James didn’t even bother to lay down to sleep, he was beyond frustrated and he was a little upset with Caitlin. Honestly, you would think that women would suffer from the same urges as men wouldn’t you? Was it something about women who are wed? Do they just lose interest in their husband’s affections once they know they belong to them forever? Shaking his head he began to write in one of his ledgers grumbling to himself. Leaning back in his chair, James began to twist his hook from its base but found it to be stuck solid. Throwing down his quill he leaned back grasping it hard in his fist trying to twist it free. However it was frozen in place and wouldn’t budge even a single inch. “Blast” he cursed. It must haven gotten wet whilst he was storming about the ship destroying anything that came into his path. Things had a tendency to rust quickly aboard this ship.
Reaching over to his desk he opened a drawer and pulled out a can of oil that was used to keep the mechanisms working properly, and began to rest the hook free. It was rather dark in the cabin, Caitlin had found some sort of rest and even though he was upset with her for turning him out, he wanted her to get some sleep. “Damnit!” He cursed as his candle blew out at a point in his efforts when he could not let go or reach out to relight it. His eyes squinted and narrowed as he grit his teeth together, growing a bit irritated but he stopped. A flash of several lights outside of his window caught his attention. Tossing down the tool he had been using, he stood walking towards his blue glass window. Small flickers of light seemed to dart back and forth outside. Reaching up he moved the latch and pushed the frame open.
His eyes went wide as he found hundreds of fairies in the clouds, buzzing around the ship throwing bits of dust at it. All at once, at the first bell on deck of the Jolly Roger, every bit of light disappeared into whatever haven they had to retire in. “Everyone aboard the ship is asleep . . . .” He said starring out towards the sky and the waters below. “Those pixie devils . . . . they are the ones causing the nightmares . . . .they are casting spells upon us!!!” Sure enough, after a few moments screams of horror filled the decks below of men facing their worst nightmares in their sleep. He had suspected it was Aurora, but he was proved wrong just moments ago. Closing the window he quickly walked over to his bed where Caitlin lay sleeping watching her closely to see how long it was before she started to experience a reoccurrence of the night before.
This was indeed disturbing, those small creatures to set their sights on the ship was incredibly ill news. Those small creatures, except for Pan’s small companion, had always been a neutral presence in this strange game that was played between Hook and Peter Pan. For them to start taking an interest now was rather irregular and an unwelcome danger.
Aurora couldn’t sleep, she tossed and turned in her little hideaway place in the black castle. Even though she wasn’t under the nightmarish curse the pirates were, her heart ached and she longed to return to her Captain’s side. She was no longer welcome anywhere near the ship but she had to look in upon him to see if he was well, and if he was at least happy. Perhaps that human female drowned, but she had a feeling that was far too much to hope for.
Caitlin awoke suddenly as James shook her shoulder. “Caitlin wake up this instant.” Cat sat up quickly shaking her head wondering what all the excitement was about.
“James? What is it? What’s wrong?” James pulled her up from the bed and quickly took her to her closet shoving her inside.
“Get dressed quickly, there is no time to waste.” Before she could say another word, he closed the door leaving her in the darkness. She thought it best to do as he said and perhaps she would soon find out what on earth was going on. Once she was dressed she hurried out of her closet seeing James at his desk laying out some weapons. Hook looked up at her and picked up a sword and a dagger walking towards her, and placing each weapon on her person making her ready for some sort of battle. “We are leaving the ship immediately and going to shore. We are sitting ducks here, and I have a feeling that dawn will bring an attack of more then just wayward little children.”
Caitlin shook her head as she looked up at James, “What are you talking about? Who is attacking us?” James turned walking back to his desk, replacing his hook with a brand new one that had been forged to replace the old. It was apparent that he had no intention of discussing the matter with her now and she looked back towards the smaller bedroom door.
“Do not bother Caitlin, he is not there. He has deserted the ship, hours ago. Perhaps because he knows that games are a foot and did not wish to be caught in the crossfire.” Cat stopped and turned, looking at James a moment before quickly walking to the bedroom door and opening it. Just as Hook said, Danny was gone along with his things. Her heart sank slightly as she had been so incredibly overjoyed when she had spent time with him just the day before.
“Come along Caitlin, there is not much time.” Hook said as he picked up her cloak and quickly wrapped it about her shoulders. Before she could clasp it at the neck, he grabbed her hand and headed for the door. James intended to get her off of the ship and at least into their keep on the island until a more suitable place could be arranged. She had been put in far too many dangers as it was, and he had almost lost her on more then one occasion. He did not intend that this be the time she was taken away from him for good.
Thrusting the doors of his cabin open, they exited together and started down the stairs. Hook suddenly came to a stop holding Caitlin behind him. Cat looked up at him seeing the look in his eyes. “James? James what is it?” Hook’s eyes shifted left to right as he tried to hear anything. The deck was completely devoid of life, there was not a single pirate to be seen anywhere and no noise except the sound of lapping waves against the haul of the ship.
“Get back into the cabin, lock the doors. NOW!” He shouted pushing her back up the stairs before drawing his sword. Cat was reluctant to leave him, something was seriously wrong now and she knew it. Looking around she tried to see what danger was awaiting them, “CAITLIN! Do as I say! Get back inside immediately!” Hook shouted at her as this was no time to delay in obeying him.
Cat turned and started to make her way back towards the cabin, but a single lost boy dropped down in front of her holding a sword. A loud shout came from the sides of the ship as lost boys seemed to spring from everywhere. Caitlin drew the sword James had given her from her side and smacked the lost boy’s weapon from his hand, catching it by the handle with her other.
Hook placed his fingers to his mouth and gave a loud whistle, and pirates began to flood on deck with weapons drawn and the sound of clashing steel soon filled the air. Another boy dropped down behind Caitlin and she turned quickly catching the blade that he was trying to hack at her with, between the two she held and soon removed that weapon from his hands as she had done with the first boy who challenged her. Cat ran back to the stairs and quickly descended them heading straight for James.
Another shout came as more boys flooded the decks; they were easily outnumbered by the children. Caitlin raised her sword and knocked back a boy who was about to stab Hook in the back while he was preoccupied with another boy. James turned his eyes back towards her for a moment seeing her with a sword in each hand as she put her back against his ready for whatever came next. “I thought I told you to get back in the cabin Caitlin!” He said as two boys came at him.
“What’s the point of teaching me how to defend myself if I don’t have a chance to use it?” Hook half laughed at her comment finding humor in it for some reason. Together they started to advance through the deck trying to get to the helm. Hook’s eyes searched the deck for Peter Pan knowing that he must be close by preparing to strike down upon him.
“Caitlin, I want you to get into one of the boats!” He shouted back at her over the loud clashing of steel against one another, fighting off every sword that came at him. “I want you off of this ship and away from here!” He shouted again. Caitlin seemed to ignore his order and only fought beside him even harder. Pushing three boys away and into their brothers, James spun around and caught Caitlin’s arm pulling her close. “Did you not hear my words?! Do as I say!”
“James I don’t intend to return to that island and leave you here!” James saw that same stubborn streak that always seemed to emerge at the most inopportune times and quickly pushed her in front of him intending to give her a personal escort to the boats. Caitlin quickly hoisted her skirts and started up the stairs, dropping one of the swords in the process. However, she turned finding James was not behind her but caught on the stairs by four lost boys all trying to strike at him at once. Cat looked around a moment before climbing up onto the railing and diving towards the group of boys who broke her fall. James reached out catching her in his arms as the boys fell away in every direction. Cat was a little dizzy and disorientated from her flight and shook her head looking up at him. Hook gave her a look that said he was not happy with her choice of attack; especially since he had explained to her weeks ago during their lessons, that was not a wise course of action of one who did not wish to be skewered on a blade.
There was no time now for a scolding and he turned her about pushing her up the stairs quickly following after her. Below the battle raged on, boys by the dozens fighting pirates who didn’t seem to be very well adept in sword play but where defending themselves well enough. The sleep deprivation they had suffered was making their wits dull and their movements slow, which may have been the plan all along. Hook’s man concern was getting Caitlin out of harms way before something else could happen to her. Yet his steps slowed and came to a stop when a figure passed over head, casting its familiar shadow on the deck. An uneasy feeling quickly filled James at this, as if something was not as it normally was. Something was very different this time. As he cast his eyes upward, he saw the missing boy that he had been searching for as he and Caitlin passed through the mob on deck. Cat walked back to him before gazing in the direction James had turned his eyes.
Yet this time, the boy was not alone. Above in the rigging, along with Pan and his small companion, were thousands of fairies accompanying him, flying above. “James.” Caitlin whispered feeling a fear deep inside, remembering what the one small fairy that had haunted her dreams was capable of. Now there were so many. Hook continued to look up at them for a moment. This was against the rules of the game he and Pan were engaged in. The fairies were neutral! This was bad form indeed.
Quickly James turned and walked to the railing looking down below decks. “There is no such thing as fairies!” He called out to his men on the deck. They all looked up at him before looking at each other saying nothing. James placed his hand on the railing looking down at them shouting even louder, “THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FARIES!” Instantly a fairy dropped down on the deck causing all eyes to turn towards the dead creature. Suddenly two pirates repeated the phrase their commander had shouted, “There is no such thing as fairies.” They said as a few more dropped out of the sky onto the deck. Quickly the rest of the pirates voices joined in, “THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FAIRES! There is NO SUCH THING AS FAIRES!” Suddenly more dropped out of the sky by the dozens. Hook looked back towards the sky and saw that the small creatures were fleeing quickly and smiled, chuckling to himself.
“JAMES LOOK OUT!!” Caitlin’s voice cut through the chanting. Hook turned just in time to see Pan flying at him brandishing his sword as he gave a yell. James quickly moved out of the way, but Pan’s sword cut through Hooks shoulder. It was such a painful blow Hook dropped his sword and clasped the wound with his only good hand. Peter stopped and turned back towards Hook, preparing to fly at him again and attack him with an even deadlier blow. Caitlin glanced about quickly trying to find something to stop this attack with, as something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye.
Pan raised his sword giving another holler intending to strike another blow, however his advance was cut short when a plank of wood came swinging around and landed directly in the boy’s gut. It instantly knocked Peter’s wind from his lungs and he crossed his arms over his belly coughing and gasping for air. Caitlin stood there holding the board like some sort of bat, intending to strike again should he try another attack. Peter coughed again looking up at her before joining the fairies in retreat. The boys soon jumped over the sides of the ship and disappeared as well. The pirates on the deck quickly took their pistols and rifles and fired at every last boy they could see over the railing.
Caitlin watched still holding the plank in her hands, as James suddenly grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back from the railing standing beside her and watching this as well. “There are games afoot Caitlin . . . .This is not how the challenge is played.” Hook said morbidly as his eyes turned up towards the sky, seeing it now devoid of any signs of small lights or a mischievous boy. After another moment, James turned his eyes back towards Caitlin, “Return to the cabin immediately. I will be along shortly.” He demanded not leaving room for her to argue as he pushed her towards the stairs. Cat nodded a bit and did as he bade her.
“SMEE!” James roared for his first mate. Smee jumped at the sound and dropped his sword. Turning, he quickly ran towards the second deck where James was standing looking out towards the island.
“Ye called Capt’n?” The small old man quickly inquired, running his hands over whatever vital parts of his body he was afraid had been damaged, but found each and everyone in its proper place and completely unharmed.
“Go below and release the Doctor from his confines. Tell him to tend to the crew and whatever wounds may have been sustained.” James turned his eyes towards Smee a moment. “But keep a sharp eye on the scoundrel. He has already proved himself to be quite untrustworthy.”
“Aye Capt’n.” Smee said giving a slight salute as he made one more check of his arms, legs, chest and anything else that might have been in line of dreadful fire. Turning he headed down the stairs, carelessly stepping over a fallen lost boys body. He stopped and moved back seeing a necklace around the boy’s neck that he was sure held some value and pulled it off the body jamming it in his pocket before heading below to release the doctor.
Caitlin paced back and forth slightly in the cabin, still feeling the adrenalin rush of the events that had just taken place. She felt very vulnerable and unsafe at the moment. That attack simply came out of nowhere and happened so suddenly. They could have very well taken them all had they been asleep, perhaps killed every last one aboard the Jolly Roger. What of Danny? What had become of him and why did he disappear so suddenly without a sound or a word? She only hoped that he was all right and no ill had befallen him for his being aboard the ship.
Cat turned quickly at the sound of an opening door. She saw James step inside and close the door. “What are we to do James? Is it over, or will they return?” She asked looking at him, still feeling her heart racing deep inside. Hook latched the door closed and turned throwing his sword down on the ground as he walked to his desk and flopped down in his chair feeling quite exhausted. Caitlin knew there was something wrong at his silence and the way he moved about. At once she pushed her questions aside and walked to him placing her hand on his head frowning. His skin was as cold as ice.
James looked up at her looking very tired indeed just watching and focusing on her lovely face. Caitlin moved before him and began to unhook his sword sheath from around his shoulder and put it aside. Quickly and carefully she removed his jacket and vest, mindful to watch his reaction to see wither or not she was causing him pain. James grit his teeth tight together unwilling to make a sound, even though each time she moved his arm he wanted nothing more then to cry out.
Finally she made her way down to his undershirt finding it had been torn in such a way there was no mending it. Reaching for the dagger that she wore at her side, she pulled it from its sheath and cut it away from his body. The wound in his shoulder was horrendous and Cat’s eyes went wide at the sight. Reaching up she touched two broken pieces of leather, showing Pan’s strike had gone through James shoulder and the harness which held his hook. James eyes just remained on her watching her face, feeling a bit weak.
Caitlin quickly tore what was left of the ruined garment into long strips, leaving Hook for a moment to retrieve the alcohol that was kept for medicinal purposes such as this. Returning to his side she quickly began her work, wanting to get the wound cleaned and packed with a bandage before she took off the leather straps that bound his body. Hook smiled as he watched her work. Caitlin noticed his gaze as it remained upon her but said nothing and continued in her task.
“The first day you awoke here with me in my cabin, I would never have thought you would come to tending my wounds in such a caring way.” He said softly still hoping for the words he longed to hear more then any other. Caitlin felt very uncomfortable all of a sudden but kept her eyes on his shoulder, picking up the bottle she poured some of the cleaning alcohol into the wound. James closed his eyes and hissed through his teeth at the sharp pain that went through his body as Caitlin clamped the cloths down tight on his shoulder to keep the air away from the open wound and make the pain less then it was.
James took a few deep breaths regaining his composure even though a slight sheen of perspiration crossed his brow. “How ungrateful would I be if I allowed you to bleed to death after all you have done for me.” James opened his eyes looking up at her, his breaths slowing in his chest as his dreams were once again crushed with her words. It was not out of love that she tended him; it was out of duty. He felt his heart sink at this but what more could he expect. She was here and looking after him, as any wife should for her husband. Still a glint of hope rested there deep inside. Reaching up and grasped her forearm stopping her movements as he looked towards her eyes.
“You could easily let me die Caitlin . . . make the cut deeper so that the blood flowing from my body could not be stopped.” He said plainly hoping that his words would get the truth from her, or some sort of feeling from her own lips. Honestly, why would she look after him when a wound such as this could easily be made fatal? “You would be single again, a free woman. Untethered by a husband who has humiliated you, threatened you… hurt you on several occasions.” Caitlin kept her eyes towards his shoulder listening to his words. Still he held onto her arm, his regret for causing such inflictions on her after the hardships that this land forced her to bear now coming out in his words. Almost as if he was inviting her to cause his death if she so wished it.
Pulling her arm away from his hand she quickly went back to binding his arm, saying nothing in response to his words. James watched her, letting his hand fall to his lap, her silence cutting through him like a sharp knife, more painful then Pan’s sword. Once Cat was satisfied that his wound was properly tended to, she reached up unhooking his harness and slid it from his body. Hook felt weak and even more tired then before once the leather straps were removed. Caitlin quickly dropped the contraption to the floor and took a few more cloths tying them securely in place. Pulling him to his feet, she pulled an arm around her neck and placed her arm across his back aiding him to their bed and helping him to lie down so he could rest.
His eyes opened once more and remained on Caitlin as she pulled off his boots putting them aside. Why did she do these things for him, why did she look after him so readily? To repay him for his caring for her each time she was sick or wounded he supposed. Only his acts he did out of pure admiration and love for her. Yet it seemed to only reap acts of kindness from her as if they were offered to pay a difficult debt.
Caitlin sat next to him on the bed and looked down at him making sure the bandages were still tight and secure. “I’ll fetch the doctor to make sure I mended the wounds correctly.” She said softly looking down at him. James looked up at her into her eyes for several moments in a way that made her gaze turn downcast as she began to ramble. “I know I should have called out to you sooner James, he just flew down so quickly out of the sky, there was hardly any time to do anything. Perhaps I could have stopped him or . . . or . . .”
Hook reached for her hand and wrapped his fingers around her wrist pulling her hand up to rest against his chest as he continued to gaze at her. “Lay with me Caitlin. Rest with me now.” He said softly just wanting her to stay close and not leave. Perhaps in his dreams he could hold her, and touch her, and have her return each affection for the same reasons as he. Caitlin looked up at him hesitating for a moment, but finally gave in as she nodded and moved to lie down beside him. Hook took a deep breath and closed his eyes, holding her hand to his chest, feeling the softness and the warmth there that he loved so very much.
