Chapter 6
A Glimpse of Fear
It was an awesome, no, extravagant room. Candles, here and there along the walls, only gave a soft glow, so I couldn’t exactly see everything but what I could see blew me away. The ceiling was so high that it was impossible to see all the way up with out it going black. The candles’ flames just weren’t enough.
I was standing by the bottom of a winding set of stairs. What else was going to happen I didn’t know. So I stood, my fingers nervously tapping against the extravagant banister of the staircase, wondering what in the hell I was waiting for. The female vampire left me to myself after showing me in. Which defiantly didn’t bother me. I’d rather have no company than have hers.
After about three minutes I looked at my watch. I really didn’t have time for this. Images of me telling David off flashed through my head. It was magnificent and beautiful…but something that would never come to pass since all in all I needed this job. No one but I really knew it but money was tight. I continued tapping my nails against the banister until something caught my eye. Slowly I smoothed my hand over the slick ebony wood till it came to the end. It was carved into a head of a lion -no- tiger. I knew enough about animals to tell the difference. The fact that it was a lion’s head and not a bear’s head I found strange, since the master obviously had a thing for bears. But oh well, wasn’t like I actually knew him.
I heard footsteps and just about jumped out of my skin. I took a few steps away from the staircase just to be on the safe side. I was assuming who ever was coming down was wearing boots and male since the footsteps were loud enough to echo throughout the gigantic room. I guess it was a bit sexist but oh well.
The man came down ever so slowly. I almost began to wonder if time had suddenly gone into slow motion just for him. His boots were knee high with metal straps that jingled with his every step. From that I could see tight leather pants that could have been mistaken for a second skin if the man himself hadn’t been caramel complected. He was naked from the waist up. His upper body perfect, as if some master sculptor had chiseled him from pure granite then buffed him to complete smoothness. His body was hard and tone in places that most men weren’t. I felt myself break out in a bit of a sweat. Damn hormones. Long, black, silky hair fell over his shoulders in such a way that it made me wonder when the last time I did something with my own hair was. His face was oval shaped along with high cheekbones that made me want to say Asian, but he had with just enough Anglo Saxon features to make me wonder if his mother or father had been Caucasian. All in all he was gorgeous.
“Alicia?,” he said my name as if it was some foreign word.
“And you are?.” I asked, trying to act as normal as possible.
His masculine lips pulled back in some sort of smile. “Haruko,” His name fell off his lips quick and effortlessly. I was pretty sure it was Japanese. “Well, then.” He began again as if his name was of no real importance. He took the last step and was now standing only a foot or two away. “Let me be the first to welcome you here.”
My eyes meandered down his front, taking notice to the round ring in his right nipple. Ouch. “Exactly where is ‘here’?” I asked taking a step back. At the moment I wasn’t afraid of him I just didn’t like being so close. All he’d have to do is reach out and he’d touch me. A thought I knew should be discomforting but oddly enough seemed a bit enjoyable…another reason why I knew I had to distance myself.
What had resembled a smile was now gone, hidden behind an unreadable face. He brought his hand up to push back some of the long locks that had fallen over his shoulders in a move that was utterly feminine, but he some how made it drip with masculinity.
“To outsiders it is simply called, ‘The Meeting Room’.” He finally replied.
The meeting room? I thought to myself. The name defiantly didn’t do the extravagant structure any justice.
I had a feeling my thoughts were being displayed on my face because he said:
“It is the English translation…roughly.” He folded his arms across his chest. That’s when I noticed the studded arm bracelets, which seemed to emphasize the size of his biceps.
Then out of nowhere I felt as if something had walked straight through me. Like a ghost made out of pure energy. I gave an involuntary shake and I could’ve sworn I saw Haruko’s skin jump like horse’s coat.
There was tension in the air now. His gaze became intense but I met it anyway. Chills ran up my left arm turning into sort of an electric vibration. I had no worries starring into his eyes because I knew that he was not the Master Vampire, not even a vampire actually but a Were. Since my mind seemed to always act towards animals it only made sense that it would do the same toward a Were’s beast. I can usually tell what flavor they are and at times even feel their emotions, which isn’t always so great. I knew I should start suppressing the immense urges my mind was having. But I gave in. I was curious so I let it do as it wished.
My mind felt like a giant invisible hand reaching out for him as he stood there at the bottom of the steps. It ran along him gently, feeling along his smooth skin, almost caressing it in a way, till it finally plunged in full force. I heard him gasp aloud then suddenly before I knew what was happening I felt an enormous power. It was like someone had hurled my ‘mind’s hand’ right back at me. There was an impact at my temple sending me flying backwards.
I was like a little rag doll as I went skidding along the glossy floor, my body numb for a few fleeting moments. I don’t think my consciousness had caught up with what had just happened. I looked up at the dark ceiling and finally blinked sending pain shooting through my cranium. My head felt like it had been hit with a baseball bat. I heard Haruko on the steps mumble something in his native language, something that might have been equivalent to the good ol’ American “Oh shit!”
The buckles from his boots jingled at a fast pace as I watched him run over to me from the corner of my eye. But thankfully I finally caught up with myself and knew what was going on before he got too close
“No!” I yelled when he was in full view. I scrambled to get onto my feet but only managed to get on my hands and knees. Everything around me seemed to sway as if I were sailing on a boat. Not a good sign. “Just stay the hell away!”
“I am so sorry Alicia.” Once again he made my name sound as if it were something foreign. Haruko crouched down next to me, his hair slipping completely over his shoulders, nearly touching the ground. The candlelight seemed to shine along his naked chest.
I panicked and backpedaled from the beautiful man before me. Whatever had happened before I didn’t want happening again. “Just stay away!” I yelled trying to gather up my pocket book in a mad frenzy. Inside I new I had all the protection I needed.
Though I thought I was reaching for my purse I obviously wasn’t. Every time I grabbed for it I seemed to touch only air. My vision was off. Another bad sign.
“Stop. You should lie down.” He reached for me and I backpedaled again. Or rather I attempted to backpedal. My feet just seemed to slip and slide along the slick floor. lt tlt trapped like a small little mammal looking into the jaws of a rabid fox. My heart beat faster and faster. I was panicking even though I knew I should stay calm. It was after all one of the first rules I governed my life by. But why wasn’t I listening to myself?
“Alicia, look at me.” He was pleading with me now, his body inching towards me every few seconds, face unreadable. “You might be going into shock. Please lie down.”
“No! Just stay-“
And that was it. I remembered nothing after that point. It was if a black veil slowly descended over my eyes and I felt and saw nothing but darkness.
