Hook’s Wendy
(Chapter Fifty-Nine)
Three days had gone by, and nights that were unmatched and to enchanting to put into words that any mortal, other than the two involved, could ever understand. Hook was fighting with his conscious each time he looked at Caitlin. The Captain continually intended to tell her, but couldn’t bring himself to ruin her day when she was in such a wondrous mood. “I shall tell her tomorrow.” Was a phrase he found himself repeating quite often lately.
He stood on deck looking out towards the island on this evening, arguing whim himself. He had never had a problem with saying whatever he had to say until now. It wasn’t something that could just be swept under the carpet; she would begin to notice rather quickly that she was growing. Perhaps she had already, James had noticed her abdomen was beginning to swell a bit during the past few nights. She was not a foolish women either, she would think nothing of it now because of what she had been told, but at some point she would realize the truth. When that time came, she would be even more angry with him when she realized he had known and never said anything.
Tonight he would tell her. He had to tell her. Nothing could stop him from telling her the truth for once, and he would put it off no longer. Giving a sigh, he threw his cigar over board and headed back to his cabin. Hook paused a moment, pulling his hand back from the door. Why did he have to tell her tonight? Couldn’t it wait just one more day? Hook shook his head, No. It had to be today. It could not be put off any longer. Reaching for the handle again he pulled the door open and stepped inside, just in time to almost get knocked over by Caitlin who was rushing out the door.
“OH James, I’m sorry!” She said quickly. “I didn’t see you there until it was too late.” Reaching for his arm she pulled him up and brushed off his coat with her hand. Hook was slightly stunned at the sudden collision, as he looked at her.
“Caitlin, what on earth is going on? Is there a fire on board the ship that requires your immediate attention?” Cat smiled at him and shook her head as she swooped down to pick up the book that she had dropped. “Come,” he said taking her hand. “I need to speak with you.” He began pulling her back towards his desk.
“Oh, James. Could it wait for a little while? It’s such a lovely night and I wanted to update my journal since it had been so long, in the warm night air.” She said showing him the book she carried was the gift he’d given to her months ago. The Gold letters that spelled out her name, “Caitlin Wendy Hook” were as bright as the day it was created. She had taken exceptionally splendid care of it. James looked into her eyes, that look of innocence and sincerity was always incredibly difficult to say no to.
“Well, perhaps a few moments . . .” Hook quickly shook his head. He couldn’t put this off any longer. “Caitlin, we need to speak now.” He began to say but she only heard the first few words and leaned up kissing his cheek.
“I won’t be but a few moments James, I promise. It’s a bright moon tonight so it won’t be hard to see what I write.” She quickly picked up her pot of ink and quill and darted out of the door before Hook could get in another word. He gave a sigh and took off his jacket tossing it aside. He supposed it would give him a chance to practice what he was going to say so he didn’t have to stutter over his words. They were perhaps the most difficult words he would ever have to speak, and he wanted them to be as gentle on her ears as they could be.
“Caitlin . . . I have something to tell you, that I regret to say I have known for quite sometime now . . .” James cleared his throat and started to pace slightly. Something about it didn’t sound right to his ears. “My darling, do you remember how you were so distraught that night over realizing the unfortunate fact that you could not bare children?. . . .” He rolled his eyes and paced again trying to think of a better way. “There are times in a mans life, when he has to make decisions that are not always correct and that are not in anyone’s best interest but his own . . .” James stopped and shook his head at that last attempt. “Well why do I not just tell her I am a selfish devil who cares nothing for her at all while I’m at it.” He scolded himself.
On the deck of the Jolly Rodger, Caitlin rushed up to the deck near the forward bow of the ship. There were several supply boxes and crates close to the railing and it always served as a nice place to sit and look out towards the island. Setting down the ink and quill, she opened up her pages and began to write in them. Her hand seemed as if it couldn’t move fast enough to meet the thoughts running through her mind. The smile on her face was quite bright, and let it be known that she was quite happy and had only good things to pour onto the pages.
James stood in front of his desk pacing back and forth trying to think of someway that would make that would make it easier for them to get past this, and not make her hate him for what he had kept a secret. “Caitlin . . . you are the most beautiful woman I have ever had the privilege of calling my wife . . . .” Hook paused and arched a brow at this. He had never been married before in his entire life, nor did he consider it at any time. That sentence was entirely irrelevant and inaccurate to say the very least. He stopped at the middle of his desk and took a solid stance with a smile across his face, “Caitlin! You are with child!” He said with his arms open wide. Closing his eyes he shook his head again, “Oh good lord.”
As Caitlin sat writing in her journal, she was unaware of anything really going on around her. She couldn’t feel the eyes that were set upon her, near the steps that led to the forward deck. Liam quietly watched her as she sat alone, not daring to talk to her now. He and the rest of the crew had witnessed a definite change over the past few days and it was obvious that the Captain and his wife were at last at peace with each other. Nothing could be done now. She wouldn’t leave him and he certainly had no intentions of letting her go.
There were several more pairs of eyes upon her as well in the darkness just below the rail of the ship she sat near. Peter, and several fairies waited patiently for their chance as it seemed that the clever boy had come up with yet another plan. As they still acused Caitlin of being the evil fairy that they had all been searching for. The Indians had explained why she could not be killed. For the secret that James would have preferred not to get out, was given to the Indians when Liam went ashore searching for knowledge on the subject of baring a child in Neverland. Another way had to be found, and this way seemed to be the perfect way.
She would be gone, and at the same time a challenge would be made to Captain Hook to set their game of Cat and Mouse ablaze once more. As it was before he brought the pirate lady to Neverland.
Back in James cabin he sat down at his desk and poured himself a glass of wine, before setting the bottle aside. Hook took a long drink from the glass and set it down. Closing his eyes he leaned back in the chair trying to find the words to say to her, as it seemed the right ones continued to escape him. He was still not quite fond of the idea of having children. Sharing her was absolutely not something he wanted to do at any point much less in just a few short months. But he could not bring himself to give her the pharmaceutical concoction he had ordered the doctor to create. Only God knew what side affects would be caused by giving her such a thing, and it could harm her in a way that was fatal. He couldn’t risk that, the price was far to high. Hook reached for the side drawer of his desk. He took out a key and unlocked it, before pulling it open taking out a familiar book. The only thing that had come to Neverland with Caitlin when he brought her back many months ago. Her journal with all the memories of her old life intact. Perhaps the memory of her accident would stay safe, and once the child was born, it would be erased all together.
James began to slowly turn through the pages, hoping to find something in words she had written that would help him know what to say to her. He paused on the page she had pasted a photograph of her parents, and studied it for a moment. Caitlin did look quite a bit like her mother. IT was strange that he had never noticed it before now. He realized that in all the time she had been here in Neverland, never once had her mother come up in conversation. Of course her Father repeatedly came up, considering the like that they were betrothed rested on an agreement made with her father. Hook wondered what sort of memories would be sparked if her mother was mentioned. She seemed not to remember her father very well, if at all. But mothers were a completely different story altogether. Shaking his head he turned the pages again looking for anything useful.
Aurora sat in the rafters looking down at James, noticing how much better he looked. Bright, healthy . . . . even happy. She sighed a little knowing that she wasn’t really the cause of his happiness, or the joy which radiated from his being. It was his human female who had made him this way. Aurora merely kept him from dying so he could enjoy being alive with his love. She sighed softly. She was happy to see him alive, and well . . . but her small heart sank that it was not her whom he wanted to live for. A small black tear escaped her eyes as she slid back into the rafters crying softly.
Caitlin dipped her quill in the ink before starting to write another sentence but she stopped. A pebble came over the side rail and hit the deck making a loud blunt sound. Cat jumped a bit and got up from her place holding her journal in her hands as she went to investigate. After a moment, it grew deathly quiet and she was certain she was just imagining things. She turned back and started walking back to her seat. Just then another pebble came over the rail and hit the deck again. Cat spun about scanning the area around her. Slowly, she stepped backwards keeping her eyes wide open. Once she got back to the supply boxes she sat down. Her eyes were still wide, and her knuckles were white from how tight she was holding the book. Slowly she slid her hand down touching the hilt of the dagger that James had ordered forged for her making sure it was where she could reach it easily.
Liam moved a little closer so he was in a shadow and could see her better without the candlelight from the lanterns hindering his vision. She seemed awfully upset about something. As if something had frightened her or someone had just walked over her grave. The doctor felt the urge to go up and speak with her, so she wouldn’t feel like she was alone but decided it was better that she didn’t know he was there watching her. It would only lead to some argument and he was certain that he was still out of her favor. Now he could only admire her from afar, for his stupidity had nearly annulated their friendship.
“What are ye doin’ Doc?” Smee’s voice came at a whisper as he stood next to Liam. He knew Caitlin was about and didn’t want to startle her. The doctor turned and saw the first make looking very suspiciously at him. “Ye know yer not supposed to go near her when she’s alone doc. If the Capt’n catches yet, it’ll be the last thing ye ever see.”
“I’m not near her, I’m here and she’s there. She don’t even know I’m here.” Liam looked back towards Caitlin. “Somethin’s goin on Mr. Smee. She seems spooked fer some reason.” Smee narrowed his eyes but decided to look for himself. Caitlin looked around one more time to be sure she was alone, before leaning back against the railing and opening her journal pages again.
Picking up her quill, she dipped it into the pot of ink and started to write her thoughts on paper again. Cat began to silently scold herself for being so paranoid. Of course she had been taken captive more then once and treated harshly, but she was aboard the Jolly Rodger now. James was here, and he had taught her how to defend herself. There was no reason to be afraid.
Suddenly, she felt hands on the back of her dress and looked up with wide eyes. This she definitely wasn’t imagining, it was really happening. Before she could move or call out for help, she was jerked over the side railing with a scream. Her journal flew out of her hands and landed on the deck.
“CAITLIN!” Liam called out in a panic seeing her disappear. Both the doctor and the first mate quickly scrambled from the lower deck. Liam to where Caitlin was sitting to look over the side to see if she fell into the cold Neverland waters below, and Smee ran for the alarm and started ringing the bell as hard as he could. The pirates started flooding on deck from below with weapons drawn. Smee rushed back to where Liam was standing looking over the side as well. The doctor looked at the first mate, “She’s gone! There’s no sign of her! It’s as if she had never hit the water!”
James looked up as the bell began to sound, wondering what on earth was going on this time of night. Quickly pushing Caitlin’s journal into his desk he closed the drawer and locked it back up tightly. “What is it this time, is there no mercy in the world that would let us have a moments rest!” Standing quickly he headed out of the cabin slamming the doors open. Hook scolded himself for letting Caitlin go out on the deck the night something was amiss. He should have had a stronger constitution to tell her no and sat down for the talk he had to give.
Smee looked around before going from one side of the ship to the other, checking the sides to make sure she wasn’t anywhere to be found. “It wouldn’t be the mermaids this time. They haven’t come around the ship in months. Not after . . .well . . .ye know.”
“WHAT THE DEVIL IS GOING ON OUT HERE!” James roared walking up to Smee and Liam. “Who sounded the alarm!” He looked about the deck. “Where is Caitlin!?!” Smee stepped back swallowing. James looked towards Liam for some sort of answer, but he just turned his eyes downward. Hook didn’t like this at all. They should have been much faster to point her out to him than this. “Did you not hear me? WHERE IS MY WIFE YOU IDIODIC MORONS!?!” Still no answer came from anyone, and James started to fear that she was the reason the alarm was sounded. Hook lowered his voice as he turned looking at the rest of the crew, “Where is she. DAMNIT SPEAK!!!”
“THERE!” One of the pirates called out. James pushed his way through the crowd to the far rail and looked out in horror. There was Peter Pan, holding an unconscious Caitlin in his arms hovering above the water. Pan just looked at James with a smirk on his face. Several fairies flew around Peter and the woman he held in his arms, covering them both with fairy dust.
It was like a nightmare, he was trapped in a nightmare. Each time he got her back, she was snatched away from him. Only this time, instead of her disappearing all together, there was that boy, that brat, that mischievous demon who had no scruples whatsoever holding her in his arms. Taunting him as if to say, “Kill me now, my life means nothing to me any longer.” Had this idiot of a child not realized yet that fooling with Caitlin in anyway was deadly and dangerous? Obviously not, for here he was again. Hook closed his eyes for a moment hoping he was going to wake up in his cabin with Caitlin lying beside him in his arms. Yet when he opened his eyes, he was still here, looking at the same nightmarish sight.
Hook’s eyes flashed red as he looked at the boy. “You insolent offspring of Satan . . . RELEASE HER!!!” He roared in hate and anger towards his one mortal enemy. Pan gave him an unconcerned look and did just as he said, releasing Caitlin from his grasp. “NO!” Every pirate aboard gasped as Hook leaned against the railing in horror, knowing Caitlin couldn’t even try to swim whilst she was asleep. From how high she had been dropped she would hit the water exceptionally hard, and Liam could hardly breathe knowing what it could do to her in her current condition.
Right before she hit the water, Peter caught her by the wrist and jerked her back up to where they had been hovering before. James felt his stomach turn at how roughly the boy was handling her. As if she was nothing more than a rag doll, or a puppet on a string. “CAREFUL WITH HER YOU SWINE!” James shouted, knowing she was with child, James realized her health hung in the balance. For the first time, Peter Pan had found the only button that could be pushed in order to make James consider surrendering. What other choice did he have? Hook grit his teeth together, “What do you want.” He spat at the boy. If only words could rip throats from a distance.
“Hmmm, I think I . . . . want to see how fast she falls?” He said with a grin as he dropped her again, waiting right before she almost hit the water before catching her by both wrists this time and pulling her back up into the air. He found it quite hilarious to see all of the dangerous pirates, including the deadliest one of all, gasping in fear and absolute terror. James eyes started to glow red but he closed them a moment, and when he opened them they were blue once more.
“BRING HER ABOARD THE SHIP! NOW! And I might make your death a quick one instead of making it last for days or weeks!” James roared not being able to control his anger at this mistreatment of his wife. Peter Pan just chuckled watching James, as he played slightly. Holding onto Caitlin’s wrist’s tightly flying about in patterns.
Hook grew furious and his eyes began to glow as he reached for the riffle that one of the pirates was holding. Putting his foot against the railing he took aim. “BRING HER BACK NOW! Or I swear I will shoot you through that fist full of teeth in your EVIL grin!!” He yelled.
Peter stopped and put his arm around Caitlin’s waist, pulling his dagger and holding it to her throat. “Who will keep her from falling then James Hook? Does she know how to fly?” He asked with a dark look in his eyes, still smiling like some Cheshire cat with his mischief.
Hook lowered the weapon, hating the fact that this child for once held him over a barrel instead of the other way around. “You call yourself noble, and honorable, and the defender of justice for this world. You are nothing but a MOCKERY OF ALL THOSE BELIEFS!!! Obviously they have become meaningless to you if they ever held any meaning to begin with! How DARE you treat a woman in this manner. She was done NOTHING TO YOU, YOU MISERABLE LITTLE WRECH!”
Peter Pan just laughed at Hook, knowing there was nothing he could do. Suddenly, a small redheaded boy appeared on deck. He had been staying on the ship with the doctor in the infirmary. The doctor had kept it a secret that he was living on board to keep the Captain from ordering him off. He had tears in his eyes seeing Caitlin taken captive again. Running to the rail he held his arms up towards her, as if asking for Peter to bring her back to him. “It’s to late for that Danny! You should have thought of that before you turned pirate! You’re not one of us anymore, you’re one of them!” He shouted. As he yelled, the tip of his blade made a small cut on Caitlin’s neck. James eyes began to glow bright red as he started to take aim with the gun once more. The fairies flew up next to Peter’s ears speaking to him and the smile faded from his face as he looked at them before giving a slight nod. Turning he started to fly away from the ship. Hook’s eyes grew wide as he called out.
“BLAST YOU BOY!” He roared across the water. He threw the gun aside disarming himself. “If it’s me you want, HERE I AM! Take me but let her free! She is innocent of whatever you and your miscreant band of rejects have decided to charge her with! Take me instead of her if there is a decent bone left in your disgusting little body!” Peter turned and looked at James a moment.
“We’ve come for her, old man. Not you. I’ll save you for another day.” Peter smirked at James before flying up into the air away from the ship, disappearing into the vast sky above with Caitlin in his arms. Hook turned and pulled a pistol from one of the nearby pirates and fired it towards Pan, knowing full well that he was out of range. He began to go on a rampage, knocking pirates out of his way in every direction. Over the side of the ship, on the deck, wielding his hook and tearing the flesh from anyone who stood his ground open and spilling their blood as his eyes glowed bright red.
Liam picked up Danny and hurried below to the infirmary, hoping that out of sight is out of mind really worked for both of their sakes. He put the large board across the door securing it so it wouldn’t be easily opened.
“We shall find him, WE SHALL FIND HIM AND SKIN HIM ALIVE!!! Or every last one of you will be gutted and put on display until the maggots have eaten your flesh and the birds have taken your hair for their nests!” He yelled kicking yet another pirate over the side of the ship. “I want her brought back to me, I want her brought back to me NOW!!”
His anger was completely out of control. He was barking orders had dead men, and ones that were brutally wounded and he still continued to reek havoc as he moved through the crowd who were trying to escape him. Not wanting to be the next victim. As he turned his eyes had turned a scarlet, blood red color, a deep red crimson. “ENOUGH OF THIS BILDGE! She has been taken away from me to many times! And now . . . NOW SHE IS WITH CHILD AND IS NOT EVEN AWARE OF IT!” He plunged his hook deep into the chest of one of the nearby pirates, and swung him around before throwing him over the side of the ship as well. Now, his eyes caught a glimpse of the little old man who had been appointed to long ago remember when.
Smee began to back away as the Captin was coming straight for him. He tripped over a coil of rope and fell to the ground. “Capt’n . . .Capt’n! . . .uh this . . .this is no way . . . to CAPT’N!!!” James stood over the quivering first mate, and raised his hook preparing to strike. However, he froze in place in mid swing. The air grew cold, and dark and clouds filled the sky over the ship and island. The red of his eyes faded as he looked upwards. His worst fear was coming true. Hook ran quickly up towards the bow of the ship, looking into the sky. “NOOOOOO!!!” Hook screamed, as snow began to fall over the ship, signifying only one thing.
Peter Pan had once again left Neverland into the other world . . . and taken Caitlin with him.
