ONE MONTH LATER
***************************
I paced impatiently as Carlisle watched the blood sample under the microscope. This was the third sample he had asked for from Sadie and I was beginning to get worried.
“Well? What have you found?” I asked, finally unable to stand the silence any more.
He merely sat still, not regarding me. I truly hated when he did that.
It seemed just as my patience would snap, he answered.
“Her blood is definitely altered. I have administered several different strains of viruses to it and after a short amount of time the virus is gone completely. How are her scars?”
“Her scars seem to be disappearing slowly, but there are other things that happen also.”
With this said Carlisle at last turned to regard me. A look of curiosity was painted on his face.
“Well, it seems that she can amplify emotions in people. It has happened a few times like when she is angry or very… excited.” If I could have my cheeks probably would’ve been stained red. I could recall several instances where she sent my feelings thundering through the room, most were when we were in bed. However there was one particular instance when he had a heated argument. She was bound and determined to do something, I couldn‘t recall what it was now, but at the time I knew it was not a smart choice. Unfortunately for me she was very stubborn, and she fought me the entire way. While I was extremely frustrated at her insistence, I was also painful aroused. The sight of my sweet little Sadie being so bold and determined and unafraid was a turn on. As things finally escalated enough for me to wrap my arms around her waist and pull her back inside, I felt something push roughly against me and shove my passions out of my body throughout the house. Before I could fully comprehend what happened, there was a loud scream from Alice.
I didn’t even let Sadie go+ as I practically carried her up the stairs. We were both alarmed, Sadie especially. We found Alice laying on the floor of our room, panting. Her hair was a mess and her body was completely sprawled out. After a few deep breaths, that she didn’t need, she sat up with the most languid of ease. She looked like her entire body was made of liquid. The glow of her eyes was intense. I don’t think I had ever seen that look on her face. It was raw and uncontrolled, completely animalistic. To say the least, the three of us had a very pleasant afternoon.
That was the moment I knew there was something odd about Sadie. Not odd in a bad way, just something that was not entirely human. Now here I stood, trying to figure out what that difference was.
Carlisle said nothing, but merely sat in thought.
“We also think she can block Alice’s visions. Alice never has visions of Sadie, but sometimes will see her dreams. We do not fully understand that though. Again, it only seems to happen at times of intense emotion.” I truly hated silence.
“Well Jasper, for now I would just keep monitoring it. Perhaps we can ask Edward and Bella to try things with her and see what she will do with each of them. Then maybe we can get an idea of what she can do. Tell me, have you fed from her?”
“No, why?”
“Just wondering what your venom would do. Has she fed from you?”
Now that was an odd question. Human’s never fed from a vampire. Now he was making no sense at all.
“Why on earth would she feed from us?” The question was ridiculous and I had wondered if Carlisle was losing it.
But he never gave me a chance to question him before he was up and by my side.
“No worries Jasper, we will figure this out. Now come, Esme and Bella have put on a birthday party for your Sadie and we don’t want to be late.”
I allowed him to walk me out of the hospital and once behind the building we took off into the woods. It was a dark rainy evening as we ran to the main Cullen household. I continued to stew over Carlisle’s comment but as the house grew nearer, I pushed it to the back of my mind.
Tonight was for Sadie. There would be time to address my concerns at another time.
We arrived just as the rain began to come down harder. Walking into the home I saw everyone hiding in various places and quickly took my place. I could hear Alice walking to the house and the sound of Sadie’s soft laugh filled my ears. A smile came over me as I took my place next to Edward and waited.
****************************
I could hardly wait to see Sadie’s face. It was her 19th birthday and Esme and Bella had planned all day for her party. I practically was floating up the walkway to the door, overly excited for something that wasn’t even for me. I had told her we were coming for a formal family function, which wasn’t out of the ordinary, so she accepted this explanation easily.
“Alice…” Sadie’s quiet voice hit my ears. I had been talking the whole time and she had been laughing at my jokes and comments, but suddenly I felt the distance from her. I stopped right under the porch light and turned to regard her. She was standing a good distance from me in the darkness of the evening with the rain pouring down around her. I could see the whites of her knuckles as she clenched the umbrella in her hands. I could smell the fear from her.
I was hoping this wouldn’t happen tonight, but it didn’t surprise me that it did. Sadie always felt extreme anxiety when she had to be around the entire family. They all accepted her without question, but she felt as though she were some burden and an intruder for coming into Jasper’s and my relationship.
Jasper and I knew the family didn’t fully understand what events brought us all together, but they never questioned the situation either. If anything they showered Sadie with as much attention and affection as they could because there was only so much she would allow. Jasper and I both knew it would take time for her to open herself to the family, but during our last family meeting we knew it would be sooner rather than later, whether she wanted it or not.
The meeting had occurred at our home, since Sadie was there and slept late at night we had begun to hold the meetings under our roof in order to be there always in case she woke up. Both Jasper and I knew Sadie’s birthday was coming up, but we didn’t think bringing it up to the others would be the best course of action. I was apprehensive about who would be the one to ask about the birthday, my first thought was Bella or Esme. I was quite wrong. Actually, the one to ask about Sadie’s birthday had been Edward. He had mentioned that Bella had been talking about her being here a little over a year and that her birthday was coming up. Without really considering it, he had nonchalantly mentioned throwing her a family birthday party. Jasper and I had planned a quiet evening at home… but with the look on Bella, Esme’s and even Rosalie’s face….. I realized that was not a possibility anymore.
I didn’t even have a say in the party either, they began planning without me and told me to have her there at 7:00 sharp. They all knew if I had any say, I may back her out in case I felt she would be uncomfortable. That never happened. And now here we were. The rain pouring down and my sweet Sadie looking more terrified than I had ever seen her.
Calmly I walked to her and pulled her under the porch with me. I took the umbrella from her stiff hands and set it next to the door. Slowly I leaned into her and placed a gentle kiss against her warm lips, feeling her fear dissipate as I wrapped my arms around her waist. “Everything will be just fine,” I murmured against her mouth as she brought her lips to mine once more. Pulling away, which was no easy task, I opened the door to the house. We walked across the threshold and came to stand in the family room.
I could swear her heart stopped beating as she noticed it was completely empty……..
***************************************
I could smell her fear as she stopped in the doorway to the family area. I could hear the click of Alice’s small heels as she walked further into the room. My hiding place was behind a set of drapes hanging over the large living room window. I turned to regard Edward who stood at the other. He was in her mind, and a small smile came to his face, a sad look in his honey eyes. He could hear all of those thoughts racing through her head. At that moment I was relieved I couldn’t read her mind because I probably would have run to her and held her tight, attempting to soothe her fears. I was too protective and I knew it. My anxiety began to spike, but a slight nod was what he gave me for reassurance. I knew he would do everything he could tonight to make her feel a part of this family, and I knew the rest of the family would also.
Relief came to me and I turned my attention back to the task at hand. I was silently waiting for Alice’s cue. We all were. Esme was perched in front of me behind a large chair. Carlisle was on the same side as Edward and he was crouched behind the overstuffed white couch with Bella. Rosalie and Emmett hid behind Sadie and Alice. Emmett behind the screen that was full of family pictures from over the ages and Rosalie against the fire place. Then we all heard it…
“Well that’s odd… I wonder where everyone could be…….” Alice said, and without waiting any further we all jumped from our places……..
“SURPRISE!!!” we all screamed, jumping from our various hiding places. I watched her jump as she felt Emmett and Rosalie come from behind her. They were all smiles as they pulled her into a gentle hug, whispering happy birthday into her ear. My biggest concern for acceptance came from Rosalie. However she seemed to be the one who wanted most to protect her next to Alice and myself. Perhaps it was the hardships Sadie endured, and it reminded her of her own. One thing I knew, I could count on Rosalie to protect her if ever I needed someone to.
Next Carlisle approached her, placing a fatherly kiss on her cheek wishing her the same sentiment. Edward followed our adoptive father’s example and kissed the opposite cheek, pulling her into his embrace. His words were different and I saw a smile grace Sadie’s face.
Bella and Esme swarmed her next. They merely fawned over her. Wishing her a happy birthday and speaking with her pleasantly about how wonderful she looked.
Wonderful was not the word. I felt Alice come next to me and rest her head on my shoulder. The feeling I was getting from her was similar to my own. Sadie was truly lovely this evening. She wore a blood red dress, her favorite color, though she often shied away from it. She was a quiet and shy young woman, even though she wanted to come out of her shell. This dress was definitely a good start. She stood out boldly, and beautifully. The dress was long sleeved and off the shoulder. It flowed to slightly below her knees and a ribbon was tied under her full breasts accenting her curves wonderfully. It was the softest silk and complemented her skin in the finest of ways. Her hair hung in loose curls and a stunning red jeweled clip held one side back. Red silk ballet flats finished her outfit, giving her that hint of innocence she would never shake. She was stunning.
Her body was more at ease as I gazed upon her, noticing the glow of her skin. I knew that glow all too well. Looking to my wife I saw the innocent look come over her face. How naughty of her to participate in bedroom activities with sweet Sadie without me. Slight jealousy came over me, but I felt it pass quickly. Looking away from Alice my eyes met with Sadie’s. A tender smile was on her face and I knew she made my jealousy dissipate.
“She wants you Jasper. Just you tonight. We spoke about it this afternoon, but she has been too scared to come to you.” Alice whispered. A smile came over her features and I could feel that wonderful feeling of satisfaction flow out of her. This was the moment the two of us had waited for.
We had all gotten closer over the past month, but Sadie was still nervous of being alone with me intimately without Alice. I understood her fear of a man, but I could not help but feel left out of her life in some way when she welcomed Alice to her body readily, but was slightly more reserved with me. I knew it would take time, and it seemed the wait was at last over.
********************************
The night passed better than anyone could have imagined. The entire Cullen clan welcome Sadie into the family without question, and for the first time in a long time she felt she had a home and a real family.
There had been a few family get tog ether’s but this was the first Sadie felt fully accepted. The party they threw for her was beyond extravagant. Their home, which was always stunning, was decorated in the finest of ways. The party seemed as though it was being thrown for someone who was royalty.
Shortly after she arrived Carlisle had disappeared and returned pushing a wheeled tray with the largest cake she had ever seen. It was a deep velvet red, her favorite color, with the most intricate designs painted all over it. It tasted as amazing as it looked.
After they sang happy birthday to her, and she blew out her candles Emmett, Edward, Rosalie, and Bella all disappeared and reappeared with their arms loaded with birthday presents. The various boxes were wrapped in the finest paper, all red of course, with soft satin ribbons for an accent. While the gifts were amazing, and more than she would ever have dared asked for, what she appreciated most was the warmth and caring she received from the Cullen’s this night.
The evening passed rapidly, and before Sadie knew it, it was one o clock in the morning, she was sitting upon the couch, nestled against Alice with Esme sitting on her other side. Everyone was talking, and soon Sadie couldn’t hear what they were saying only the murmuring of their voices. Her gaze was locked on Jasper. He stood across the living room with Edward and Emmett, most likely discussing where to go hunting this weekend. It was the once a month family hunting weekend, and it was Jasper’s turn to go, with Alice staying home with Sadie. She had heard numerous stories of how the boys of the family would compete when out on the hunt.
Something in her began to ache and she could feel the welling of tears begin to take over. She had had several weekends with Jasper where she wished it were Alice, and now all she wanted was Jasper to stay with her this weekend. She loved Alice more than anything, but something in her was calling for Jasper and the thought of him being away was painful.
Just as she thought the tears would pour, she felt everything disappear and her body became calm. She watched as Edward began to lean away from Jasper’s ear and realized he had read her thoughts and most likely shared them with her silent companion. A small smile and a nod were her answer as he continued to watch her. He was beautiful as she gazed into those amber eyes. He stood proudly across the room watching her quietly. She could feel the flow of comfort wash over her in that instant, Jasper was calming her.
Everything was suddenly so clear…. She wanted to be a part of this family, in the beginning mostly it was for her lovers, but now she wanted it for herself. Her fear had been holding her back for too long. It had held her away from Jasper, and had held her away from the family all together. It was the voice in her head and the reminders from her step father that she would never be good enough that kept her reserved and avoidant. The family and Jasper were never sending those messages, and for the first time she was ready to conquer those voices.
Coming out of her haze, she pulled herself from Alice’s side and mustered her courage as she walked toward Carlisle. He was just walking back into the room after packing her gifts into the car when she met him at the entrance to the family room. His presence was the most overwhelming of the entire family. He was bold and kind all in the same instant, but he was the driving force of the Cullen’s. It was this gentle vampire that everyone turned to and revered. It took every ounce of courage she had to even be able to look him in the eye.
A confused, but polite smile came over his smooth face and his kind eyes glowed at her as he waited for her to ask her question. She could feel everyone watching her and with every ounce of energy she had left she took a deep breath.
“Carlisle, I know this weekend is your family hunting weekend. I was wondering if I could come with?” She held the rest of her breath as she watched his face for his reaction.
First there was surprise, and slowly that calm smile turned into a full blown grin. Without a second thought he turned to the family and took her hand in his own.
“Well family, I have just been asked by our sweet Sadie if she can accompany us this weekend for our family hunt. I am in full agreement that she should come. What does everyone else say?”
She sincerely couldn’t breathe as she waited for everyone to respond. Thank goodness she didn’t have to wait much longer. Alice was first as always.
“OH YES! That would be excellent!”
Esme nodded her agreement followed by Rosalie. Bella stood quickly to stand beside Sadie.
“Don’t worry, I’ll stay with you in the tree tops.” She said excitedly as she took her other hand.
Emmett merely grinned. “I don’t mind you coming at all Sadie. Edward and Jasper probably will though, seeing as how I’ll embarrass them with my skills.”
The look of horror melted off Sadie’s face as she realized Emmett’s joke and began to laugh as both Edward and Jasper smacked their bigger brother. Edward landing a solid punch to one arm as Jasper’s closed hand connected with his other.
“WHAT!” Emmett yelled as the two brothers walked away from him.
“Don’t listen to him Sadie, his only skill is at getting my left overs.” Edward said confidently as he strutted away from the bruised Emmett.
“Ha! Whatever Edward, when you’re done stuffing yourself there’s nothing left! Besides, Jasper’s the slow one, he’s always picking at your left overs.” Emmett yelled, not expecting the side of Jasper’s arm to connect with the back of his shoulder, pushing him to the ground.
Carlisle began laughing as Esme scolded Jasper for being so rough. A haughty smile was all that graced Jasper’s features as he floated toward Sadie. He was so beautiful with that curly blond hair whisping around his face, only accenting those strong features he was blessed with.
“We’ll see this weekend wont we Emmett, and I assure you, it will not be me who is done hunting last.” Jasper stated, stopping right in front of his lovely girlfriend a mischievous grin painting his usually innocent face.
Carlisle and Bella moved from Sadie as Jasper moved to stand beside her. The room became quiet suddenly. All of the vampires in the room could sense the tension growing. Not a negative tension, just a strong need coming from their silent son and his human girlfriend.
Alice was the first to break the silence. “Well, I realize that we are hunting this weekend, but it is only Monday, we should probably have a little something to keep ourselves satiated until then.”
The others nodded their agreement and began toward the sliding door at the back of the house that led to the woods. Alice was the last to leave. As she walked past her husband and companion she placed a small kiss to each cheek of both and gave a subtle wink. In the next instant she was gone.
**********************************
The house suddenly felt intensely empty as Sadie and Jasper stood in the living room, the large spacious home was eerily silent.
Sadie could feel her heart about to pound out of her chest, and as she stood staring at Jasper’s lovely profile she watched his full lips turn into a small smile. He could hear her rushed heart beat. As she continued to watch him she felt his energy against her, but she pushed it away. She had learned to push away the energy from the others, it was using the energy that was the hardest. She still didn’t fully understand, but for this moment she didn’t need to. She didn’t want his comfort or to be soothed. She wanted to feel. Never in her life had she been so alive… and she wanted to experience it, not push it away or calm down.
Before she could think she walked the short distance to Jasper and stood before him. Those beautiful honey eyes looked away from the sliding door where his family had left from and gazed down at the bold woman in front of him.
Before he could utter a sound, Sadie walked into his embrace, pressed her trembling body against his and brought the warmth of her mouth to the coolness of his. He felt amazing, and her confidence grew as his smooth cool hands slid along her waist to hold her closer.
For the moment she allowed the feel of his hard chest, the tenderness of his loving hands, and the soft feel of his lips to radiate through her. She knew he was fighting for control, but for once, she didn’t want it. Sadie wanted to know the passionate wild Jasper, only few had ever been privileged to see.
Gathering her courage, she allowed her soft tongue to trace Jasper’s full lips, and without hesitation he opened to her, allowing her to explore his cool mouth. She could feel his cool fingers tighten on her back and a small moan escaped his chest. Her desire spiked and she pressed herself further to him.
As her tongue swept through his mouth languidly, Jasper struggled to maintain his composure. The feel of her pressed to him and the sound of her heart pounding was blissfully painful to his ever pressing arousal. The smell of her sweet blood was intoxicating, and surprisingly was the only aspect keeping him contained. Every ounce of his being wanted to rip the silk red dress from her and ravage her needy body right on the floor beneath them. However he knew he must take his time for her……
But oh how naughty his sweet Sadie is…
As he felt her small hands move into his hair and hold his face tightly against her own, his control snapped and he ripped his head away from Sadie’s. He had to have her now…
Sadie was startled as Jasper roughly pulled away from her kiss, and the look in his eyes peaked her fear as well as her lust. The raw intensity in his amber eyes was overwhelming and he felt as though his gaze was scorching her body with need.
“Take me Jasper…” she gasped, feeling his arms wrap around her body, lifting her from the floor and flying through the back doors.
Jasper did not need to be told twice. He could barely feel the light rain of the evening come down on him as he darted through out the woods to his home.
It felt like an eternity before he at last reached the back doors to his own home and entered his silent dwelling. The air stopped moving, and the darkness settled in over their two bodies.
All Jasper could hear was the soft sound of Sadie panting, and all Sadie could see was the soft amber glow of Jasper’s wide eyes as he stared silently upon her. She was damp from the run, and her hair and clothes were a mess from the whipping of the wind against her. Unsteadily, she slid from Jasper’s embrace, took his hand, and led him toward his study.
“I hope you don’t mind Jasper… but it’s always been a fantasy of mine to make love to you in front of your fireplace.” Sadie whispered, her cheeks stained red as she admitted her fantasy to Jasper.
She felt him move from her slowly, to stand in front of her. His smooth hand on her chin, tilted her face to meet his.
“I’m happy to oblige you in this my darling.” Jasper whispered huskily, taking Sadie’s mouth in a deep kiss as he moved them both through the open doors of his study, silently shutting the large doors behind them.
