded there ship once before to seek out Caitlin, had now done it a second time.
One of the pirates quickly stepped forward removing his cap trying to give some sort of explanation before they were all condemned to a sentence of death. “We was only doin’ what ye said Capt’n. Just like the last time that little scallywag come aboard, and we held him down in the brig for days and days . . . .” Hook couldn’t believe the words that had just been spoken aloud and in front of Caitlin. He turned shooting death glares toward the foolish, and soon to be dead man for his utter lack of common sense.
Caitlin frowned hearing what the pirate had said. Was it true? Could James possibly have done such a thing? As she gazed at both the Captain and the man who had revealed the shocking secret, “What?” She said softly in disbelief. The shock and horror that crossed her face told James a new problem had just arisen that would have to be dealt with, as if they hadn’t had enough obstacles in their way already. The reaction the two men had, only told her that it was true.
Hook never once took his eyes off of Caitlin as he spoke, “Leave us. Take the boy to the infirmary immediately.” He said intending to clear the room out so that he and Caitlin could speak in private. The pirates started to exit, and one man quickly walked to Cat starting to reach for the small child. However, she took Danny’s hand and pulled him behind her once again, putting herself between him and the rest of the world. It was clear that she wasn’t going to let anyone go near him. The pirate looked back at Hook not sure what to do. James just gave a slight wave that he was to leave without the boy.
Once the door had closed Hook and Cat just stood there starring at each other. “I suppose, that man’s words seemed a little . . . too… generalized without proper clarification . . .” Cat shook her head raising her hand to cut off his words.
“James . . . please . . . If you are at fault, you are about to try and clear your name, perhaps with absolutely no truth to it what so ever. There is one person I will ask for an explanation for he has no reason to lie to me.” James clinched his jaw tight as he fell silent. Cat turned and kneeled down in front of Danny looking into his eyes. “Danny . . . were you kept in the brig against your will the last time you were found aboard the ship? Before you came to see me?” The redheaded boy looked into her eyes for several moments, before leaning up and whispering in her ear.
Hook hated this; he wanted to know what was being said. That little rat was probably divulging all the information he held for what had gone on since James had first come in contact with him. Caitlin would never forgive him for all of the things he had done with that child, even though he was a lost boy and he was justified in his actions. Hook tried to step closer straining to hear what was being said yet he could only here a slight murmur and no real words.
At last Caitlin sighed and pulled the small boy against her in a hug. What was this? Sympathy? James was certain that he was done for now. Cat stood up still holding Danny’s hand before walking over to James looking into his eyes for a moment. Hook just waited, not knowing what was going to happen but knowing it couldn’t be good. All at once Caitlin released the redheaded boy’s hand and wrapped her arms around James hugging him tight. This was unexpected? “I’m sorry I doubted you James. I shouldn’t have, I knew you wouldn’t lie to me.” She said with remorse in her voice for acting the way she had.
Hook just stood there with his arms about her holding her against him wondering what on earth had just taken place. James looked down at the boy that was standing behind Caitlin still, and arched a brow seeing a grin on the young child’s face. Cat pulled back and looked up at James, “I hope you can forgive me.”
Forgive her for what!?! She was more of a pawn then she could possibly realize. “Of course my dear . . . . after all you have been through in our marriage, it was only natural for you to be suspicious.” Caitlin nodded still feeling guilty before looking towards the child and smiling.
“Now we won’t have to go ashore tomorrow to find him James, he has found us.” Leaning down next to the boy, “Would you like a story today?” She whispered to him. The child’s face lit up as he nodded quickly. Caitlin laughed happily as Danny nearly pulled her into the study anxious to see what story she would read him today.
James just stood there in shock watching this entire scene. He wasn’t sure what had happened, but he was almost certain that child had some sort of angle he was playing at. He wanted something, why else would he lie about his captivity like that? It would have been the quickest and easiest way to eliminate James relationship with Caitlin, yet he did not take the opportunity.
Hook shook his head and walked back to the part of the cabin where they slept at night, or at least tried to. He put the container with the mixture on his side of the bed and sat down starring at it.
Later that night, James sat across from Caitlin at the table watching her as she instructed her young companion on proper meal etiquette and the functions of a fork, spoon, and knife. The boy seemed extremely open to her lessons, and did his best to do everything she explained to him. Hook just sat back in silence sipping his wine.
“Alright, that’s very good. Now, it’s best if you take smaller bites. Big bites like that last one, tends to make you look like a cow chewing your cud.” Danny nodded, and began to cut another piece of the meat, holding it up to her making sure it was the correct size. Caitlin smiled, “Yes that’s perfect.” The small child grinned from ear to ear and continued on with his meal. Cat seemed to be glowing with joy that she was teaching this eager young boy something he might very well carry with him the rest of his life. She smiled up at James hoping he was enjoying this time as much as she was. Hook just took another drink of his wine and said nothing. Caitlin was too engrossed in her current task to notice this.
After supper, she taught the child how to wash up as she had done before they had begun to dine. This was a lesson that James didn’t mind so much. The child’s hygiene was absolutely horrifying in every sense of the word. Once this was finished, James had left the cabin a few minutes to make arrangements for the boy to return to land. For the past few hours, Hook had been holding back the urge to throttle that young scamp. The few times James had tried to address Caitlin, Danny quickly got in between them and stole her attentions away again. It was rather annoying to say the least.
However, when he returned back to his quarters, he found Caitlin exiting the small room closing the door motioning for him to be quite with a smile on her face. James walked closer to her, “What on earth are you thinking Caitlin? That boy cannot stay here the night, he must be returned to land immediately!” Cat turned towards him and wrapped her arms around him hugging him tight, stopping Hook’s words cold.
“Oh James, please? Just for one night? It’s so cold outside, and he was so exhausted.” looking up at him with a pleading in her eyes, “He is sound asleep, he won’t wake until morning. He’s had such a full day.” Hook sighed and raised his brow slightly looking at her.
“Caitlin why must you put me in such awkward positions such as this? He cannot stay here.” The smile Caitlin wore started to fade as she nodded looking down. “Caitlin . . . .” James began hating it when she took on that whipped puppy look. It was his own doing for now she feared his temper enough, she tried her absolute best not to provoke him. James looked away thinking for a moment grinding his teeth. “Oh . . . fine, but just for tonight. He leaves at the break of day. Understand?” Cat’s face lit up as she leaned up kissing James cheek hugging him again. Hook felt as if he had been trapped between two hard surfaces and was slowly being hammered into place.
“On one condition.” He said suddenly wanting to keep his hold on this situation. Caitlin looked up at him curiously waiting to hear what he required of her. “We sleep together tonight.” Cat’s brow furrowed in confusion at this.
“But . . . we always sleep together James. Side by side.” Hook pulled her close to him looking down into her eyes a moment.
“That was not how I meant it my dear. It is rather easy to assume we will have the same difficulty falling into blissful slumber tonight as we had the last. Why not spend it wisely, exploring the possibilities that a husband and wife should.” A deep red blush came to Caitlin’s cheeks at the sudden realization of what he had been implying. Hook leaned down and kissed her shoulder holding her body against him.
“James . . . we can’t . . . he’s right. . . he’s just in the next room. He could hear us, or . . .he might have a nightmare. We just can’t.” James stopped cold as he held her for a moment. Pulling back he looked into her eyes. Dear God she was absolutely serious.
The door of Liam’s quarters slammed open and James burst into the room. “How long until her body begins to deform!” He shouted kicking over a table as he walked towards the sleeping doctor. Liam quickly jumped to his feet half asleep and not sure what was going on. “Did you not hear me?”
“Capt’n . . . what are ye talkin’ about? Deform? Who?” James growled and shoved several objects off of a nearby shelf. It was obvious he was beyond angry about something.
“What do you mean who?! The very one that you chose to give up your freedom for, and nearly your life had she been found dead!!!” He shouted kicking a chair out of his way as he continued to approach the startled surgeon. “I despise having to repeat myself, you and the rest of the miscreants aboard this ship have no sense of self preservation for it continues to repeat itself!” James stood in front of Liam and shouted, “HOW LONG UNTIL HER BODY BEGINS TO SWELL AND AGE!!!!”
“Capt’n . . . . Ye know she can’t age as long as we be here in Neverland, any more then you or I or even Pan. She’ll start to show in about six week’s, that’s assumin’ that the rules of the mortal world apply here for this sort of event.” Hook gave a shout of annoyance as he picked up an object and flung it at the far wall, frustrated beyond all reason. Liam knew it wasn’t wise but dared to take a step forward. At one time, the Captain had allowed his surgeon to give him council; perhaps he would accept it again.
“Capt’n . . . . most likely . . . she’ll go right back to lookin’ just as she does now. Except her hips will be . . . well . . just a bit wider.”
Hook turned and glared at Liam, “And what of the devil spawn she comes to bare!? It will remain until only heaven itself knows when I shall be rid of it.” He said crossing his arms and turning away from the doctor. Liam blinked a moment at that sudden outburst.
“It just be a child Capt’n, yours and . . . yer misses.” The doctor’s hands clinched and released quickly trying to keep his opinion on this matter and emotions in check. Now not only was she condemned to be Hook’s bride, but she carried his child as well.
“To think, the crew places their health and trust so eagerly in one whose one true talent is to state the obvious.” Hook snapped.
“Why not just tell her Capt’n . . . it would be the easiest way . . . .maybe she can change yer mind about how ya feel on the situation.” HA, change his mind? She had already managed to give him a giant shove in the negative direction when she made it clear that relations where going to be forbidden when children were about. Without another word Hook turned and stormed out of the infirmary as the door was shut and locked behind him. Liam couldn’t help but get the feeling that Caitlin was somehow in danger now. James didn’t seem the least bit interested in becoming a father in any capacity.
Above the ship, in the darkness of the clouds and the absence of moonlight since a new moon and a new month had begun, several small creatures of light flew over the unsuspecting Jolly Roger, throwing dark colored dust down over the entire mass of the ship leaving no corner and no person untouched by their magic. Another night, of dreams was to begin.
