Hook’s Wendy
(Chapter Sixty)
“Nurse, has there been any change in her condition since last night?” A voice said in the distance, followed by a prick in her arm. “No doctor. She hasn’t even moved. Are you sure she’s going to live?” The female voice asked. “She’s banged up pretty good, but I think she’ll be alright. She’s always been a strong willed woman, she’ll get through this with flying colors. I don’t think there’s a need to admit her, I’ll see her home tonight.” Then everything went dark and there was nothing once again.
After a while, Cat’s eyes began to open as she looked upwards. There was a bright blur and her eyes hurt terribly. The light was suddenly turned off and she found it easier to open her eyes even though everything was still quite blurry. “How are you feeling? I was afraid you weren’t going to wake up at all Cat.” Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes tight before opening them once more, looking towards the face the voice the voice seemed to be coming from.
“Who are you?” She whispered not recognizing the voice that spoke to her or the place that she was in. “How do you know my name?” The voice held a rather concerned tone, as if this person knew her quite well. “Liam? Is that you?”
“Liam? Who is he? Cat, it’s been ages since I’ve seen you. Since anyone’s seen you. We thought you went home when you disappeared from the campus.” Her eyes began to clear and she saw a face. She blinked a few times in confusion recognizing the person who had been speaking to after only a moment.
“William!?” She said in disbelief as she started to sit up. He quickly reached for her pushing her back down so she didn’t hurt herself or find a rather painful spot, or he was certain she had many. “William . . . what . . . what happened to you?” She looked around a little frightened. “Where is this place? Why are you dressed like that?” William sighed as he tried to calm her down.
“Please, calm down. It’s going to be alright. Just relax, your safe, alright?” Caitlin took a deep breath and looked up at him again. He was much older than the last time she had seen him. MUCH older. “This is my home. My Grandfather left me his hospital and his estate just a short while after I graduated medical school. I’m a doctor now.” She began to shake her head as she started to sit up again, not quite certain if she was dreaming or not. “Caitlin please! I don’t want to have to restrain you. You’re hurt badly and you need to not move around so much.”
She closed her eyes and started to shake her head yet again, “Why . . . why do you look so different . . . so much older?” She whispered afraid to open her eyes. “A doctor . . . how is that . . .” William looked at her a moment before gently brushing her hair back off of her face, trying to comfort her and calm her down a bit.
“You don’t look any different from the day you disappeared Cat. You haven’t changed one bit. In every single way you’re still . . . 22 years old.” Cat opened her eyes and looked at him dumbfounded.
“Of course I am. It’s not time for my birthday yet, it’s still two months away.” A few of her memories were coming back into her mind, for she had forgotten the date of her birthday until he mentioned her age. It wasn’t something that came up in Neverland; James didn’t seem to care about how old she was. The doctor went quiet as he looked down at her, as if he was pained to tell her.
“Cat, I want you to listen to be very carefully. I don’t want you to be afraid; you must take deep breaths and stay calm. Can you do that for me?” The doctor wanted to start things slow, for he didn’t know how she was going to react to what he had to tell her. Caitlin felt an overwhelming sense of foreboding and confusion as a few more memories of her life before Neverland came back to her as the moments passed. William took a breath, before taking her hand in his and holding it tightly. “Cat . . . it’s been 14 years since you disappeared. No one has heard from you, no one knew what happened to you. As I said . . . we all thought you went home to America.”
Caitlin just stared at him in stunned silence. “No . . . no that’s not true. I’ve only been away from here for . . . for . . .” She stopped, as her mind began to flip back through the pages of her memories realizing she had never asked the month, nor could she tell one from another since the seasons seemed to not have any set schedule or pattern in Neverland. “Its . . . . just been a few months . . .” She said softly looking down.
William watched her quietly for a few moments. Not sure if he should continue with any more information for the night. “Cat, perhaps you should lay down and try to get some rest. We have many more things we have to discuss, and after you’ve had some sleep and something to eat, then we’ll try and figure out where you’ve been and what happened.” He started to stand to leave her to sleep, but she reached up and caught his arm.
“But I know where I’ve been William. I’ve been with James.” The doctor stopped and turned back looking at her. He knew that there was someone else since she left, after having treated her at the hospital when she was found. There was no doubt, but he couldn’t help but hope a bit.
“Rest Caitlin. We’ll talk tomorrow.” He said, before turning out the light and leaving the room. Cat lay back against the pillow, her eyes looking around the room. Nothing felt right, and she felt so cold and alone.
“James,” She whispered into the dark, “Where are you?”. She shivered feeling cold, lonely and empty inside.
Back in Neverland, Mr. Smee slowly and carefully opened the door of the cabin finding it pitch black. “Capt’n?” He whispered sliding in a little further. Smee pushed the double door open to let the daylight come in, even though a draft from the wind and snow came with it. “Capt’n? Are ye alright?” Nervously he let go of the door handle and took several slow and careful steps inside.
“I said I did not wish to be disturbed.” Came James voice. It was low, monotone, with no emotion whatsoever. Smee could see a figure sitting behind the Captain’s desk, and squinted his eyes trying to make them adjust to the darkness so he could see better.
“I know Capt’n, but . . . well . . . I was wonderin’ if you wanted . . . somethin’ to eat? It’s been a few days, and even ye can’t live without someth . . .”
“I SAID GET OUT!!!!” Hook roared breaking the errie silence that engulfed the room. A large crashing sound followed as he flung a large and heavy object at the door just barely missing his first mate. Smee stepped back and quickly scrambled for the door.
“Yes Capt’n . . .I’m sorry . . .I . . . yes Capt’n.” Quickly he hurried outside, closing the doors behind him. Smee took a deep breath looking at the snow-covered deck shaking his head. No one could do anything with him in this state. They would have to wait until he emerged from the cabin, or until they were sure was dead or unconscious to go in after him.
Back in the human world, Caitlin’s eyes opened slowly finding that the curtains in her room had been drawn back to let the sunlight in. Pushing the covers off of her she moved to sit up. When she tried to stand, her arms flew around her middle and she held on tight falling back to the bed. She was sore, as if she’d been sawed in half. The pain was so intense that tears immediately fell from her eyes, and she nearly passed out. Looking down at herself, she saw that she was wearing only a long shirt, and it was a man’s long night shirt at that. “James?” She called out a little disoriented. No answer came after a few moments, and she reached out placing her hand on the bedpost, pushing herself up to her feet gritting her teeth.
Slowly, she moved over to a dresser seeing some photographs in frames. They were all of William. Each one taken at his graduations, and when he received an award of some kind for all his works, or even when he earned another degree to add to his already impressive credentials. She paused seeing the one in the largest most expensive looking frame, and pulled it forward a little bit. IT was one that was taken on a field trip to London that she and the rest of the class had gone on. William had grabbed her and insisted on getting their picture taken together. He even paid the full price. As she stared at the picture, she began to recall things from her collage days.
“Cat! What are you doing out of bed?” She turned seeing William coming in with a tray of food. Walking over to the bedside table, he put it down and quickly walked to her hustling her back to the bed. “Please, for the love of God have some concern for yourself will you? Get in bed, and stay in bed until I say it is okay for you to get up.” Caitlin sighed and sat down but didn’t want to lie down anymore. She grit her teeth finding it incredibly painful to bend in any direction.
Shaking his head he put the tray of food next to her on the bed, and picked up a glass of orange juice holding it out for her to take. “Drink this, you need the vitamins.” He said before reaching in his pocket, “And take these.” He insisted putting several pills in her hand. Cat looked at them a moment before rolling them around in her hand. She looked towards William suspiciously, but put them in her mouth and swallowed them with a drink of orange juice. “That’s good. You’ll need some fluids in you. I’m sure you’re more than a bit dehydrated.” Quietly she sipped at the orange juice turning her eyes away from him. She still felt incredibly uneasy with all of this.
William watched her for a moment before deciding that he had to try and talk to her again. “The clothes that you were brought in wearing . . . were strange to say the least. I’m curious to know where you got them from. No one has worn such authentic clothing in . . .well a few centuries.” Cat just glanced at him before taking another drink not saying anything. William sighed and reached for the dagger that had been placed on the side table. Caitlin paused seeing this and looked at him.
“You were carrying this as well.” He said pulling it half way from its sheath admiring the blade. “I have to say it’s a very fine piece of weaponry. Remarkable craftsmanship . . . encrusted with real gold and jewels. It must be worth . . . well more than our tuitions combined when we were still students.” He put it back in its sheath touching his finger to the initials. “What do these letters stand for?” He questioned.
“It’s my name.” She replied softly. “Caitlin Wendy Hook.” Her eyes stayed fix solely on him as he held the dagger. William just quietly nodded before turning the dagger in his hands.
“Hook you say? Why on earth would you put such a word at the end of your name?” Cat blinked a little at his question Of course it was her name, what on earth gave him reason to doubt what she said? She didn’t answer and he sighed. “May I inquire as to how you came across such a fine knife? There is no doubt it’s yours with your initials engraved in it’s handle.”
“It was a gift. Something given to me so I could protect myself from harm.” Cat put her glass aside and reached out to take the dagger from him, but he pulled away keeping it from her reach. She frowned at this and held out her hand, “Please return it.”
“Cat, you know I can’t give this to you. Not now. Not until you give me some answers.” He said sternly. “I don’t want you to hurt yourself, or me for that matter.” Caitlin was dumbfounded.
“William . . . you think I’m insane? Is that what you’re saying?” The doctor winced realizing that his choice of words were perhaps a little closer to the point then he meant them to be. “Then give me back my dagger. It was given to me for protection and as long as you don’t do anything to hurt me, then you’re fine and have nothing to fear.” He shook his head and kept it obviously intending to take it away and put it somewhere secure that she couldn’t get it.
“Let’s talk about something else for a moment. We need to discuss some other things that are important, Cat. Here, finish drinking your juice and then take some bites of your toast.” Caitlin gave a large sigh of annoyance but did as she was asked. “We need to talk about . . . . your injuries. I didn’t mention them last night, I wanted you to rest and get a bit stronger first.” She shrugged having been injured many times before to date, and took a bite of toast.
“I should be used to them by now. I seem to be injured on a regular basis when I’m awake.” William took a breath watching her eat, not sure how to continue. Cat put down the toast and wiped her hands. “Speaking of injuries, why does it hurt so much when I sit down or stand, . . . or even move. Like I got kicked in the belly or something.”
This seemed like the perfect opportunity, now he could tell her since she brought it up without just pulling the details out of the air. “That . . . was the injury I was speaking of. Cat, I don’t know how to tell you this without upsetting you.”
“Then just say it. Don’t worry about my feelings.” She said picking up her glass of juice, “You’d be surprised at the things I’ve been told these past few months and managed to get passed them. Nothing you’re going to tell me is going to upset me THAT much.” Then she took another drink.
“Cat, you lost your baby.” The doctor blurted out before thinking it through completely as his nervousness got the better of him. Cat took the glass from her lips just staring at him a moment. “When you were found it looked like you had fallen from a very high distance. You also had bruises on your wrists and the back of your neck. As if you had been beaten, bound, and even dragged about by your arms.”
“William.” Cat began, “You claim to be a doctor but you have managed to make a huge mistake.” The doctor quieted and listened to her not understanding what she meant by that. “I can’t have children. I’ve never been able to have children. Besides, if I had been pregnant, which I am not nor ever was, James would have told me. Liam would have discovered it I’m sure, and would have made certain I knew.”
“Alright, now who are these two men? James and Liam you’re talking about.” He was certainly curious about this little fact and was thankful for the momentary subject shift. But the name James kept coming up and he was a little more then anxious to find out just who this man was.
“Liam is our ships surgeon, our doctor. He’s been caring for me every since I first went aboard the pirate’s ship, the Jolly Rodger. James is their Captain and my husband. We were married not long after he took me home.” William just looked at her with a blank stare blinking his eyes a few times.
“You’ve been aboard a ship all these years? What on earth are you . . .well what I mean is, where have you made port? For supplies and the like. What part of the world?”
“Neverland. Peter Pan captured James and the rest of the pirate crew long ago and took them to Neverland against their will. Now they are stuck there until the curse can be broken and they can come back to the mortal world. You see, this is my ring . . .” Cat held up her left hand to show him her wedding ring but it had gone missing. She frowned reaching up and touching her hand, knowing that she had been wearing it when she went out on deck of the Jolly Rodger to update her journal. “James gave me a ring a few weeks after we were married. I . . . guess I’ve lost it again.” She whisphered her heart breaking a little bit. After a moment she realized that their conversation had come to a dead stop and her eyes turned to William. He just sat there starring at her, not saying anything; his eyes seemed to have glazed over a bit at her words. “William?”
Giving a sigh he stood up running his fingers through his hair and pacing a little bit back and forth. “Cat, I didn’t let them admit you to the hospital. I didn’t think you needed to be there, and I wanted to find out where you had been and why you hadn’t aged.” He sighed again looking out the window. “I think I have made a mistake, and you definitely need treatment of some sort.”
“Treatment? For what? I’m not hurt that badly. I’m sitting up, eating, drinking, and talking to you aren’t I? I’ll be alright in a few days, I’ve had worse injuries.” She said softly not sure if she liked the sound of his words or the tone of his voice.
“No, Caitlin. I . . .well you are absolutely and completely delusional! The sort of pirates you seem to be speaking of haven’t existed in centuries!” Pushing the tray aside she started to stand, wanting to be on her feet to speak to him.
“But William, of course they exist.” He pushed her back down to the bed still not wanting her to get up yet. “I’m married to James. Liam and Danny are aboard the Jolly Rodger right now, and I’m sure they are wondering what has happened to me.” She looked at her dagger that he was carrying with him. “If I was lying, then where would I have gotten . . .”
“I KNOW! I know! The dagger and the clothes. Cat, this is England. You could have had these things made, gotten replicas of the originals, even found them in an old antique shop somewhere. Lord knows they have prints of the sorts of weapons that our privateers used to carry. Not to mention the actual articals in our museums. The cost would have been quite steep but it could be done. Then with the sort of trauma you have had, you might have forgotten you did it altogether.”
“Why on earth would I do something like that!?! Why would I make any of this up? Where in the world would I have gotten such a sum to do these things? William, please I didn’t come to you. I didn’t . . . just appear out of nowhere because I wanted to. I want to go home.”
“Cat . . . It’s been so long since you disappeared. I’m not sure that you even have a home left to go to.” Taking a deep breath he headed for the door with her dagger still in hand. “Go on, finish eating your breakfast. You need your strength.” He said before slipping outside and closing the door before she could say anything else.
In Neverland aboard the Jolly Rodger in James Cabin, the room continued to be sunken in darkness and the air was stale and still. Aurora had not dared to move since the human female was stolen away. Not sure what to do and not wanting to get caught being aboard the ship when she knew she wasn’t supposed to be there. But it had been nearly three days and she had fallen asleep. Surely by now, Hook had either fallen asleep or left the Cabin to eat or get some fresh air.
Slowly she crept up to the edge of the rafter and looked down, squinting her small eyes trying to see in the darkness. But it was no use. Even her small fairy eyes couldn’t penetrate the thick black that hung in the room like someone’s death shroud. She couldn’t hear anything, not even the sound of breathing so it must have been safe to leave the cabin and get back to the black castle where she had made her home. Slowly, her wings began to beat as she lifted herself into the air, her small body glowing brightly in it’s now purple glow.
Suddenly, she was snatched from the air and a thumb pressed hard against her small throat, her head thrown back so far she could hardly breathe. Then, a light filled the room when a heavy black cloth was removed from the lit lantern. Aurora looked up to find the rather angry and red eyes of Captain Hook glaring at her.
“I knew you were somewhere in my Cabin, Miss SUN. I have been waiting here for you to show yourself, and would have waited an eternity if I had to.” Walking around his desk, he pulled another cover off of another lantern with his hook and threw it aside, letting even more light fill the room. “We have a great deal to discuss you deceitful, malicious little creature!
