Chapter 6
Darius woke up in the early afternoon with Mia in his arms. He lay there just holding her for minutes. It had been over a thousand years since he awoke with someone next to him. He had many lovers thru his lifetime but never one he longed to linger in bed with. Darius soon tired of one night stands and over the last few centuries only sought someone out when he couldn’t take his celibacy any longer. Darius nuzzled her hair, breathing in her scent. She smelled of jasmine and woman. He caressed her breast rubbing his thumb over the peak and heard her sigh in her sleep.
Mia was having a delicious dream. Darius was caressing her all over and his scent enveloped her. She came awake when he entered her and she moaned his name.
Darius rocked against her slowly. He cherished the feel of her. She brought him such peace. Darius paused at that thought. Mia gave him the peace he had been searching for his whole life. Right after that realization came the knowledge that he loved her. Darius was glad that she was faced away from him so she wouldn’t see the tears in his eyes. He laced his fingers with hers and moved deeper, loving her with his body.
Mia felt the difference in him. He moved against her like he cherished her, maybe even loved her. She squeezed his hand and willed him to feel her love, knowing it wouldn’t do either of them good in voicing their feelings for one another.
They both climaxed at the same time and lay there holding onto another, neither wanting to let go. Finally it was Mia’s stomach that made Darius withdraw and turned Mia to lay on her back so he could look down at her. Caressing her stomach he chuckled, “I think someone’s hungry.”
Mia smiled as she caressed his cheek and said, “Yes, starving. And you?”
Darius looked down at Mia’s breasts and said, “Ravenous.”
Mia laughed, “You are insatiable.”
“Oh, you mean food?” he asked, smiling while he caressed her bottom lip.
“Yes. What would you like? I will go get it,” she offered.
“Surprise me,” he said after giving her a light kiss.
After putting on her robe Mia went to get some food. While she was gone Darius thought of how he was going to be able to stay away from her. He knew that he couldn’t see her without touching her and she deserved someone normal. Besides, he was a knight. It was his duty to fight evil. He was honor bound and had made his decision to devote his life as a Dark Hunter. Some how he was going to have to make sure Mia was safe and not be with her. He had a feeling walking away from her may be the one thing that could very well destroy him.
As she walked into the bedroom Mia said, “Okay we have strawberries, cream cheese, bagels and orange juice.”
“Sounds good,” he said while helping her put the tray onto the bed.
They spent the rest of the afternoon feeding one another and talking about their lives. Mia paused in taking a bite of a strawberry, “You really met William Shakespeare?”
“Yes. That book you were looking at in my library was given to me by Will. One night I was having a busy time with daimons and was caught outside when dawn broke. Will happened by and helped me to find shelter. We soon became good friends and after some time he found out what I was.”
“Oh how I would have loved to meet him.”
Darius smiled at her excitement, “I think he would have liked you.”
They stared at each other for a minute until Darius finally said, “I should be going. I’ve got work to do.”
Looking away she said, “Yes. You can take a shower before you go.”
After Darius closed the bathroom door Mia got up and walked to her dresser. Taking her mother’s necklace out of her jewelry box Mia put it on and looked at herself in the mirror. Mia hadn’t worn it in days. She used to rarely take it off but hadn’t wanted to lose it in her fights with the daimons. The necklace always gave her a feeling of protection and she desperately needed everything she could get to be able to let Darius go without crying and making a fool of herself.
Darius walked out of the bathroom and saw Mia trying to be brave and keep the tears from falling. Walking over to her he turned her around to look down into her eyes. “Mia, I... Today has been so special to me. I will never forget it. Never forget you.”
Mia looked up into his dark eyes. They weren’t blue anymore. The time they had spent together was like a dream and now reality was crashing in. Trying to give him a smile she said, “Darius thank you for everything. I will cherish the time we spent together forever.”
Darius couldn’t help it; he crushed Mia to him and captured her lips, needing to taste her once more. After about a minute, Darius felt something digging into his chest. Pulling back, “What the...”
Darius froze when he saw the necklace that Mia had around her neck. He had seen it before, shortly after he had become a Dark Hunter. But how did Mia get it? “Mia where did you get that necklace?” he asked while running a finger over it.
Frowning at his reaction to it she said, “It was my mothers. Why?”
“Because I have seen it before and the person who had been wearing it at the time,” he said, never taking his eyes off the necklace.
Still puzzled by his reaction she asked, “Who?”
Looking into her eyes he whispered, “Merlin.”
Memories came flooding back. Darius had almost been finished with his training with Acheron when one night Merlin came. Darius hadn’t wanted to see him. But before he could tell Acheron to tell Merlin to leave he watched Ash nod to Merlin and then leave. Darius, not able to look Merlin in the eye, knelt and bowed his head. Darius felt guilty for the lives of the knights who died because of his brother. He should have done something, warned Arthur of his brother’s hatred. He felt Merlin place a hand upon his head.
“My son, you have nothing to feel guilty about. Your brother chose his own path and in doing so has led you on the path you are to walk. You are a knight, bound to fight for justice and truth. The path that lay before you will be hard and long but one day you will be rewarded for your sacrifice.”
Darius looked up at Merlin than stared at the necklace that hung from his neck while Merlin said a prayer for him. He hadn’t seen him since that night but now all that he had said went thru his mind.
Mia was worried. Darius was pale and had a far away look in his eyes. “Darius what’s wrong? How could this necklace be the same one that Merlin had? That would make it over 1500 years old,” she said while grasping his hand.
Coming back to the present he knew that it was the same one. It was like he could sense part of Merlin thru the necklace. Somehow Mia’s mother got it, but why? “Mia, where did your mother get it?”
Darius frowned as she let go of his hand and walked a few feet away from him. He could sense her sadness and something else. “Mia?”
Holding the necklace in her hand she said, “It has been past down from mother to daughter on my mother’s side of the family. The night she died she had given it to me to wear. The night before I had had a nightmare and I was afraid to walk in the dark so she gave it to me because I always got such a feeling of safety while wearing it. She should have been wearing it. If she had she may be alive today.”
Darius turned her to face him and gently wiped the tear form her face. “Mia it wasn’t your fault. Even with this she wouldn’t have survived and you wouldn’t have either. That is why I didn’t sense you that night. The necklace was protecting you.”
“But why would my family have something of Merlin’s? After my mother died I had no known living relatives.”
“I don’t know. I need to go and check on a few things. I want you to wear this whenever you leave the house. And Mia please don’t go out seeking daimons. I know what you were doing and I couldn’t bare it if anything should happen to you,” he said while caressing her cheek.
Mia leaned her face into his hand and said, “Darius I will stay safe.”
Darius knew that was all he was going to get from her so he reverently kissed her and then left.
