Chapter 6: Facing the past
When they returned to the house Esme went to her room to think for awhile. She needed some time to process all of the information Carlisle had given her and to deal with her conflicting emotions. Although she was not thrilled with the nature of her new life she thought she might be able to adjust if she could just sty with Carlisle. He was very kind and soft spoken the exact opposite of the man that she had been married to. He had been so bad that she had run to protect both herself and her unborn child. Although in the end she had failed to do either. She had not been able to protect her precious son. As her thoughts turned to her son she felt the familiar grief take her over. How could she possibly think she could be happy in this new life without her baby. Here she was to live indefinitely and he had lived only a matter of days.
Esme collapsed onto the floor in grief. As she felt the sobs coming from her body she realized that try they might no tears would come. She could not even use that as a comfort to release the pain. So she curled up in a ball in the middle of the floor and sobbed dryly.
Carlisle could hear Esmes tearless sobs from his study. The sound of them were ripping a whole in his still heart. He walked down the hall to Esmes room and opened the door quietly. When he seen her sobbing on the floor he couldn’t take it. He crossed the room quickly and picked her up off the floor cradling him gently in his arms. He carried her over to the small couch that sat in the corner of her room. Carlisle just continued to hold her and rub her back gently saying nothing but offering his comfort nonetheless.
As soon as Esme felt Carlisles arms around her she cuddled into his chest. She took comfort in the feel of his arms around her and his warm scent that floated around her. Esme had no idea how long they had sat there for him comforting her through her grief but neither of them made any motion to move. Eventually Esme stopped sobbing but stayed in Carlisles arms accepting the comfort he was willing to give.
Carlisle desperately wanted to ask Esme what had her so upset but he had promised her that he would not push her to tell him. He had to be patient and wait for her to come to him.
“Thank you,” Esme said quietly. Carlisle hugged her to him tightly.
“Your welcome Esme. I will help you through this, I am here for you anytime you need me,” Carlisle said.
“Do you want to know what happened?” she asked. Secretly she almost hoped he would say no so that she would not have to tell him all of the details but she knew that if she wanted to heal she should let it out.
“Esme I want to be able to help you through this. I would like you to tell me what happened but I will not push you”
“I think I would like to tell you if you don’t mind listening,” She said.
“Please tell me Esme,” Carlisle pleaded gently. Esme took a deep breath and started telling Carlisle everything that had happened in the last ten years.
“After I met you at the hospital the fist time my life went on as most sixteen year olds do. When I got a little older I started considering moving out west to find myself a teaching job. I always loved children and thought that I would really enjoy teaching. My parents mostly my father actually were against the idea they thought that it would be improper for a young woman to live on her own. Most of my friends had already married and my parents were pressuring me to do the same. That’s when Charles Everson started to come around my house. He was thought to be a good man and when he proposed my father convinced me I should accept,” Esme chanced a look at Carlisles face she wanted to know his reaction to hearing say she had been married, “I accepted his proposal and we were married in 1917. I didn’t take me long to realize that he was not the man I thought he was. He became abusive to me soon after we had married,” Esme heard Carlisle breath in sharply at this new information. He looked furious but he said nothing just continued to hold her and stroke her back tenderly. “when he went away to fight in the war I was so relived. I felt free. I should have left and went somewhere while he was gone so that he couldn’t find me but I didn’t I stayed. When he returned from the war the abuse continued. It wasn’t long before I found out that I was pregnant. I was terrified that he would do something to me and harm the baby. Also I was afraid of what could happen once the baby was born. I was so scared but I ran away. I went to a cousin in Milwaukee and she graciously took me in. But my parents found out where I was and tried to convince me to return to my husband. So I ran again so that I wouldn’t have to go back. I found a teaching job until the baby was born. I named him Alexander he was so beautiful my little boy,” at this Esmes voice hitched but she did not break down. She would get this whole story out. “He died not long after he was born from a lung infection. It hurt so much to lose him. I couldn’t protect him even though I tried. I couldn’t live with the pain anymore so I went out to the cliff and jumped to end the pain.” Esme kept her eyes down as she finished her story. She was afraid to look up at Carlisle to see his expression. She was so afraid that he wouldn’t want her now, afterall she was still technically married to her husband.
Carlisle sat through Esmes explanation without interrupting. He was appalled and furious at the thought that any man had raised a hand to the beautiful girl the sat with him. Then she told him of the loss of her son and he thought that his heart just might break with hers.
“I’m so sorry Esme,” he said quietly pulling her even closer into his arms. He just wanted to offer he all the comfort that he could give.
“Do you want me to leave now?” Esme said. She could feel her heart clenching at the thought of having to leave.
“Esme I would never ask you to leave. I want nothing more than for you to stay here. Nothing you have said to me changes how I feel Esme. You have had a hard life, harder than most have to deal with. I want you to have a good life here with me and Edward. You are welcome here as long as you want to stay.” Carlisle said passionately. He couldn’t believe she thought he would want her to leave.
Esme let out s soft sigh and hugged herself to Carlisle.
“I want to stay here with you. There is no where else I want to be,” Esme said.
