I can't really give a good summary without giving the plot away. Hmmm, Watson comes to realize that his innter voice is a pain and the angst returns. Holmes and Watson aren't mine and I don't make any money from them.
The tread of heavy feet on the landing woke Watson. He looked around and found himself alone is his old room. It had all been a dream. Holmes was still below, maybe still alive. With a sigh he stood and went to his door to listen. Below he could hear Mycroft giving orders to Mrs. Hudson to watch Holmes and notify him of any changes. Anger flared in Watson’s heart; Mycroft couldn’t even be bothered to remain and watch over his brother, he was leaving. Probably to take care of the Queen and her international crisis.
Once the downstairs door shut, Watson crept out of his room and down the stairs. Mrs. Hudson was waiting for him, a tray in her hands. “I knew you wouldn’t have left Mr. Holmes but didn’t say anything,” she said, handing him the tray. “I’ve sent a note to your wife telling her you’ll be here for a few days with a sick patient and not to worry about you. Now eat and you’ll feel better.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Hudson,” Watson said, taking the tray. “Will you let me know if the elder Mr. Holmes returns?”
“Of course, Doctor.”
With a smile she opened the door for Watson and then left him alone. The sitting room was a shambles but the only thing Watson could bring himself to do was pick up the violin and put it safely away before carrying his late supper into Holmes’ bedroom.
Sherlock lay where Watson left him, on his small bed, covered with a blanket. As Watson looked at him he could see that Holmes was barely breathing and he was still deathly still. With a soft sigh Watson sat in the chair next to the bed and looked closer. The professional side of his brain said that it was hopeless and the man in front of him would die. The personal side protested and said that Holmes had to get better because life without him would be impossible. *But you’ve been living a life without him quite happily for more than a year now* a little voice in his head whispered. *So why not just leave him to his choice and go home to your wife*
*There was always a chance of seeing him* argued Watson. *Holmes just has to get better because the world can’t do without him*
*But what about you* asked the voice smugly. *Sherlock Holmes doesn’t care about the world, he only cares for you. Even if you do bring him back, you’re still a married man. Why deny him this chance to do what he wishes? To bring him back to an empty life would be murderous. Could you really do that to him*
*I can’t just let him go* Watson protested. *There’s so much I still want to tell him*
*Oh yes, I can really believe that* the voice said. *That’s why you ran away from him and kept running, so fast and far that you drove him to this. All he wanted was to know that you knew how he felt and would remain his friend. Sherlock was scared that you’d abandon him the instant you learned of his feelings and that kept him silent. But he finally took a choice. And it looks like his was right, as always. Even though you promised him you would remain friends no matter what, you turned your back on him and ran away. You’re a coward*
Watson shook his head, trying to clear the voice from his mind. But it went on as if someone else was talking to him. *Sherlock is a man who keeps things to himself. You’ve always know that about him. Can you even guess what it took for him to open up to you as he did? What it cost the man to tell another that he was helpless around them? Now, because of your reaction, even if he does recover, he won’t be the same. Nothing will be the same again between you. All because you’re too stupid and selfish to realize what was given you that day in the country. And now you want to bring him back. For what? More unhappiness? More pain? More time alone in these rooms he once shared with you? Dr. John Watson, you are a heartless bastard who barely deserves that title*
