The thought of marrying the man who had ordered my village, and so many others, destroyed made me feel ill. As a young girl, I had dreamed of marrying a man I loved, and I knew there was no possible way I could ever love the cruel King.
Kiandra led me back to my room, and as we walked I tried to think of ways out of my predicament but nothing came to mind. When we finally reached my rooms a tentative plan formed in my mind. The room was filled with shelves of books. I had never been taught more than my basic letters by my father and had always loved the thought of curling up in front of the fire with a good book in the evenings.
"Kiandra," I said suddenly, inspiration striking as I gazed at the fine leather covers. "Do you know how to read?"
The woman looked surprised. "Yes, dear, I do. Why do you ask?"
I put on my best sad face. "I always dreamed of learning to read, so that I could read my husband a poem when we were married, and now it seems like I will not be able to if the king wants us married so soon." I put my face in my hands and prayed she believed me.
She did.
"Oh, you poor child!" She rushed over to me and put her arms around my shoulders. "Don't worry dear, I will make sure you can read before you are married, I will teach you myself."
"But how will you do that! Galbatorix will want us married as soon as possible!" I wailed it, turning and breaking free of Kiandra's arms to fling myself on the bed. I felt the mattress dip with her weight as she sat down next to me and began stroking my hair.
"You let me deal with him honey, I will take care of everything. Now you just take a nice little rest, you've had a big day full of lots of big surprises. I'll be back later with something to eat." The mattress rose as she stood up and soon I heard the click of the door closing, signaling her departure. I immediately sat up. Phase one was partially successful. The rest of it depended on Galbatorix's reaction and how eager he was to please his future bride. I hoped he was content to keep me happy for as long as it took to figure a way out of the city.
I spent the time alone looking at some of the many books and scrolls available for immediate perusal and getting familiar with what I had just committed myself to. A few characters looked familiar to me, but I had only learned enough for me to get by in my tiny village where it was rare for anyone to read at all. A quick look out of the window I had let me know there was no way out that way. It was too high off the ground; I would never make that without some kind of injury.
Kiandra came back a little while later, as promised, and she had a tray full of food and what looked like a tea pot. The scent wafted to me where I was seated under the window, and my stomach growled, reminding me of how long ago I had last eaten. The kind woman gave me a knowing smile and put the tray down in front of me.
"Eat up, child, you must be hungry."
I picked up a golden pastry and bit into it. The warm, meaty filling was seasoned perfectly and the flaky pastry melted in my mouth. It was the most delicious thing I had ever tasted. The tray also held fresh fruit in a clay bowl, another meat tart, and tea in a pretty painted cup. As I ate I thoughtfully unrolled one of the numerous scrolls and looked at the flowing script. It was somehow familiar, but I couldn't understand anything that was written there. Nonetheless, I was completely captivated by it.
'Must be that its pretty. And its got painting all around the edges,' I mused. I put the scroll back on top of its pile and picked a berry out of the bowl.
"Galbatorix has agreed to postpone the wedding until you have learned to read," Kiandra told me, breaking into my thoughts. "He was more than happy to grant your desire. He wants to see you happy. He also said it would give him more time to plan a spectacular celebration like you deserve."
I had to smile at that. With any luck, I would not be here that long.
-----------------------
I managed to put off the wedding for two moons while learning to read. I picked up on it very quickly, especially the flowing script I hadn't seen until then. It took a little bit of effort trying to convince Kiandra I wasn't learning as easily as we thought. Soon enough the truth was revealed, and I could no longer use my excuse.
"Hold still, child. If you don't stop fidgeting you will get jabbed." Kiandra was fitting me for the dress she had made for me to wear when I wed the king.
"I'm sorry, I'm just nervous."
"It's all right, its normal for a young woman to feel this way before her wedding."
My mind raced. I had to find another excuse, and fast. I thought of the lovely scroll I had come across. It was an Elven poem, and had become one of my favorites to read in my spare time. Inspiration struck again. "It's not just that, Kiandra. I'm writing a poem to read to the king during our celebration, and I'm afraid it won't be done in time."
Kiandra looked up at me from the bit of cloth she was pinning by my knee and smiled. "How sweet. I will have a word with the king and see what I can do for you."
A smile broke across my face, and I did not have to fake the relief in my voice. "Thank you, Kiandra. You have always been a good friend to me."
She flushed a dainty pink and looked back down at her pinning.
A few days later, I was to be found sitting at a low table beneath the window with a scroll in front of me. I was slowly writing a poem of sorts, but but was not the beautiful love ballad they were starting to expect. I was mostly doing it to keep up appearances. Galbatorix was starting to become impatient with me and was sending Kiandra to check on me more and more often. Many times I had begged out of writing and managed to put it off a little while longer by convincing Kiandra to walk with me, telling her I needed to rest for a while and come back with new inspiration. During these walks I looked for weaknesses, anything I could use to my advantage. Slowly but surely, a plan came together. I just needed the finishing touches and then to be able to pull it off.
One evening, as I sat at my little table, surrounded by burning candles, and bent over my half full scroll, I heard the door snick. I smiled.
"A little late for a visit, don't you think Kiandra?" I looked up and froze, my blood turned to ice and my heart started to hammer in my chest. It wasn't Kiandra who had come into my room.
It was the king.
