-----------------------------------------------------------------------
“Aslan please.” Lucy couldn’t help her self. “I don’t want to leave. I..feel it in my heart. I don’t wish to leave Narnia or..” She got quiet. “Or..”
“Lucy calm down.” Aslan stepped forward. “You need not fear me child. You should not look so worried either Mr. Tumnus. Have a seat at the table. I have had some drinks brought for you.”
“Thank you Aslan.” Lucy looked up at him. “I..know I should not be worried but I am sir. I fear what you will say to me. I fear that you will send me away to Spare Oom where my sister and Brothers have been returned.”
Tumnus let her speak while he walked over to the table. It was set up beside the window that over looked the ocean. He sighed and pulled the chair out for her. Lucy glanced between him and Aslan. Her heart was torn as too what she should do.
“I appreciate your honestly with me.” Aslan stepped closer and nudged her forward, with his head, towards the table. “You really do love Narnia.”
“Yes sir.” Lucy stepped away from him and sat in the chair Tumnus pulled out for her. She turned to face Aslan. She could not think of eating or drinking at the moment. Tumnus was standing quietly behind the chair. “I..love Narnia with all my heart. I feel like I belong here. I...don’t wish to leave Narnia or..”
“Calm.” Aslan sat down in front of her on his hind legs. “I will say that it surprised me greatly. I thought the four of you had gone but then I learned that you stayed.” He chuckled deeply. “All of Narnia’s rulers have loved her but I do not think any have loved her so strongly as you.”
“Really?” She looked up from the spot that had previously interested her on the floor. Her hand went back and held Tumnus’s without thinking. “I..just feel that I..am more a part of here then I was where ever Spare Oom was.”
“I see you have come to love..much more than Narnia.” Aslan looked up at Tumnus and then back at her. “You love her people..You love one more than the others.”
“Yes.” She nodded. “I..do. I do not wish to leave him or Narnia.”
“You love her as well.” The lion looked right into Tumnus’s eyes. “Don’t you?”
“More than you could ever know my lord.” Tumnus held her hand still. “I have..always loved her.”
“True love is a rare gift.” Aslan shifted his front paws slightly. “Even in Narnia.”
“It is very real and true.” Tumnus nodded. “I know this with every fiber of my moral being.”
“So I see.” He stood. Aslan had that ‘thinking’ look in his eyes. “You never had any worry about me sending you away Lucy. Narnia has her own magic. It was that magic that she used to help you know inside to not follow. It is true that I did send them home however. I did not think you would be separated. For that I ask you to forgive me. I did not know the hurt that would come. I also did not expect the land to stop you.”
“I..” Lucy was thinking about them again. Aslan sent them away? “Aslan why? Why send them away? You can surely bring them back if you were the one to send them.”
“Because Narnia’s destiny and complete future lies with those two thrones.” He motioned to the pair that now occupied the space where four once sat. “They are the thrones for the destined queen and king of Narnia.”
“Does this mean my time as queen is over?”
Lucy was relieved that she could stay. She couldn’t be greedy and expect to stay queen. Aslan shook his head and gave a deep laugh. It was a comforting laugh if you knew him. Tumnus had his arms wrapped around her by now and was holding her. When Aslan said he never intended to send her away he had just grabbed on. Lucy didn’t really mind either so she hugged him right back.
“No.” Aslan nodded to the couple. “Once a king or queen of Narnia, always a queen or king of Narnia.”
“I..am afraid I do not understand about the thrones then.” She blinked. “Unless..unless Peter..comes back?” She gasped. “His crown was the only one to stay. That is what the note said that I got from them.”
“You will have to learn the answers to that. I am here to help with the trouble that comes and to help you.” Aslan walked over to the window and stared out of it. “Narnia may face a new enemy. This time though..” He turned and looked at them again. “We have queen Lucy here already.”
“T..Trouble?” Lucy looked worried all over again. “Aslan, w..what kind of trouble?”
“I fear that a very ancient enemy will return. I sensed something in the air. I was not sure what it was. This old enemy vowed to return and claim the throne of Narnia for him self.”
“I won’t let him.” Lucy stood suddenly. “I will not let anyone hurt Narnia.”
“Spoken like a true queen.” He glanced at her. “You have help.”
“Yes she does.” Tumnus stepped up beside her. “I will not let anyone hurt Narnia either. I will fight just as I did before to protect her. You have my loyalty Aslan. You have my loyalty queen Lucy.”
“I am glad to hear that.” Aslan was walking towards the exit of the throne room. “I will be in touch soon. Until then, be aware.”
“Aslan?” Lucy ran forward and grasped his mane in a hug. He purred and nuzzled against her. “Aslan where are you going?”
“I go to gather information and friends.” He pulled away from her. “I shall return. I promise.” Aslan glanced to Tumnus. “Please watch over her while I am away.”
“Be careful Aslan.” Lucy stepped back and away to Tumnus slowly. “Narnia would be lost without you.”
“Narnia would still have you.”
The lion spoke as he moved through the doors. He was gone now. Lucy turned to face Tumnus. She was both happy and scared. He was not going to send her away. She could stay and be with Tumnus but there was also worry. She didn’t have to speak that worry either because he was worried for the same reasons. There was an unknown enemy that even scared Aslan. An ancient enemy that wanted the throne for him self.
“Tumnus?”
“I know.” He wrapped his arms around her and sighed. “I am worried too.” The faun never saw Aslan look so serious or sad before.”Lucy? Have you..ever seen Aslan this way before? He..seems so ..” He shook his head. It was hard to put the right word on it.
“Sad.” Lucy nodded. “He seems very sad and anxious.” She had seen him like this once before. It was when she and Susan were walking him to the stone table. “I have seen him once. It was..sad and happy. It was a long time ago and..I just know something like that would never happen again.”
“I don’t think I wish to ask.” It did not sound pleasant from the way she talked.”Here.” Tumnus pulled away from his hug with her and smiled. “You need to sit and drink something. Your nerves are as on end as mine.”
“It has been a very stressful week or so hasn’t it?” She sat down in the chair once again. “I never thought so much could happen in such a short time.”
“Neither did I.” He sat across form her and poured her a drink of her favorite Berry juice. “The bad thing is it is still happening.” He sighed and slid the glass over. “From how Aslan spoke, this is what I deduce anyways.”
“I have a terrible gut feeling all of this has only just begun.”
“What ever happens.” Tumnus smiled. “You will have me and Aslan by your side to help.” He placed the glass in her hand for her. “And I am sure you will have all of Narnia as well.”
“Something he said is bothering me though.” She finally sipped at the cup of juice. “I can’t place why but it is just what he said and how he said it.”
“What is it?”
“It was about those.” She pointed to the thrones. “Those thrones are for the destined king and queen of Narnia.” She leaned back and her eyes were cast down.”I..I don’t know. I suppose I will have to think on it more. It was when he said Narnia would still have me that I started thinking about it I guess.”
“That is a puzzle.”
“Aslan is so benevolent and well spoken though. Surely he meant nothing bad would happen. Somehow we will all come through this.” She smiled at Tumnus. “We will come through it all together.”
“Yes we will.” He reached over the table and held her hand. “If there is one thing that I have learned it is this. Things in Narnia happen for a reason. We may not always know why or how or even understand them but they do happen. The reasons always come in the end and it is always for the best sake of Narnia.”
“It was not in Narnia’s best interest to send Peter and them away.” She grunted. Maybe she was a little upset at Aslan for doing this. Or maybe she was more upset because he would not bring them back. “Especially if something is coming again. Peter was a good leader. Edmund was brave and true. Susan was kind and always made sure everyone was okay by doing what she had to.”
“You are a leader too Lucy. Aslan’s decision may seem unclear now but maybe it will become clear. Maybe he will decide to bring them back. They said they were going to try and come back. I don’t think it is impossible but..I do think we shouldn’t get angry right away.”
“How ..did you know..I..”
“Lucy I can see it in your eyes. The hurt is still there. It became more apparent when he told you he was the one that sent them back.”
“Well It is not fair.” She looked up at him. “Was it wise to send them when he knew trouble was coming. If it was not for Narnia, I would be gone too.”
“Perhaps he did it because Narnia is coming into a new beginning with a destined king and queen.” Tumnus motioned to the thrones. “Perhaps there is more to it than he has explained to us this day.”
“There is always more.” She sighed. “And I can’t help it.” Lucy idly let her fingers trace over his hand. “But I guess..he did apologize to me and he did not send me away.”
“He didn’t have to and yes..he didn’t make you leave.” Tumnus smiled. “I don’t think Narnia would have let him send you away though.”
“It still hurts inside Tumnus. I miss them so much. With everything that is happening, I miss them even more.”
“It will hurt. You love them.” He stood and extended his hand to her. “Come on. We can go for a walk. You said you missed the beach.”
“I did miss it. A walk might help.”
“So come on silly.” Tumnus chuckled. “We can go for one.”
“Alright.” She smiled. “You know?” Lucy stood and suddenly hugged him tightly. “I would be a mess if you weren’t here with me.”
“Correction. You would be a beautiful mess.” He hugged her back. His chin rested just above her crown. “As for me being here? Death couldn’t keep me away.”
“You will not die.” She looked up at him as she pulled away. “That is a royal command. You will stay alive so you can be here with me.”
“I guess I will have to follow that since it is a royal command.”
“That’s right.” She smiled. “Now..about that walk you promised me?”
“Coming right up.”
He held her hand and led her to the doors. Lucy sighed and leaned against him. She was thankful that he was here with her. It really was the truth. She would probably be a stressed out, rough looking mess. That is IF she was even still here. He came along at just the right time when he found her first off. She was ready to get up and run through that path to find everyone. So she owed being here to him in a way. She also owed Narnia a thanks because it also helped her.
When they exited the palace doors they saw Aslan down the steps. He was talking to Kale.
“Of course my lord.” Kale nodded to Aslan. “My herd is at yours and queen Lucy’s call.”
“Thank you.” Aslan turned his head to see Tumnus and Lucy. “And thank you for bringing him here. I was just on my way to go and find him.”
“You..wanted to talk to Kale sir?” Lucy raised a brow. “He..came to help me in the wood. When I first lost..” She didn’t finish that. “He and his men helped me to search and then agreed to escort my self and Tumnus to Cair Paravel.”
“It was our pleasure to do so Majesty.” Kale smiled. “My herd likes it here. I just have to send a messenger to get the rest here.”
“Very good.”Aslan nodded. “I will let you do that.” He turned face Lucy and Tumnus fully. “I have to go a few more places. Kale has some men set up at certain points to help guard you.”
“Aslan?” Lucy was really worried now. “You...seem so..anxious. Is everything alright? Has something happened that we do not know about?”
“Nothing has happened yet.” He walked closer to them. Kale was already off to do his duty. “It does not hurt to be cautious in these unknown times though.”
“You...said this ebemy was an ancient one.” Tumnus said. “My lord? Can you..tell us about it? Has this enemy attacked before?”
“This is an old foe.” Aslan sighed. “The first time he showed him self was when Narnia had just been born.” The lion closed his eyes. “I managed to defeat him and send him away from Narnia before he could cause real trouble. I hoped he would not find his way back. I still hope he has not. He is someone we should all fear though and we should all be very careful.”
“Who is he Aslan?” Lucy touched the mane of the lion softly. She could see he was very serious. “Who..is this person.”
“My...” Aslan closed his eyes. “He is my brother. He is the opposite of me in every way. Where I love Narnia and seek to keep the land pure he does not. He wished to make Narnia his own and use it for nefarious deeds. He is a black lion with his own magic. I image the magic inside him has only managed to grow, along with his hate for me and for Narnia.” He looked up at Lucy with a very serious gaze. “This is why you should be protected. You are a symbol of Narnia’s hope. You are a ruler. You are someone he would attack to get to me.”
“Your...brother?” Lucy was wide eyed. “Oh no. Aslan..”
“I won’t let him hurt Lucy or you.” Tumnus said confidently. This was Lucy and Aslan. He would not let the ones he cared for fall if he could help it. “I swear this.”
“It is good for all of us to be on our guard. I have no idea if he is here or not as of yet. That is why I must go and get information. Promise me to stay safe here, at Cair Paravel. I have asked some of our friends to help guard and protect you for now but soon the time will come that more will be needed.” Aslan nosed against her hand. “Promise me to let them help you Lucy Pevensie.”
“I promise Aslan.” She nodded. “You promise to be careful as well.”
“I will.” He stepped away. “Guard her heart well Mr. Tumnus.”
The noble lion tore away from the steps of Cair Paravel in a full run. Lucy leaned against Tumnus and sighed. This matter was becoming more serious by the moment. The brother of Aslan? She would of never known.
“Stay safe at Cair Paravel.” Tumnus kissed the top of her head lightly. “You..are more important to Narnia now, than you ever have been.”
“Hope.”
“Yes.” He turned her so she faced him. His hand cupped her chin. “Hope and courage.”
“But how can I help fight if I am protected all the time.” Her eyes were fixed on his. “I can’t just let people fight and not do something.”
“You promised Aslan already to let them so you have no choice.” Tumnus smiled and kissed her pouting lips. “You are a lady of honor and of her word.”
“Oh that was a mean trick! How can he expect me to just stand by and not help my friends?”
“Because your friends know full well what they are getting into.” Tumnus stepped away with her hands in his. “Lets go for a walk inside. Maybe to the balcony.”
“You are trying to change the topic Mr. Tumnus.” She was pulled forward by him. “I can’t promise that I won’t help. I only promised to let others help protect me. I never said I would not help them to.”
“I have a feeling Aslan fully expects that from you.”
“He should.” She nodded. “I will die before I see Narnia fall to evil purposes.”
“Again, Spoken like a true queen of Narnia.” The faun grinned. “You can not help your self can you?”
“What do you mean?” She walked up so she was walking beside him. “I can’t help what?”
“You can’t help but be giving, noble and valiant.”
“It...just comes natural I guess.” She smiled at him. “Just like you can’t help being loyal and a charmer.”
“Well It is said that a faun is a teller of tales os they know how to interact with people.” Tumnus chuckled. “They also love their cider and sardines.”
“Well I can think of only one interaction I would like right now with you.” Lucy grinned. “I might tell you too.”
“Oh?” He turned and pulled her close to him so her chest was against his stomach. His hands were upon her back. “I will hold you hostage here until you do tell me.”
“Who sais this isn’t what I wanted to begin with?” She smiled, looking up at him. “Or..maybe there was just one more thing.”
“You are being coy.” He chuckled. “What is that one more thing?”
“This.”
She leaned up on her tip toes and pressed her lips to his softly. Tumnus crooned in delight as he kissed back. His hands casually massaged their way up her back to her shoulder blades. She closed her eyes and let him embrace her fully into his kiss. It was badly needed in her opinion. She needed him to hold her because he was the only person helping to keep her from flooding Cair Paravel with her tears.
