Chapter 6
The girls finished their shopping in a couple more hours and headed back to the house to get Alice’s room set up so that she would be comfortable. When they walked into the house the most wonderful smell was emanating from the kitchen. Alice’s stomach growled in response. Rosalie laughed and Alice blushed.
“Looks like we aren’t feeding our pet human enough.” She said with a grin. Jasper was there in a flash.
“She’s not a pet, Rose.” He said angrily. Alice touched his arm gently.
“She didn’t mean it badly, Jasper. She was just teasing me.” She felt his muscles relax the moment she touched him. This; right here; this was where she belonged.
“I made you spaghetti.” He told her softly. “I didn’t know what you liked.” He felt her happiness and smiled.
“Spaghetti is perfect.” She answered. They couldn’t look away from each other. Without even realizing it, they were holding hands.
“We’ll go get your room all ready while you eat, Alice.” Esme told her and everyone silently left the room.
Jasper sat silently watching her eat. He could watch her forever doing the simplest things and be completely happy. Alice tried not to look at him too much while she ate. If she looked at him, she choked on her food. He was so beautiful. His eyes were a golden color now and so wide. She could lose herself in that gaze.
She remembered again the vision she’d had of the two of them twinned together. At the time she’d had it; she couldn’t imagine it happening, but that was before they had touched. That shock she had gotten opened her eyes up to the possibility…no the probability that it would happen. It was just a matter of when and judging by the way things were progressing between them, she didn’t think it would take long. She hoped it would be much more pleasant than the orderly at the asylum. She had heard of people having a pleasurable time together but in her experience it was always painful and humiliating.
She couldn’t see Jasper being like that with her but she had no other experience with men to judge by. Maybe she could talk to Esme about it. The older woman would know. But alerting anyone to the repeated rapes was not something she looked forward to. Bruce, the orderly, always told her that he was trying to get her to respond to people without blacking out. Blacking out was what he called the times she went into her visions. He had told her it was part of her treatment. He would put on her restraints and tell her how pitiful and ugly she was before he would use her. She was afraid of being with any man in that way. It hurt and she was afraid that they would hate it and her for it. Bruce always told her she was horrible at it.
Jasper felt her fear and knew the cause of it. “You are beautiful and worthy, Alice. The people who have made you feel otherwise were just scared of you. Relationships between men and women are not usually what you have experienced. It can be pleasurable for both. But I won’t force you. I will never force you to do something you don’t want to do. If it doesn’t feel good or right we will stop. When you are ready and when it is the right time, I will make sure you enjoy it. For now, I just want to be with you. I want to be close to you and I want to show you the good things life has to offer. Don’t ever feel like you are unworthy. You aren’t.”
Alice’s eyes teared up and her throat closed. This handsome man wanted to make her happy? He wanted to be with her? She didn’t understand why but she knew that that was what she wanted as well. Just to be with him was enough. It was more than she ever could have hoped. She smiled at him and stood up with her bowl taking it to the sink and washing it. When she turned back, he was right behind her. He gathered her gently into his arms and hugged her.
“It has been a traumatic week for you. Let’s get you settled into bed and let you sleep. We will have plenty of time together.” She nodded against his neck and he sighed softly. Being this close to her was both pleasure and pain. He could hear the blood moving through her veins and after close to a century of feeding from humans it was hard to deny but at the same time he didn’t want to do anything to hurt this amazing creature in his arms. He let go of her and took her hand to lead her up to her room.
The others had gotten the bed put together and made for her. Her clothes were all hanging in the closet and there were bookshelves along the wall. They were devoid of books at the moment with no one having any idea what kind of books she would like but they had placed one thing on the shelf for her. A framed picture of the family sat there. She picked it up gently and smiled at the images of her new family. Carlisle looked happy and proud, Esme sweet and kind, Rosalie beautiful and sure, Emmett big and fierce, Edward brooding and thoughtful, and lastly Jasper. Jasper looked lonely in the picture even though he was laughing at something. “We will have to take one with the whole family now.” Jasper said and she smiled. She replaced the picture on the shelf and looked around some more. There was a stereo in the corner and a tv with a dvd player by the windows.
The others came into her room and watched her looking around. She had tears in her eyes. “This is more than I ever could have hoped for.” She said happily.
“You are a Cullen now.” Esme said simply. “Tomorrow we will have you kids registered in school and you can get acclimated. If there is anything at all that you need, Alice, do not hesitate to ask. I hope you will think of me as your mother. I would be proud to call you my daughter.” She moved closer and hugged the tiny girl. “You have been through so much but all that is behind you now, there is nothing but happiness ahead. Enjoy it.”
“Thank you, Esme.”
“You are a Cullen now.” Carlisle said. “We will do everything we can to make the transition easier for you.”
“Welcome to the family, sister.” Rosalie added.
“We will protect you no matter what. You ever need anything you call for your big brother Emmett. I’ll be there in a flash.” Emmett said and Alice laughed as he rippled his muscles.
“Welcome, sister. We are happy you are here.” Edward told her squeezing her hand lightly.
Jasper stepped forward. “I’m right next door if you need anything. The slightest sound I will hear. I will protect you.” He said softly as the others headed out.
“I know you will.” Alice said. Touching his face gently she hoped she wouldn’t wake up back in the asylum. This was all just too good to be true.
“This isn’t a dream Alice. We will be here when you wake up.”
“For a guy who doesn’t read thoughts you know an awful lot about what I’m thinking.” She answered wryly.
“Just reading the emotions.” He said with a smile. “But it’s good to know I’m right.”
“Good night, Jasper.”
“Good night, Alice.”
Surprisingly Alice fell asleep quickly.
