Chapter 7
Alice slowly opened her eyes and looked around. She was in a small room, dimly lit by one candle on a bedside table. Her body hurt all over in places she didn’t know could hurt. She closed her eyes and drifted back into unconsciousness.
*****************
“I would have given you pleasure beyond your wildest imagination. Instead you have chosen the way of pain.”
She lifted one powerful arm up and brought it down across Alice’s face. The young girl fell to the floor and felt hot tears sting her eyes and a throbbing agony across her cheek. Aradia reared up on four of her eight legs and screamed with rage. Alice rolled out of the way as the four legs came slamming down their sharp points ramming into the soft ground where she had been seconds before.
Alice scrambled to her feet and ran through the trees as Aradia charged toward her, the claws on her hands were raised and ready to strike a killing blow. With her eight legs she caught up with Alice and slashed, aiming for the back of her neck.
At the last second Alice dived toward the ground and rolled forward out of range of the deadly claws. She rolled herself onto her feet and ran in the direction she hoped Aradia had left her bag and the three daggers that lay within.
*******************
Something warm and wet was being pressed against her forehead. Alice flickered open her eyes and looked over to the carer. A woman with fair skin, brown hair and large green eyes. She had a slight smile on her face and a bowl of steaming water in her hands. She dipped a cloth into the water and dabbed it over Alice’s cheek. Alice sucked air through her teeth as a small bolt shot up through her face. she tried to sit up but the woman forced her back down onto the bed with obviously a minimum amount of effort.
“Rest. Just rest.”
Alice’s strength failed her again and she drifted back into the dream world.
****************
Leaping over a fallen log Alice spotted her bag lying abandoned on the ground next to the still smouldering ashes of the fire she had made the night before.
With a scream of rage Aradia barged forward like a tank splintering the log in two. Her tough exoskeleton ensuring she felt nothing. She jumped upon Alice and rammed into her using no only the speed of eight powerful legs but her full bodyweight. Alice went flying through the air and screamed as she slammed into a tree.
In pain and her vision swimming Alice could barely see her bag as she dived for it again in faint hope that she would be able to blindly grab a dagger. She didn’t even know Aradia’s leg was coming toward her until it connected with her stomach. She felt her ribs crack along her left side as she was sent rolling through the dirt away from of her life-saving weapons. She rolled into a tree and came to a stop face down in the mud.
****************
Her eyes opened once again. Another candle was lighting the room and the same woman was back, cleaning and dressing her wounds. Alice was as still as a doll as the woman in a white outfit slowly wrapped a fresh bandage around a horrendously bruised arm. Alice tried to talk but her throat was too dry and all that escaped was a hoarse whisper.
The woman glanced down at her and smiled in a friendly way. She took a small cup made of white stone and brought it to Alice’s lips. She sucked greedily at the cold water until she began to cough and the cup was pulled away. Her whole chest hurt with each convulsion of her lungs.
“Slowly. Slowly.” The woman said in her sweet voice as she continued to wrap the bandages around Alice’s arm.
Slowly the painful coughing subsided and Alice drifted back into darkness.
****************
Aradia stepped over and brought her claws down across Alice’s back. the young girl screamed as the razor sharp claws ripped through her flesh like paper, leaving thick ht red lines of blood that ran over her flesh and down her side onto the ground.
Aradia stepped backwards and spat on Alice.
“You brought this on yourself.” She said angrily. Her first words since she began her attack. She grabbed a low branch from a nearby tree and with a grunt of effort snapped it away. She held tightly and aimed the sharp end at Alice. “I would have given you love. Remember that. You chose this path.”
She raised the branch up and aimed for Alice’s heart.
*****************
Though not back to full strength, Alice was certainly doing better than she had been when she first woke up in this strange place. Was that hours ago? More likely days, she had noticed there were fewer bandages recently.
She hadn’t yet seen anything of her mysterious carer and she had neither the courage nor the strength to go looking around the building.
“Seems I have no choice but to sit here and wait for the nurse to come to me.” She muttered to herself, her voice was dry and it hurt her throat to speak, but Alice wasn’t in the habit of keeping thoughts in her head, for her it was somehow easier to work things out if the thoughts and problems were said aloud.
Under her blanket Alice could feel the tight wrappings of many bandages and even a slight chill that indicated nakedness. Whoever her carer was, they hadn’t provided any clothing for her.
She sat and watched the candlelight make the shadows dance across the wall and listened intently for any signs of life in the house. There were none.
“Surely they wouldn’t have left me here while I am still injured?” She said to herself while rubbing her sore throat. She sighed and, not knowing what else to do, she went back to sleep.
***************
As Aradia raised the sharp branch Alice threw a handful of mud upwards. It hit its target and slapped right into the arachnid woman’s eyes. Aradia screamed and reared up on four of her legs. Alice half crawled, half jumped over to her bag and blinded by pain and tears she couldn’t even see what she as grabbing as she dived her hand inside.
Aradia cleared the mud from her eyes and spun around to face the crouching Alice. She tossed the branch aside, now she would tear the girl-child apart with her bare hands. She raised her claws and with a primal scream dived at her.
In that second Alice whipped around with the lightning quick reactions only adrenaline could produce and slashed the dagger with all the force she could muster. She felt the blade hesitate as it met resistance but the force of her swing was too great to be stopped and it slid straight on until it dug into the bark of a tree.
Aradia’s screams made Alice clear the tears from her eyes and it brought a sharp clarity to her mind, bringing the focus she needed. Aradia’s hand was missing and lying on the floor. She was holding a bloody stump in her still remaining arm. Thick green blood oozing onto to the floor. Aradia’s thick exoskeleton only went up as far as her waist and then blended and softened into human flesh. Her arms were no exception.
Aradia staggered backwards and with one final raging scream she ran away into the thick undergrowth. Alice tried feebly to pull the dagger from the tree it had sank to deep into the wood and her injuries were catching up to her. She collapsed and darkness claimed her.
***************
The echo of many feet walking down the hall awake Alice from her light sleep. She sat up in her bed, despite the slight pain it caused her she wanted to be fully able to see and talk with the good Samaritan that had taken her in.
The door opened and Alice had she shield her eyes as bright sunlight poured in from the world outside. The door closed and the candlelight was all that remained.
“You are awake.” Said a familiar sweet voice. Alice dropped her hand from her eyes and stared in surprise, she had seen too much in wonderland to stare in disbelief anymore.
The woman was indeed the person Alice had seen in during her half-conscious stirrings. She had only ever been able to concentrate on the voice and face before now. But now she saw all of her mystery nursemaid. The woman was human from the waist up wearing a tight white top over large D-cup breasts. She had short black fingernails and fangs in her mouth. Below the waist she was an entirely different creature with four legs and black claws and a fine coat of golden fur. Alice had seen a picture of a lion in a book once. But the thing that made this woman even stranger was the fact she had wings, on her lioness back, right where the front shoulder blades would be were a giant set of wings. Thick brown feathers like an eagles. They were folded tightly now resting on her back and allowing her to move through the confines of the building, but would give her a good two-metre wing span when spread, giving her perhaps the gift of flight. Alice had read of only one creature in the human world that vaguely matched this description.
“Cherubim.” She whispered.
The woman looked at her and smiled as she walked to the bedside. She held a bowl of warm water in one hand and a roll of bandages in the other.
“My name is Mina actually. I am a Sphinx. You are in my home.” As she spoke she set the bowl and bandages onto the beside table and pulled the covers away from Alice. She set herself to the task of unravelling the bandages from around her torso.
“I was hunting in the woods two weeks ago when I picked up the smell of blood. I found you, injured, but alive. I brought you here to my home and gave you the best medicine I know.”
“Two weeks?!!!” Alice gasped in disbelief. Mina nodded and rubbed the warm water over Alice’s left side with a damp cloth.
“Yes my dear. I have nursed you back to health.” She gently brushed her hand over Alice’s cheek. “You were so helpless, and so beautiful, under your wounds. I had to help you, I had to care for you and make you my own. My precious one.”
Alice leaned away from Mina, she had already had one encounter with half human creature that had turned out less than happily, she wasn’t willing to have another. Mina however simply smiled sweetly and placed her interest back to cleaning Alice’s left side. All along the rubs were horrid purple and yellow bruises that made Alice wince at the sight of them.
“You have been the victim of the spider woman my dear. I saw her hand on the ground, it was her blood I smelled. Nasty stuff, poisonous. You must be blessed by the gods if you escaped alive.” She finished cleaning and began to wrap the fresh bandages around Alice’s waist.
“Where am I?” Alice asked.
“My home my sweet.” Mina replied without even taking her eyes away from her task. “In the southeast part of the great woods.”
Alice fell silent, in being saved she had been taken even further away from her destination of the home of the Maid of hearts. God only knew how long it would take for her to walk all the way there now. Time was of the essence and yet fate seemed determined to delay her as much as possible.
“You just need to rest now my little love. You need to let me care for you.”
Alice understood at that moment exactly what Mina wanted from her. She wanted to nurse her, care for her until she was healthy again, like some kind of Florence Nightingale, but after Alice was fit and healthy again, what would she be asking for then?
Mina smiled as she finished wrapping the bandages and took a step back.
“There, everything is healing nicely. You should be alright in another few days my dearest.” She took Alice’s hand and kissed the back. “Just rest my sweet, just rest.”
Mina turned her large lioness body around and walked out of the door. Alice stared long after she had left. Fearfully wondering hat she had got herself into now.
