Early the next morning, all were asleep aboard the Jolly Roger. Even the watch, who was supposed to be wide-awake, ready to sound an alarm should anything happen, was sleeping. Lost boys, with their faces painted in bright colors like the Indians on the island, began to crawl up the sides of the ship and flood the deck silently. They gave silent signals to each other and half of the force went below decks and quickly and quietly tied up each pirate tight in their hammocks so they could not get free.
Peter flew up to the second deck and landed in front of the double doors that led to the Captain’s cabin. Reaching up to open them he found they were locked and whistled for Tinkerbell to come to him. In a flash of light she fluttered to Peter, wearing war paint of her own like the rest of the Lost Boys. Taking out an arrow made of the glitter and sparkles that made up fairy dust, she fired it at the door where the lock would be and it instantly came free. Several dozen fairies fluttered inside with Peter and Tinkerbell.
They quickly looked around and searched the cabin to find James Hook lying soundly asleep in his bed, alone. It seemed rather odd that no one had come across Caitlin aboard the ship yet. Perhaps she saw them coming and fled. “Take him anyway, she’ll come back to claim him if she is truly loyal to the pirate Captain.” The fairies nodded and started to fly in a circle above Hook, dusting his body completely with a strange colored fairy dust. His body seemed to become bound tightly as they lifted him from the bed.
A little while later, the door of Caitlin’s closet opened, as she had awoken early to wash her hair and get dressed for the day. She stepped into the cabin and closed the door behind her. Her movements stopped as she found it strangely quiet in the room and wasn’t sure exactly what it was. Turning around she hurried over to their bed where she had left James sleeping and pulled the curtain back. “James!?!” That was why it was so quiet. She couldn’t hear James breathe while he slept, she was alone in the cabin.
“JAMES?” She called out starting to panic as she quickly searched about the cabin, but there was no one there besides herself. Above, in the rafters, Aurora hid with wide eyes having seen James taken prisoner by her fairy kin. It was obvious what was going on, they must have known she was aboard the ship and all were taken prisoner because of her. Her trial was at hand and she was frightened knowing what the sentence would be.
Caitlin felt ill, something was terribly wrong. If James had woken, he would have called out to her when he found he was lying alone as he had always done. Looking around the cabin again she found all of James weapons had been left. Of course he was wearing his Hook; she had found he had woken during the night and adorned it. She wasn’t sure why except he might have felt strange having not worn it for so long. Reaching for a dagger, she quickly tied the belt around her middle just in case, and headed for the doors of their cabin. Throwing the doors open, she quickly rushed out onto the deck looking about.
There was not a soul on deck, not a watch, not a single pirate, nothing. “JAMES!!!” Caitlin cried as she hurried down the steps looking about and calling out for him again.
“He’s not here lady.” Caitlin stopped, hearing a familiar voice. That boy Peter Pan, who had been causing more hardship then she dared to imagine. Turning slowly, with tears in her eyes she looked at him. Standing there with a smug look on his face, knowing he had the upper hand and was very pleased with himself.
“What have you done with them you little monster.” She said through her teeth, her voice breaking as she was feeling as helpless as a baby kitten. “Where is the crew, where is Captain Hook.” She said again, hating the fact he held her at such a disadvantage.
Aurora flew out the doors of the cabin and hid once again to watch what was going on. Her eyes went wide as she saw the human female and the boy Peter Pan facing each other in the middle of the main deck.
Several of the fairy elders appeared behind Peter, looking over his shoulder at her with very displeased stares. “They say you are guilty of crimes against your kin, and have practiced black magic which is forbidden to be used by any fairy.” Caitlin shook her head, looking at the creatures before looking back at the boy. A tear escaped her eye and rolled down her cheek.
“I’m not a fairy, I haven’t used any black magic, I don’t even know what you’re talking about!! . . . What is the matter with you!? Do you have any idea what it is you have . . . .” Peter shook his head, growing weary of listening to her talk.
“QUIET lady! You can’t fool us anymore! You’ll pay for your crimes and your trial starts now!!!” Caitlin quieted for a few moments, starring at the boy shaking her head slowly.
“I see. You have become the Spanish inquisition and you want me to confess to crimes I didn’t commit.” A smile swept Peter’s face as he laughed a little bit. Obviously this was a new game he was going to enjoy immensely. Caitlin sighed softly, looking down a moment. They had the crew, they had James . . . everyone that she knew. Peter began to walk slowly around her drawing his sword from its sheath. Cat could feel it as he reached up with the blade and ran it through her hair a moment.
“It grew back.” He said smugly as he looked at her. How could children be so incredibly sadistic and cruel? Of course all little boys were, but not all were at this level of dangerousness. “Maybe I should cut it again so you will fear me.” At once Caitlin drew her dagger and spun about knocking his blade from his hands as she held the sharp tip to the soft part of his jaw.
“You spoiled little brat, this isn’t a game. This is my husbands life, and MY life… you stole his hand from him and now what else do you intend to take from him?” She pressed the sharp tip even further into his jaw causing Peter’s eyes to go wide with surprise. “I am tired of these games that you and your brothers play. You have taken me prisoner more then once, and intended to humiliate me and torture me before you stole my life.” She stepped closer to him, positioning herself to ram the blade through his throat. “I want my husband and his crew returned to this ship, or by God, I will kill you as you stand!” She shouted, her heart wincing at her own words, still seeing a child before her eyes even though he was guilty of such adult monstrosities.
Suddenly fairies began to attack her, biting her skin and stabbing her with their small little daggers as they threw fairy dust upon her. Caitlin could hardly breathe and dropped her dagger, stepping back clasping her throat as she gasped for air. Peter ran, grasping his sword as he leapt up into the air and kicked Cat in the chest, knocking her to the ground. Before she could make a move to stand or to find her weapon once more, the boy stood over her holding his sword to her throat much in the same manner she had done just moments before.
“This is my world lady, not yours. It’s my rules that we play by.” With that, some fairies quickly pulled a blindfold over Caitlin’s eyes and tied it tightly so she could see nothing.
Cold drops of water fell on James face, and he winced with each annoying drop. Reaching up and ran his hand over his face and sat up abruptly, ready to assault who ever it was that would dare. However, as he looked about he found he was no longer in his cabin, but alone in a cold cell that was complete with bars and black stones. Black and corroded bars blocked the only way in or out of the small area. Hook stood and walked to the door, grasping it as he tried to open it and free himself. However they were locked tight and he shook the bars even harder in anger. His eyes searched, looking for some sort of weakness, but found nothing. Leaning further against the bars he looked down below the ledge that rested outside of the cells. He was in the black castle, but how he had gotten here was quite unknown.
“Capt’n? Is that ye? Have ye woken yet?” It was Smee’s voice, there was no mistaking it, but Hook couldn’t see into the other cells for stone walls separated each one.
“What the devil is going on here!?!” He roared shaking the bars again. “SMEE! How is it that I fall into slumber in my chambers and awake here locked in a cage like some sort of beast?!”
“I don’t know Capt’n. The whole crew is here, and we can’t get out of our cells! There must be magic afoot.”
James sighed, shaking his head, “There usually is.” Looking up towards the roof he could see very little light shining in through the cracks and crevices. “Caitlin? Caitlin, are you alright?!” He called out to her wanting to hear her voice and know that she was safe. But no answer came. “Caitlin! Answer me!” He called out louder this time.
“She’s not here Captain! She’s not in this cell or any of the others! We don’t know where she is!” James closed his eyes and leaned his head against the bars, feeling an anger hotter then hell’s fire welling up deep inside of him.
“Why . . . . in the name of everything that is unholy . . . .DOES THIS WORLD KEEP TAKING HER FROM ME!?!” He roared so loud the very stones of the castle shook at the sound of it. James began to slam his hook at several points in the bars trying to find a weak spot. It was a very old castle that was nearly in complete ruin, and the salt filled sea air should have broken down the integrity of the bars, yet they were as strong as the first day they were built.
“It’s no use Capt’n! We’ve tried everythin’. We got no weapons; the ones that we sleep with were gone when we awoke.” James looked at his hook as their captors seemed to have failed in removing perhaps the most dangerous weapon he possessed.
“The fools.” He said underneath his breath. James had only just begun and he intended to try every way possible to free himself from this cage. Inside he knew it was Pan and those fireflies from the deepest circle of hell.
“Take her blindfold off!” Hook stopped in mid swing, preparing to slam his iron appendage into the bars, hearing a familiar voice. Leaning against the bars, he looked down into the castle as much as he could, trying to see anything. The next sound heard was those annoying lost boys shouting and cheering.
“Capt’n? Do ye hear that?” Smee asked quickly.
“Quiet you worthless maggot!” James hissed, trying to hear what was going on, somehow knowing they had Caitlin. Something was amiss, and not the normal childish adventure the adolescents indulged in. They were using fairies. This was something on a much grander scale.
Down below, the blindfold was yanked from Caitlin’s eyes as she stood on the rock in the middle of the fortress. The same one she had been tied to weeks ago when she had been captured. Her wrists has been clapped in irons, and the chains where attached to the rock to assure she wouldn’t try and escape. As her eyes adjusted to the light she looked up, finding hundreds of fairies hovering above and lining the walls and stones of the castle. On the shores of the castle that surrounded the rock, were dozens of lost boys starring at her and cheering loudly. Above was Peter, who he came down and landed on the hand of the large dragon statue whose presence filled the entire space.
“Are you ready to answer to the charges against you?” Caitlin closed her eyes a moment before looking up at the boy in silence. The smile quickly faded from Pan’s face as he could see this wasn’t going to be as easy as he first thought. She wasn’t going to cooperate at all if she could help it. Pan looked to one of the elder fairies that flew up next to him. Listening a moment, Peter looked at Caitlin again. “Change into your real form, and shed the one you have taken now. The fairies are demanding it.”
“This is the only form I have boy. I am a human, I am a woman, and I am married to Captain James Hook, whom you have stolen from our home!” She shouted at Pan. Peter looked to the fairy again before looking down at Caitlin.
“What exactly does it mean to be ‘married’?” he inquired. It seemed that the entire concept of matrimony was lost on these creatures and children. Caitlin closed her eyes and shook her head slightly, not wishing to cooperate but knowing somehow she had to if she was ever to see Hook again.
“It means I am bound to Captain James Hook, as he is bound to me. I am his wife, and he is my husband. We became one the day we were wed; we became part of the same family.” She said as simply and plainly as she could before looking up to Pan again. “For some reason, you and the others have tried to tear us apart since I was brought here many months ago. You have no right to do this to us!” She shouted feeling helpless and desperate.
Pan looked towards the older fairy again before looking back at their prisoner. “They say you must admit to your crimes of using black magic against us, and causing the lost boys to lose their senses and want to kill you.” Caitlin narrowed her eyes a moment, starring at him.
“Did you just hear your own words? Even if I knew how, why would I cast a spell on those boys that meant my death! I never did any such thing, and they intended to torture me in ways that are unimaginable before I died!” Peter looked at the elder fairy again at this and they went silent for a few moments. “I don’t KNOW this world! Ja. . . . Captain Hook has been teaching me about the strange ways for only the past two months! Before then, I didn’t even believe that magic was real! . . . How can you stand there and say . . .”
“QUIET LADY!” Peter shouted at her quieting her words. “If you can make yourself the size of a human lady, and disguise your true form, then you are clever enough to try and make us believe you aren’t capable of casting spells.” Caitlin sighed and looked away. Pan took a deep breath before asking the next question. “What is your fairy name? The elders want to know who you were before you fell out of favor.”
This was totally ridiculous. They were sure of what she was even if it was untrue, and whatever the fate was they decided for her, was going to happen. Why did they insist on sending her through this first? “I want to see Captain Hook.” Caitlin demanded suddenly. Peter frowned at her words. Her eyes shifted up towards the boy as she was trying to hold back the tears in her eyes. “Do you hear me? You’ll not get another word from me until I see JAMES!!!”
Peter looked around at the other fairies who were consulting with each other a moment. The lost boys began to mumble amongst themselves and she heard the word ‘pirate’ repeated several times, knowing it was her that the term referred to. A few dozen fairies disappeared into the upper regions of the castle.
“GET AWAY FROM ME YOU FOUL LITTLE CREATURES!!!!” Hook’s voice echoed through the entire cavernous castle. Cat looked up trying to see where he was, pulling on the chains wanting to get free. Her movements stopped when she saw James being carried down to another rock not far away from hers. They threw him down on the rock, and cast a spell that made strange bars surround him like some sort of cell to keep him from escaping. Caitlin looked over towards him as Hook jumped up and made a try for the bars, finding it useless before looking up at Pan. “HOW DARE YOU!!!! Have you no shame!” He roared.
Peter just watched in silence, saying nothing. James turned and saw Caitlin clapped in irons. “Caitlin! . . . Caitlin, are you alright?” He asked quickly hoping she hadn’t been abused like before.
“Yes . . . for the moment.” She said quickly. “Are you alright? Have they harmed you?”
“Now answer our questions lady!” Pan said, cutting their conversation short, and drawing his sword. “We don’t have all day! Just tell us what we want to know!” Cat shook her head and sighed, what on earth could she tell them that would satisfy them? Anything she said would only speed her to her death.
James eyes darkened as he looked up at Pan through the bars, “What on earth is going on here?! She has done nothing that deserves to be put on trail!!!” He shouted hitting the bars fiercely with his hook wanting to get at the delinquent’s throat. “Why do you insist on interfering with us constantly!!!”
It seemed as if the host of on lookers ignored Hook’s questions and words and continued to look at Caitlin. Cat closed her eyes, feeling tired after having suffered from the same ailment as the rest of the crew, having had very little sleep. On top of a pregnancy that was unknown to her completely. As she opened them, she looked up at the boy who seemed to hold their very lives in his hand. Suddenly a smile swept his face, it was as if he had been hoping she wouldn’t talk. Looking across at two fairies that stood by; they looked at each other a moment and quickly disappeared through the large steel gate that kept creatures from leaving or entering the ruins of the black castle.
Peter still held a grin on his face looking down at Caitlin. “What say you? Will you tell us what we want to know?” Caitlin’s jaw clinched tight as she turned her face away again, refusing to play this childish game. Hook looked to Cat a moment, knowing she couldn’t have been feeling well by the dark circles around her eyes. Suddenly he realized he was feeling far better then he had in quite sometime. Stepping back he reached up feeling his shoulder finding no wound remained. It was odd to say the least, and he began to wonder how such a thing could occur. However, his thoughts were cut short by the sound of steady ticking that filled the air. His eyes went wide as he turned around to see a massive crocodile lying on the rocks just outside of the gate. The lost boys that stood on the shores began to climb much higher into the castle looking down to watch what would happen next.
Caitlin heard the sound too and turned as much as she could to see what it was coming from. Closing her eyes a moment she tried to remember the story that had been repeated to her by several people since she had come here. She repeated aloud the words, “Cut off his hand and threw it to a crocodile that hunts him wanting mo . . .” Cat could feel her heart beat faster deep within her chest as she looked over to James, who was indeed terrified. It was the first time she had seen such fear in his eyes, and it made her sick to her stomach once she realized what threat lie in store. Quickly she began to pull and jerk against her chains but it was no use, she was held too tightly.
“Don’t worry lady, she’s not after you.” Peter said, trying not to laugh, finding some sort of sick humor in all of this. “She’s been after him for a long time.”
The two fairies that had been sent to summon the croc flew in through the gates and sprinkled some dust on the wheel that began to move. Slowly, the Iron Gate started to rise. Caitlin pulled harder against her restraints, “JAMES!!!” She cried desperately wanting to get to him, wanting to do something, anything, before they let that monster in. Looking up at Pan she screamed, “WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?!!! You have become the very thing you said you fight against! You call this justice?!!! It’s murder, pure and simple!!!” Hook stood and began to frantically tear at the bars and the rock, anything to free himself. A loud splash of water caused both Cat and James to turn around. The croc had slipped from the rock into the water, swimming towards the gate.
Out of habit, James began to call out to his first mate, “Smee!!” He yelled, kicking at the magic bars that held him on the rock. “SMEE!!!” He screamed as the gates continued to rise. Cat’s heart began to ache as she jerked against the restraints again, but it was hopeless. She was no super woman and she was far from strong enough to pull the chains free. Her eyes shifted up towards the leader who seemed to preside over these murderous proceedings.
“Close the gate.” She said loudly. “CLOSE THE GATE!!!!” She screamed, taking a step forward as far as the chains would let her. “If you have any pity and mercy in your murderous heart then close the gate!!” Peter crossed his arms over his chest and shook his head. Suddenly all attention was turned towards the gate as the massive croc threw itself against the bars, trying to get in. She turned and swam out further to give it another try. Tears began to fill Caitlin’s eyes as she looked towards James once more. “Ask your questions!” She shouted as a tear escaped her eye and rolled down her cheek.
“What was your name before you fell from favor with your kin!” Caitlin thought a moment before shouting out, “Merishka.” The elder fairy quickly told Peter the next question.
“How long have you been practicing your dark magic?” Another loud echo of the croc slamming against the bars sent James into another loud scream for his first mate, and it sent chills down Caitlin’s spine.
“Since I was brought aboard the Jolly Roger!” Cat said quickly, wanting them to get this over and done with before James was put into danger that couldn’t be stopped. “CLOSE THE GATE!!” She yelled looking back towards the creature, again pulling at her restraints.
“You admit that you were using black magic! You cast spells on the lost boys and have used forbidden incantations!” Peter shouted down to her as he began to fly into the air and hover above her.
“LEAVE HER BE!!!” James shouted his eyes still towards the croc as he tried to free himself “SMEE!!!” He called out again.
“Yes, YES. Yes to everything you say! I confess to what ever you want me to confess to!!! Just close the gate and free him!!! PLEASE!! Let him go!!” She cried. Peter looked up at the fairies who all nodded, agreeing that she gave them what they needed to pronounce her sentence. Caitlin screamed again seeing the gate parting from the water, “CLOSE THE GATE!!!!!”
