The Old Man.
It was a week after their strange encounter on the road to town when Snow White and Rose Red decided to go for a walk into the forest. The night before had brought heavy rain and strong winds. Snow White was carrying a basket with a dress to fix and Rose Red had a cut lunch and a story book in his basket. On the way, they came to a fallen tree, and they saw someone at the other end flailing endlessly. Not knowing what else to do, they went to see what was happening. At the end of the tree was an older man. He had dirty clothes and a very long beard, which had been caught in a wedge in a tree. 'Don't just stare.' yelled the old man when he saw the two approach. 'Help me out of here.' he demanded. Snow White and Rose Red put down their baskets and tried to pull the beard free of the tree. But no matter how hard the three men pulled, the beard would not come loose. 'I will go for help.' Snow White said. 'What good is that?' the man demanded. 'If we can't do it, no amount of men can do it. No do something before I lose my tempter.' he shrieked at the top of his lungs. Shrugging and out of ideas, Snow White took a pair of scissors form his basket and cut the beard at the very base of the tree. 'What did you do that for?' the old man said, in a less than grateful tone. 'I wanted my beard out, not shortened. Be gone you filthy men of ill manor and taste.' But in spite of what he said, the old man took a bag of gold hidden near the tree and ran off into the forest. Unfazed, Snow White and Rose Red headed off into the forest. Snow White looked over his shoulder. 'Loser.' he said quietly. 'Do not say such things.' Rose Red said. 'I do apologize, but I feel he deserved it. What a rude man.' Snow White answered. 'That is all good and well, but you must not say such things.' Rose Red said again. They continued on their way and enjoyed what remained of their afternoon out. The next day, Felicia asked them to go and do some fishing, for their larder was empty of fish. The men took their fishing gear and their baskets and headed down to the stream. When they got there, they saw someone being dragged into the water. Though he grabbed at shrubs and the rushes, he could not save himself. When they got closer, they saw it was the old man. His beard was tangled in his fishing line and a fish was pulling him in. 'Don't just stand there you filthy men, help me!' yelled the old man. Although the three fought with all their might, they could not free the man from the strong pull of the giant fish. So, with nothing else for it, Snow White took the scissors out and snipped the line and another small amount of the man's beard. 'My beard!' the old man shrieked. 'It took me forever to grow that beard, and you have cut away some of the best bit. Good day to you, foulest of beings.' He took a bag of pearls from the rushes and ran off into the forest. Snow White shrugged to Rose Red as they sat down and began to pull out their things for their fishing trip. 'What a terrible man.' Rose Red said. 'We save his life and all we get is a good yelling.' 'I know, but I suppose generosity is its own reward.' Snow White answered. 'Too true.' Rose Red replied. They sat by the stream for most of the day until they had caught a number of fish. They then returned to their home. The following day, the two boys were called to a town to perform. The town was at the far end of a road that past a mountain. As they ventured down the road, there was the old man. He was standing on the top of some rocks, his beard caught in between two of them. 'Well if you have nothing better to do than stand there gawking, help me out.' he screamed at them. Snow White shrugged his shoulders, took the scissors and snipped off another bit of the old man's beard. 'Damn you foolish boys. How dare you cut my beard again? When you get as old as me, you will understand how much a beard means to you.' the old man snapped. He took a box from under a rock and jumped down into a hidden cave. Snow White shook his head and continued on his way, Rose Red following a moment after. After performing in the town and being paid, the two men headed back along the mountain road. At the same place where they had helped the old man before, they found him sitting there looking and examining some precious stones. Rubies, emeralds and sapphires as beautiful as either of the men had seen. 'What are you looking at?' the old man snapped. 'Since I am not tied down by my beard, I am going to teach you two what I should have done the first time we met.' he said. He took a small knife from his belt and pointed it at them. But before he could act, a roar came across the mountain and there stood a black bear, looking down on them. The old man dropped his knife in fear and stepped backwards. 'Please don't eat me Mr.Bear. I am not good for you. I am fat and bone, nothing meaty. Eat these two filthy boys instead. A lot of meat on them, they will fill you right up until next spring.' said the old man. But the bear ignored his pleas. With a mighty slash of his paw, the old man fell to the ground, his head twisted and some traces of blood, and he never moved again. The two men looked at the bear. As they did so, he glowed pure white as his bear skin fell off. There stood the most handsome man either of them had ever seen. 'Thank you Snow White and Rose Red. I was cursed by a witch who gave that old man all my treasure. I had to find it or else remain a bear until my dying day. Thank you for helping me find him.' the man said. 'But who are you?' Snow White asked. 'Snow White and Rose Red, do not beat your lover dead.' The man said, and instantly they knew it was the bear that had stayed with them during the long winter. 'How wonderful it is that you are safe and well.' Rose Red answered, recovering a little more quickly. 'Now let me thank you for helping me break this spell. Come and live with me in the capital. My fine house awaits my return and my treasures to be placed where they belong.' Instantly, they agreed, and went to tell Felicia. The Old Man.
