Chapter 7 – Comfort
The next morning, Erik awoke to find Christine propped up on the bed beside him, still only covered with the sheet. By the light of the few candles that were still burning, he could tell that she was looking at him tenderly and smiling.
“Good morning, Angel,” she greeted him.
He was touched that from time to time she still called him that. Erik lay on his side, the right half of his face in the pillow. He smiled back at her, thinking that it would be so easy to get used to seeing her there beside him when he first opened his eyes every morning. Lazily, he rolled onto his back and stretched. It took him a moment before he realized that air was hitting his face where it shouldn’t be. His eyes widened in horror and he automatically placed his hand over the disfigured side of his face. He turned away, refusing to look at her.
“Christine, why did you take it off?” he asked angrily.
She was offended that he thought her capable of doing such a thing. Even after their beautiful night of love and passion, it seemed that he still did not trust her, and it was breaking her heart.
“Erik, I didn’t remove your mask. It must have fallen off while you were asleep.”
He still did not turn back over.
“How does it feel knowing that you’ve laid with a monster?”
The tone of his voice gave her chills, but she understood that he was more than just angry. The way he had turned so quickly to hide his face showed that Erik felt fear as well – fear that his appearance would make him lose her. Christine wiped a tear from her eye before it had a chance to fall. She would not give up on him so easily. He needed to be shown that she loved him anyway, not just told. Even though he insisted on facing away from her, she moved closer to him, pressing herself against his back. She slipped her arm over his side and ran her hand along the smooth firmness of his chest.
“You are no monster, Erik. I love you. To me you are flawless.” Then she added as she pulled him nearer, “It does not bother me to see your face uncovered. I had been watching you sleep for a while without your mask on before you awakened.”
So she had not removed his mask, but had already seen his face while he slept, and still, she had been looking at him affectionately. Almost immediately, he calmed down, feeling guilty for having doubted her sincerity. He found the courage to let his hand fall away from his face, and turned over to look into her eyes. They embraced warmly. Christine’s cheek was soft and comforting against the roughness of his disfigured one.
“Forgive me,” he said softly, “I did not mean to…”
She silenced him with a kiss.
“It’s all right,” she whispered.
“There is more, my love. You still have not seen the full extent of my…deformity. I should show you everything.”
“Please do. I want to know you as you really are. There is no need for you to hide from me.”
He thought it only fair that she see the whole truth. Only then could she decide for sure whether or not she wanted to be with him. Slowly, he pulled off his wig revealing the rest of what he’d been concealing. She did not appear alarmed or repulsed; the soft expression on her face remained unchanged.
“Well, what do you think? Still not a monster?” he asked. This time there was no sarcasm in his tone. He was simply asking a question.
“You are…perfect,” she answered.
Christine placed her hand over the marred skin, gently caressing, trying to familiarize herself with what had been kept from her. Erik felt his heart race with excitement when she pressed her lips to his in a passionate kiss. Even with his defects, she still loved and desired him. His arms tightened around her, and when the kiss ended they were both breathing heavily. She nestled against his chest and ran a hand down the length of his side.
“Darling, if you continue I will want you again, and you need to go back soon while everyone is still sleeping.” He didn’t like the idea of having to rush.
“Let me at least find us something to eat then,” she offered and made to get up from the bed.
A soft cry escaped her lips, and she winced slightly.
“What is it? Are you all right?” Erik’s voice was tender as he caressed her back. He was quite startled.
“It’s nothing. I’m sure it’s normal to be sore after…” she broke off, blushing.
He should have been aware that this would happen. “Stay here. I’ll draw you a warm bath. It should help.”
He wasted no time in getting up and pulling on his trousers. Her eyes followed him as he made his way around. Soon Christine noticed a sweet scent coming from the bathroom as he finished readying the tub. Without a word, he uncovered her and swept her up in his arms. She was grateful for his thoughtfulness. It would have been a bit painful to walk. Just as he lifted her, he noticed a spot of crimson. The proof that she loved him was right there in the bloodstain on the sheet. Erik kissed her forehead and gently carried her to the tub where he proceeded to help her take a bath.
When she was finished, he had wrapped her in one of his own robes and left her to change. As Christine stood picking out something to wear, she felt like a spoiled child. He was so good to her, beyond what she could have imagined. She had just finished putting on a light blue dress when he returned carrying a plate of bread and a glass of juice that he had just squeezed himself.
“Thank you,” she said, beaming at him.
“No, thank you for what you’ve given me. Here, you need to eat something before we leave.”
Christine wished she didn’t have to go back. It would be so good to just stay with him. One day, she promised herself – they would share a home and never be parted again. She did not care if she had to leave everything that was familiar to her; Erik was her world.
