She paused outside the door, trying to calm her rapid heart beat. Glaring at the men that glanced at her with fear in their eyes, she marched towards the front of the ship, grabbing her hat off the floor where it had landed earlier and shoving it on her head.
She sat heavily on a stack of boxes and pulled her knees to her chest, glowering at the ocean. She continued to sulk as the rising sun caused sweat to run down her back, only to be cooled by the wind that whipped her shirt. She had just started to doze when she heard someone clear their throat behind her.
Turning and peering up from her hat brim, she saw Smee standing with a pile of clothing.
‘Are ye alright, Miss Laura?’ he asked hesitantly.
She gave him a weary smile. ‘I am, thanks,’ she said. ‘More clothes?’ she asked, gesturing to the pile of rags in his arms.
He shifted uncomfortably. ‘Not exactly, miss,’ he said, looking anywhere but her eyes. ‘Cap’n says yer to mend these clothes by night fall.’
Laura snorted. ‘Prick,’ she said, and smiled a little at Smee’s horrified expression. ‘Hope you brought a needle and thread,’ she finished.
Smee took a moment to recover. ‘Aye, missy,’ he said, holding out a large needle and a tangled bundle of thick thread to her.
She sighed and rolled her eyes. ‘Whatever,’ she said. ‘Just leave them.’
Smee laid the clothes on the deck at her feet. He smiled apologetically, and quickly left her.
She shook her head, looking at the pile of rags. ‘Like fucking Milisande and the golden fleece,’ she said bitterly as she started untangling the thread.
‘Mr. Church!’ Laura looked up as Hook stormed out of his cabin. Rolling her eyes, she went back to the mess of thread, even though he came to stop feet away from her.
She did notice that Church had come into sight as well, but kept her head resolutely down.
‘And where is your teaching assistant, Mr. Church?’ Hook said, his voice smooth and polite.
‘Here, sir.’ Laura looked up long enough to throw Diego a glare before returning to her work.
Without a word, Hook pulled his revolver out and shot him through the heart.
‘Jesus!’ Laura cried and jumped up. She returned Hook’s annoyed glance with her own horrified look. She looked down at Diego’s lifeless form, feeling sick at the sight of the small line of smoke rising from the darkening wound.
Casually reloading his gun, Hook turned to Church. ‘I believe I recently gave an order that our new crew member was not to be harassed in any way. Am I mistaken, Mr. Church?’
Laura felt her stomach drop. Did he just kill a man because of her?
‘No sir,’ Church replied, gazing steadily at the captain without fear.
‘And did you know that your former assistant was going to behave as he did?’
‘I knew only that he would challenge her, sir,’ Church said evenly.
‘Ah,’ Hook said, and raised his pistol again.
‘No!’ Laura cried, flinging herself between the two men.
Hook narrowed his gaze at her, but didn’t lower the gun. Oh, shit, she thought, he’s going to shoot me.
‘Is there something you’d like to add, crewman Laura?’ he asked, emphasizing her status.
‘You can’t shoot him,’ she said, fighting back the fear of staring down the barrel of his revolver.
‘You seem to be quite fond of telling me what I can and cannot do,’ Hook said, smirking.
She looked stunned for a moment. Surely he wasn’t going to shoot a man just to make some kind of point?
Shaking her head, she said, ‘But he didn’t do anything wrong. He was trying to teach me.’
‘And what have you learned?’ Hook asked. Blazing green eyes met icy blue for a long moment before she answered.
‘All’s fair in love and war,’ she said, smiling a little as she studied his face.
He regarded her a moment more through narrow eyes before replacing the revolver to his belt.
‘A valuable lesson indeed,’ he said, before turning and striding back the cabin, slamming the door behind him.
Laura slumped her shoulders and ran a shaky hand through her hair. She jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning, she found Church looking at her with a passive expression.
‘I believe you just saved my life,’ he said.
‘Yeah, well, chalk it up to being stupidly impulsive,’ she said, sitting again to relieve her quivering legs and picking up the bundle of thread.
She was surprised when he sat across from her. ‘I did not mean for things to go so far,’ he said, and she was struck by his sincerity.
‘I know,’ she replied. ‘But I’m okay.’ She glanced over as two men came over to drag away the body, and quickly looked away. ‘I’m sorry about your friend.’
Church shook his head dismissively. ‘He was not a friend.’
They sat in silence for a moment, she working at the task of straightening the thread, he contemplating the sea. Both ignored the splash that came moments later.
She looked up, and gave him a quizzical look. ‘What did you mean when you said you knew he would challenge me?’
He shifted his dark gaze back to her. ‘Diego knew how to push people,’ he said. ‘He played on their emotions, threw them off balance.’
‘So you wanted to see if I could keep cool, calm and collected, huh?’ she said with a wry smile. ‘You could have just asked and I would have told you no.’
‘But would you have told me that you would resort to any measure when backed into a corner?’ he asked. ‘Because you showed that you will fight to survive.’ He gave her a knowing smile. ‘That you will fight dirty to survive.’
‘Does that mean you’ll be my Yoda?’ she asked.
Church looked confused. ‘I don’t understand.’
‘You’ll still teach me?’ she asked, realizing her pop culture knowledge really was useless now.
He nodded. ‘You have potential, so I will teach,’ he stood, shaking a finger in her face playfully. ‘But you must be willing to be taught.’
‘Hey, I did excellent in school,’ she said, giving him her most willing smile. ‘Always the teacher’s pet.’
‘We’ll see,’ he said, walking away.
Laura’s smile slipped when she saw that the captain had been watching the exchange from the doorway of his cabin. She jerked her head back down, returning to her bundle of thread.
