Hooks Wendy
(Chapter Fifty-Seven)
The next morning, Caitlin emerged from the cabin needing some fresh air. She had stayed with James all during the night, watching over him and hadn’t even had a moments rest herself. Walking to the railing, she looked down to the deck seeing several of the pirates with bandages dressing their wounds they had sustained in the battle the day before. Cat shook her head as her eyes wondered over the sight.
In a war there was usually some reason to it, some sort of goal. This one didn’t seem to have a goal of any sort. Why on earth did they insist on attacking and fighting them every day? How long could this go on before either side or both were completely wiped out of existence?
“How’s he doin’ Misses?” Cat turned seeing Mr. Smee standing behind her as he stepped towards her, “Ye’ve watched over him all night. You’re lookin’ mighty tired.” Caitlin nodded a little bit.
“He’s still asleep, the doctor said that all we could do was wait.” Turning back towards the railing she looked over the calm waters of the sea. “I hate waiting. Especially when it’s waiting to see if he will live or not. He seemed okay yesterday when we were in the black castle, he opened his eyes and looked at me. Even spoke.” Cat’s eyes turned towards Smee, “Then he sort of fell asleep, and he hasn’t opened his eyes again since.”
“Try not to worry to much misses. He’s been in worse scrapes before and always managed to pull through.” He said giving her a reassuring smile. However, his eyes betrayed him a bit as he looked over her, as if expecting to see something different in her appearance. With what the doctor had revealed to him it wasn’t to surprising that he would be curious. Smee didn’t even realize he was doing it until he found his eyes meeting Caitlin’s. “Eh . . . heh. Sorry misses, I was just . . . uh . . .thinkin’ maybe ye could use some more dresses? It’s been a while since we’ve made any for ye.”
Cat smiled, “I think I have plenty to last me for quite a while, but thank you for the offer Mr. Smee.” Caitlin took in another deep breathe of the clean sea air spending just a few more minutes outside the Captain’s cabin before returning to watch over James.
Aurora had awakened to find the entire castle was completely and utterly silent. So much so that she could hear the water lapping against the rocks below. She flew up into the air once she decided that the way was clear to see what had happened. There was no one left anywhere that she could see. How long had see been asleep? The battle was over and she could only hope that her Captain had won and escaped. There was only one way to find out and she quickly flew out and zipped across the ocean towards the Jolly Rodger.
Liam sat on the main deck, watching the cool see air blow through Caitlin’s hair as she stood at the rail on the upper deck looking towards the island. He couldn’t help but question why his feelings for her had gotten so out of control in such a short time. She was not his wife, nor was she ever meant to be. At first he didn’t mind at all the way the Captain had handled her, or his treatment of her. Yet after a time, and when he had a chance to get to know her, he began to treasure each moment of her company and yearn for her touch. Yet, it wasn’t ordained or meant to be. Unrequited love seemed to be all he would ever have for her.
Aurora saw that the stain glass windows were left wide open, no doubt to let the cabin air out and let a fresh breeze travel through, keeping the room from getting stale or unpleasant. Carefully she landed on the windowsill and snuck inside, making sure the coast was clear and hoping to see her Captain standing, perhaps in his office or another part of the Cabin.
Outside, Caitlin sighed and turned on her heel, going back into the cabin. They were going to have to find a different way of doing things if any of the pirates on the ship or the children who ran wild on the island were going to survive another year. She knew for a fact that James had grown weary of what seemed to have become a duty and chore rather then a challenge or adventure. She was certain that there were others that shared his discontentment.
Once inside, Caitlin closed the doors feeling the cool sea breeze flow in through the windows. Aurora heard the sound and flew up into the air, looking around frantically for a place to hide. Seeing the curtains drawn on the Captain’s bed, she ducked inside them hoping to hide herself in the darkness. After a moment, she could feel warm breath hit upon her. Turning to see who was there beside her, she felt another breath hit her small fairy form. Taking a few steps closer she made her light glow bright, and there laying in bed, was James. He looked terrible and had a large white bandage around his head where something had struck him. She was horrified at his appearance and her small wings dropped down against her back. He was so pale, so weak and sickly looking. It would be a miracle if he made it another few hours. Aurora looked around and searched through her bags of dust she carried on her small belt wrapped around her tiny waist. She began to mix a few of the different colors of dust that she had collected and used since the time she and James returned from the real world.
Cat turned and walked towards the windows intending to close them now the room had been aired out, yet she stopped. It was such a beautiful day and the sea air was so fresh and clean. James had been asleep for quite awhile and perhaps it would do him some good. Walking over to their bed, she drew the cord that pulled the curtains open to let the cool breeze in where it could touch James. Aurora saw the light starting to flood the darkness and quickly flew up blowing the dust into James mouth, before pushing his jaw closed and placing a gentle kiss on his upper lip. As fast as she could, she flew into the rafters so that the alarm wouldn’t be sounded by that human female announcing that the dark fairy had returned to the ship.
The sea air blew through the cabin and over James, causing him to take a deep breath as well, taking in the dust that aurora had gentle breathed between his lips just moments before. Caitlin sat down next to James reaching for a cloth and soaked it in cool water before wringing it out and gently pressing it against his face to keep him as cool and comfortable as she could. This had been the longest time she had been awake and he had been asleep and her heart sank as she watched him. It seemed like he wasn’t getting better even a little bit, but worse. She kept the bandages on his head clean and changed every so often and cleaned his wound so that an infection wouldn’t creep in and make it harder for him to heal. Yet even with her attentiveness, his life seemed to be slipping from his body.
As she looked at him, she felt a deep sense of remorse inside that she had waited until he was at deaths door to find what she now knew. Reaching over, she put the cloth down in the bowl and leaned over James so that her face was close to his. Reaching up she ran her fingers through his hair, wishing that he would open his blue entrancing eyes and look at her once more. Yet somehow, deep in her heart, she feared he wouldn’t.
“I’ve been such a fool James. All this time we’ve been together, since our wedding day . . . all I’ve done is give you grief in one form or another. Of course there have been times when I’ve been afraid of you, even though I knew deep inside you would never hurt me intentionally.”
As she spoke and gently stroked his dark curled hair with her fingertips, James awoke on the inside. Although he was unable to move, or open his eyes he could hear what was going on around him; like he was locked in some sort of deep pitch-black cell. “Caitlin?” He spoke in his mind, recognizing her voice. He stood and started trying to follow the sound of her words. The more he walked the seemed the clearer they became.
Aurora looked down through the rafters counting the seconds hoping that he would wake soon and she hadn’t been to late with her magic. For the first time, she actually hoped Caitlin’s words would help to speed his return to the living, and rather than wanting her to shut up, Aurora silently urged her to continue.
“ . . . There have been nights where I desperately wanted to go to you and apologize for the way I’ve acted, denying you your husbandry right. You asked so little of me and gave me so very much.” James stopped, his confused panic and urge to get out of this strange darkness coming to a halt. He stood still listening to Caitlin’s voice, as they became clearer still.
Caitlin took a deep breath looking at his eyes, wishing she could have told him when they were open and he was here with her, not just in body. “I’ve wanted to tell you for a while, but I didn’t know how or when. I kept it to myself and close to my heart afraid to speak it aloud, and now . . .”
James looked around and started to run from place to place looking for a way out, but there was an extremely dark corner he opted to stay away from. “Let met out, let me out of here! Do you HEAR ME!?” He shouted wanting to get to Caitlin. HE could almost feel the torment she was in, in her voice. He took a few steps forward, breathing deeply as he looked about again. Was this death? Did he lay somewhere dying? He could hardly feel his own body, and he couldn’t see Caitlin anywhere. But he could hear her. It could not be dearth, he was still in his prime!
Tears started to well up in Caitlin’s eyes as her words were struggling to get passed the knot of sorrow that was causing her to choke on each syllable. “ . . . now I may have waited too long . . .” Reaching up, Cat gently cupped his face in her hands, running her fingertips against his cheeks that had been unshaven for a day or two. “I don’t want you to die James. I want you to stay here with me. I want to have even more time with you and I would do things differently then I have done in the past. I wouldn’t waste another moment. I would stand beside you, and support you in everything. Make love to you every night, and every waking moment . . . and tell you every day . . . . I would say the words I should have said for so long . . .” She paused another moment, as if still cautious about her words., but she wasn’t willing to let her fear get in the way this time.
Aurora watch up in the rafters, her small heart pounding in her chest. She wasn’t sure but she thought she saw a little bit of color coming back into James skin and he looked a little better. She shouted down to Caitlin to keep talking to him but there was no way Caitlin could hear her, for she was too small and her voice hardly carried into human ears when she was speaking directly into them.
After a moment, Caitlin was able to calm herself and pull back together and her eyes looked towards James face once more. Leaning down she gently kissed his lips as tears escaped her eyes and slid slowly down her cheeks. Aurora watched from above and her wings beat a few times and her eyes went wide as a flood of color came back to James face when Caitlin kissed him.
Caitlin’s lips party from Hook’s and she whispered softly, “I love you, James.” Her eyes opened and she looked down into his face, almost hoping to see him looking back up at her, but it was to no avail.
Inside James mind, he looked around in the darkness. After hearing those words “I love you” pass from Caitlin’s lips, there was nothing that could keep him from getting to her. All at once he seemed to know what had to be done, and he turned lunging into the darkest part of the pitch black cell, shattering the darkness like glass, an bursting into bright light that nearly blinded him.
Cat’s eyes were so full of tears she couldn’t see how much brighter and healthier his skin looked. “I love you.” She said once more, trying to bite back the weeping that was trying to claw its way out from inside of her. Still letting her fingers run through his long hair, as tears fell from her eyes onto his chest. Leaning down, she rested her face against him as the tears won and she tried to muffle her cries.
The blinding light that had stolen Hook’s vision from him started to dim and he could hear Caitlin was no longer far away, but perhaps close, even right next to him. He could actually feel drops of water falling against his chest and pressure there as well. Finally, he opened his eyes for the first time and looked up, seeing the canopy of his bed above him. He closed his eyes once more finding his head rather sore for some strange reason. “I love you, James.” Caitlin’s weeping voice whispered once more.
Hook took a deep breath and let it out slowly, placing his hand on her arm that lay next to him. Caitlin’s weeping turned into a few more sobs before she paused. With a gasp, she raised her head from his chest. Her eyes moved to his hand first which had indeed moved of its own will. Cat’s eyes went wide as she looked up at him. His head moved from left to right as signs of life were re-entering his body rapidly. She gasped for air finding that she wasn’t breathing as she watched him, and carefully placed her hand to his cheek. “James?” She whispered, hardly able to breathe afraid that if she did he would fall back to sleep.
His eyes opened and looked up at her for a moment. Her breath was still caught deep in her chest unable to escape past her throat, waiting for some sign that it wasn’t just some strange reaction to his injury she was witnessing. He closed his eyes for a moment as he began to speak, “My dear . . .” He said softly as his eyes opened, looking up at her once again, “ . . . I think . . . I am growing quite fond . . . of waking up to your . . .beautiful face.”
A bright light began to shine in Caitlin’s eyes as if the stars themselves rested there. Leaning forward she kissed him several times, unable to stop or contain herself at seeing his eyes and hearing his words again. Even with the utter joy that had just flooded her heart, her tears did not stop and she couldn’t catch a breath. Slowly, James moved his hand up to rest against her shoulder before wrapping around her and pulling against him, holding her tight.
After a few moments she pulled back, looking down into his eyes once more, running her fingers through his hair as he lay beneath her. “I thought I was losing you James . . .I was so afraid you were leaving me . . .” She said even more tears escaping from her eyes.
“Shhh,” He comforted her, pulling her down against him once again. “I would not leave you . . . not even if I was promised a pair of golden wings in the great beyond my love . . .” He whispered to her, holding her tight. It seemed strange, but he could find himself growing stronger by the moment and the pain that resided in his head was diminishing as each moment passed. Hook was never more content just to hold her in his arms as she lay over him, than he was at the moment. Having heard those words, the words he had dreamed she would say to him night after night. They had finally come at last. He started to move, wanting to lay her next to him on the bed, but she stopped him and pulled back wiping the tears away from her face.
“No no, my love. Don’t move, please. You must lie still, you’re still injured. You took such a hard blow to your head. I must go and tell the doctor so he can come check your condition and make sure the wound is healing as it should.” Leaning down she kissed him deeply. Hook’s arms began to encircle her again but she pulled away at the last moment, hurrying out of the cabin in her excitement. Hook had intended to keep her in his arms and not let her get away. The doctor could wait a lifetime, for he wanted her now, yet she was far to quick. James signed and lay back in the pillows of his bed, closing his eyes once more. After a moment he couldn’t help but chuckle to himself, realizing that all his dreams had at last come true. She did love him, truly and honestly and she had confessed it aloud for him to hear.
Aurora watched in the rafters above as a huge sigh of relief escaped from her seeing how much better he looked in just a few moments. He would not die now and his strength and health were returning rapidly. Her wings beat fast and she clapped her hands happily as she watched him move about more easily than he did at first.
James smiled as countless thoughts ran through his mind of plans for the future. Now that she loved him in return, as perhaps she had for quite sometime, but was not afraid or ashamed of her love any longer, so many doors would fly open before them. A true man and wife at last. Perhaps she would a house on dry land? A grand one, with curtains, rugs, and a massive bed. Even larger then this one that he laid upon now, and anything else in the universe she desired. It would all be decorated for her, in any manner she wished, in any colors or style she requested. Anything that was in his power to give her, he would gladly give it. Once she was steeled in and tucked away safely in a safe place that would be designed specifically to keep her from the hands of that devil known as Peter Pan, he would return to his other goal that had felled his every waking moment before he brought Caitlin back to Neverland; to capture and kill Pan so that they would all be free of the curse that bound them here preventing them from going back to the natural world to live out the rest of their lives.
After a while, they might even consider . . . All at once, James’ eyes flew open wide and he sat straight up. The child, she was with child now and had no way of knowing it. He had been arguing with himself over this very matter before they were all stolen away from the Jolly Rodger. James eyes moved towards the Cabin doors for a moment as he repeated the same question to himself once again. Should he tell her of the life she cared inside her, or erase it from their lives without her knowledge? If he told her now, after what she had confessed to him, she might renounce it for his hiding such things from her. Closing his eyes, he shook his head before funning his hand through his hair.
“Oh what a tangled web we weave . . .” He began. Quoting a bit of wisdom he remembered from a passage in a story. The relationship they had developed was such a delicate one. He had been lying to her from the very first day of their marriage and now there was such a large array of falsehoods in the way of the truth. Shaking his head he pushed all of this aside. “No. Not today. None of this will get in the way of ny day of joy at her words I have so longed to hear form her lips. One night of happiness before I let myself even consider what is to be done about the problem at hand.”
Hook began to lay back and close his eyes to rest until Caitlin returned with that blasted Doctor. He chuckled to himself, for even Liam’s presence couldn’t put a damper on the mood he was in now.
A while later Liam was examining Captain Hook having asked Caitlin to step out while he checked on the Captain’s condition and wounds. Liam felt the pulse in the Captain’s wrist and checked his eyes to make sure his responses were all correct and normal. “How is she doing Doctor?” James said breaking the silence. It was not in his usual malicious tone that he had grown accustomed to addressing the doctor in. Liam did notice it slightly but it could have also just been the concussion talking.
“She’s been here with ye. She hasn’t left yer side since we came back aboard the ship.” Liam moved his kit off the foot of the bed. “Lay down please Captain.” James did as was asked without the normal amount of arguing and bad temperament that went along with his previous check ups. It was obvious that he was anxious for this to be done with so that Caitlin could return and they could retire. “Mr. Smee has been bringin’ her food, makin’ her eat to keep her strength up.” Liam said plainly as he continued to examine the wounds the Captain had sustained. Strangely most of them had healed up already and quite nicely. No infections and not even a redness around the scars.
“Good. IF someone is not watching over her at all times, I would think she would let herself waste away in order to watch over me.” A smile tugged at Hook’s lips, knowing why she would not leave him now, but he suppressed it, deciding that it was none of Liam’s concern for the moment.
Liam felt as if he wanted to plunge his knife into the back of the Captain right at this point in time but knew that it would only return him to the sentence spoken before Caitlin was found alive. Perhaps by Caitlin’s own lips if he were to harm the Captain in anyway. “I need to check yer head wound Capt’n.” He said helping James to sit up. Slowly he began to unwrap the bandage from Hook’s head as James could feel the same hate radiating from Liam and remembered the words he’d spoken to Caitlin in the black castle but said nothing.
As Liam pulled the bandage away, he paused. “Good Lord.” He said in astonishment, dropping the white bandages to the floor. Hook looked up at him wondering what the devil he was looking at now. “Capt’n . . .the wound . . . its . . . gone.”
“What the devil are you going on about man? Have you gone mad?” Liam shook his head and ran over to James’ desk, picking up the hand mirror and bringing it back handing it to the Capt’n. James held it up and paused himself now. He was right, the wound was completely gone as if it had never been and he suddenly realized that the pain and constant throbbing that had been there since he’d woken up had disappeared. His eyes narrowed a moment as he lowered the mirror.
He stood slowly and began to pace as he mind tried to piece a few broken bits of information and speculation together. Something had indeed healed him and no doubt was in his mind that magic was involved. “Tell me, has Aurora been seen anywhere on this ship.” He said with his back to the doctor.
‘No Capt’n. Not that we’ve seen. Even if she was, yer misses has kept everyone out of yer Cabin since we got back so they wouldn’t disturb ye.” Turning back, he looked at the doctor before putting down the mirror. Hook walked over to his closet and opened the door.
“That will be all doctor, your services are no longer required for this evening. Please instruct my wife that I will join her on the deck presently.” Hook disappeared and closed the door behind him. Liam gave a large sigh of frustration and anger as he packed up his supplies and headed out of the Cabin. Caitlin was anxiously waiting outside the door and rushed over to Liam.
“How is he? Is he going to be alright, Doctor?” He said nothing to her at first, for he was unsure if he could keep from being angry with her as well for her ignorance. Caitlin blinked and quickly followed after him, not sure if he had heard her request or not. “Doctor? Tell me please, is he going to be alright?” Liam stopped and spun around looking at her. Her eyes were filled with a bright light of hope and worry. Some of his anger melted away and the rest turned into pity for her and her situation. Even now as she stood before him, she was with child and completely unaware of the fact.
“He’ll be alright Caitlin. His wounds have mostly healed and the one on his head . . . well . . . he’ll live to kill his share of lost boys.” Caitlin’s eyes closed as she gave a huge sigh of relief at this news. Liam shook his head slightly as he watched her. “He told me to tell ye that he’ll meet ye out here on the deck in a few minutes.” Liam turned and started to walk back down the stairs.
“Doctor!” Caitlin called not wanting him to leave without saying what she wanted to say. He stopped and turned looking back at her. Cat smiled, “Thank you Liam. Thank you for helping him.” She said more then grateful for his help. Liam just gave a slight nod of acknowledgment before turning and walking away.
