Chapter 7
Darius made his way home and went into his armory. As he walked into the room he looked to the tapestry that hung on one wall. There were eight knights on horse back in full armor and he was amongst them, Arthur, Lancelot, Galahad, Gwain, Tristran, Bores, and Dag, his brothers in arms. History had painted such a ridiculous portrayal of Arthur and his knights that Darius refused to read or listen to any of it. To think that Guinevere and Lancelot could ever betray Arthur was unthinkable.
He needed answers and the only one he could think of that could answer any of them was Acheron.
Pulling out his cell phone he dialed Ash. “Ash I need some answers. Where’s Merlin?”
“Probably in the Caribbean, he has this thing for the tropics.”
Darius whirled around to find Ash there in the armory with him.
“I’ve always liked your collection of weapons, especially this one,” Ash said as he walked up to look at the sword he had locked up in a bullet proof case surrounded be motion detectors.
Darius never understood why he was given Excalibur to guard. “Why does Mia have Merlin’s necklace?” he demanded.
Usually Darius wasn’t short with Ash. He respected him too much and had a feeling Ash gave a lot up for all the Dark Hunters. A lot more than he would ever let any of them know. Darius watched as Ash took off his sunglasses.
Ash knew that Darius has some difficult choices to make. They wouldn’t be if only he forgave himself for things that weren’t his fault to begin with. Darius had always been one of his favorites. He cared for all his Dark Hunters but lets face it, most of them were assholes. Their anger at their betrayals made them bitter and mean but a few haven’t let it poison them.
“Merlin saw your destiny. He had devoted his life to protecting Arthur. He knew something dark lurked around Arthur but couldn’t see in which direction it came from. At your death he saw it all so clearly.”
“Acheron, what did he see?” Darius asked while looking into Ash’s eyes. The silver swirling was almost hypnotic.
“Your destiny,” Ash simply said.
Frowning, “Ash don’t play oracle with me, I’m not in the mood,” Darius said as he walked a few feet away. He didn’t like to be played with and that is what he felt Merlin was doing with him.
“How do you feel about Mia?” Ash asked.
“What do you mean?” Darius asked while turning to look at him.
“Should I petition Artemis for you soul or do you still think yourself unworthy of love?” Acheron asked.
Darius looked away at that question. He had always said that it was his duty as a knight to walk the lonely road of a Dark Hunter and to fight evil but Acheron always saw the truth in everyone. Darius didn’t think he deserved someone’s love. Was in fact scared of it because love could blind you, make you unable to see the real person. But Mia, she was like an open book to him. He knew he could trust her completely but she deserved better than him. Even should he choose to regain his soul he couldn’t simply play ignorant and not fight for good. He was a knight and would always be one.
“Darius she is your soul mate. That is why she had Merlin’s necklace.”
Darius looked at Ash, shocked. Then Darius realized Ash was right. That was the connection he felt for her.
“Merlin looked into you future and saw your destiny. But the fates are fickle. Free will may change anyone’s destiny. Should one decide to go right instead of left they may change fate. You must decide. But don’t take too long. There is a darkness hanging around Mia. That is why Merlin sent his necklace to her family.”
“What darkness,” Darius demanded, taking a step towards Ash.
Acheron put on his sunglasses and then disappeared.
“Acheron!” Darius yelled. Darius was furious. He hated Ash right then. He knew Ash knew more but wouldn’t tell him. Then fear came over him at the thought of Mia in danger.
Darius paced back and forth for a few minutes thinking. He knew Mia was safe tonight and knowing the only way to get rid of some of his anger and frustration was to kill some daimons. He wandered around his armory and gathered various weapons, he was going hunting.

Mia spent the rest of Saturday night and Sunday sleeping and weeping. By Monday she was walking around in a haze, numb from her pain. When Tuesday rolled around she didn’t want to spend another night alone so she called Lisa to see if she wanted to go out.
“Hey Lisa, I thought if you weren’t doing anything tonight, that you might like to go to that club we all went to a couple of weeks ago.”
“Sure Mia. Is everything alright?” Lisa asked.
“No, not really. I just don’t want to be alone right now,” Mia said while trying to keep the tears out of her voice. They made arrangements for Lisa to pick her up at 7 pm and Mia hung up.

Murdoc paced, impatience taking hold of him. Those he sent out to find how Byron died should have been back by now. How could his brother be dead? He was going to take great delight in killing the Dark Hunter who killed him. He stopped and turned to watch Kane enter and stop before him. “Well,” he demanded.
Clearing his throat, Kane said, “It was at Club Nior. It was a human female who killed Byron and those with him.”
“What! A human woman killed four daimons, one being a spathi,” he growled as he took a step towards him.
“Yes. What I found out was she fought them, saving three women,” Kane said, preparing for Murdoc’s temper.
Murdoc turned around else he attack Kane out of anger. “Gather six spathi, we are going hunting. We will start at the club.”

Mia and Lisa had been at the club for about a half an hour when Lisa finally demanded Mia to tell her what was wrong. Mia leaned on the bar and looked down at her hands and said, “I met someone but it is an impossible relationship. There can be nothing between us and it is tearing my apart.”
Mia hadn’t really wanted to talk about Darius. She knew that the real reason she came out tonight was a hope that just maybe Darius would be here even though it would probably kill her to see him again. She already felt like she was dying inside. She just couldn’t understand why she felt so hallow inside.
“It is that guy that took you home the last time we were here, isn’t it?” Lisa asked.
Mia just said yes when she felt them. Slowly she turned around and searched the crowd and froze as she spotted eight daimons. She watched them as they scanned the crowd like they were searching for someone and she had an uneasy feeling that they were looking for her. As to confirm it one laid eyes on her, and then said something to the others who then looked her way.
Knowing that she wouldn’t make it out of the club and knowing she couldn’t take on all of them by herself she did the only thing could think of. Grabbing Lisa’s hand, “Lisa you must do something for me. You must find a bouncer here named Trent. You must tell him that he must contact Darius and he is to tell him to get here ASAP to help me take care of some blondes.” When Lisa started to ask why, Mia squeezed her hand and said, “I don’t have time to tell you more. If you don’t do this for me then I may not survive this. You can’t tell anyone else, just Trent. Go, hurry. I will call you when I can.”
Lisa was frightened. She looked at Mia once more then ran to the two security men that stood next to the dj booth.
Murdoc looked to where Kane was pointing. “I can’t sense her,” he said confused. “I thought you said she was human.”
“That is what I got from the woman before she died,” Kane replied as they started making their way towards her.
Mia watched as they came towards her. Somehow she would have to stall them. She didn’t think they would have any compunction about killing all of the people in here but she just wasn’t sure. Taking a deep breath, she quickly felt for the necklace that lay under her shirt to centered herself, and waited for them.
“Well, what do we have here? Is there a daimon convention in town that I don’t know about?” Mia asked.
“What are you?” Murdoc demanded.
“Where are your manners? Aren’t you gonna introduce yourself?” she asked, frowning at him.
Taking a step towards her, he growled, “You killed my brother, you bitch.”
Mia sighed in annoyance as she said, “You would think after all this time you guys could come up with a better name to call me. How am I supposed to remember your brother from all of the daimons I’ve killed? You all look the same, tall, blonde, and ugly.”
Murdoc grabbed her by the arm and glared at her.
“You wouldn’t want to make a scene and expose yourself,” Mia said trying not to wince from the pain his grip was causing.
Murdoc laughed, “Do you really think we care. We could kill all these pitiful humans without blinking an eye.”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Mia said while trying to pull her arm out of his grip.
“Kane, Janse, go hunting,” he ordered, giving her an evil grin.
“No, wait! I will go with you quietly, just don’t hurt anyone,” Mia said, letting her control on her emotions to slip.
Taking a deep breath she calmed herself while they started dragging her towards the exit. She just hoped that Darius would make it in time but she was determined that if she should die that she would take as many as she could with her. Trying to make it hard for them, she stumbled and made them drag her towards the side parking lot. Deftly unsheathing her dagger she taunted, “Oh now I remember your brother. This is where I dusted his sorry ass. He whined like a coward when I stuck him with my blade.”
Mia struck out with her blade, slicing Murdoc’s arm so she could get free from him. She rushed at the closest daimon and stabbed him in the chest. Murdoc hissed and back handed her which sent her to the ground. Mia rolled to her feet and crouched down, prepared for another attack.
One of the daimons farthest from her exploded then there was Darius. “Really Mia, you could have waited for me. You know I love to watch you kill daimons,” Darius said just before two more daimons attacked him.
Murdoc wasn’t about to miss his chance in killing Mia. He told Kane to circle around her and he charged her.
Mia managed to stab Kane in the shoulder which caused him to stumble backwards. She went in for the kill only to be distracted by the warmth against her chest. A sudden haze seemed to come over her. She felt herself being grabbed and then a searing pain in her neck.
Darius just killed one of the daimons when he watched in horror as one of the daimons grabbed Mia and sank his teeth into her.
Murdoc drank Mia’s blood until him and Kane were thrown from her by some unseen force.
Distracted by what was happening to Mia, Darius didn’t see the daimon coming at his back. Hearing her scream his name he whirled around to find a daimon frozen in place with his blade only inches from Darius’ chest. He watched as the daimon was thrown from him.
Murdoc, not knowing what was going on, told the other daimons to retreat. Before he went thru the bolt hole he growled that he would be back and next time he would kill them both.
Darius ran to Mia, reaching her just in time to catch her as she fell. Her eyes were glazed over and she was very pale. There were bruises on her face and a cut on her lip and a bite wound on her neck. Her eyes focused on him and she whispered he name just before passing out.
