Hook’s Wendy
(Chapter Fifty-Six)
For some reason, it seemed as if they were deliberately taking there time about closing the gate. Perhaps it was some sort of scare tactic or example of the power they held over their lives. Either way, Caitlin was becoming as frantic as James as the moments passed. She began to throw her weight hard against the iron bracelets that chained her in place.
Above in the cells that held the pirate crew captive, the members shouted and shook the bars at the sounds that were coming below. They were just as trapped as the Captain and his wife.
Two small green eyes appeared as the same boy who had visited the Jolly Rodger so many times stood before Smee’s cell looking up at him. Smee stepped close looking at the boy wondering what his purpose was for being there. Danny had tears in his eyes, it was obvious he had seen what was going on below. “They intend to kill them, don’t they boy.” The boy’s eyes closed as his head hung low. “And there not be a thing to do while we’re locked away here.”
Danny looked up at the first mate hearing his words as a ray of hope sparked in his heart. Turning on his heel he quickly disappeared into the darkness. Smee sighed slightly knowing it wouldn’t be long before they heard the screams of the Captain and his Misses filling the castle.
Aurora hid way up in the rocks, careful and extremely cautious knowing that if she was caught, it would be her wings that were cut off and her head to follow. If she could avoid it, she would in every way. However, her small heart beat almost frantically seeing the peril her beloved Captain was in. She scooted down on the rock trying to think of what she could do to help before it was to late.
“CLOSE THE GATE YOU MURDERER!!! HAVE YOU NO HONOR?! KEEP YOUR WORD!!!” Caitlin cried out pulling so hard at the chains now that they cut deep into her wrist and droplets of blood began to flow down her arm and her fingertips.
“Lady pirate, I never said anything about letting the gate down. You confessed of your own free will. We didn’t make a deal of any sort!” The lost boys all laughed and cheered at Peter’s words.
“YOU IMPLIED IT!” You made me believe that if I told you what you wanted to know you would free him! If I confessed to your charges you would let him go! Now you are to murder him in cold blood!?!” Peter just grinned and shrugged his shoulders as he watched anxiously.
Tears rolled down Caitlin’s cheeks as her eyes quickly turned towards James, wishing with everything in her heart and soul she could reach out and free him. Send him to some safe place; some form of refuge away from the creature and these evil lost children.
Above in the cells, Danny returned with a ring of keys and ran to Smee’s door. Jamming the key in the rusted lock, he wrapped both hands around it and turned it with all of his strength until the latch of the lock popped. Smee quickly opened the door and patted Danny’s head taking the keys from him. “That’s a good lad.” Smee turned and quickly began to unlock the rest of the doors freeing the other crewmembers telling them to keep quiet.
The gate was open now, and the large creature swam hard and fast for the castle. Hook fell against the bars watching this, knowing that his time was at hand. He buried his face in the bend of his arm, not wishing to see his end when the teeth of the monster surrounded him, chewing and tearing his flesh from his bones. Caitlin saw the giant head of the crocodile as it swam above the water. “NOOO, Please NO!” She cried out.
All at once, a number of things happened far to quickly for anyone to see much less stop. The large reptile leapt into the air as the bars disappeared from around James leaving him completely open to attack. The creature’s massive jaws opened wide, ready to claim her supper she had sought for so long. Suddenly, the creature stopped in mid air, just hovering there not moving, completely frozen in place. An awed silience swept over the crowd, lost boys and fairies alike. Caitlin could feel her heart stop not sure if she was dreaming.
A few moments passed, each one feeling like an eternity in itself. Yet the stillness was brought to an abrupt stop when it seemed as if the creature was thrown out of the castle far out to see. With that, the massive gate of the castle instantly slammed down hard sealing off another attack of the monster, should she be able to return, however unlikely. All looked about at each other as Peter flew into the air looking down at Hook and Caitlin.
Cat was as stunned as her captors, not sure if what had just happened was real. Yet she suddenly felt eyes, and turned to see that all where starring in her direction. It was then she realized that the shackles that had bound her in place, where gone. Caitlin lifted her hands to look in amazement at her freed wrists turning them over. The iron bracelets had fallen completely away. “She is the evil fairy.” A voice said from the crowd. Cat looked up towards the faces and shook her head.
“I did not do this.” She said still in shock. Now with what had happened, all assumed that it was her and considered their suspicions confirmed. Caitlin couldn’t believe any of this, were their fortunes so ill that nothing could go in their favor? “I have no magic! No knowledge of incantations or spells! I have no special powers. You cannot believe that I did this!!” She cried out.
Caitlin looked towards James and stopped, frozen in place. When the gate had slammed down, a rock had fallen lose from the ruins above and struck Hook. He lay unconscious on the rock with a few small drops of blood trailing from the wounds. “James . . . “ Caitlin whispered. What if he was not just asleep . . .what if. . . . An overwhelming need to run to him welled up inside her and she took a step towards him.
“DON’T MOVE LADY!!!” Peter yelled flying up into the air once more with his sword in hand. “You have only proved yourself guilty now, and have to pay for your crimes! It’s time to pronounce your sentence!”
Above, an exhausted Aurora flew back into hiding and fell against a rock breathing hard. She felt drained of all her energy after the number of feats she had just preformed, one right after another. Closing her eyes she fell asleep, to weak to even move or try to fight to stay awake.
Liam ran to Smee as Danny led the other pirates who had been freed to where their weapons had been stored. “We have to get down there now!” He whispered quickly, not wanting to alert the boys or any of the fairies as to their release.
“Quiet ye fool. If all the people the Capt’n don’t wanna see right now, you’re at the top of the list!” Smee pushed him aside taking his weapons from one of the pirates and putting them in their proper places.
“I’m the ships doctor Mr. Smee!” Liam said trying to keep his voice down. “If either of them is injured it’ll be me that does the mending . . . and Caitlin is . . .” Liam stopped in med sentence and shook his head. Smee noticed this and turned back towards the doctor.
“She’s what?” Liam didn’t answer knowing he had said far to much already and the Captain would happily carve his name into Liam’s backside and fill the wounds with salt for divulging such information. Smee, stepped closer to him, “She’s what doc?” Liam looked at Smee for several moments, and decided that at least one other who was not under capture needed to know just how dire the situation was.
Down below, Caitlin waited her eyes moving back to James afraid he was fatally wounded. The fairies all talked amongst themselves before looking at Peter telling him their judgment. Pan flew up into the air above Caitlin and looked down at her, “The sentence for using dark magic is death. You have to die for your crimes and all you have done.”
“You cannot kill her Peter Pan.” A voice said coming from above. All eyes turned towards the entrance to see that several of the older Indians had come to attend the trial. While all were distracted, Caitlin jumped off the rock and quickly made her way over to James crawling up on his rock beside him. Pan turned looking and them and landed on the Dragon’s head.
“Why not?” He said with disappointment in his voice. It was as if his fun was spoiled by their words. “She is an evil fairy and that is what her kind has condemned her to.” There was almost a pout in his voice that the proceedings had been interrupted. But he waited to see what they had to say.
“Because she may be guilty, but the other who would die with her, is not.” Peter’s brow furrowed not quite understanding this. The Conversation was cut short as Smee’s voice rang through the castle.
“ATTACK!!” The first mate shouted giving the order to the pirates to rush the mob of children and fairy creatures. The entire castle was thrown into a sudden state of chaos, as the silence was shattered by chaos, shouting, yelling and the clashing of swords. Caitlin looked down at James and shook him a little bit.
“James please, you must wake up.” She whispered lifting his head from the rock moving her legs beneath him. “James, open your eyes. Please open your eyes.” She begged running her fingers through his hair out of his face. Reaching under her dress, she tore a strip of cloth from her petticoats and held it against his head trying to control the bleeding. Peter looked around at everything going on and began to fight the pirates along with his brothers.
“Doc!” Smee called out to Liam as he fought with the lost boys, “Ye better get down their quick! It’s not lookin’ to good!” Liam pushed one of the boys away from him disarming another as he turned around and looked down seeing Caitlin and James on the rocks below. Jumping over a group of rocks, Liam ran down the pathway as quickly as he could.
Above, Aurora slept soundly unaware of anything that was going on. Nearby the Indian’s just stood still watching the conflict below them. They never deemed to mettle in such affairs, except this one time knowing Caitlin’s condition. It wasn’t exactly a common occurrence in Neverland. The children played with the lost boys and the fairies of course, but the older ones of the tribe knew better from years of experience and just stayed out of it.
Down below, Caitlin looked at James, wiping his hair away from his face calling out his name yet again, “James . . . please wake up, please.” Suddenly, James eyes squeezed tight shut before relaxing again. Slowly his eyes fluttered open. Caitlin smiled, happy to see that he wasn’t dead and he was awake. James eyes looked up at her for several moments as he gave a weak smile.
“Finally, the one sight I wanted to see when I wake.” Caitlin half laughed and smiled as tears ran from her eyes and she continued to hold the cloth over the wound on his head. James smile faded as he looked into her eyes remembering what had happened just moments before. “If they knew all that I knew . . . . they would never accuse you of such atrocities. They are wrong, for you have done nothing wrong.”
Liam suddenly came splashing through the water heading for the rock, climbing up the otherside. With absolutely no concern for James whatsoever, he kneeled next to Caitlin, “Come on, we have to get out of here, now!” He said looking around to make sure they wouldn’t be victims of an unseen attack. Liam frowned when she didn’t respond, and grabbed her arm beginning to pull her away, “Come on Caitlin! We don’t have time for this.” Cat’s eyes darkened as she looked up at the Doctor. She jerked her arm away from him, not believing that he even suggested that she leave James.
“Then HELP me! He has never left me the many times I was captured or hurt, I will NOT abandon him!” Liam looked at her shaking his head in disbelief. James simply had to tell her about her condition, so she would stop putting herself in such danger for others and took care of herself for the sake of her child. Honestly, if James died she would be single again, and Liam would no longer have to fear for his life or hers. Yet she wasn’t going to give James up without a fight it seemed. James was not so unconscious nor was he deaf. He was shaken and slightly out of it from the blow he took to his head, but he heard quite clear that the doctor wanted him left for dead. It would be something to be dealt with later.
Liam shook his head again, as there was apparently no choice but to aid her in helping him escape. They moved on either side of the Captain and helped him to his feet, wrapping his arms around each of their necks as they hurriedly made their escape. Smee saw them leaving the castle and would continue to let the pirates fight a while longer before calling the retreat to give Katherine and Liam more time to get clear.
Once outside, Caitlin and Liam looked about, “What path do we take Liam? I don’t know this place.” She said starting to panic a little as she looked towards the doctor.
“Neither do I, there was never much need of me to come this way on the island.” Suddenly the same small red headed angel that always seemed to appear in an effort to help the one whom he had fallen in a certain sort of love with, and give her whatever aid that might help her. The boy motioned for them to follow him and Liam and Caitlin quickly followed after still carrying James between them.
Peter took a step back as he looked towards the rock, seeing that their prisoners had escaped. He flew up into the air further to see where they had gone to, but they were nowhere to be found. Turning he started to head for the entrance but was stopped by the Indian elders of the child who blocked his path and shook their heads indicating they wouldn’t allow him to leave and possibly kill the one that had been put on trial and found guilty.
“GENTS! Back to the Jolly Rodger!” Smee’s voice rang through the castle ruins, thinking that enough time had passed for the Captain and his wife to be well away from danger.
Peter flew back to the Indians and landed in front of them. “Why can’t we kill her? Her own kind say that she is to be put to death.” The oldest looked at the young rouge a few moments before stepping forward.
“Come with us Peter Pan. There is much to explain, for you are still a very young boy, and are uneducated in certain areas. Another means of punishment must be decided upon for her crimes. For you cannot kill one who is innocent when it resides in the body of the one who is guilty. Then you would become the criminal.” Peter didn’t understand any of what was just said, but followed after the Indians as they left the castle, knowing it was unwise to ignore them and simply continue with his new game.
Hours later, when all had returned to the Jolly Rodger, Caitlin sat beside James as the doctor finished tending the Captain’s wounds. When Liam began to push his equipment away, Cat quickly grew concerned. “Why isn’t he awake? Is he going to be alright?” Liam glanced at her knowing that there was nothing he could say or do to make her see in Hook what he and many others saw.
“All there is to do now is wait. If he wakes up, he wakes up. If not . . . only time will tell Caitlin. He needs rest.” She sighed looking back at James dismissing Liam’s presence, not having forgotten that he was willing to leave Hook behind. The doctor shook his head and left the Captain’s cabin, leaving them alone.
