Kasumi crouched low in the bush, his spear held firmly in his hand. Waiting was the hard part, but nothing ever came without patience; at least that’s what his father always used to say to him. He’d even learned to control his breathing so no one would know he was there.
He heard the deer before he saw it. With lightning-fast reflexes he sprang from the bush and threw the spear with all his strength. His aim was true and he hit the deer in the neck, making it wobble and eventually fall.
Liam came to a sudden stop beside him with a wide grin. “Your aim is getting better.”
Kasumi greeted his hunting partner with a soft kiss. Liam’s whole body was cold, and his skin felt like very soft and smooth leather stretched over stone. He knew what Liam was, and according to everyone else he should be afraid, but he wasn’t.
He breathed in the delightful, exotic scent of his lover and smiled. “I couldn’t do it without you. You’re a great chaser. Here, I have something for you.”
He reached into his pouch and pulled out a necklace. It was a wolf’s tooth tied on a leather cord, with a few green glass beads threaded on either side. It even had a metal clasp on it that he’d gotten from a white man. “I made this for my pale wolf,” he announced proudly as he put it around Liam’s neck.
“Thank you, it’s beautiful,” Liam responded, admiring it. “I’ll treasure it always.”
Liam picked up the dead deer easily, as if it weighed no more than a feather, and the two men walked hand in hand back to the village. When they got back, Liam’s equally beautiful brother was treating an injured member of another hunting party.
Jacob’s eyes fluttered open. His arm moved to feel the empty space beside him. He knew he was alone, and yet the confirmation of that fact filled him with soul-crushing agony. The pain grew until a scream ripped from his throat and tears slid down his cheeks.
Billy wheeled himself into the room, knocking over a few things in his hurry. “Jake, what’s wrong? What hurts?”
Jacob opened his eyes and wiped away the tears. How could he explain this? How could he explain the sudden empty feeling in the pit of his stomach that had been triggered by a dream about a vampire? “Bad dream again,” he mumbled.
“Must have been some bad dream. Son, I know this is hard, but it will get better, I promise.”
Jacob laughed bitterly. His father had no idea. Somehow he knew this had nothing to do with becoming a wolf. “Have you ever had memories that weren’t yours?” he asked, knowing he wasn’t making sense. “I mean, everything is so clear, like it was yesterday—but you aren’t you.”
“So in your dream you’re someone else?”
Jacob nodded. “Yes. I’ve been different people, but the person with me is always the same.”
Billy stared out the window thoughtfully. “And how many times has this happened?”
“Twice,” Jacob answered truthfully.
“I think you’d better talk this over with Sam.”
Jacob sighed and rolled over. This wasn’t something he was going to tell Sam. Only one person could possibly understand, and unfortunately it was the one person he wasn’t allowed to see right now.
Bella feared Liam would disappear on her again, so she was delighted when he didn’t. The very next morning she found a phone number taped to her dashboard. Seeing him again was all she could think about in class, but she had to wait until she got home.
Her hands were shaking as she picked up the phone and dialed the number. When it started to ring she was overcome by the sudden fear that he wouldn’t answer.
“Hello, sunshine,” she heard the familiar cheery voice say, four rings later. “I was wondering when I was going to hear from you.”
“I had to go to school,” Bella replied almost defensively. “But I’m glad you’re not going to abandon me.”
“How could I? If I tried, you’d probably tear the entire town apart looking for me,” Liam joked.
Bella laughed despite herself. Not even Jacob had been able to make her laugh so easily. Then something dawned on her. “Liam, if I ask you something, will you tell me the truth?”
“Depends,” Liam answered, knowing he couldn’t answer any questions about Edward.
“Your ability—can you do it over the phone?”
It was Liam’s turn to laugh. “No. I have to at least be in the same room with you.”
She blushed, feeling rather stupid. “Oh. Well, what are you doing now?”
“Watching a movie. There really isn’t much to do here.”
“Will you come over later? I still haven’t heard from Jacob.”
Liam wasn’t surprised, but he could hear the loneliness in her tone. “I suppose I could, but I think I should wait until later. I managed to keep Charlie from hitting the roof last night, but I don’t know how long that will work. Even I have my limits.”
“Okay.” Bella nodded. “So after dinner or something?”
“Yeah, right around bedtime, maybe. I’ll sneak in through the window.”
“Sounds good.” Bella smiled. She wasn’t going to be facing another lonely night after all. “See you then.”
It had been a short conversation, but it had done wonders for Bella. She needed this new link to the past. If Liam was here, then she couldn’t have dreamed it all. Edward existed, and Liam had said he was going to help her get him back.
The anticipation of seeing him again occupied her mind for the rest of the evening. She burnt the fried chicken, something she hadn’t done since she learned to cook. Then she over-boiled the potatoes, but at least that made them easier to mash.
Charlie couldn’t help but notice her odd behavior. “Something on your mind?” he asked when he sat down to dinner.
Bella just shrugged. “I guess I missed my friends so much I can’t wait to see them again,” she said, telling a half-truth. She knew better than to try and get away with a lie.
“I’m glad to see you’ve rejoined the world of the living. And by the way, have you talked to that Cullen kid since last night?”
Bella froze, trying to think of what to say. “Yeah, he called earlier to ask how my computer was working.”
Charlie shook his head. “I don’t like it. I know he’s not….” But even Charlie knew not to say the name. “But there’s something not natural about a twenty-one-year-old boy hanging around a seventeen-year-old-girl.”
“Dad, he’s just a nice guy,” Bella argued. “He found me when I got lost in the woods. Yes, I know, I shouldn’t have been out there by myself. But really, he’s Dr. Cullen’s brother, through and through. Dr. Cullen practically raised him.”
“Is that so? Still, I want you to be careful.”
“I will, Dad,” Bella promised.
The rest of the meal was quiet. Bella cleaned up quickly and went upstairs muttering about homework. “Are you afraid I’ll try to make a move on you?” The question came from the window.
Bella jumped and whirled around. “Liam, you scared me! And no, I’m not worried.”
Liam came into the light and sat down in the rocking chair again. “Good, because you’re not my type anyway.”
“Not your type? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’re an icky girl!” Liam smirked and laughed.
“Wait—you’re gay?” Bella asked in surprise.
Liam nodded. “Incurably. My very first crush was on a boy who lived down the street. I was five. Ever since then….”
“Does your family know?”
“Yes. My father even found out, shortly before he died.”
Bella took a seat on her bed. The whole thing was a little shocking. She found it didn’t bother her though. “If you don’t mind my asking, how did your father die? Was it from the shock?”
“Carlisle killed him,” Liam answered, his tone disturbingly casual.
“What?” Bella cried. It was difficult to imagine Carlisle killing anyone. Even as a vampire he’d tried to kill himself rather than someone else. “You can’t just tell me that and then not tell me what happened.”
Liam was quiet for a moment. “Like I said, our father found out about my preference. He caught his best friend raping me, and of course I ended up being the scapegoat. It wasn’t hard for Father to believe. I wasn’t exactly the best behaved child.”
“But that doesn’t justify you being raped,” Bella said in horror. “Was that the first time?”
Liam snorted. “No. The man was sick, but there was nothing I could do about it. Only Carlisle believed me. Of course, there were a few boys my own age I’d taken to the church for sex. One of them told, and that confirmed the fact that the devil had taken control of my soul.”
“That’s absurd!” Bella was on the edge of her seat. Edward had told her Carlisle’s father was a zealous priest, but turning on his own son seemed a bit much.
“It wasn’t to him. He decided my soul needed to be saved. He snatched me out of my bed in the middle of the night and dragged me to a pond out in the countryside. He was determined to wash away the evil. When Carlisle found out he raced after us to save me. He almost didn’t get there in time. Father was holding me under the water and saying a prayer over me while I drowned.
The rest is a little hazy. All I really remember is Carlisle pulling me to the surface. I heard them arguing and then I passed out. When I came to, Carlisle was curled up in a ball beside me and Father was few feet away, soaked and blue. We buried him, then pretended we didn’t know what had happened to him. I think that’s why Carlisle took over: guilt.”
Bella sat quietly, letting everything sink in. It was true that Carlisle seemed to do a lot of the things he did out of guilt, but that kind face didn’t seem like the type that would commit patricide. Still, if the story was true, it didn’t seem like there had been much choice. “What happened then?”
“I ran away from home with a boy I was in love with. We were fortunate enough to be taken in by druids. Yes, they still existed, they were just in hiding. I don’t think one of them coming across us was a coincidence. As you get older, you’ll find that few things are.”
“Do you think it’s a coincidence that Jacob stopped talking to me the day he confessed his feelings, and I told him I didn’t feel the same?”
Liam shook his head. “Let me ask you something. How did you find out about vampires?”
Bella was surprised by the question and wondered what it had to do with Jacob. Liam clearly knew something he wasn’t telling. “First I got Jacob to tell me stories about the cold ones. He said the treaty was made with the same Cullens, and that’s why they didn’t go on Quileute land.”
“Yes, I remember. Did he tell you anything else about his people?”
Bella tried to think. “He said they were descended from wolves, and could turn into wolves, but it was just a story.”
Liam lowered his head and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Bella, I know you’re not really this stupid. Think about it.”
Bella huffed. She thought Liam was nice, but nice people didn’t call others stupid. “I am thinking, and you’re not making any sense!”
“What am I?”
“A vampire.” Bella said the word easily. The man sitting in her bedroom was a vampire, and that didn’t bother her.
“And do most people believe vampires are real?”
“No.” It was then that it dawned on her. “Are you telling me Jacob is a werewolf?”
“Finally!” Liam cried. “Yes, the Quileutes can phase into wolves—some of them anyway. They do it to protect their land, mostly against vampires.”
Bella was absolutely stunned. “Why me?”
Liam chuckled. “I guess some people are just special. As I said, there are no coincidences. Such a concept is merely a façade created to help the narrow-minded sleep better at night. Even my being bitten serves some higher purpose, though I have yet to figure out what that is.”
Bella sighed. “So what should I do about Jake?”
“Tell him you know. He isn’t allowed to tell you, but what can he do if you figure it out? Sam will be angry, but he’ll just have to deal with it.”
“What does Sam have to do with all of this?”
“Since he was the first to phase, he’s the Alpha.”
“How do you know so much about wolves?”
Liam sported an impish grin. “Zachariah Black, the chief’s cousin. As you well know, I can be very charming, and I don’t look dangerous.”
Bella could almost see Liam seducing one of the natives. Like the rest of the Cullens, things probably came easily to him; maybe even more so to him than the others.
They continued talking well into the night. Liam had quite a few interesting stories to tell, and didn’t mind telling them. Unlike his brother, Liam hadn’t settled on one career path. He’d tried dozens of different things, from being a gourmet chef to a stripper.
But as much as Bella wanted to stay awake and listen to Liam’s life story, exhaustion soon claimed her. The last thing she was aware of was Liam leaving through her window and disappearing into the night.
