Summary: As Cari's relationship develops with Nathaniel and Jason, a new hate group gives the weres of St. Louis trouble while a figure of recent vampire lore, Fire and Ice visits the city, making a wager between Jason and Asher all the more interesting.
This story, unlike the prequel, is not a PWP... there IS plot. Gasp, I know. I also have some new characters. Please read, review, and enjoy!

Riley was not in the TV mood. She hated TV actually, and she'd just read the last book she'd brought with her. She couldn't sleep, and all she was doing was pacing around the house. She was too anxious to work on the budget, so she finally decided to go for a walk. She'd changed into her favorite dark-green yoga pants and a light-green tank top after her shower, and since there was a little wind out she threw on a very light zip up sweater jacket. Pulling her hair up into a messy bun, she headed for the door. Just as she was about to leave, she remembered something important.
Running back into the bathroom, she put in her contacts that turned for fiery amber eyes to dark brown. Finally, she was ready and she headed out the door. Cari was located within a group of little shops right outside the blood quarter. Because of this fact, the shops were all open 24 hours, so Riley grabbed a coffee at Starbuck's and proceeded to window browse.
Asher strode through the edges of the blood district, biting back a growl. He'd been hunting for the assassin for over an hour, Jean-Claude having gained the help of the wererats in combing the sewers. Thus far, no luck on any front. It was becoming increasingly clear that Fire and Ice had escaped. The question, however, was what the hell was such an assassin doing in St. Louis to start with?
He sighed, shaking his head. Non. Turning another corner, nearing Tailor Made, Asher paused. Non- that couldn't be. "Riley!"
Riley froze. Turning she watched as the vampire walked toward her. "Asher?" Fighting not to rolling her eyes she looked down at the ground and drew a deep breath to calm herself. Great...just what I need.
"Are you insane, Cherie? Have you not watched the news? There was a murder on this night, not an hour and a half ago... The killer has not been caught, and you walk around alone? At this time in the morning?" He shot her a look, shaking his head. "I shall walk you back to Cari's."
"I did hear the news."Riley shot him a look. "I couldn't sleep, and I don't want to go back to Cari's"
"Well, Tis certainly not safe for a young woman such as yourself to be out here alone." He paused. "And why not?"
Rolling her eyes, Riley took a sip of her coffee. "Chivalry went out of style about a century ago. You don't need to protect me."
"Out of style or not, I'm not letting you wander about unescorted." Asher shook his head.
"God! You’re persistent. Did it ever occur to you that maybe I could take care of myself? Or maybe just maybe I wanted to be alone?" Riley was kinda enjoying his presence, which pissed her off all the more, but this whole protective thing would get on her nerves really quick... -Just be rude and he'll go away. Do you really want him to go away? Yes...definitely do. What if he just wants a friend? Kiss on the hand? Cherie'? Ha! Friend my ass!- Riley shook her head to clear her thoughts. "You really don't need to follow me. I'll be fine."
"Perhaps you can, Che- Riley. However, the person who committed the earlier crime was pyrokinetic... thusly..." He shrugged. "And just pretend I am not here, if I bother you so much. You did it well enough in the office, non?"
Stopping Riley just stared at him. "I... You're kinda annoying at times, you know that?" Sighing Riley added, "Fine...I'll try the whole being nice thing, but I'm NOT going back to Cari's... not yet at least."
"Oui. I've heard this many a time of the years..." He paused in walking, waiting for her. "Do you mind me asking why you are so unwilling to return to your friend?"
Pausing she glanced at him, then shrugged. "I'm wide awake and there's nothing interesting to do there. Cari's should be fast asleep by now."
"Ah." He said in a tone that clearly stated he did not believe that was the entire story.
"All right, well, you insist on following me, why do you lead instead. I'm not from around here, so I don't know my way around. So I have to have a chaperone..." She smiled jestingly. "I think you should show me around."
He quirked a brow. "What sort of places do you want to see, Cherie?"
Shrugging she tried to stop from smirking. Jestingly she said, "You're the chaperone...Which places are appropriate?"
A slow grin took over his face. "Let me think..." Asher glanced around the local shops, then nodded. "I know a place that you might like..."
Asher took Riley's hand, ignoring the fact that she was protesting as he began to lead her toward a very special place. "I come here for the books... You, however, might like the coffees, non?"
Riley's eyes widened as she took in the store. It seemed small at first but it housed a ton of books. Walking through a couple isles, she got the impression that they must have a lot of hard to find books. "Wow..." Riley's voice lacked much emphasis until she came to the wall of coffee. She couldn't even help it. There were two things that Riley collected. Porn movies, and coffee...well, the bags, at least. If she bought coffee, she ended up drinking it. She had a large collection of different coffee bags. It drove Edward crazy.
"Why do you keep all of those? " He'd say.
"I only keep the ones to the coffee I liked."
"No, you keep all of them."
Riley shrugged. "I liked all of them."
Now looking at the shelves of exotic coffees, she couldn't help herself. "Awesome." She moved to the first shelf and started looking through the different kinds. "How did you know I would like this? You've only seen me once besides at Tailor Made, and that would be tonight."
"And both times you have had coffee, non? One a Brazilian blend that is hard to find..." Asher smiled, glad that she liked the shop.
"You know... just the fact that you know that is kinda freaky...no offense." Riley quirked a brow, then picked up a bag of Hawaiian grown coffee beans. Hawaii had all the coconut flavored coffee's... plus the bag was kinda pretty. Edward was gonna kill her but she was gonna get it.
Asher quirked a brow. "Why?"
"You don't even drink coffee. Yet you know that it was Brazilian." Riley walked to the register. "Don't get me wrong...I kinda have to give you props for knowing that little information, but...still." She shrugged.
"Anita favors coffee as well..." He shrugged. "After a while, I picked up on the different scents."
Riley frowned slightly. No... he couldn't be talking about... "Anita?"
"Blake, Cherie. The Executioner, if you will. She makes many headlines... Surely you've heard of her?" He quirked a brow.
"Yeah...I've heard of her." The sentence was short and to the point as they left the store. "I just...didn't realize you spent much time with her."
"She is... Jean-Claude's human servant. As his second..." He trailed off.
Waving her hand, Riley turned toward home. "Forget about it. I get the picture. Thanks. Anita has made this city famous but everything I've seen of her she seems like one big fake. If you are an asinine...Why would you want to make it public? Everyone knows she does it, Asher. You'd have to be daft to see the news about that woman and not come to the same conclusion." Riley shrugged. "I'm just glad I don't live here permanently. All the talk about her would drive me crazy. The reason I asked was to make sure that it was the same Anita I've been hearing about since my plane first landed here."
Asher's lips quirked. "Indeed. I must agree." He scowled. "Mon Ami was going to try and see her this evening... Anita, however..."
Riley had once had to do a job with Anita once before. It would never happen again. The damn woman never showed up when she was supposed to and Riley almost got killed. It took every thing she had to keep Edward from going and shooting her. Riley didn't want anyone knowing she was related to him. "Ah...sorry for your friend."
“Let us speak of more pleasant things. So where are you from, Cherie?" He watched her move, his eyes thoughtful.
"Phoenix." Riley was actually enjoying her night with Asher. Wow...it'd been a long time since she'd enjoy any guy’s company...other than Eddy’s.
"Phoenix? Lovely place... over all, too much sun." He smirked at her, waiting for her reaction.
Riley smirked slightly. "I agree, but technically there isn't much difference in the hours of sunlight from here to there...It's just a more dry heat...and if you get outside the city, it's solid desert for miles upon miles.”
"Oui... true." He shook his head. "So how did you meet Cari? You seem as... water and fire, non? Opposites..."
Smiling Riley looked at the ground for a moment caught up in memories. "We met in high school. The first time I had her over to my house for the night, my brother put a snake in the sheet of the bed we had to share." Riley laughed, a soft gentle laugh. "She swore she would never come back ever again... That promise didn't last long. My mother died and she came to live with us and our step father for a week."
"Ah. Je suis desole. Tis never easy when a parent passes." He shook his head. "What about this brother? Is he older?"
"Older, and it doesn't really matter. She was so drunk half of the time that she could barely speak, anyway." Riley could remember her home life growing up well. It sucked to say the least. Her stepfather was rarely ever home and when he was he was so high that he didn't know what was up or down. If he wasn't high, he was meaner than sin. Her mother was a drunken, cheating welfare case and Riley couldn't stand her. She was closest to Cari's parents, but for the most part she and Eddy grew up on their own. It was no wonder that they ended up the way they did.
“...Ah.”
"Yeah... but that was a long time ago. Me and my brother turned out okay I think...Well...I did at least." Riley smirked. "It's nice coming here to visit Cari. Takes my mind off of some things."
"I understand." Asher shook his head. "It seems forever since I've been able to escape, non?" They reached the entrance of Tailor Made, and he paused. "It was nice seeing you, Riley."
"I actually had a half decent time tonight." She smiled warmly. "Thanks."
He bowed slightly. "Bonne Nuit, Cherie."
"Night." Riley got her keys out and unlocked the door. Damn... It was late...early...oh hell it was sleep time.
Turning, Asher disappeared into the night.
