Chapter Six
When we walked into Carlisle’s office he was just getting off of the phone. Edward led me to a chair before the desk before taking a seat on the edge of the table. Carlisle smiled kindly up at us. I wasn’t sure what to say to him and I was hoping that Edward had some idea.
“What’s up kids?” Carlisle asked looking from Edward to me and back again.
“Bella and I have something to talk to you about. You see, today Bella and Alice went and got a few tests at the store and it seems that Bella is pregnant.” Edward looked at me fidgeting with nervousness and came to stand beside me. He took my hand in his and we both watched the emotions play over Carlisle’s face.
“I do see, and you wish my opinion and guidance?” He asked with a supportive tone. If I hadn’t known him as well I might not have noticed the pleasure that was masked on his face. He was pleased that we brought him this news about the pregnancy.
“Yes, we wanted to know about the risks that might be involved with carrying the baby to term,” Edward said with a nod. His thumb brushed across the top of my knuckles reassuringly.
“As you know,” Carlisle motioned toward Edward, “Vampire related pregnancies are very rare. Tests and theory have proven that a vampire is most fertile after hunting. Many vampire couples have tired to conceive, but the chances are very slim. Upon my own research I’ve seen that there are a few risks involved. During pregnancy women have experienced some problems such as extremely powerful kicks, great amounts of movement, and premature labor. Very few women actually make it to term. Normally women must stay bed ridden for the last trimester to keep from going into premature labor. Aside from that, nothing has happened that is too extreme.” Carlisle explained knowledgeably. I sat and listened very carefully and then another thought popped into my head.
“Carlisle, aside from those problems, are the babies born alright otherwise? Are they born human, with ten fingers and ten toes?”
He laughed at my question and nodded his head, “For the most part the babies have been perfectly healthy and human. However, close monitoring is advised, sometimes for reasons unknown, a baby will pass away in the womb or be stillborn. This has only happened a few times and the possibility of it happening to you is one in a million.”
I looked at Edward worriedly. Knowing my history I knew that if something bad could happen to me it most likely would. I bit my lower lip and thought of something else to ask him, “Will you be my doctor Carlisle?”
For a moment he didn’t say anything at all. Then he cleared his throat, “I don’t think that that would be a problem. I don’t have a few things that I’d need here at the house, but I could check you at the hospital.”
“Carlisle, what about that room in the garage?” Edward inquired quickly.
“Well Edward, I think your room might come in handy.” Carlisle stood and motioned us toward the studies door.
I looked between the two of them not knowing what they were talking about, “What room Edward?”
“Umm…well…” Edward started as if he were unsure of what he should said. Like maybe I would be mad at him after he told me.
“Please tell me,” I pleaded wanting to know what it was that they were talking about. I looked from one to the other and finally Carlisle broke down and told me.
“When we came back from Denali Edward thought that it might be a good idea if we turned our old storage room in the garage into a small medical room. He and Esme laid tile, painted the walls, added counters with a working sink, and a bed for you to sit on. It’s not much. They also bought thousands of dollars worth of medical equipment. He wanted it to be a safe place for you to come to if you got hurt. That way we won’t have a repeat of what happened with Jasper.” Carlisle explained on our trip to the garage. We walked to a door in the garage that I’d never noticed before. He walked in and flipped on the lights.
I followed closely behind him and glanced about the room inquisitively. It had a very soothing effect to it. The white tiles gleamed as if they had just been polished. There was pale blue paint on the walls and midway down them there was a strip of wall paper that had bright stars and moons against a dark blue background. It looked very much like a normal doctor’s office.
“This is amazing, you and Esme did this?” I turned to Edward who stood silently behind me. His face was blank and I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
Slowly he nodded his head, “I told you that Esme likes to do things like this. I just played follow the leader.”
“What else could you need in here Carlisle? It looks like you have anything.” I asked him when he pulled the closet door open. Inside were stacks of gowns, white towels, and miscellaneous stocked up supplies.
“Well if you want me to do proper exams here I’ll need to get ultrasound equipment, petroleum jelly, a Doppler, and a few other things necessary for a pregnant woman’s exam.” He pulled out a gown and handed it to me, “Here, put that on and I’ll step outside. Then we can start the exam.”
Carlisle smiled reassuringly and left Edward and I alone in the makeshift medical room. Edward watched me as I undressed and folded my clothing in only my underwear. His eyes never left me for a second the entire time that it took to put on the hospital gown and climb clumsily onto the bed. The smile that spread across his face made me cross my arms under my chest and lift a quizzical brow.
“What’s so funny?” I asked self-consciously.
“Nothing at all Bella, I just find your actions very adorable.” He motioned a hand toward me, “You’ve got to take off your panties or Carlisle may find it a little tough performing your exam properly.”
Surprise must have shown on my face because he said, “It may be uncomfortable to have Carlisle examine you; but think of it this way, you trust Carlisle and if he doesn’t do it then you’ll have to have somebody else you don’t know do it. He’s seen things like this before love. Carlisle has studied many branches of medicine and that includes obstetrics and gynecology. He was an OB-GYN for quite a few years and has delivered many babies. He knows what he’s doing.”
“Carlisle has delivered babies before?” I questioned. I should have known that he would have done something like that. Vampires strive for perfection, and he wanted to perfect his knowledge of doctoring. Delivering babies was just another stepping stone in the perfection pond.
“Yes, many times before. You should speak with him about it. I don’t know the exact numbers, but I know it was a couple thousand at the least.” Edward explained easily. There was no bragging, he could have been talking about the weather he was so nonchalant. He walked over to me and wrapped an arm around my waist holding me close to him. In one simple movement he lifted my bottom, slid a hand under the gown, and removed my underwear.
He pressed between my legs and leaned down. I gazed into his eyes and forgot all about my discomfort and uneasiness. He brushed his lips against mine and forgot how to breathe. He smiled against my lips and pulled away. I protested softly, “No don’t pull away.”
“Bella, love, I don’t need you fainting on me again. Besides, Carlisle is waiting just outside so that he can begin the exam.” Edward kissed the tip of my nose and went to take a seat on a small cushioned bench beside the counter. I slumped and looked toward the door. He took that as his cue to call for Carlisle, “You may come in now.”
Carlisle stepped into the room with a file attached to a clipboard. I didn’t know where it came from, but it was there and the file snapped onto it said my name across the top. Like as professional he washed his hands in the sink and dried them quickly. Tossing the towel away he sat on the swivel chair that was in the room and turned his attention to me with a handsome smile. There was a pen in his hand and the clipboard was resting on his crossed legs.
“Alright, lets start off with the basic information first. I’ll need to know your medical history. Have you had a chronic illness, a previous major illness or surgery, drug allergies, or general allergies?” Though he sounded very professional he didn’t treat me as if my exam was simply routine.
“No, I haven’t had any of those. The worst illness I’ve had was tonsillitis.” I answered quickly. He nodded his head and jotted something down on the papers within my file. He turned his gaze back to me after a few moments.
“Are you taking any nutritional supplements or medications?”
I thought about it for a moment, “I take a once a day daily vitamin when I remember to take it.” I watched his hand fly across the paper as he jotted down my information.
He looked back up at me with black eyes, “Okay, you’ll have to think about this once. Has anybody in your family had any sort of genetic disorder, chronic disease, or unusual pregnancy outcomes?”
I shook my head quickly, “No, everybody in my family has been pretty healthy. I don’t recall anyone having any of those problems.”
“Good, now can you remember how old you were when you got your first period?”
I felt heat creep into my cheeks and I glanced shyly at Edward. He hadn’t reacted to the question at all. “I was ten when I had my very first period.”
“Can you tell me how long your periods last? Are they regular?” Carlisle saw the blush of my embarrassment and smiled reassuringly, “I know this is embarrassing, but it’s perfectly normal and it happens to every woman.”
My gaze drifted from Edward to Carlisle. My eyes were a little wide and my cheeks still burned, “They normally last anywhere from six to eight days. Usually they start about the same time, anywhere from the eighth to tenth of each month.”
He nodded and marked a few things down again. He read the next section of questions and sighed, “I know these are silly questions, but I have to ask just in case. It’s normal procedure. Have you been impregnated before or had either an abortion or miscarriage?”
“Of course I haven’t Carlisle!” I looked at him incredulously.
“I know, I told you that it was silly. But, I had to ask or I wouldn’t be doing my job properly. I already know that you eat healthy. You don’t smoke or drink and I know you don’t do drugs. I already know Edward’s history. Now all I’ll need to know is this, what was the first day of your last menstruation?” He had one brow arched as he looked at me. I swallowed and thought about it for a few moments.
“If I remember correctly, the first day of my last period was July tenth.” I said quietly. I looked down at my bare feet and wiggled my toes together. Alice had painted my toes a pale pink earlier that morning. She’d wanted to paint them a bright red to test colors for the wedding day, but I had put a stop to that.
Carlisle thought about it and calculated the months. Edward watched me fidget on the table and I anxiously swung my legs around. When had I become so impatient? Carlisle cleared his throat and looked at the both of us.
“Alright, by my calculations I would say that Bella conceived right around July twenty fourth. Her estimated due date is April sixteenth.” Edward looked over at me and smiled warmly. He’d been extremely good about this so far.
“So, I’m four weeks pregnant? I’ve been pregnant for a month and I didn’t even know it?” I stared at him is disbelief.
“Technically yes, but you have to consider that one of those week was your menstrual cycle, and then through the next week you’re body was preparing all over again for a pregnancy. Then you conceived, so technically your embryo is only two weeks old. But together it is four. It’s pretty confusing stuff. So now all I have to do is the physical part of your exam.” He handed my file to Edward and slipped on a pair of white gloves. “Edward, you write down the information I give you.”
I sat very still while he took my blood pressure and checked my heart rate. He spouted off stats that I didn’t understand and then he looked over my body very carefully for varicose veins and edema. Clearing me of both he checked my lungs, breasts, and abdomen. Clearly embarrassed of the exam, I started to slide off of the table thinking that it was over. But, he simply sat in front of me on his chair and pulled stirrups out of the bottom of the bed.
“Alright, I’m going to do the vaginal exam now.” I turned three shades of red and glanced at Edward. He gave me a crooked smile and an encouraging nod. “You’ll need to slide down on the bed and put your feet in the stirrups. I’ll be checking your external genitalia, your vagina, and your cervix. After that’s over I’ll check your pelvic organs and your pelvis. This might be a little uncomfortable and for that I’m sorry.” I did as I was instructed and slide my bottom down to the edge of the bed. I put one foot in each stirrup and then I felt his gloved hand examine parts of me that was supposed to be private. Edward watched what he was doing very carefully. The only comfort I had was the fact that he was there and that I knew Carlisle. I didn’t think I could take it if a stranger was down there.
The exam didn’t take very long at all and though it was uncomfortable I didn’t complain. He pulled his hand away and took off his gloves. Tossing them away he washed his hands again and turned back to face both of us. When he didn’t speak right away I asked, “Is everything alright?”
“Oh, everything’s fine. From the examination of your uterus and cervix I would say that you are, in fact, about one month pregnant. I’m just surprised that somebody from our family has been able to reproduce. I wouldn’t have thought it possible, it is truly amazing.” Carlisle murmured. He looked genuinely surprised and very pleased about the situation. “Do you have any questions? Is there anything you want to know?”
“When will I be able to change?” I looked at him with a brow raised.
He was quiet for a while and I was worried that he wouldn’t answer my question. But he finally sighed and said, “I’m not sure changing will be a good idea while you’re pregnant. It’s never been done before, and I honestly cannot tell you what the outcome will be. I would think it would be best for you to change after the baby is born.”
“Will the change make breastfeeding impossible?” Edward asked. I hadn’t even thought about breastfeeding!
“I don’t think so. Vampire mothers are able to breastfeed so I don’t think that it would cause a problem for her.” Carlisle assured me.
I considered the other questions that were running through my head. There were so many! “How big is the baby right now?”
“Technically, the baby is called an embryo. Right now, the embryo is smaller then a single grain of rice.” Carlisle answered. I nodded my head and tried to picture a miniature baby. I couldn’t, what would it look like? As if he read my mind he said, “The embryo doesn’t look like a baby yet. It’s sort of tadpole-like. It’s already got a head, with a mouth, a primitive heart that has begun to pump, and a rudimentary brain.”
Again I tried to picture it and I couldn’t. I stayed quiet for a few minutes and then something else came to mind, “What sort of things can I expect to feel and go through?”
“Some women feel nausea or morning sickness, some experience frequent urination, tingling or sensitive breasts, fatigue, pressure in the abdomen, instability, and an assortment of emotions. It all just depends really. All women have different pregnancies, and they don’t always have the same symptoms.” Great, I was not only going to get fat I was going to probably throw up, get sensitive breasts, and have to pee a lot. I sighed heavily and look at Edward who had walked over placed a hand on my back. He looked at me seriously as if he was trying to assess my mood. I smiled weakly and leaned my head against his chest.
“Should I keep taking my daily vitamin or is it dangerous to do that?” I asked. Edwards hand moved up and down my back causing me to relax against him.
“No, you’ll need to start taking a prenatal vitamin every day. Daily vitamins just don’t cut it. You need more supplements than the daily vitamin can give you. You can buy prenatal vitamins at just about any store that sells things like vitamins.”
I nodded and thought about something else, “Carlisle, I know that I’m going to be gaining weight, but how much weight will I gain? Am I going to blow up like a cow with big boobs and a fat face?” I felt Edward’s chest rumble with laughter and I jabbed him with an elbow.
“Gaining weight during pregnancy is definitely going to happen. There’s no way around it. You won’t look like a cow either. You’ll look like you’re bringing a child into this world. The normal weight gain is anywhere from twenty-five to thirty-five pounds. However, because you are so small and don’t have very much fat on your body, you might gain a little extra. It’s important to have the extra fat stores because it helps nourish the fetus before birth, and helps nourish the baby through breastfeeding after birth. Most of the weight can be shed with a little exercise, and if you eat healthy and avoid lots of junk food you won’t gain an excess of extra weight.”
“Oh, alright, I was just curious about it.” I stammered. I was going to probably weigh forty to fifty pounds more by the time my pregnancy was over. Ugh!
“I’ll go into the house and let you get dressed. I’m sure you two have quite a bit to talk about. If you have any questions let me know. I’m always there for you if you every need me Bella.” Carlisle ducked out of the room and left Edward and I alone again.
Edward hugged me against him and kissed the top of my head. I drew away from him and allowed him to move in front of me. He had a look of speculation on his face as if I was keeping something from him. In truth, I wasn’t sure how I felt about being pregnant. I wasn’t sure that I was ready to be a mother to an innocent child. I knew nothing about being a parent and neither did Edward. No matter how much he tried to comfort me I knew that we were both lost in this matter. Was I going to be a good mother for this baby? Or was I going to flop and be one of those mothers that children wished they didn’t have. I knew Edward would be perfect at parenting. He’s always amazing at everything he puts himself up to. He is the sort of person that other people loath because they do everything properly the first time around, no mistakes.
He lifted my chin and looked down into my eyes. I was almost positive that I was wearing my emotions on my face because his eyes darkened and his face hardened. I blinked up at him with all of my uncertainty and negative thoughts and he stared down into my face expressionless.
“Bella, tell me what you’re thinking.” He didn’t ask what was wrong or if I would tell him what was wrong. He simply told me to tell him and I felt my heart sink. He was always so protective and I knew he wouldn’t rest until he knew exactly what was wrong. The only problem was that I didn’t want to tell him I was scared and uncertain. Then he would hold himself responsible for what was happening.
Swallowing hard I pulled my chin from his fingers and glanced down. What could I say that wouldn’t hurt him in some way? What could I possibly tell him that wouldn’t turn him away? Sighing I turned those thoughts aside and settled for the truth. If he took it personally I’d just have to deal with it when it came to that, “I just don’t know how I feel about having a baby yet. I’m not sure I’ll be a good parent, and I’m not sure that I’ll be able to do it. I don’t want to have a baby and fail at being a parent. All children deserve to have good parents. What if I just can’t?”
He lifted my chin again and placed a soft kiss on either cheek, “You are one of the most passionate people I know. If you put yourself into doing something you always try your hardest no matter what it is. If you’re simply scared of being a bad mother you have nothing to fear love. But if you truly don’t want to go through with this you don’t have to.”
“I wish you’d stop suggesting that I have an abortion. I told you, I’m not like that.” I glared at him angrily. How could he keep suggesting that I do something like that? I wasn’t that sort of person and I wouldn’t take the easy way out just because I was scared. It was out of the question.
“There are other ways Bella. You could give the child up for adoption.”
“I really don’t think I could do that. After carrying the baby to term I wouldn’t be able to just give it away. Even if the baby were to go to a loving home, I don’t think I could handle that.” I slid down off of the bed and paced over to my clothing. I slowly got dressed and set the gown into a dirty laundry hamper that was in corner of the room.
Edward stood where he was watching every movement that I was making. I turned on him and crossed my arms over my chest. I needed some time to think about what was going on. I had to come to terms with becoming a mom and I needed to think of a way to talk to Charlie and Renee about it. What the hell were they going to say?
“Bella,” he called my name quietly. I couldn’t take this out on him. He hadn’t done anything to me except be supportive. I just needed to realize that things were going to be alright. I sighed and a put on my best smile. He held his arms open and I walked into them willingly. “Bella, what’s wrong?”
“I just need some time to get used to this. I didn’t plan on having children. I knew with you I wouldn’t be able to. This was so unplanned, and I know you’ll promise me that everything will be alright. I know you’ll comfort me and try to make things seem perfect. I just need some time to come to terms with this on my own. I think I need to go home and be alone for awhile.” He stiffened against me and I knew he was worried, but I couldn’t comfort him in this. There was nothing I could say that would fix it. I needed some time and he’d have to accept that.
“Do you want me to take you home?” He asked quietly.
“No, I’ll go on my own. I promise it will be alright. I just need some time. Will I see you tonight?” I questioned softly. My cheek was pressed against his chest and I couldn’t see the look on his face.
He was quiet for a while and then I felt his hand come up and stroke my hair softly. His pressed his lips to the top of my head, “I’ll be there if you want me to be.”
“Of course I want you to be there. I don’t think I’d be able to sleep without you being there.”
“I’ll be there.” He assured me. I pulled away from him and we walked hand in hand into the house. The family was sitting around the living room when we walked in. They looked toward us and I saw their faces light up.
I stopped, wide eyed because of their expressions, and whispered, “I think Carlisle and Alice told them.”
“Yes, it would seem so.” He murmured staring at his family.
Everybody stood and then something happened that I hadn’t expected. Edward’s siblings stood in the formation of how they had come into the family. Rosalie stood closest, behind her was Emmett who wore a silly grin, then came Alice and Jasper. Esme walked forward and bowed her head to me slightly. I wasn’t sure what was happening, but it seemed as if it were some sort of ritual. She lifted her head and held a hand out to me. Unsure of what was going to happen I placed my palm against hers and she lifted it to her lips and pressed them lightly to my knuckles.
“Miraculous things seem to happen when you’re involved. It is truthfully a wonderful gift that you are bringing a new life into our family. We are very grateful to have you as part of our family, now and forever. Thank you.” Esme spoke lovingly. She let my hand go and wrapped me into a tight hug before stepping away from me and letting Carlisle take her place.
He beamed at me and bowed his head as well, “Thank you for all you have given us. You’ve brought happiness into our family many times over. We’re very glad to have you come into our lives.”
“Thank you,” I said weakly. What was going on? Why were they treating me like I was some sort of goddess or something?
Both of them stepped back and allowed the others to approach. The walked up in the order that they were standing. Rosalie came at me first.
She paused before me and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next. Was she going to be bitter because of her past? She didn’t look upset though, “You’ve given both Emmett and I hope for our own future as parents. We had both given up on having a family because of the rarity of pregnancies. Knowing that you and Edward have done the impossible makes us both think that there might be hope. I’ve never been an aunt and I look forward to experiencing that.”
I was shocked by her words. Normally she was standoffish and she didn’t really talk to me. She wasn’t uncivilized to me at all. She just didn’t bother having deep conversations with me. Knowing that she was glad that I was going to have a baby made my heart pitter-patter unevenly. Rosalie wasn’t jealous, she was hopeful and it was thanks to me and Edward that she was.
“Thank you Rosalie.”
Emmett came up to me next. He looked down at me as if he couldn’t believe I was standing there. The little boyish grin was still in place, but I had never seen him look so grown-up and serious. Well, except for the two times that my life was in danger thanks to James and Victoria. His big arms wrapped around me very carefully and he rested his chin on my shoulder. I put my own arms around him and returned his loving hug.
“You’ve no idea how big this is to us. Knowing that you’re going to have a baby is just amazing. I hope I’m a good uncle.”
“You’ll be a perfect uncle Emmett.” I patted his back and he kissed my forehead.
Alice bounced up to me like the burning ball of energy she always was. She kissed my cheeks like a big sister would have done and held me at arms length. “Do you understand what this means? We get to go shopping for the baby, you’ll need maternity clothes, and I get to have a little niece or nephew to play with. Thank you sister.”
Being called sister was a shock. Unexpectedly my eyes filled with tears and I grabbed her for a tight hug. “Alice you’re so wonderful to me, but no going overboard with this shopping business.” I said sniffling.
“Of course not.” She said and stepped aside. Jasper came up to me cautiously. I knew he was assessing my emotions. I tried to radiate my happiness, but I knew he knew better than that.
He pulled me unto a hug, which shocked me. Because normally he didn’t like getting too close, and whispered beside my ear, “I know that you’re troubled and you’re scared. You don’t have to be. We’re all here to help you out and you just need to enjoy being pregnant. This sort of thing never happens with our kind and that you’re carrying one of our children is amazing. We’re here for you.”
I nodded my head and kissed his cheek, “Thank you Jasper, I’ll keep that in mind.” He let me go and all of them were look at me as if I were the most beautiful thing they had ever seen. I blushed and looked up at Edward, “I’m going to get going. Will you walk me out?”
“Yes, let’s go.” He put and arm around me and led us away from his family. I said thank you again and waved good-bye before he walked us out of the door. He walked me to my truck and opened the door for me. “If you need me before tonight call me on this. It’s yours. I bought it for you’re a while ago, I just forgot to give it too you,” he said handing me a cell phone.
“Thanks Edward, I love you.” I leaned out of the door and kissed him lightly on the lips.
“I love you too. Drive safely please.” He said. I nodded and he closed the door for me. I turned the engine over and he cringed. Sighing I drove down the drive and before I rounded the first corner I saw that he was still standing where I had left him in the rain.
