Chapter 6

I couldn’t believe it. There walking through the door was my one time boss Doctor Ianto Noble. He was an English man in his forty’s. His family where world renowned for being the top experts in anything and everything shifter related, I had worked with him at the Zoo. He was really cool. He knew things about Werewolves I never even knew. And I was raised by them.

“Doctor Noble!” I called to get his attention.

He looked in my direction surprised to see me. “Dave? What a pleasure to see you again.”

We shook hands and he took a seat next to nick “This a Nick he’s a friend.”

“Nice meeting you.” Nick said shaking his hand.

“This is Ianto Noble, he is.”

“From the Noble family yes I love your work.” Nick said with a smile.

Duh of course he knows about the Doc, every shifter alive knows of him. He was famous for trying to ban laws that where to Anti-shifter. He was a hero amongst the shifters.

“So what are you doing here Doctor-“

“Please Dave I’m not your boss no more.” He said waving his hand “Please call me Ianto.”

“Okay, Ianto. What brings you here?”

“I’m here to get something to drink and a quick bite. I have to do a lecture at the university about Lycanthropology.” That is the study of shifters, there behavior, there culture, and of course there unique biological make up.

“How many people actually sign up for that?” I asked.

“Not many, they like to read about it. Only a few actually want to get up close and personal. The others are to scared.” He said.

Gee I wonder why?

“What can I get you?” I asked.

“Some ice tea and a cheeseburger, onions, tomato and lettuce.” He said.

“Coming right up.” I said.

I walked back into the kitchen to give my order to the cook Cooter.

“S’up Dave.” Cooter said. He was making food in front of the stove. He wore a bandana around his head to keep the sweat from pouring of his head. Which is funny because in the time I have worked here I have never once seen him sweat, maybe it has something to do with him being a Werecrocodile. That’s right you heard me Werecrocodile. They say cat Lycanthropy is hard to catch, but reptile is almost impossible. Cooter said he was just one of those lucky few.

Cooter was born in Florida. He never said where but he had a very strong southern accent. I had never seen a Werecrocodile in it’s shifted form and I confess a large part of me was curious to see.

“I have a order for a cheeseburger with onions, tomato’s, and lettuce.” I said telling him the order.

“comen right up.” He said.

“So guess who is ordering this.” I said.

“Unless it’s someone I would care to know I don wana know.” He said.

“Ianto Noble.” I said.

“The fames shfer guy?” he asked surprised.

“One in the same.” I said.

“Shit, probably here to scope out us shifters.” He said rubbing his head. He wore a leather string witch Crocodile teeth wrapped around it on his right hand.

“Now he said he was going to go to the university to discuss Lycanthropology to the students.”

“Shit this man is a fool, no one wants to get up close with us anima people, we to scary.” He said with a smile.

“I wouldn’t mind being a Lycanthropologist.” I said.

“Shiit boy, wit dat power yours you’d be better then that bozo.” Cooter said with a grin.

“You know Cooter if I was your boss I would give you a raise.” I said.

“Shit if you where my boss I’d be pissed.” He said with a frown.

“What for?” I asked indigently.

“I’m twenty eight years old, it be shameful to be working under a kid.” He laughed.

“Screw you.” I laughed back.

“But seriously though Dave don’t go down that path.” Cooter said seriously all of a sudden.

Cooter could do that. All fun and games one second then like flipping a switch he could be all serious and cool.

“Don’t what?” I asked.

“Don’t go looken fer trouble with us, we’ll find you.” He said going back to fixing the burger. “Everyone knows your weird ass power attracts us. Don’t be getting a job that makes you come ta us, we’ll be comen to you all on our own.” He said handing me the burger “Tell your friend it’s from Cooter with love.”

“Will do coot.” I said.

I walked back out and gave Ianto his burger. Him and Nick where talking about something, “Yes of course I’ll get right on it.” Nick said.

“What’s up?” I asked placing the burger in front of Ianto.

“I was asking Nick if he could ask his Ulfric if I could bring in a few of his pack members to bring to the university one day.” Ianto said.

“How did you know he is a shifter?” I asked.

“I told him. I’m one of the pack members who isn’t in hiding.” Nick said.

I felt my insides squirm. I wondered if Nick had been revealed when my power sucked on the triumvirate’s power. It had caused many wolves to shift and reveal who they really where to the public. I hope he wasn’t one of them that would make things awkward. Being guarded by someone whose life you dramatically changed would definitely be weird.

I went to go get the ice tea when my cell phone began to vibrate. I flipped it open and saw it was from Michelle. Michelle was one of Drake’s Harem. She was a petit girl with a slim waist, dark curly hair and light blue eyes. Of all of Drake’s Harem she was the most mature. Even more so then Drake at times. You could always count on her to keep on track.

I opened the message and was confused by what I read. ‘She is coming, be careful and don’t tell her too much.’

Her? Who is her? I put my phone back into my pocket and got the ice tea. Would I know who the mystery girl was? Would she seek me out? I wasn’t to worried. Nick was here and he seemed like a good body guard.

I brought the tea back to Ianto who was still talking to Nick. Should I tell Nick about the text? He was my bodyguard and he should know. But Ianto was there and I didn’t want him involved.

“Thanks for the food, I need to get going. I’ll call you soon Dave there are some things I need to talk to you about. Nice meeting you Nick,” Ianto said grabbing the food and leaving. Lucky me.

“So what do you think of Ianto? I asked.

“He’s pretty cool, it’s so weird I just met our biggest sympathizer,” he said.

“Look while I was getting the food I got a text from one of Drake’s people. She says she is coming and not to tell her too much.”

“”Whose she?” He asked.

I was about to answer when I saw who just walked through the door. “I guess I know now.” I said.

There standing in the door way was Holly. Drakes sister. She saw me and smiled, I had a feeling I was about to spend some quality bonding time with her.

She came walking over to me and I knew why Michelle had sent me a warning. I knew to be careful around her. She had made it clear she loved her brother but it wouldn’t stop her from taking him out if it would help her. I knew she was a favorite of the Queen. She knew about my power and more importantly my relationship with her brother. She never did anything to me but I knew better then to get to chummy with her. I had no idea if she had told her mom about me and Drake but I wanted to stay on her good side, just in case.

“Hello David,” She said pleasantly.

“Hello Holly, how may I help you?” I asked.

She sat down a seat away from Nick. I wonder if she knew he was a wolf? Some shifters are really good at hiding what they are so not even sensitive’s can sense them. Only really experienced shifters could do it. But no matter how hard they tried they could never hide from me, my power sense’s them no matter what.

“I was hoping we could talk real quick, I have been meaning to talk to you for a while now but Drake has been really stubborn about it,” She smiled. Translation Drake forbid it, knowing him he was going to be pissed when he found out. I wonder if Michelle called him. Would he come rushing in here all fire and brimstone and get into a loud argument with Holly? Just what I need, my boyfriend, or should I say friend with benefits getting into a fight with his sister at my workplace.

“I’m kind of working right now,” I said.

“I won’t be long, I was hoping for it to be more private though,” She said looking at Nick. I guess she did know he was a shifter after all.

“How did you know I was his body guard?” He asked her.

“Everyone knows last night your clans magic warned him of danger, plus you’re a wolf. If he can help find the threat to your pack your ulfric wouldn’t want him to get hurt. Plus you have been keeping a watchful eye on me since the moment I came in,” She said.

“I thought bats where supposed to be blind to the world?” He asked.

“I thought wolves where masters of stealth,” She shot back.

They where acting all friendly but there was a tightness around his jaw and a flash in her eyes that told me this had know become a one upmenship thing. Shifters where all about that. Even the little things could be used to show how much better they where then each other.

“It’s okay Nick, she’s Drake’s sister,” I said.

“So, I’m sure it’s not to important for me to leave,” He said.

“This is bat business, so leave,” She said narrowing her eyes at him.

I felt the energy begin to flow from the two. I saw a few heads turn in our direction; The Lunatic Café was a popular spot for shifters. I sensed a few wolves in the crowd, I saw them narrow there eyes at Holly. A few even inconspicuously got up out of there chairs so as not to alarm the normal humans who where unaware of the potential fight.

“Nick doesn’t have to leave, but Nick if maybe you could just go far away enough to not overhear anything, but close enough where you can keep an eye on me would be preferred,” I said.

“I am your bodyguard,” He said.

“And your doing a great job. But I don’t think she is going to come all the way over hear to hurt me in front of so many witnesses,” I said.

“All right, but if she gives you trouble of any kind you know where to find me,” He said. Hr got up and moved to a nearby table that would allow him to keep an eye on me but make it difficult even for his sense’s to pick anything up.

“Wolves, such stubborn creatures,” Holly said. “Now Dave as you may or may not know Drake will be leaving soon.”

“What?” I said confused.

“Guess Drake hasn’t told you. Our Queen has ordered Drake to the capital, our home base so to speak. And as a member of his Harem you are duty bound to follow him where he goes. However there are rules about having humans in our place of power. However because you are Drakes Harem boy and unique I have petitioned for the Queen to make an exception and allow you there,” She said.

“What?” I asked even more confused.

“Oh boy. Look The Queen wants to have a talk with him. She is mighty upset with him. She knows all about you and isn’t pleased with his choice in bed mates. A few days ago he got a call from her ordering him back. Now unless I can convince her to let you come so she can see how powerful you are and not punish him to severely Drake is heading for a world of hurt,” She said seriously.

“Why didn’t he tell me?” I asked.

“Drake is very protective of you. He didn’t want to put you under any kind of stress after the incident with those fanatics. I have tried to convince him to allow you to come so he has a chance of getting a mere slap on the wrists. But he is being to damn stubborn,” She said with a sour look on her face.

I was trying to absorb all this information as quickly as possible. First my new mysterious enemy now this? My biggest concern was why Holly was so concerned for Drake, I remembered she once said that although she loved her brother that wouldn’t stop her from taking him out to get what she wanted. I also recalled Jen telling me once that Holly has a hundred reasons for what she does. And ninety nine of those reasons are self-beneficiary.

“Why do you care so much?” I asked. No reason to beat around the bush.

“I love my brother Dave never mistake that. However if the time should ever come where it is either me or the throne, I will chose the throne. But in the meantime why should I let him receive harm when it could be avoided. I don’t want to see him get hurt at all if there is no reason for it,” She said.

Is it just me or did she make that sound so selfish, yet so caring at the same time?

“When does he have to go back?” I asked.

“He has requested the Queen allow him to stay for your birthday which she was gracious enough to grant him his request. But he must leave immediately after,” She said.

“Holly last night there was an incident. I learned there is a traitor among the wolf pack,” I said. I left out the part where it is a tamer and it’s master is an Animus like me. “I can’t just up and leave now and leave the pack defenseless against this threat. I have to help them find it.”

“Surely with your power it will be easy?” She asked.

“Who ever this is is very sneaky. Even my power is having trouble finding him or her,” I said.

“Hmm, I see. Well it may be impossible anyway. I doubt Drake could be swayed anyway, but please if you could talk to him for me?” She said. “Nice talking to you Dave see you soon.” And with that she left.

“What was that all about?” Nick asked walking back over from the table.

“That was personal,” I said. Nick didn’t need to know. This was personal and he was just a bodyguard.

I then began to go about my business. But it was obvious I was angry. Nick didn’t say anything about it, he just continued to eat his food and keep an eye on me. Soon how ever the source of my wrath came in through the door. Drake quickly looked around. I saw him sniff the air, he knew Holly had been here recently.

He came straight over to me, looking agitated. “Where is she?” He asked.

“Holly just left and we had a very interesting conversation,” I said.

“Dave,” He began.

“I don’t want to here it Drake,” I said angrily. “You should have told me.”

“I didn’t want you to worry unnecessarily,” he said.

“Unnecessarily? Drake this is serious, Holly herself is worried and she doesn’t strike me as someone who worries easily. Were supposed to be partners Drake, were not supposed to keep secrets from each other,” I said.

“I only recently found out,” He said.

“And in that amount of time you couldn’t have mentioned your little road trip?” I asked.

“Dave it is to dangerous for you to go. If I take you and the Queen decides you must stay, or must become infected there is nothing I can do to stop her. I am already in some deep shit with her because I have decided to open up more connections with your world. Holly hopes if I bring you the Queen that will win me some points. But I know my mother, she is extremely xenophobic. It doesn’t matter if your special or not, once she learns of your gift and your carrying the Bat virus she will either kill you or make you turn into a Bat,” He said.

“Why would she kill me?” I asked.

“If she can’t control you then she will kill you. We still don’t know what your capable of David, and we don’t know what would happen if you became a Shifter.”

“But I’m your Harem boy, isn’t there some bat law that keeps her from hurting me?” I asked.

“You’re an outsider the rules are different, and she is the Queen, she can eliminate any threat she see’s fit.”

“Holly said if I go there’s a chance you won’t be punished,” I said.

“No she didn’t, I’m sure she said I wouldn’t be punished as severely,” He said with a smile.

“Drake this is serious,” I said.

“Of course it is, but I knew what I was getting myself into when I began this,” He said taking my hand into his.

“Will I see you again?” I asked.

“Of course you will, you aren’t getting rid of me that easily. I just have to go to the capital explain myself take my punishment and be back before I know it. I can stay for your birthday party though.”

“Holly said that too,” I said squeezing his hand. “I’m still pissed you kept this from me though so don’t think your off the hook bat boy,” I said.

“Oh and what do you intend to do about it pup?” He asked playfully.

“Are you guys always like this in public?” Nick asked. Oops forgot he was there.
